It's difficult to find many positives at this current time as a Chelsea fan.

This is undoubtedly our lowest period for a fair few years, something that was bound to happen, but something maybe we shouldn't be so surprised at?

For Ancelotti to be taking the full flak of this is heresy in my opinion, 11 dropped points in our last 5 games is not far from disastrous but the players must stand up and take the blame.

Players surely to blame for dark moment. ©Getty Images

As the title of this blog says, there must be a sense that our overachievement of the last year has finally come to an end.

I say overachievement because if you were to step back and look at the lack of investment and the ageing of already not too young players, winning the double was nothing short of spectacular.

I'm not saying that we didn't deserve our victories last year, we were superb. But what I am saying is that we achieved those feats with a team of players who performed outstandingly.

Now they are having a bad spell it reflects within the team. Drogba is certainly not the deadly Ivorian of the last few seasons, and Malouda can't carry the team all the time.

In fact I think it would be fair to say that asides from Malouda, Cole, Cech and Anelka we really haven't had any great performers in the last month.

Kalou once again frustrates. Thankfully with his glaring misses he brings the odd important goal - as he did yesterday.

But this is a player who has been trying to force a place off the bench for four seasons, he just doesn't do enough to warrant a starting place for me.

The unfortunate situation with Sala is, for all of his goals there are far more important misses. His goal yesterday was taken well, his miss was glaring. And this is not exactly the first example.

It isn't all negative. As mentioned Cole, Cech, Anelka and Malouda have been great, not great enough to carry a team of XI all by themselves though.

Mikel has been great this season, there were flashes of his old self yesterday when he gifted possession away for the move that led to the goal - in his defence there was an awful lot of football played in between his misplaced pass and Andy Carroll finishing.

Ramires showed signs of improvement too, he was far more physical and more eager to jump into the challenge yesterday. A sign of better to come?

The main thing to remember with Chelsea is during this (in the word's of Carlo Ancelotti) "bad moment", we are far weaker than last season.

Alongside injuries to our leader's on the pitch, Terry & Lampard, we have a lack of Ballack on the bench, and not forgetting Carvalho (although this is arguable as he is currently getting battered by Barcelona!).

A player like Ballack would be indispensable in a time when we are missing two major players in the middle of the pitch. His physicality is certainly missed, I have always stated that he was a great influence, he could break play up and had bundles of experience.

Our midfield without this sort of player is very lightweight. Ramires may be improving, but he is easily bypassed by attacks and at this time really isn't providing enough creativity.

The European game in midweek showed us our longest glimpse of McEachran thus far, maybe he really is a viable option for that midfield role. I wouldn't be as skeptical of it as I may have felt previously.

Kakuta played very well too, it was odd that Kalou replaced him against Zilina, but it could have been a question of experience.

There is a lot to feel down about at the moment, but I think we need to be realistic and the reality is that without further investment and the injury problems we are experiencing, could we really maintain a serious title challenge and gun for Europe too?

This could all change, I hope I'm proven wrong. But there is a sense of foreboding for me at the moment, we have a ridiculous schedule of tough games in December. We can't possibly take full points, at this rate we'd be lucky with any. Something needs to change.

Much has been said in the press about Wilkins leaving having its effect on the team. I don't particularly believe that. This is much of the same team who lost their mentor Mourinho and managed to take Avram Grant to the Champions' League final!

The other stories about Abramovich wanting a set up like Barcelona are almost laughable. He employed an Italian manager - the exact opposite to the Catalunian style - and must be dreaming that you can suddenly transport their way of play across countries. It ain't gonna happen.

Clubs who win things have to pick themselves up when they are down, we've done it before and I pray to god we can do it again. It is a thoroughly tough time for us, we should count ourselves lucky that we are only two off top.

So on that rather sombre note.

Keep The Blue Flag Flying High (Even when you're down!).

We will definately rise again , like the ressurection of the phoenix only the players and the coaching staff having to belive that yes we can

Posted by steven on 11/30/2010

if chelsea don't buy a new star player or make a star from academy, in 2 years chelsea will not compete for champions league places.

Posted by BlueBlooded on 11/30/2010

Good writeup. I think C.A should give the young players a chance. Burma should have bn used on some of those matches. I mean, when will they ever get the exposure the need to take over from these aging boys? or is carlo going to sign four big players in the next two seasons? We really don't have a solid bench. Hey Benayoun would have been a good replacement for Lamps if he isn't injured. That said, i believe a win against everyone is all we need to give our season the spark it needs. Lets stay blueblooded.

sounds like the onwner is getting bored and doesnt want to buy any new toys for the team

Ancelotti made some mistakes by not signing replacement for Carvalho,Ballack and Deco.i think JOSH MCEACHRAN should be given a chance to play often especially now that Chelsea lacks creativity players in the mid field.UP BLUES WE'LL BOUNCE BACK

Posted by TommyGun on 11/30/2010

I totally agree that Ballack is the missing link right now. Remember how he held the midfield together at the end of last season when Essien AND Mikel were missing. Now with Mikel fit, he could have easily covered for Essien and Lamps. Not to mention how much our youth could have learned from him.
If we buy Luiz, Lukaku and Schweinsteiger, I think we'll be fine with our up and coming crop of youngsters.
Shame we weren't more forceful and allowed Man City to get Adam Johnson though...

