"If you want me to rule out ever being Manchester United manager I can't."

Jose Mourinho's latest round of self-publicity will surprise few. Yet in stating his interest in succeeding Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford he was doing more than to try and unsettle imminent opposition.

A sense of destiny is something that drives the self-styled "Special One" on. His mission was not quite accomplished at Chelsea where even his ego could not outdo that of Roman Abramovich, a man with the attention span and patience of a spoiled child with a playroom full of toys. Life at Internazionale is proving more difficult than he thought, despite a clear lead at the top of Serie A. After getting on so well with the press in the UK, where his preening, sly digs and jocular jibes made him manna to the average hack wanting to hit their word-count with a minimum of effort, Italy's media has not reacted too well to his brash brand of hectoring and wind-ups.

Saturday's statement was this: "In another 86 days I will leave Italy and go on holiday. Will I still be the coach of Inter? In football you never know." He clearly didn't enjoy his nine months out of the game and is getting his pitch in early if things go awry at Inter.

Should United do the unthinkable and win the lot, then perhaps, maybe, possibly, Fergie could decide he's had enough and done enough. Though this quote from the Scot suggests otherwise: "I am scared about thinking about retirement. I have been on the train for so long that when I get off it, I am scared my body will shut down."

Fast forward three years or so and go with the scenario that Mourinho does indeed get the job at Old Trafford. What are we to expect? One comparison is easy to draw, one which is receiving plenty of coverage of late. Brian Clough's 44 days at Leeds United are set to be documented in a major motion picture called "The Damned United", an adaptation of David Peace's wonderful ficto-realistic account of the departed self-confessed loudmouth's darkest and loneliest days in football.

Shortly before his death in 2004, Clough himself made the comparison after Mourinho had won the Champions League with FC Porto. "There's a bit of the young Clough about him," he said. "For a start, he's good-looking and, like me, he doesn't believe in the star system. He's consumed with team spirit and discipline. The players have to fit in with his vision and pattern of play, which is right." Were he around, then Clough might have some advice to give on taking over a dynasty. It might not go much further than a simple use of the word "don't".

Succeeding Don Revie proved to be bridge too far, not least because Clough had long been viscerally critical of "Dirty" Leeds and especially their boss in the years his Derby side had been competing with them for honours. What didn't help was the infamous opening team meeting that had Clough telling the players he inherited from "The Don" that "as far as I'm concerned you can throw all your medals in the bin because you got them from cheating."

Mourinho's relationship with Ferguson is more cordial. Both enjoyed winding up Arsene Wenger as his Arsenal team descended from the Mount Olympus of going a season unbeaten in the Premier League. The Portugese coach's touchline explosion as his team, rather fortuitously, knocked United out of the Champions League in 2004 and a post-match interview in early 2005 that saw Mourinho make a Benitez-style accusation of "Sir Alex was very clever, if you can say that, at half-time by putting some pressure on the ref," with the added barb of United being able to "cheat and cheat", seem to have been forgotten.

Rio Ferdinand recently opened the door on having Jose as his new boss, saying: "If you're talking about someone with the ego and personality to do it, then Jose Mourinho is the name that jumps out at you." In contrast, Sir Bobby Charlton, a man with the club etched into his heart and soul, said: "I would hate for anyone to take this the wrong way but I don't see him (Mourinho) here. He's got a talent but maybe if he ever came here the philosophy of youth football might never be the same again."

To play out the Clough-at-Leeds scenario, Rio seems to be taking on the Allan "Sniffer" Clarke role while Charlton appears to be adopting the attitude that Clough encountered in a hostile Elland Road boardroom. There's plenty of water to flow under the bridge until such a scenario could throw up the possibility of history repeating itself yet maybe Mourinho should heed the warning Clough's failure at Leeds before he starts day-dreaming of working from an office at Carrington. As Karl Marx said: "History repeats itself, first as tragedy, second as farce." Sounds like fun, then.

