Rafa Benitez has been my man of the season so far. Though maybe not for the right reasons; he just keeps writing headlines for us. That seems likely to last until the end of this season at the very least. Here’s my thoughts on his latest ill-tempered outburst.
Liverpool's 1-0 defeat to Everton threw up further questions around the mindset of their manager.
Rafael Benitez's post-match comments were a model in self justification and did little service to his team or their opponents, who were worthy if tardy winners on the night.
Football managers are not expected to be good losers yet they are still expected to show grace in defeat. When questioned about the injury to Steven Gerrard, Benitez used the potential absence of his best player as proof that he had been correct to sub his captain as they conceded vital points to Wigan.
The man who prior to the weekend's victory over Chelsea claimed to never read the newspapers said: "When I took him off there everyone was saying he had to play every single minute of every match. Now you have seen the consequences."
Further proof, along the lines of his "that is a fact" anti-Ferguson rant, that the Spaniard's imbued sense of self-worth seems to have overtaken his players' welfare. His words featured little sympathy for the player who has done most to keep his team in the hunt for honours.
He went on: "We are really disappointed, to play for a long time with 10 men and to concede like that from a deflection at the end, you have to be disappointed.
"The turning point of the game was the second yellow card for Lucas, I was not happy, but I do not want to say anything about the referee." Benitez went on to say that his Brazilian midfielder, also responsible for the mistaken hack which cost Liverpool a penalty at Wigan, had not touched Tony Hibbert. Those watching on TV, even those UK viewers denied seeing Dan Gosling's winner by ITV's pathetic coverage, will say that referee Phil Dowd gave the only decision he could give, having booked Lucas earlier. They should also applaud Gosling's teenage skill and determination in settling the tie.
David Moyes meanwhile, with a glint in those piercing blue eyes, was only too happy to celebrate his team's success "with a lot of class and dignity". The Scot was making more than a passing reference to the Spaniard, who two years ago called Everton "a small club" and also to the Spaniard's post-match comments about Moyes' tactics after the first, drawn match in the tie.
Benitez had continued his jibes by comparing Everton's tactics to those he adopted when he was a coach at one of Spanish football's minnows, "I have never played like that here, and never did this while I was at Valencia, maybe at Extremadura a few times," he said.
Game, set and match to Moyes on this occasion. The football, with the best of a bad lot played by Everton, had done his talking for him.
Meanwhile Benitez, with his prepared "dossiers", his airing of the club's dirty linen in public and his assertion that Robbie Keane would still be a Liverpool player after the transfer window, let alone the cold shoulder treatment meted out to the Irishman, is losing credibility with every public utterance.
His team remain in a fine position to win their first championship in a generation yet, with his surly behaviour and overt snobbery against his opponents, their manager can make them as unpopular a title winner as Chelsea and Manchester United ever were.

Hi,
what makes you think that football managers is a breed that can understand what they are saying?
Most of them are small time educated because football and school is an unlikely pair.
And you do want them to clarify thoughts that are for them nuclear power theory.
Most of them are simply egoistic grown up players, and for the most part not very good ones at that.
Just in case of wondering why soccer is sliding downhill with broken brakes....

Good column/blog. As a Blackburn fan, I would prefer to see Liverpool win this year over yet another title for Chelsea or Man United. But Rafa's rants are a real turn-off, and that is a fact.

I agree. Something is just not right with Benitez since the kidney stones. He is illogical, angry, defensive, and is not inspiring confidence in any of us supporters. The Keane fiasco just shows how much is wrong with the Liverpool house. This summer will see some change, likely Parry and/or Benitez out, likely some new owners. I just hope that the core of the team, which is quite good, stays intact, with the addition of a few flair players.

I'm starting to wonder if the writers would react differently had Rafa not been a foreigner. I mean if an English manager like Harry or Irish like O'Neil had only lost three games in all competitions by the first week of February on a team with a very public ownership fight, they would be hailed as "World Class" or even a "Genius". I think Rafa has done a good job turning Liverpool into contenders on the domestic and European fronts....end of story

Unfortunately, its seems the media has got the best of you lot, and now public enemy number 1 seems to be benitez...
after mourinho left, the media needed to fill the void, unfortunatly, it seems they've set their eyes on rafa benitez. Its really a shame now that every word he has got to say is blown out of proportion and made to appear venomous.

if he wins the title, then i cannot see how "popular or unpopular a title winner" becomes relevant. This is simply an outrageous statement. I simply cannot understand the crazy scrutiny on Liverpool Fc. by all you guys especially when you chaps have something negative to write about. Really crazy. Just reading Gerrard out for three weeks and then "Ups and Down" what was that all about. Do you write this for Arsenal, Chelsea, Villa, westbrom. etc ??? No!!! simply glaring bias towards Liverpool.

