Can Liverpool and Chelsea ever be pulled apart in the Champions League? Five years in a row of footballing tedium and we're back for more. Rafa Benitez will face his third different Chelsea boss when his team entertains the Blues at Anfield for their quarter-final tie.
Strangely, for all Jose Mourinho's tactical reputation, only Avram Grant has got the better of him in the competition, after his team were given the whip hand by John Arne Riise's inexplicable own-goal in the first leg.
The last meeting, the second leg of last season's semi-final, was a far better footballing display than any of the previous, with Chelsea powering home in extra-time just when it seemed Benitez might again get the better of them. It is to be hoped that there will be more of the same and not the rank boredom of the two group games the pair played against each other in the 2005-6 season. Those rota-ed in the office to work the shift are hardly licking their lips.
Liverpool are riding high. Which team would not be after their wins over Real Madrid and Manchester United? Will this draw and Steven Gerrard's ongoing court case take them out of their stride? Guus Hiddink, a European Cup winner in 1988 and who took PSV to the semis in 2005, will fancy his chances after planting the green shoots of recovery at Stamford Bridge. If he is to leave the club in the summer, a despatching of Liverpool could leave quite a legacy.
Manchester United and Arsenal can breathe easier. For now. Most would fancy them to beat their next opponents in Porto and Villarreal respectively. The big deal, notwithstanding the challenge of two opponents who are both experienced on the European stage, will be a potential semi-final. That could take place in the last week in April and first in May. The two are set to meet domestically on May 16 anyway, with a potential FA Cup Final to follow a fortnight later. United v Arsenal could yet turn out to be this season's drama mini-series ratings winners.
Of course, Manchester United have form in slipping up against supposedly lesser opponents, with Galatasaray, Monaco, Bayer Levekusen and Porto themselves, in their vintage Mourinho era, all taking advantage of complacency or adopting the gameplan to beat them. Arsenal meanwhile face the team they were within a Juan Roman Riquelme penalty of losing the semi-final to in 2006. And United could tell them about the Spanish club's defensive qualities, having played out four straight 0-0 draws against them.
Two of the continents' very biggest names meet in the other, non-English leg. Bayern Munich have met Barcelona twice previously in European competition. Back in 1998, Bayern beat the Catalan club home and away in the group stage, the season in which they were losing finalists. Two years previously, Bayern beat a Johan Cruyff-coached Barca on their way to winning the UEFA Cup.
So, Barcelona, despite their status as co-favourites, face opponents with a great record against them. Jurgen Klinsmann gets the chance to dine at the top table of European football in his first season as a club coach. But then again, the same goes for Pep Guardiola. Two inexperienced bosses at two of Europe's most seasoned campaigners at this late stage? Whatever the qualities of each club's playing talent, Hiddink and Benitez may fancy their chances in the next round.
The Champions League format has matured to a level where every encounter has sub-plots and past history. The stark fact that no team has defended their European crown since AC Milan under the old format in 1990 reflects the difficulty of a winning campaign. And counts against United. The predictability of the second round and group stage is gone. The business end is upon us.

This draw couldn't favour United anymore than it does. The three weakest opponents of the possible 7 are in United's side of the draw. I think this current Villareal side has the strength to dispose of Arsenal, I just can't see them turing up in what has been a rollercoaster season for them. Man Utd should comfotably beat Porto. As for Chelsea v Liverpool, the debate of form vs class is hollow. Liverpool have proven under Rafa that they are a different force under Benitez, and with Hiddink leaving in the summer, I think Liverpool will just want it more. Bayern vs Barcelona is the toss up of the draw. Expect a close encounter, possibly penalties.
Whilst I can see Liverpool making it to the Semi's, their current CL squad has no depth due to the homegrown rules.
Bayern Vs Man United in the final would be my bet

I wouldn't discount Barcelona so easily, even a bad Barcelona side contains more attacking talent than most other teams. Normally European games are tight affairs and can often be decided by a moment of magic. Barca have more magical players than anyone else.
However I hope Chelsea will win, beating Man U in the final over 90mins.

I am sure Chelsea will beat liverpool. Liverpool beat man u 4-1 is because ferguson underestimated liverpool, not because liverpool is good. Normally ferguson will stick to tight play when play strong team, but he doesnt do that when play liverpool. Liverpool got lucky goal when play real madrid in anfield, only that they can win big. The best match is undoubtedly Bayern Munich against Barcelona, which is far from cut and dried. Barcelona have been the most exciting side to watch in Europe this season with that Fabled attacking force of Messi, Henri and Eto'o. But they leak goals at the other end and Bayern have been racking up some monster scores recently, not least their 12-1 aggregate win over Sporting Lisbon. It's gonna rain goals in this one!