Clough's family have removed themselves from any association with either the film or novel of "The Damned United", unhappy as they are with its portrayal of a man wracked by demons and coming apart at the seams as he embraces failure for the first time in a long time. While fully understanding their reasons, yours truly will be catching it as soon as it is released to the general public. The question is, will Jose?

jose is a good coach no doubt who carries luck wth him everywhere he goes. He only needs to beat sir fergusion for the illusion of his to be real in terms of managing man u.

Posted by djevat on 03/08/2009

I think that Man.Utd will be the Champions League Winner 2009 they play so well,so perfect and I don t think that some team like Inter will beat them.Glory Glory Man United

Posted by Abdul Jalloh on 03/09/2009

No doubt about it, Jose is a very good coach who carries luck with him where ever he goes. But with footballing great like Sir Bobby Charlton not in favour of him coming to Man U because of Jose's egocentric behavior and pragmatic coaching style against the development of youths. It will be wise for Man U to stick to the phylosophies that had produce trophies, super stars, and made one of the world richest club.

Posted by gu3ss_wh0 on 03/09/2009

Man u is playing very well indeed. but I would prefer to have inter advancing and hopefully at some stage chelsea can play against inter. and that should be more fun to watch.

Posted by praxx on 03/09/2009

@djevat.
the comment is on whether mourinho can coach man utd or not and not whether they can win the champions league so stop saying nonsense.
for your information, mourinho has played against Ferguson 11 times and Ferguson won only once.

Posted by andrew charles on 03/09/2009

jose mourinho as coach of Man United will be a joke. He won the champs league at Porto more by luck then with ability. Once in a lifetime, a team comes along & wins a Major trophy by sheer luck & that's what Porto did. His not winning the same Cup at Chelsea with the best players prove my point. To me, he remains a mere opportunist & a loud mouth.M.United are a team who is known for their brand of fast, entertaining & attacking football for the last 2 decades & have achieve considerable success beyond imagination. If Jose were to manage MU we will see the ultimate destruction of this philosophy! So, don't ever think of pursuing such a thought Jose!!

Posted by Barry Leetz on 03/09/2009

I think you are all too near sighted.
There are only a hand full of coaches who could fit the bill at Man U. and he must be number one as not only has he got the 'runs on the board' he has the personality to match.
How many of you have forgotten 'Dave Sexton?' How many of you have forgotten that if Man. U. had not won the 'FA Cup' all those years ago Ferguson would be filling out hs 'P45'?
He beleaves in 'English' players. 'Him' next door does not!
Leeds is no comparrison, different age, different day.
There is only one and in my humble opinion, he is, without doubt 'The Special One'

They say footballl is unpredictable but when it comes to manu's football the sleek passes, mean defenses and creativity on the pitch is really maiking the club predictable.

Come wednesday evening I bet the score will be man-u 3 intermillan 1 with inter starting the scoresheet. Please watch out this blog.

Jose is losing the plot. His tactics is detrimental to soccer. He is an ugly wooden spoon. Man U do not need a manager like him. He is a bag of wind and we have a reputation to preserve. We do not need a manager that suffers from chronic verbal diarrheoa. Astuteness, intelligence, respect and integrity are the virtues Man U need..

Posted by OLUWAFUNMIBI ADEKUNLE on 03/09/2009

I DON'T SEE JOSE AS THE NEXT MAN UNITED FC COACH BECAUSE A COACH THAT DON'T RESPECT THE PRESS CAN NOT LEAD A TEAM OF GREAT HISTORY LIKE MAN U,AND IF HE WANT TO BE HE SHOULD LEARN HOW TO RESPECT ELDERS,UP MAN U UP RED DEVIL'S.UNITED FOR LIFE

Posted by george on 03/09/2009

If Mourhinho really want the United job maybe Fregies calls him to be his assistant for atleast one season, so we see how hw behaves being number 2 and how the players too will react ... and may he`ll be given a couple of games to try out, But i think he is NOT the man after Fergie

Posted by KCManU on 03/09/2009

May noone has heard what king Eric said at the f some tow weeks ago that if ever he has to manage a club it will be Manu. He also said that he can only manage big players in big clubs. Another one in contention. I would prefer The King by Far.