Could not agree more with this article. Benitez just can't keep his cool when he needs to. Even as a United fan I can appreciate the effort of the team for staying in the race (and the fact that they have not lost to any of the so-called big 4 this season) but their manager is letting them down with his constant moans.
A good example of the tact and style top class managers should behave is when Arsene Wenger was asked what he thought about Benitez' "fact sheet" rant at Fergie to which he replied;
"Here's a fact for you - I have no comment"

Benitez acts like a spoilt child! Blames everyone else,...but his players and himself! He's nothing but a crybaby! He has nothing good to say about match officals or fellow managers!
And NEVER,ever,gracious in defeat!

HAHAHA. This will get the silly liverpool fans so riled up... but well said Mr Brewin. Most of us feel the same way as you, particularly the utd fans for the criticism aimed at utd by Benitez only for us to see how the FA treat liverpool so leniently. If it was possible i would love to see your views on why Benitez escaped FA censure folliwing his outburst against fergie, the refs and the FA and also questioning their integrity (which i believed was against FA rules)
because he escaped censure, he seems to think he can say whatever he wants and abuse anyone he sees fit. Benitez is the biggest hypocrite in the English game. With Gerrards injury.. watch Feb turn to the month of utter disaster for Pool. Third placed finish is what they should be hoping for.

Yet another opportunity for a member of the media to sensationalise and bring a manager and football club down. Liverpool, in particular Rafa Benitez, can do litle right when it comes to media judgement. Have you considered the intense pressure that football managers are under? Have you paused to consider some of Mr. Benitez's perceived grievances (conveyed in broken English words that paper and electronic media love to twist), often in the glare of a camera light just minutes after a disappointing draw or most recently defeat, are taken full advantage of by the likes of you?
José Mourinho typified arrogance and 'snobbery' yet the English media held the self proclaimed 'special one' up as some sort of demi-god!
Tall poppy's are there to be hacked down and journalists such as yourself, who I hazard to guess have never played nor managed football at any significant level, are only too happy to sink the boot in.
I want to continue but I am running out of character space!!

well put.
it seems as if rafa is making sure he has as many excuses as possible for not being able to deliver the title this season.
while not a liverpool supporter, i would much rather benitez had not been pushing his disruptive rotation policy, and putting more emphasis on the league these past few seasons. the champions league victories were huge, but they do little to offset the frustration of watching one of england's top teams faltering week to week in their own league. everton may not be in the top four but they certainly are deserving of their victory over liverpool.

you are spot on on the liverpool manager. am a kop supporter here in kenya and i believe the time has come for liverpool to look for another manager. coz seriously i dunno y he has to field lucas(would have luvd it if he had gone for kevin nolan who is much better than lucas) whom i knew was going to cost us and the issue of the cold treatment to keane now gerrard is hurt and unless a miracle occurs am sure he will want to bring liverpool down with his team selection. thanks and keep it up

A few points I would like to comment on.
The media need someone to attack, the trend is to attack Benitez at the moment. Scolari or Wenger are not in a very different situation, at least Benitez is justifying the loss, and not saying comments of self defeat like Scolari.
Saying that a player will stay and afterwards he leaves is nothing new in the football world.
I thought this blog would be a professional one with unique thoughts. Well there's still hope, it's just your second post.
Good luck!
PS: Not a Liverpool fan.

Editor's eyes are never open would be a better title for this column.
It is getting quite arduous to read the same yarn day after day. In my opinion, Benitez has turned an average side into genuine contenders during the time he has spent at Anfield. Furthermore, he has done this with significantly less resources than his closest rivals. Even so, Benitez is critised for every single decision he makes - and what's worse, by twisting his words.
At least you had the decency to admit it yourself: the representatives of the media are just looking for headlines. It's shame that professional pride and investigative journalism seem to be unfamiliar concepts nowadays.
One question though: Why the double standards on Benitez and Liverpool? Is it too much to ask for the same criteria when assessing Scolari, Wenger or - dare I say it - Ferguson? Unfortunately the answer to the latter question seems to be positive.