I personally forsee a Man U - Barca final. I am an Arsenal fan myself but to be honest with you I very much doubt if they can make it to the final. They may make it to the semi-final yes, but you should not rule out Villareal as they would be on a revenge mission. Arsenal beat them one nill in 2006 in one of the group stages ( cant remember if it was the last eight or last 16 ) which saw Arsenal progressing to the finals eventually.
Main prob with Arsenal is that their performance of late is not as electifying as it used to be, so that is why I genuinly feel they may not reach the final.
The fact that liverpool beat both Real Madrid and Man U of late does not necessarily guarantee that they will beat all the remaining teams. They have just been in great form of late yes, but Chealsea can still hold them and deprive them of the semis. In addition, even if they win Chealsea, it does not guarantee that they can still beat Man U, Arsenal, BarcA or any of the other temas in last eight.

As a Manchester United fan, I hope we get to the final. And to play Barca would be a great game. But, no game from here on in is easy. And to say that we got an easy draw, just look at the round before. We got one of the hardest teams of that round in Inter. I was fearful, but we pulled through. May the best team win, but I think Liverpool run is over. They just dont have the depth in squad to survive. The dark horse in all of this would be Arsenal. Not much expected, but on the day, they can beat any team, and I am a hater of the gunners, but I will respect their level of play.

Arsenal is very strong with all their first team players who seem to be returning from injury.This means more confidence for the whole team and now with their new found resilience and the thought of having gone thru a tougher time without Captain Fab,Theo Walcott,Emmanuel Adebayor,Eduardo,I would like to bet on them in both CL and Premier Leaggue.

I think everyone is talking about Liverpool & Chelsea cuz all the other draws aren't that interesting in my opinion but if ou look at the Blues vs. the Reds it's a time when Chelsea are high-flying plus the 2nd home leg gives The Pensioners the edge. Liverpool aare always yearning for that 2nd leg at home but you can't always be lucky.
Talking abut other teams, Barcelona can be vulnerable even when playing smaller teams and Bayern are trailing in a league which is not known for it's high quality.
I think Manchester United are the lucky ones here to have been picked into a weaker branch but they will not have the 2nd leg at home advantage even if they get through to the the semis so we'll see

Very even draw, I must say. With ManU out of the way (no one can win the trophy twice in a row) it could be Barcelona vs Arsenal. It would justify the beautiful game. The only thing the Gunners need is some kind of camouflage for Arshavin so he can actually play in the next rounds because of cut-tied status. In "Mission Impossible" they used to make masks for folks to look like someone else. Those masks could be replicated for Arshavin to look like Nasri for example, they are similar in statures after all. With that delicate question out of the way, there shouldn't be any more serious threat than complacency between The Arsenal FC and the winning trophy. This time Rome will be conquered by the mighty Gunners and, therefore, redeemed before the Neros of this world have any chance of burning it to the ground once more.

I'm a Liverpool supporter and Chelsea is the one side I did not fancy having to face. We've played each other so much over recent years, you can throw history out the window, past & recent, this is going to be an epic tie. Should see some tough yet brilliant football. And then to have either Barca or Bayern waiting in the next round, we drew a tough lot. If we stay healthy, play as a whole while Gerrard & Torres continue their superb play and get contributions here and there from others, it's possible to see thru to the final.
Though it seems ManU has an easy route to the final, Arsenal is healthy and playing very well of late. It could be the 2nd year in a row that the CL has 3 of 4 semi-finalists being English sides.
I would like to see ManU/Arsenal and Liverpool/Barca in the semis with Liverpool/ManU in the final. If I had to settle for a 2nd choice, I'd want to see ManU/Barca in the final.

Please, when Liverpool is on all cylinders, it can beat anyone. Need I remind Man U what happened the last two times? ;). Liverpool beat Chelsea, I'll guess something small like 1-0 or 2-0, not something huge like Real and (who was it?) Man U.
Man U I will guess will go all the way. The draw is way too one sided in Man U's favor. If UEFA really wanted to test Man U, they would have given them Barca or Bayern.
Barca and Bayern is tough. There's only one Ribery. But...Podolski finally gets his 1st team status now that Klose's out. I'll give it to Barca, the attack is too strong.

Well....since the draw pitted Mu against non-favourites like Porto, Arsenal and Villareal.....Mu will progress from this half.
As for the other half, i dun think Liv is strong enuf to bulldoze over Chelsea or Barcelona / Bayern....not enuf class....I pick Chelsea and Barcelona to fight out for the final berth.