Posted by ikee on 03/09/2009

Mourinho is not a nice character, has a big mouth,self-styled special one,and on and on...But who else can fill the void that Ferggy has created? The larger than life personality of Ferguson?Give me one name, just a name?A man who puts his name on the line,a man who talks the talk and walks the walk,a man who fears no one(not even Ferguson)...Rio Ferdinard was right, only one name jumps at you...the special one himself.

Posted by Ronaldo on 03/09/2009

Jose is good coach but i think he is good for short run..may be two to three year. To coach ManU..we really need someone like Fergie who has patience and does everything right for long run. Fergie cannot be replace but hope ManU get someone almost equal to fergie.

Posted by Eniola Olaleye on 03/09/2009

Jose Mourinho is a good coach; there's no doubt about that but he will never and can never be the coach of my Manchester United. He is an hypocrite, he distorts facts just to suit his myopic egocentric views. This is a coach that told his players to dive and feign injuries when Porto played Celtic in the 2003 UEFA Cup final; yet he complains of other players diving against his team. He would never have won the Champions League had it not been for a dodgy refereeing decision to disqualify a legitimate goal scored by Scholes when Man Utd played Porto in the 2004 Champions League Round of 16. He is just an opportunist coach that claim glory where he has not really sown or worked. I hate you so much Mourinho; I hate you with so much with a passion. One day, you will surely but truly get what you deserve. I rest my case.

Posted by Charles Damisa on 03/09/2009

Mourinho is good but I don't see him taking over in Man U. He will definitely kill the youth philosophy in Man U. This is bad if it happens. He likes ready-made and 30year old players. In Old Traford we don't like this. Jose, look elsewhere.

Posted by popizie on 03/09/2009

I agree with Andrew ,Mourihno's champions league win with Porto was of a fluke that he can never repeat ever. At Chelsea he had all the money in the world at his disposal. So It's not suprising that he won the premiership twice.Abromovich spoilt him silly. Again at inter , he inherited a team that had already been winning the league for the past 2 seasons or so. So really he hasnt accomplished anything new. He is the most unsuitable manager for Man U that I can think of. His self praise and egotism is not required at old trafford. We need to maintain the same culture that Sir Alex will leave behind. He is a fraudster waiting to be exposed.

Posted by Varun Deshpande on 03/09/2009

This story does have a bit of destiny and supreme irony about it. Being a United fan myself, I know that the club hardly needs more people to dislike it. Mourinho is a great coach and manager no doubt and I would be happy to see him there, but I hope to God that he mellows a bit if he does get the job - at least to an almost socially acceptable level. One angle that hardly anyone seems to have noticed so far, though - Florentino Perez runs for Real Madrid presidential elections once more this year. If he wins (he probably will) I wouldn't be surprised if Mourinho and Ibrahimovic land up at the Bernabeu in the near future (similar to the Wenger - Fabregas theory). Besides which, the quintuple is highly unlikely - I think Inter have a better chance of progressing than United do at the moment (and I really hope I'm wrong) - so it's odds on Fergie will remain in the hot seat for a couple of years yet. Maybe we could have Jose on later...