I'm a Liverpool fan and the one thing that has disappointed me most recently has been Benitez's treatment of Robbie Keane. Actually, it's one of the most disappointing things to have happened at LFC in years.
Keane is a genuinely talented player who genuinely loved Liverpool. Rafa has retained the services of players with half Keane's ability (Ngog and Kuyt) and cast Robbie aside in an attempt to get one over on the owners of the club and Rick Parry. To say nothing of the shameful lack of respect shown to Keane, can anyone imagine United, if they had only two forwards of genuine talent, selling one on, 6 months after signing him and at a loss, in the middle of the most important league season in 19 years? It would be unthinkable. But it happened at Liverpool.
And days later, Gerrard gets injured. The ideal replacement? Keane. Where is he? Back at Spurs. Ferguson must be loving this.
Benitez, you've done a great job in general. The Keane fisaco is, however, a low point. Fact.

Waa..waa..waa.. The Waiter is an arrogant, excuse making git who cannot make changes on the run to save a game. Without his "Big" players in form he is useless and a bitter, bad sport. Everton in 6th place and without a recognised striker drew with Arsenal, Liverpool twice, lost to a single penalty against United and then beat Liverpool in the Cup. This is an admirable run where Moyes has had to create a team that could achieve results on a very, very limited budget and with a threadbare squad. Let's see The Waiter go to a team without a budget and try to make any impact. He would be on the first ferry back to Espanol! Bye bye Beni!!

As a Liverpool fan I have to say I have been very disappointed in Rafa this year. Perhaps his grasp of English is such that he can now speak his mind, but I preferred he leave his talking on the field. His constant rants against negative tactics is crazy because of course 'lesser' teams are going to play defensive. Good teams should be able to break that sort of thing down. I just don't see where that creativity is going to come from. Certainly not Lucas, who is barely an average midfielder and a self destructive defensive liability.
Something has to give among the management, whether its Benitez, Perry, or those embarrassing owners, because there has been precious little movement toward improving the team beyond Torres and Skrtel. Its clear this whole Keane debacle was due to behind the scenes power struggles and its too bad the player was stuck in the middle.

very anti rafa bias in the media. as a liverpool fan ive been frustrated with some of his decisions & team selections. i can see the failings in his teams but also the strengths. he is doing what any manager would do and defending his team. if mourinho was saying the things he has been it would be brilliant management, taking heat away from the players or some other bullshit line these tosser journalists come up with. liverpool are up against it to win the title. united are the strongest squad with the experience of title wins. but liverpool have progressed under rafa despite what anyone says. we are seeing a decaying side in chelsea that get very little negative press. we see the wonderful wenger and his brilliant youngsters in a scrap to finish 4th. yet their issues are swept under the carpet in the press. benitez team are now challenging for the title and all we hear about is his continual screw ups. if pool do win title will he be praised w the same ferocity as he has been vilified

I have to agree with Mr. Brewin on this one.No doubt Benitez had won a couple trophies with Liverpool since he came to England, but that can't justify the act of him blaming everybody else on his own failures. The "crazy" thing that he talked about in the Stoke, Wigan and Everton game baffled me. Was he talking about that his team's ineffectiveness of opening up the games? If that's is the case, why don't he just admit that his team's just not good enough on those occasions? Or was he trying to blame other teams of not lying down and let his team took all 3 pts home? Now this is crazy.
And for those who keeps on talking about Rafa managing with less resources than other big teams, you might have some merits if you're comparing to Chelsea 3-4 years ago. Other than that, nah! Just look at your current roster and compare it to the one who won you the CL in 05, you'll see. How many of them are in common? Gerrand, Cara and Hyppia? who else? How much it cost for EVERYBODY else?

Rafa's complaints and excuses have become really boring and as an Everton supporter it's become even more tiresome because we've had to play them 3 times in the past two weeks or so.The other point I'd like to make is that when you are challenging at the top then of course there will be more media scrutiny on you and when you make mistakes, then they WILL be highlighted. It's not that the media are being overly critical of Liverpool or picking on Rafa Benitez! It's part and parcel of being involved in the title race, so they should just learn to deal with it...preferably without whingeing so much!

