John Terry, the man often described by burbling Sky pundit Jamie Redknapp as a "modern-day gladiator" seems to have got himself involved in some kind of Mexican stand-off between himself, Manchester City and Chelsea. And "JT", the man described as "Mr Chelsea", seems unwilling to go for his gun.

After a decade as a Blues first-teamer, a public lack of commitment to a cause for which he has regularly kissed the badge is somewhat telling. When latest manager Carlo Ancelotti was unveiled on Monday, he spoke of how Terry was "unsellable" while chief exec Peter Kenyon talked of private assurances from the club captain that he would be staying at Stamford Bridge. Yet still no statement from Terry, golfing in Tenerife until he returns on Thursday but seemingly unable and unwilling to go on the record.

But what's this? A "source close to" Terry told Thursday's Sun newspaper that the Londoner now feels "betrayed and unwanted" by Chelsea. How so? "It's unbelievable - even though he's the club captain and one of the Blues' most important players, senior management at the club haven't once tried to talk to him.

"John wants to know what's going on and, more importantly, whether Chelsea actually want to keep him or cash in while they have a chance."

So, Terry, with some justification, is demanding respect for his achievements with the club. It seems there is an underlying theme. With Manchester City reportedly prepared to put in another bid for him, and, it is rumoured, pay him £300,000 a week then Terry wants to see what Chelsea are prepared to do to keep him. Will they offer him similar cash and a deal to keep him at Stamford Bridge for the rest of his career?

That seems unlikely and unforthcoming and this is where Terry, by use of those "sources close" is trying to ensure that the crown of Chelsea kingpin is not allowed to slip, even if he does end up earning over a million a month and residing in a well-appointed Cheshire residence with home gym and cinema room.

Another ingredient is the presence at Manchester City of Wayne Bridge, avowed pal of "JT". Bridge made a January move north to command the type of wages that even Chelsea would not pay him, and it was Terry and Frank "Lampsy" Lampard who helped him celebrate his new gig with a night on the tiles. It included a posh meal, nightclubbing until 4am and then "JT" and "Bridgey" heading to a casino after a night that had already cost thousands. Still, they can afford it.

City are reported to be gaining confidence of securing their target because of encouragement from Bridge, who, no doubt, wants a pal to hit the bars of Manchester with. Why they are prepared to pay what looks like ending up an astronomical amount is a burning question. Lucio, from Bayern Munich, looks a far more serviceable and cheaper option; perhaps less injury prone too. Yet Mark Hughes, who coincidentally stayed in the same Dubai holiday resort as Terry last week, seems to have his heart set on acquiring him as an on-pitch leader. For City's owners from Abu Dhabi, to lure the England captain would be quite a coup and perhaps, in their eyes, lend an air of indigenous respectability to their "project".

What of Chelsea? A club steeped in spin and the PR machine, the words of Ancelotti and Kenyon seem designed to challenge Terry to make the first move so that they are not seen as forcing the club's most successful captain out of the door when to do so would actually give them a significant injection into a transfer kitty that is not the bottomless pit of yore.

The deal, should it happen, would seem to benefit all parties, though it may come at a price to Terry. And that price is pride. The moment that "Mr Chelsea" label was most famously attached to him was by ITV commentator Clive Tyldesley just as Terry took a fateful step towards what could have been a Champions League-winning penalty in Moscow. Terry has yet to bury the ghost of May 21 2008 and to move to Eastlands would negate the chance of that ever being able to happen.

The fans to who he delivered a tear-drenched apology will not get to see him right that wrong if he moves to City. A public image of being a "fan on the pitch" is one he obviously relishes and will not surrender easily, though a mega wage could soften the blow.

His next pronouncement is keenly awaited because an exit from Stamford Bridge no longer looks the impossibility it once did.

I do not believe in forcing a matured man with a high degree of responsiblity to ulter his mental state.John terry has been so pampered as well as cared for in Chelsea Fc,so he should do what he desired fit and right to Chelsea.
afterall,Kaka demonstrated a very high level of morality when the same jumbo offer was made to him a couple of months ago.The earlier the better for Chelsea fc.
God bless everyone.