Posted by buggame on 03/09/2009

I'm more curious as to why Mourinho cannot shutup about the EPL when he is now managing in Serie A and concentrate on beating United rather than professing his wish to manage them. He seems to want people to listen to whatever drivel exudes from his piehole perhaps they should change his name to "The Petulant One"

it's true that this guy scared no one and his wht gave him ego on premiership than any one of them,if u said jose ave the back up of rich man u forget that man u ave more than that b4 jose came to england and man u is the only club then that can buy any player at any price wch give them the chance of claiming all the cup in premiership.stop bulling about apart from poto game they ave met many time agian and he bit him more that 5 time and even rule premiership for three year, then where is man u.u beeter go straight to reality and stop saying rubbish.can u immagine some one say he hate him simply bcos he bit man u or wht and he will still bit them take it or leave it then u will know who is jose, may be u want everybody to bend for sir the way most of the coshes bend in premier league and can not even complain of refere like ur sir,i even had one referee that say dont u know is england captain u r sending out can u immagine that is that right from no 1 referee in england.dey spoil soccer

I never really liked ManU but I must say they're growing on me. I also liked Jose at Chelsea and was heart broken when he got the axe. Do I think he should be the next ManU manager, NO. ManU is a prestigious club and needs a manager with class and good manners. They also have set a standard with the "brand" of football they play which is nice to look and at the same time effective to win many matches. Jose's style of football isn't good to look at. Watching Inter play now has become a chore for me. Don't know who would be the best fit if Fergie goes but a good interim manager for me would be Capelo.

Posted by GeoffJ on 03/09/2009

The challenge of following a legendary successful and highly regarded manager is immense and extremely difficult. Remember the aftermath caused by the vacuum of Sir Matt Busby's departure in 1969 - Murphy, McGuiness Busby back, O'Farrell, Sexton et al? United even ended up in a lower divisions a consequence.

There is an even more recent example of the challenge that today's replacement managers face. After Mourinho's departure from Chelsea we've seen Grant and Scolari try but fail to satisfy the owner's and fans hunger for trophies and instant success.

Jose should be careful what he asks for, he might get a whole lot more (or less) than he expected!

Inter is an ageing team if Mourinho really want us to believe he is as good as he says let him finish his 3 year contract. This will force him to build his own team remember there is no money in Italy.Mourinho has no football philosophy he has to win to keep his image he will never build a team see it go and build another one it takes a man to do that. Its obvious after Inter he will be in Madrid after 2 years he will move again. To me he is a fluke no matter what he wins.He wanted Drogba at Inter when he failed he said Drobga was a diver so Drobga dived&cheated for him.Who is the big scam here

I am a die-hard Manu fan. Yes, dyed in Red to the bones. But then, when one looks at world sport in general and at all the famous eras of the past - say Chicago Bulls-Jordan-Phil J, Australia-Warne-McGrath &co, and the like, one can't help but get apprehensive. When the Sir Alex era comes to an end (alas, like all good things should at some point in time), those boots are going to be mighty difficult to fill. The one way out of it is for Sir Alex to stay around and see to it that another batch of good established fotballers is around by the time he decides to call it a day. Vidic-Wellbeck-Fletcher-Evans-Foster could be the solid nucleus of the next generation of the all-conquering Red Devils...

Posted by Judge on 03/10/2009

that man is no special one, becos he has nothing in him to help United with. He is just a lucky coach as said ealier by Andrew, just not good to fit the place of the Great Sir Alex. because United's youth footbal we crumble, and it took time for Fergie to build United to that standard of football. We don't need him as United's manager

Posted by eric on 03/10/2009

Mourinho was the "enemy of football"called by fifa of Europe.
Also,if not the mistake (is it really mistake?) of the referee,he won't be won the champs league in 2004.
Anyway I think the guy with lucky more the ability of coaching of the football.

Posted by skyeb on 03/10/2009

jose is a good coach no doubt, but man u is an exceptional club that has won all that there is in football because the mgt team is headed by the best .jose has to humble himself to be the best. until then fergie remains No 1

Posted by Leshaodo Tunde on 03/10/2009

The special One (Mourinho) is no doubt a very good coach because, he is a fearless human being that earns respect at anywhere club that he coaches and his profile speaks volume so what are we talking about, so why are some people making noise about the special one taking over Man U, even when a key player in Man U as acknowledged him to be a good manager for their club. Even Fergie himself respects mourinho.

