It is quite apparent that once the sting had been taken out of the title race with Man United’s comeback on Saturday, the emphasis and thought process suddenly turned towards the Champions’ League on Wednesday.

Had United slipped up and lost some points on Saturday afternoon I feel that the Stoke match would’ve been played out completely differently. Maybe it was about time that the lingering hopes of a title upset were finally extinguished.

Roman Abramovich, Carlo Ancelotti and the Chelsea players have their eye on one prize – the Champions’ League.

I personally think that this year’s sentiments from the faithful, too, are with the tournament that has caused us all so much upset over the years.

This year represents a great opportunity to reach the final in London, and not to mention the chance of exacting revenge on the team who beat us in the final 2 years back.

United are in a blip of their own, 4-2 against West Ham aside. Their defence is looking particularly fragile at the moment, with Vidic and Smalling for 45 minutes struggling to contain Carlton Cole. Faced with Torres and/or Drogba and/or Anelka will be a much tougher challenge than this weekend’s opponents.

Chelsea meanwhile have a slight defensive problem with the fact that Luiz is not eligible for Champions’ League duty with us, it leaves Ancelotti with the right back conundrum, no doubt he will opt with Ivanovic in the middle and Bosingwa on the right.

In my opinion this leaves us a little light in that position, Bosingwa is prone to attacking too much and offering too little defensively. Without Alex, though, there is no real solution to this problem. In my opinion putting the little utilised Ferreira in that position would be far bigger a risk to take.

The midfield will have to aid where it can in that case, it’s a tricky one because they need to be both ready to throw their weight around in front of the defence and be equally as ready to support the front line in the case of attacking play.

If it was up to me (it isn’t) I would ensure that Essien remains as far back as possible, with Ramires roaming around the centre of the park ready to pick up and loose balls and tracking back when needed. Lampard needs to be left further forward, and less inclined to help at the back. He is the one who can spot that killer pass, we don’t need him running around trying to win every ball. Ramires is more than capable, and Essien is an exceptionally talented ball winner.

There’s nothing much to change about the front line, the obvious fact has been stated on many occasions. They need service. With the midfield often going missing and acting as defenders too often, the attackers have regularly been rendered useless as their creative players aren’t finding them often enough.

The game will surely have a massive intensity about it, it would be disappointing to play at home – where we have an incredible record in Europe – and not try and grab the bull by its horns. To win the tie, we need a home win. Grabbing an away draw is certainly plausible, score or otherwise so Wednesday is all about getting up and at them and ensuring we take a lead to Old Trafford.

Saturday’s league game is a mere sideshow again, this is what we have all been looking forward to and the tension in waiting for Wednesday (and subsequently next Tuesday) is becoming palpable. I just hope the players feel the same.

As far as i'm concern, i hope your logic or strategies work out fine but meanwhile, our last game against Stroke city was the coach's fault how on earth can you remove Ramires and Anelka at the same time when we all saw the nonsense Malouda was playing he should have use is initiative to replace Malouda for Torres and return Anelka to the mid-field and let Drogba and Torres mount preasure on Stroke defence while Ramires and Anelka are to drive the ball in, secondly i think its time you need to caution Lampard on his selfish games he plays now adays, He needs to be warned. Up Blues, wish all fans VICTORY OVER OUR RIVALS MAN U.

It's interesting that the sting going out of Chelsea's title race is a result of United's comeback rather than Chelsea's inability to climb over Stoke. Wednesday's game looks a fairly even tussle; Chelsea stronger in the middle of the park while United pose more threat in attack.
But one factor not mentioned by our author is United's winning mentality. It may sound cliche, but the Red Devils simply don't know how to quit. It's what got them home against West Ham and has so often been the difference in their many titles won under Sir Alex. United know how to play for 90 mins, regardless of the scoreline. Come May, United will deserve to crack the champagne for a 19 title.
Chelsea may come out on top at Stamford bridge. But somehow, even if United return to Old Trafford on the end of a 3-1 loss, they'll feel confident of beating Chelsea 2-0 at home and progressing on away goals. Back Chelsea over the two legs at your peril.