Interesting article. You delicately balance Terry's all-too-human desire for filthy lucre against his better, more upright "Mr. Chelsea" attitudes. My take? He will follow the money. Light blue, dark blue, its all blue, innit?!

Posted by ANA on 07/08/2009

What is your point, ManU fan?
I have not seen one positive article by John "Editor" Brewin about Chelsea. You always cry about something. Obviuosly, your articles are for "red" fans.

Where there's smoke there's fire-
We could be losing our 2 midfielders as well- Masch & Alonso

Posted by Amobi Tobe on 07/08/2009

Yeah, I'll join an earlier commentator in saying: light blue' dark blue, ain't 'em all blue? That's why I'll keep loving Arsenal: it's not all about the dough, mates!!!

No one man is bigger than the club. As a die hard MU fan, it was a great relieve to see Ronaldo go. Life goes on, he's done his part for MU and his contributions will be recorded as part of the club's history. Same goes for JT. He's been too pampered in Chelski and you could see he's getting bigger than Roman himself. Ballack, Drogba, Mikel (surprised) is following JT's bad examples so the sooner JT goes out, the better it is for Chelski. How many managers have come and gone, and he (JT) gets away from it all, always claiming his innocence? U want a Mr One Club, refer Giggs.Ryan; Scholes.Paul; Neville.Gary; Gerrard.Steven; Carragher.Jamie; Le Tissier.Matt; etc, etc.

I think the whole issue has to do with loyalty amd morality. I do not believe that Terry would have been in Chelsea this long if not for the money that started flowing 4 years ago. Isn't his current pay astronomical already. He wants more. Maybe he thinks he can pull off a ala Lampard last year. He feels betrayed and unwanted because unlike what happened to Lampard, Chelsea have not upped his pay to match ManC's offer. What kind of money a footballer need? So that they can throw it in pubs, drinking up to 4am and in casinos? What kind of role models are these fellas? Like Pele has alluded to the kissing of club insignias had lost its meaning. Kaka is not different. He rejected the mind blowing money in Jan to join Real in June. It was not loyalty to AC Milan. Don't be fooled. Footballers are like corporate CEOs with advisors everyday speaking of "smart" moves. Terry is no different, and I can conclude, at least from what he is doing now. Morality and loyalty are prized goods

Posted by Ryan on 07/09/2009

ANA, I'm not sure what article you're reading, but this certainly isn't a "red" article. I think Mr. Brewin has done a great job of portraying the moral decisions Terry has to face with this.

The comment about never getting Champions League success with City might not be totally correct, though, because, as painful as it is to say this as a red, I think City can push for the Top Four next season. Liverpool haven't done much in the transfer market, and it looks as though they're going to lose a couple of key players (Alonso, Mascherano, etc). I think a leader who understands the English game would be good for City, and I think City will provide too good an offer to Chelsea for them to refuse.

Posted by RaoulC on 07/09/2009

l honestly thin Terry should go. Chelsea are a club in decline. Anchelotti is going to do what Scolari did. They should have fought tooth and nail to keep Hiddink. With Hughes staying at Man City, this could actually work for them. Terry would go along way to making them a force.

I don,t feel happy reading this atticle neither will Jt mr chelsea. I know that he is man enough and will not follow money, afterall what is money when he cannot get the happiness and accopmlishment he is enjoying in Chelsea.Manchester city should go and look for more of the robinhos, who is running after money not Jt who have a strong morals and attachement to our dear club Chealsea. Thanks Ibeh Fan

Being a big Chelsea fan the best opinion i can give for this dispute is for every one to leave the whole decision for the man in point i.e JT.Its his personal decision to make.

Posted by nicollete henry on 07/09/2009

The press didnt bank on the ronaldo deal going smoothly, they cleary want to keep their back pages spicy by distracting terry, chelsea and man city. The press are coming up with stats saying chelsea win more games without terry, only chelsea fc and fans appreciate the value of terry, he will not leave,he doesnt even want to comment on the wishful thinking of sparkey.