I have to disagree on many front on this bias review
1)Everton worthy winner? they defended with 10men in all 3 matches, and only won becos we played with 10 mean for 44 mins
2)Benitez does not need to show sympanty on every press conference, gerrad is not complaining why are u?
3)the refree on the night is referee Alan Wiley no Phil dowd, given your bias review i am not surprise u got your facts wrong
4)What do you expect to say about keane? the fact is they included him in CL squad, obviously its a late decision to sell him. How much does he know about the deal or he is involve in the deal, do you know or can you prove? If you can't prove it, your honesty comments do not hold ground at all..
5)Whether his rant is surly behaviour or an act of genius we will not know until the end of season, like you say we have never been in a better postion in years, keep faith all liverpool fan out there, kicking slating rafa now do not help...we should do what we can, keep supporting the team.

Another biased and useless editor!
Rafa is a genius and without him Liverpool FC will be 10 years behind...
As a true Liverpool fan, I understand the genius of the man.
Benitez simply stated the facts, the match changed with the sending off of Lucas. We were pushing Everton all the way up until that point. You have a short memory.
United also keep pushing teams and the breakthrough happens at the end of the games, we did the same but lost the advantage with the sending off.
Another useless basher.

Rafa is nearing his end in the Kop.. YOu just can sense it..
First, How can he expect the same treatment with a legend such as SAF? SAF has won everything in Football and keep doing it year by year. If Rafa want to be in SAf's league, he should manage Liverpool for 20 more years and won at least 10 EPL.
Rafa has little resources in Pool? come on, he practically wash Kop's money down the toilet with his signings. Dossena, Leiva, Babel, Aurelio, Pennant, Keane, Degen, Insua, and the list can go on and on. Can someone come up with a figure how much he has spend as Liverpool's manager? I have a feeling it will be a surprise..

This article is totally devoid of objectivity. Leave Rafa alone, Brewin. Rafa's words are being taken out of context, a media speciality. His comments aren't unique, others like Wenger and SAF speak them out but with much less publicity. Rafa's not egoistic and has been a model of consistency in this league. He's been humble, not talking much about others, and focusing on his team. So what's the prob? Rafa is in truth a superb coach, with personal frustrations like everyone I know. He's NOT infallible, but his defects are just like those of others. What do you expect RB to say or feel when you literally camp in his face and magnify each word he utters? Would you be happy yourself? For the one who called LFC fans 'silly', no prob. In truth, the media and critics are afraid of Liverpool's reemergence as a force. This is purely down to Rafa. We've overachieved under the Spanish genius and are inching closer to the top. Just drop this stale topic please.

Not sure why so many people are criticizing Brewin's post.
Perhaps the media can justifiably be called "anti-Rafa" but it is very clear Benitez fully deserves the brickbats. Really, do any of the other top managers behave in the way he does? Launching personal attacks on fellow managers, belittling other clubs, publicly airing the problems in the boardroom... who else does all these things?
Even though Wenger may be selectively myopic from time to time and Mourinho, when he was still at Chelsea, could be a real arse when he wanted to be (especially in the Anders Frisk incident), the media tend to be more favourable to them because they know when not to behave like spoilt children. Let's face it, if any manager displays the kind of impudence and petulance that Rafa regularly does - recall especially his infamous repeating of "As always I am focused on training and coaching my team" - then he'll deserve whatever the media throws at him.

Wow. So many comments without any substance. everyone is a proper pundit here. Shame youre all peddling the same noisome crap. How many managers in the EPL have won the premiership? 2, how many EPL bosses have won the UCL? 2. Those 4 achievements belong to Sir Alex. Wenger & Benitez. Those are the only facts. There are only managers or top quality in the EPL all else is selling of space to advertisers. The modern press is geared towards self-aggrandizement, dont get caught in their silliness- you think opticians all have 20/20 vision. Win Lose or draw my season is not one whole but a mosaic of ups and downs, trials & tribulations. Praise him or cuss him; its irrelevant as long as you dont pay his wages and those that do feel they are getting more than value for money eh! But you musn't forget- what do to Americans who have built seperate billion-euro sports franchises know about success?