Interesting analysis, David. I think your comments about the midfield responsibilities make sense. I'd also like to see Malouda get back to the creative and productive role he played not so long ago.

Service to the strikers has been spotty and stilted, without fluidity and speed in counter attack. This has led to predictability of play in the last quarter of the pitch. In some recent matches, we seem to want to either walk it into the net or blast away in frustration - which plays into the hands of less talented but tenacious teams that stack the penalty area.

The fluid counter attack is replaced far too often, I think, with the long ball from Cech - and this wastes a lot of possessions. Sometimes it works for Drogba but most often, we just lose possession. I wonder why there isn't more of an emphasis on higher-percentage passing to get the ball upfield. Maybe if Ancelotti takes your advice on the midfield, that will fix all this (grin)!

Beat Man U!

Let's be honest. When Chelsea went through that dip mid-season, exclamated by the thumping they received at the hands of Arsenal, that effectively ended their title hopes. They counted on United dropping a lot of points. The simple fact is that United looks like a tight unit that plays well together and Chelsea look like a collection of talent that clicks once in a while. I can't remember the last time I watched Chelsea and was in awe of the talent on the field.

up manu long life united we hav wht it take 2 beat chelsea bcous champion is not premiership no ojoro just set and watch soccer up manu up united no shacking manchester

I think tonight game is going to be very tough. Drogba is very sensitive if he'll be a substitute and starting line being Anelka and Torres.

Rise up falling fighters, rise and take your stand again. Is he who fights and run away, who lives to fight another day.its another day of victory for Chelseafc, today we will banish the ghost of Russia ECL defeat.victory is sure.4-o!

I believe our problem over time has been selection and the right partnership. The team is good and can over run any opponent but as it is, Chelsea has a lot of work to do. We need to watch our defence and make sure we don't lose the midfield.........the goal will come even if our attackers are not scoring. MAN.U gets frustrated if their game plan fails to work and that should be our focus. Look at all the matches they have lost at the bridge to understand what am talking about

I think Manu are going to come out guns blazing like they did against Marseile. Their biggest challenge is maintaining concentration at the back. I am sure they'll get it right this time round against Chelsea. Can't think of much Chelsea has done this season to suggest they can go all the way. Romans millions can only buy a domestic league championship here and there. No chance of European Champions. Wait , may they can pull a Liverpool on us like a couple seasons ago with a rabits foot and a few four leaf clovers.

The reported footage of Ancelotti laughing and joking with Torres this week suggests he is doing his part to rebuild confidence, which is crucial to this game. Because the fact is that Vidic is scared sh**less of Torres, so we need to have him running at the Serb whenever possible. Drogba must also start, as Smalling will never be able to handle him physically. Anelka should start on the bench, and we should go with the 4-4-2 that has a better chance of winning the battles out wide. Zhirkov should start over Malouda, which will also help in that respect. Drogba and Torres need to be switching places, and if their respective markers follow, Lampard/Essien/Ramires need to exploit the space that will surely open up. And for God's sake, Ivanovic. Learn to close down Wayne Rooney when he has the ball.

I really think they are going to lose 1-0 to Manchester and I think that Rooney is going to get a goal that hots the post then goes on.

Oooooohoooo Ancelotti is a very poor coach he can never manage chelsea. what the hell deed he think he is doing, he is confuse he should better resign before get fired. And to all ma CHELSEA fans goodoos for the second leg next week. I LOVE CHELSEA with all ma heart, ma soul, ma body.

i hate to say this, whenever chelsea talks, they lose. when they were concentrating and off the pressure 2-3 months back, they came back on track. And then there was this talk about blues possibly winning this and that, cech and ancelotti talking up hopes again. i fear the worst.

I think Lampard and mauluda are the biggest problem. They don't pass and lack creativity