Posted by Judah on 07/09/2009

Terry is THE legacy of chelsea. Leaving would spell disaster. He is not the most fantastic centre back but his leadership skills are worldclass. He should follow his heart..or should i say...money!

Posted by Collins D Chelsea Oracle on 07/09/2009

Terry has always been seen as Mr.One-Club at Chelsea where he is highly reverred and well treated .His captainship of England is derived from his role at Chelsea. He now earns 140k weekly at Celsea. I know that JT will show integrity unless he is not whom he professes to be.There have been players of repute who shunned money for honour. Terry should be a wise man even when the price at City is sufficiently alluring.Blue is not Sky Blue and cannot be.

Posted by Jones Nuhu on 07/09/2009

A few players in world football epitomise loyalty; Maldini & Stevie G top dat list. Terry has a chance 2 join them in this era where money comes before love for the game. It should be a straight forwad decision if Terry really does have chelsea at heart. Whatever the outcome Terry has captained chelsea to trophies, i hope he wins the trophy for loyalty by remainin a London blue forever..

Hi John -

Great blog. I'm new to football(i.e. soccer here in the US) and I'm searching for a Premier League team to follow. I have no idea where to start. Can someone help me?

Posted by sam on 07/09/2009

Terry should go. I hate a"cry-baby" leader, let him go.

Posted by Anonymous on 07/09/2009

I actually respect him for not going to the press. It is his decision, and it's a refreshing site to the one we have with Tevez at the moment. He's conducted himself in a professional manner, and just because he hasn't poked his head out in front of the cameras doesn't mean he doesn't know what's going on.

For god's sake, get a life JT! there are alot more people out there who are getting paid peanuts compared to what u r getting as well as what u r asking for! so keep your promise for the unkindled luv for chelski as u have so affectionately displayed in the past....

The man can leave but only if Cavarlho is retained. Its time Chelsea started rebuilding based on younger, ambitious, and low ego players.
Actually Chelsea is now the Inter Milan of 1990s where a single player would command a manager's exit. The fact that Terry cost Mourinho the Chelsea gaffer job means Ancelloti is not safe too coz Mour is more respected & feared by players. Next to go should be Ballack, Drogba.

I believe that there is always a time to come and a time to go, a move by John Terry is never out of place, this will further put Chelsea in the right frame to careflly select a new leader, becos this is what we really need at this stage after so many years. Though JT's impact on the club can not be over emphasized, but one thing is constant "change".

I feel we shld respect Jt's intentions a bit more if he wants 2 leave probably based on what happnd may 2009 of which d club executives n fans still find it kinda difficult 2 bury d ghost since d finals against man utd moreso,D offer from mancity surely appear 2 b fantastic d way c.ronaldo n kaka i.e were being lurred 2 real madrid.Wishn all u football lovers d best.Onyedi Bosa

My Terry, I do not want you to go. For the sake of pride and what we stand for, please stay with us, you are one of the real blue. Remember it is in the blood. Money is not everything, satisfaction is another thing you should consider and I believe you are present enjoying more of this in Chelsea. Our club is a great club if not jealousy like the one from FIFA president and the UEFA too, I do not think there is any club in the world that can stand in our way. If the club do not talk to you, then you need to approach and open up as a man; and tell them your mind. Don't follow those distracters; it will not work for them. That was what they did to Jose Mourino (The Special One) only to turn back to call him for National duty, I was so happy that the guy mess them up.
Remain bless because you bless already by remaining Blues.

I fink Chelsea is much more a great team than man city. Though they are rich now.
But i dnt fink the Blues will need their money and they cannot pay john terry nothing chelsea can't pay him.
We the Blue Fans we love john terry so much and i wish i could talk to him and cry in front of him to be coinvince to stay with Chelsea for life.
I love Chelsea F.C for life...