Well...by that time of the finals...Man Utd would have lost all concentration on chasing that many competition. Vidic & Ferdinand defensive pairing would have been leaking goals like a running tap.
As much as they could score...the defence will let in more as there is no defensive cover in the midfield.
The goalie could only look helpless as the ball
roll into the goal like he did during the 4-1 defeat by Liverpool.
If its a Man Utd Versus Chelsea or Liverpool Final. The result would be simple, it will not be Man Utd lifting the trophy. You just need Drogba or Torres to do the damage. Get It???

This couldn't have gone any worse IMO:
- Man U got the weakest team in the quarter finals which they certainly didn't need.
- Chelsea vs. Liverpool AGAIN *sigh*
- Barca is playing the hardest non-English side in Munich.

Liverpool have already peaked, but Chelsea are just beginning to peak (and about time too!). Liverpool have beaten Chelsea twice this year, once with a deflected goal and parking the bus, and the other by two goals after Lampard was incorrectly sent off. So Chelsea are about to kick some red rump!
Semi-final? Barcelona, if they make it, have never beaten Chelsea when the two sides both had eleven men on the pitch. Bayern M? Difficult to assess, but recent results indicate they are peaking also.
Arsenal and Man U have more difficult quarter-finals than their fans believe. Every team still in deserves to be, and there won't be any pushovers.
Final? Chelsea or Bayern vs. Pick 'em. Anybody who can be more precise than that will make the bookies very happy!!!

Liverpool will win it all. If you guys remember right Liverpool had a great command of the Premiere league in the beginning of the season. With Injuries afflicting them they lost some games and drew a lot they shouldnt have. With healthy players, they are the best team in the world. If you all watch college football I compare USC to Liverpool. the best big game team every year that seems to lose to some random crappy team they shouldnt.

Benitez has proven himself time and again to be a knockout king in Europe(only). So drawing chelsea again would not do him much harm. Bayern-Barca would have been an interesting match at Rome, but we still gotta see how consistent they are 1st. I'm backing Villarreal to pull off an upset against the Gunners. ManU shd have had quite a shock awakening already, but seeing all the loudmouths above, i really hope Porto would edge them out so that the discussion board can be more peaceful.

All must agreed that Arsenal have FA cup & UCL to play for and Villreal had came from a goal down to win away, so 50-50 match.
Chelsea-Liverpool is even. Bonus is the loser can concentrate on the EPL. Winner here have 2 extra games and a mountain to climb in Braca or B Munich. Its is unlucky that only 1 from 4 here will be in the final.
Manu is lucky to draw Porto,but with so many important EPL games and FA cup semi,pressure is on them, can they win every games?

I can't believe that Liverpool and Chelsea are playing each other in the CL again. Considering that Liverpool are more focused on the league than the CL, I think Chelsea will move on to the semis. Hey, come on John, get your facts right. Manchester United didn't slip up against Mourinho's Porto due to, as you put it, "taking advantage of complacency or adopting the gameplan to beat them". They slipped up because of a Russian linesman who erroneously disallowed a Paul Scholes legitimate goal, which would have made it 2-0 and almost certainly game over. And Mourinho would very likely have remained ... someone no-one had ever heard of.

Arsenal will be the surprise with many players coming back fresh from injuries. I think that they will beat Villareal and upset United. Liverpool have their hands full with Chelsea, but if they survive I would fancy them against either Barcelona or Bayern because of Benitez. He is far more experienced in these ties and has an unparalleled record in the Champions League. Prediction: final between Liverpool and Arsenal, too close to call. If Torres is firing on all cylinders I would give it to Liverpool 3-2.

If find this draw very interesting. Nothing against Porto but it is obvious that Man U got a get out of jail free card this year. If Porto don't over take Man U. Then they are through to the final. I do not see the current Arsenal squad, even with their recent form, able to up turn Man U. Villa a joke. I would have loved to seen Man U and Barca in this quarter final. Well, we've heard a lot have been said of Pool. Being a lucky team, with lucky goals and lucky wins especially enroute to the 2005 trophy. And as usual its the opposite when talking about United. In anything, luck must play a part. Dare to deny that? But we know who will. haha.. And with this kind of draw, who'd say United arent a lucky team either? Haha.. In recent past and manner, Pool seems to strive when tagged as underdog. I guess this draw more or less puts them back as the underdogs and keeps below everyone's radar. as a liverpool fan, i would say its respectable to lose in semis to munich or barca if man utd lose to porto..though winning it would be much better, as long as man u are out, getting further than them is good enough for me

Arsenal are not to be discounted. They have beaten all three english teams this year and are getting healthy. They play the best football in europe and can win on any day. Manu are great but are beatable and Liverpool is overrated, they play well in one tourney and are about to go out against a Chelsea side.