3.he can dela with superstars
4.He can get the best and maximum out of players
6.hes played at old trafford

Jose is a great manager and would fit right into Man Utd's star studded squad. He knows how to impose discipline which is needed at big clubs. His record against man U also reflects upon his tactical genius. However, why worry about the "next manager" of Man Utd or the 2nd best manager in the world when we have the best "Sir Alex" for at least the next 2 years. The bottom line is, when Fergie decides to quit, the next person will be hand picked by Ferguson, which means Man U will be in safe hands. I would like to see Steve Bruce given a shot at it. And as much as I hate Mourinho, I find his personality entertaining and his record respectable.Mourinho's Porto might have won the Champions league by luck but many would argue that Ferguson's Aberdeen won the Scottish league and European cup by luck. Mourinho would be a good Man Utd manager but never great as Sir Alex, hence I believe we should give the "JOB" to one of Fergies proteges. But for now lets beat Inter and continue winning.

Posted by bobby shehu on 03/10/2009

Personally i wouldn't like to see Jose at United. For United fans, have we forgotten about Carlos Queroiz so soon?

Posted by Ryan K on 03/10/2009

how does jose like being called a "voyeur"! remember this one? he's proven nothing to-date. just a nobody who was plain lucky. he's come out to deny he ever said he'd wanted to be Man Utd manager. for once, he's not lying 'coz he knows he's got no value adds to a great team like Man Utd. ask the porto fans how they felt when this "voyeur" hastily took away his CL medal fm his neck & dared said later on that he was threatened - plain imaginary kid stuff to cover up his sickening & egoistic actions. Long live Man Utd. There's ever only gonna be one Sir Alex!

Posted by aham on 03/10/2009

Manchester United is a team that thrives on nurturing its young players. Can Mourhino keep that tradition alive if he does succeed Fergie;that is the million dollar question.

Posted by muyi lee on 03/10/2009

It surprises me to read people being personal and sentimental rather than been factual. Mourinho won the UCL 1n 2004. Didn't the so called big teams of europe in the competition that same year? review EPL before his arrival in England and see what happen after his arrival and then departure. Why are you guys fighting for SAF? SAF himself knows the stuff this man is made of, so why are you just blabing? MOU has not said definitely he would be coming to MAN U or that if he comes heis going thrash the achievement of SAF. Please let us be contructive in our criticism and give honour to whom honour is due. If you say Porto was lucky to have won the UCL in 2004, then what do we call MAN U victory against Bayern Munich in 1999, hard work?
WAKE UP PLEASE. If MU board deem it fit to appoint MOU as the next manager, its either you continue to support the team or go look for another team to support. QED

Posted by primo1404 on 03/10/2009

I keep hearing people mention ManU's youth development but that's just a little part of the bigger picture. ManU does spend alot of money to bring in good quality (senior)players and the majority of their first team players came from other teams. One person asked why we are worrying about Fergie's replacement when he still has two years left but this topic is so hugh the debate will continue for a long time to come. So I listed Capelo as an interim manager and someone else mentioned Steve Bruce but another name that comes to mind is Louis van Gaal. This guy won every trophy possible including CL with Ajax and wasn't by fluke. He's currently with AZ in the Dutch league and they're top of the table. Look out for them next year in the CL.

Posted by Filipo form Prezza on 03/10/2009

The comments about Jose killing the youth movement are ridiculous. A. Porto were a youth side who won the CL. B. Man U has a youth program because everyone wants to play for them. C. Jose can adapt to a low key persona, because he won't have to be like he is now. D. Fergie is just like Jose, people just have blinders on. People should be more worried about what will happen to teh club when AIG has to liquidate.

Posted by zhen on 03/10/2009

filipo: the only problem ManU will have if and when AIG liquidates is looking for a sponsor... it's not like AIG owns the club (or even has any stake in the club as far as i know)... so why should we worry about that??