Tel u wat, gone are the days we use to have players keeping to their words n something like club-patriotism players like Rush,Wright and Irwin or even Giggs have done, its different ballgame one where money rules i wont b suprised if i read tommorow that Rio or JT himself is wearin the famous 'bwin' jersey! Good money? Why not!

furtheremore,he had help the club very much.

Its absolutely staggering and mind blowing to read these figures mentioned in the press that players earn.I personally do not think Terry will leave Chelsea but I honestly pray that he does.As an Arsenal fan,I know it will be a huge blow to the confidence of the other players to see Terry leave, coupled with the fact that big players are rejecting the overtures of Chelsea to join them these days.On the other hand, it may actually be the right time for him to go because his performance seriously dropped in the last season.
Trying times indeed for Chelski and there deluded fans.Gunners forever.

Posted by mike on 07/11/2009

Every true Chelsea fan knows JT isn't going anywhere, worst case scenario is that he is angling for a bigger contract and thats about it. Thats why it's called the silly season, no games to discuss and in order to fill the pages they resort to blowing bubbles.

Posted by singlionfish on 07/11/2009

$200,000 a week !! come on Terry, do what sly Ronaldo did. Hey ! the obsence money was not offered to you because you are a super player who can single-handedly win a game against 11 men. Do what Ronaldo did, shamelessly enjoying the hard work & efforts put in by the other 10 men; which made him look bloody good. Hey JT, without the other 3 players in defence (not to mention the goalie and midfielders, do you think you can look reliable and solid as a defender ?? Come on, take the money and give your Blues buddies a treat !!....bloody hypocrites

Posted by benito on 07/11/2009

JT has an image to protect,if he leaves,we would push on but he would be rmbrd as a captain that sold his ship for a few more pounds. His name would not be mentioned in future when we discuss Chelsea.

Posted by jezi on 07/11/2009

if terry likes money ,then he can go ,but i don't think he is that can of a man he should keep his honor becos money is not most things in life but with some pride and little money you can be the best man on earth,so JT think about it

Posted by yezy on 07/12/2009

Mr Terry will always stay at Chelsea! The only reason he is not responding now is because he is on holiday and doesnt want to be disturbed. When he comes back then he will say YET AGAIN that he is staying at Chelsea forever.

Posted by aghaunor,sunday on 07/12/2009

JT.is making this whole thing about his transfer more of drama he should take a stand and allow this drama to end afterall soldiers come and go but the barrack will always remain there.with or without him chelsea will forge ahead.

Posted by Damon: Expat.Always Chelsea on 07/12/2009

Don't blame the players for chasing money, John Terry has given great service over the last 10 years or so, yes he is a great leader. J.T is 28 he is at his pinnacle he is only going to get slower over the coming years, if Man City want to throw stupid money and J.T wants to catch it so be it. Here are the outcomes, if he goes Chelsea will have a pot of money to hopefully find a replacement and free up whatever he earns,John gets richer. Man City get a player at the top for about two years. If he stays we have to start looking for a replacement anyway in the next year or two. Sentiment would like me to see him stay, reality says maybe it's time for a change, Chelsea needs to start getting players in their early 20's or younger, at the moment we have holes and cracks appearing that need an overhaul not a bodge job, whatever happens good luck to John Terry I have appreciated his on field commitment. One last thing, Man City are a long way off being good enough to get into the C.L.

Posted by yaya on 07/12/2009

pls leave jt alone ,whatever decision he made willbe to chelseafc, hope he transfer request if he is a man.

Posted by garen on 07/12/2009

I don't see the big deal about JT. Don't you wonder why no Spanish or Italian clubs are after him? Maybe he's not as good as Chelsea wants everyone to believe he is so they can cash in on him. He's no spring chicken either. In a year or two he'll be another Fabio Cannavaro. Finished and washed up. And by the way if you want your club to be hated by football fans around the world, you should buy JT, Drogba and Ballak. The most despised trifecta in modern football.

Posted by Archie on 07/13/2009

Yeah JT,go to City and become a flop like what Ronaldo is going to become at Madrid.