The winner will not be decided on this blog. It is normal to wish all you can to your favorite team, but we all need to see how they wiil play football. The real champion should be the strongest one, not necessarily the best team. At this moment, all teams are enjoying the dream to win the CL. I predict a massive disappointment for most of you.
Advice: You should support the weakest teams who have less to loose.

you guys have it all wrong. barcelona is aiming to be the first spanish club to win the treble. they will walzt through europe with their inventive and attacking style. manchester is beginning to show signs that their quintuple pursuit is wearing on them, liverpool is a torres injury away from being an average side.if barcelona does not come away with the crown this term, look for them next year to produce the good in the home ground of their arch nemesis in the bernabeu

As I am a Man U fan I have to see them retaining the crown but Barca if they are firing on all cylinders are dangerous. Bayern had a Sporting team that forgot how to play defense. I hope that it is a MU Bayern final but it will be a Barca MU one. Man U did get an easy draw this round but how can you say that they have the easiest way to the final when they had to play Inter?

Tough Draw for Liverpool (and Barca and Bayern and Chelski) but Porto and Villareal are no slouches against manu and have 2nd leg at home - even Arsenal can beat manu for sure.
I think Liverpool are coming into the right form and if G and T can play all the games and get some support then they will make the semis and final. Especially helpful if Bayern can beat Barca.
I hope to see Liverpool v manu in Final:

Manchester got the easiest draw by far. This round and for the potential semifinal.
I think they are a lock for Rome.
Then, it will be Liverpool against Barcelona. I give Barcelona and their offense the edge.
So yeah, I think we will have Messi vs Ronaldo, Barcelona vs Manchester in Rome.

As an ardent Arsenal fan of 22 wonderful yrs,i can say that the Gunners are the darkhorses along with Bayern.Most of them said that Man.Utd got an easy path to the final.But dun forget that they need to face Arsenal in the semis to reach the Rome finale if both English teams go thru their quarters and with the second leg to be played at the Emirates!Man.Utd have a poor record at the Emirates havin lost twice and drawn one.I would love to see an Arsenal-Barcelona final again.Coz the neutrals wanted to watch beautiful n entertaining football n not scrappy ones like the previous 2 yrs..

Its hard to say that certainly ManU vs Barca in final. Barca definitely better than Munchen,although they demolished Lisbon. In another hand, ManU has had not so called an easy path... But,don't take it for granted. Liverpool,,sorry to say,not this time. Chelsea,,,victorious not come in a nick of time... Arsenal and Villarreal also a strong contender,but becoming a champion not right now.
Last but not least,,,left ManU and Barca to decide who is the best.
And i think, ManU will make it in their favor...

Chelsea still unbeaten under Guus, playing with confidence and Essien's return are too much for lucky L'pool. The reds are playing well but not well enough to take Chelsea with Essien, Drogba and Carvalho returning to best form. Repeat of last years final Chelsea win 2-0.

Lucky Liverpool??? Is there another team in Europe that has beaten Chelsea (twice), Arsenal, Barcelona, Real Madrid, Juventus, AC Milan, Inter Milan in the Champions League Knockout stages over the past 4 years? I don't think so. Liverpool are the top-ranked team in Europe, and all of those wins have come under Rafa Benitez. He is the best in Europe. The only reason Liverpool lost to Chelsea last year is now playing for Roma (John Arne Riise),so Liverpool make it to the semis. The only big club (no disrespect to Villareal, Bayern) whose name isn't on the list above is Man United, and barring Man U losing to Villareal, they will be added to that list come the day of the final. Liverpool have beaten Man U 6-2 over two games in the Premier League, I predict a 3-1 win for Liverpool over Man U in the final.

Yeh Liverpool is the best team in england at the moment but barcelona the best in europe at the moment. Man Uninted is over rated and are playing pretty poorly at the moment but they do have the easiest trip to the final ive seen in years.
Liverpool have to beat chelsea and then barca to make it to the final. Ide say Man United isn't good enough to beat Barca so either way they will not be able to win the champions league twice in a row. Last years was luck, they needed penalties to beat Chelsea who sum how took down liverpool, probs the own goal by Risse the clown. Shouldve been a man united liverpool final last year in which case liverpool would have easily won.
Hoopefully this year Liverpool can take down 2 of the top 4 clubs in europe!

listen i am a die hard barca fan and i do not for any reason this is going to be a walk in the park BARCELONA must be careful Bayern have history..Ribery klose, tony shweiny, they can all kill you in any moment. Barca need to take care of businees and play with fire. They need to get a good lead in barca because they will suffer in german even though barca can score anywhere...Humility is the best key it 22 men these are not little boys people who think barcelona are just going to run over them are just plain ignorant..this is coming from someone who has played high level soccer..not just highlights on tv....learn the game....DONT FORGET BARCA ARE IN 3 COMPETITITOns!!