I think jose is a good coach but will take away the manchester united flare if ever he replace fergie. I think chelsea had a good team under him but the football were not enternaining. I feel the same thing now when i watch inter.

Posted by Abdullahi Isa on 03/11/2009

Mourinho to coach manu? Hmmmm!I find it funny. Manu is not for loud-mouthed coaches. He is good but most suitable for class-less and style-less clubs like Chelsea and Inter. All the clubs he has coached, you find out they are all grit grit no style. Look at the once creative Mikel Obi. Another coach for manu, yes, but Mourinho, absolute no.

Posted by uche oraks on 03/11/2009

In my opinion if jose feelings he is a great coach then he shoukld do the unthinkable and Go for just one season with the smallest team in terms of stars maybe in the italian league or spanish and after a year if the team finishes above the Uefa com placing then he should be think and call himself the special one he hasnt done anything extraordinary in football because he took porto to championleague glory in 2004 if you would ask my opinion not that he played well just that other teams played badly like Man utd, milan and the so called monaco they defended in the final,Dont get me wrong he is Good but he should be calling himself the special one If he call do that like maradona did in his playing days when he moved to a relatively unknown team in italian league then i would consider him But first let him win today i would like to see him the the quarter finals Good luck to him

Posted by kayal45 on 03/11/2009

Man U's youth development is mainly for cash. Majority of the youngsters are offloaded for a sum of money, whether big or (most likely) small. That's hardly youth development. That's the reason why Aaron Ramsey chose Arsenal over Man U, because Arsenal does youth development properly while Man U doesn't. However, this is not to say Man U completely ignores it. They still do it, just not as great as it is hyped up to be. So really, I don't understand Charlton's comments.

Posted by tony dick on 03/11/2009

i really don,t see the reson why we are clamouring for who the next coach should be, i think we better face the match we are having at hand squrely.
if any coach should be appointed thereafter it should be klinsman

andrew charles said: "jose mourinho as coach of Man United will be a joke.He won the champs league at Porto more by luck then with ability. Once in a lifetime, a team comes along & wins a Major trophy by sheer luck & that's what Porto did." I ask you: did you ever saw porto play that year besides with man utd??!!Porto had just won the uefa cup the year before in one of the best finals in the decade agains celtic glasgow. And the following year they were consider by the vast majority of the critics and managers the team with the best football in europe along with ol. de lyon. Yeah sure we've had luck in old trafford, but every team always has to have some amount of luck to win a major competition, that's what is so compelling about football. Remember last year final and the final with bayern?!... Yeah, thought so. ALL of PL should be thankfull for what the "continental" coaches benitez and mourinho have done to premier league, they've helped Pl teams becoming the dominant force in europ

he's been there done that he has good character and beloved by the manu fans and he has shown that he can can lead by example so i think he would be a good choice he can also continue the traditions of manutd

It could have changed the whole complex of the game...I dont see a problem with Jose`...if he becomes a Man United Manager,i will give him my full support even in difficult times, which also happened to Fergie when he was saved by the win against Sheffield in the replay....everyone was saying he`s not a good coach,,now he is suddenly agood coach.Jose` is new in the business, but has won more silverware then the current & more experienced managers like the Rafa`s,,Scolari`s etc.
Give Jose` the chance,,,,should he be appointed manager of Man U,,,,i`m sure there are many teams some of us can join

I do agree with all who say that Jose is a good coach.... But a coach for MU? I doubt it... He is a defensive minded coach. Sir Alex's philosophy is beautiful attacking soccer, you score 3, we will score 4.
How many of you enjoyed watching Jose's Porto & Chelsea? They did win titles, but they cannot come close to the awe-inspiring style that the current MU team wins title. I think Jose will kill the legacy of MU if he becomes manager and I fully agree with Sir Bobby Charlton. Unless, Jose somehow learns to play beautiful attacking soccer, I wouldn't want him at MU!
Glory Glory Man United!!!