Posted by chika nwankwo on 07/13/2009

no hunan is indispensible, chelsea is not used to this kind of situation, thats why the brohaha. when players starts behaving like thin gods, better show them they way, if not their will be a hi jack. fergie have thrown away a lot of world class players that went for his jugular and united comes out stronger. if jt is using man city unholy admiration for him as a spring board, then he is getting it all wrong. if he joins mancity, i bet you he will loose all he worked for in football in england. i believe he is much wiser. money is not everything to play in football. if he insists in leaving, chelsea should allow him, then we shall see a chaffed terry, who hides under cavalho, ashly cole and peter chez to florish. chelsea is not a one player culb. mancity and real madrid are killing football. but the tempo will soon die down and mancity will come of worse.

Posted by michael on 07/13/2009

i am a dir hard chelseafc fan but i think it is time for terry to leave . if city are serious about buying him they should pay uss 57 million euros + micah richards and i think they can have terry . with this money we can make any transfer we whant to make and make sure carlvaho does not leave for inter. we win more games when he is not playing than when he is playing . no dought about hm being the best captain in the premier league but he is 29 and get injjured every now and then . with richards we will have a very good cover at right back and central defence when we have an injury over there . we will also have ivanovic and rajkovic to take over from carlvaho next seaosn, . with or without terry we will win the champions league next season . we have a great squad of players who i belive can bring us success and cashey cole can also go to madrid since we have zhurikov who can play at left back but hopfully he will sign a new contract but we will not be paying crazy money anymore

Posted by NELSON on 07/13/2009

MR JOHN TERRY'S SILENCE IS JUST TELLING. AN OPPORTUNITY 2 INCAPACITATE OUR OVERWHELMING (IN A NEGATIVE SENSE) DRESSING ROOM POWERS THAT KEEP PULLING US BACKWARDS HAS PRESENTED ITSELF, RED ROM, TAKE IT. SELL HIM.

Posted by DaBee on 07/13/2009

lol. i think that Terry should go for the cash. It would make no sense to gamble in Chelsea. i mean, yeah, Man City has no chance of winning the CL or the EPL ... but there there is 100% he is going to take home 300K per week! as for the titles go, you have MU and Liverpool and maybe even Arsenal and the others fighting you for the title. Plus you have new manager ( just remember the hoohaa scolari made at 1st last year).
in short, Chelsea cannot promise you the title nor willing to give you the money. so just take the money and have a happy retirement fund!

I think footballers r no longer loyal to their clubs.
Most pledged loyalty because the transfer money is to the club & not to the player.
But when they are offered an obscene wage, no footballer ever resist it.
History has shown us all that. The most recent being Ronaldo, who left Man U for Real not just because Man U was given a astronomical transfer money to enrich the club. Man U have enough good players already.
He is there to 'enrich' himself by playing with the 'best' but the truth is, he is enriching himself financially.
Same thing can be said for Kaka, he pledged his loyalty when Man City offered a huge transfer to AC Milan. Real does not enrich Milan that much compared to City but the 'undisclosed' wages for him and Ronaldo will sure go a long way 'enriching' the two financially.
To think that they r so filthy rich, they could splurge on alcohol, women, etc., without batting an eyelid, while many millions around the globe r living in poverty is utterly shameless & sick.

My view to this'Terry going to Man.City'issue is simple,IT AINT HAPPENING.However,if what I've been reading in the press is of any substance(e.g.'Terry demanded a meeting with Abramovich to know in what direction Chelsea are going', or 'Terry wants to listen to what Man.City have to say',or worse 'Terry feels he has not been shown enough respect/appreciation by Chelsea' etc etc)then my suggestion is that we all will be better if he's allowed to go.It's quite obvious his head's been turned by all the figures flying around.Terry has been a wonderful servant for Chelsea but that's just what he's always been...a servant. He is not bigger than the club and his continued stay might end up having a negative effect on the rest of the squad. In all my time of following football,I have never heard of Maldini or Raul's future being up for such public debate.I guess this is just a reflection of the times.Bring in Taylor from Newcastle and sell Terry for £45Mill!Now,..that's a WIN-WIN for everybody!