Posted by awarebobo on 12/01/2010

Chelsea wil definitely fail if carlo continues like this, drogba is jst a total failure giving away possesion so cheaply, sturdrige why is he on d bench that young lad has shown the desire to play. I think he should be starting every game. We should stop beating around the bush, drogba is finished

Posted by Sailor on 12/01/2010

Cover is required at the back(central defence),Cenral midfield position..nid 4 variation and that i bliev an all out winger especially a right footed winger is required bcoz when we get beaten we jus dnt hav alternative systems nor players 2 put on.also an all out striker is required who cud provide motivation 4 both anelka n drogba not to rest on their lorells..Hangerland(fulham)..Richardson(Sunderland)..Young(villa)...Agbonlahor(villa)..no fancy stars.

i think ramires is not contributing anything to chelsea football.

Posted by Dean on 12/01/2010

I dont mind the dropping of points over the last month but dam, we need some leaders back and back QUICKLY... look at our next fixtures - Everton (H), Spurs (A), Man U (H), Arsenal (A). All our home games are a must win, but in saying that its gonna be hard if we have the squad we have now. Thankfully we have a decent gap between Man u and Arsenal game of 8 days. And lets just say once Lampie and JT are back, baring theres no other injury problems, we are gonna be flying again.

Posted by ADIGUN on 12/01/2010

WELL EVERYTHING THAT IS HAPPEN IS DUE TO INJURIES OF SOME KEY PLAYER BUT TO ME JOSH IS MORE PREFERABLE THAN RAMIRES IN THE MIDFIELD

Posted by Olabode on 12/01/2010

Good Write Up. There is no doubt that we need to buy, but i also believe that we should put faith in our youngsters too. CA should give them the experience, they can't get the experience on the bench. Blues for LIFE.

Posted by ifeanyi on 12/01/2010

there is always ups and downs in every thing so in football and in particular chelsea will not be an exception.

Posted by Jerome on 12/01/2010

awarebobo.....are you ok in the head mate.....drogba finished...my god what is wrong with you, he is one of the most talented players and has some of the best experience in the team. Anyway, if CA doesn't at least buy 1 defender or a holding mid (or both) we can't contend and regain our strength that we had last season (ballack, carv, belletti(useful in emergencies, cole, deco) all strong, good tacklers, ball control and holding defenders and mids gone...with nothing gained from it......we need some young, skillful players to that can keep up with the english game!

Essien=Chelsea's Savior

my blood runs blue!!

Posted by FlyingBlues on 12/03/2010

Totally agree with you on Ballack. Too many players were let to go too soon. I believe Ramires will improve. But I am still unable to understand why was Benoyoun signed. We all saw him at Liverpool and I dont think it was a smart signing.
Also seeing Ferreira play now, I must say that selling him would have been an excellent decision instead of selling Carvalho.
Drogba has not been at his best and we did miss JT and Lampy.. Zhirkov also failed to impress me. I am confused about whether he is a LWB who can play in the midfield or otherwise?
In January. they should go for a Defender, Midfielder and Striker of appropriate exp and at fair price. I heard Srna was in the mind of CA but he is RWB again and we already have too many RWBs.

Posted by Owo Omo Apase on 12/03/2010

Thanks for the write up. Chelsea needs to sign young and mobile striker like Luiz suarez.Drog is getting old,he is dropin skills and agility. We have to strenghter our attackin department very well, we don't really have much problem in the midfield and defence, because attacking is the best form of defence, if we can add more dangerous attackers to this current squad, we would remain formidable. Also,CA needs to give the likes of Josh and Kakuta more confidence by featuring them regularly . Sturrigde and Kaluo should be loaned to other clubs to earn more experiences and exposure.

Posted by Carlos on 12/03/2010

the club is doing great..bt i think the club needs a new star in midfield too improve and once again be crowned champions!

Posted by steve on 12/04/2010

what a brutal, horrible, RETARDED article. I had moderate respect for this writer before this, but this proves you have no idea what you are talking about. OUR BEST PLAYERS ARE INJURED. its not rocket science, when your best players are hurt you dont perform as well. DUHHHHHHH. you IDIOT. we've missed essien, lampard, terry, alex, drogba, for a substantial length of time. it is NOT overachievement. we are currently UNDERACHIEVING. you MORON. A chelsea correspondent claiming underachievement is blasphemous. Just ridiculous, GUARANTEED when our players are back we begin to dominate again, we are the best team in the premier league and we will win it again this year. Do yourself a favor and quit writing articles you idiot.

Posted by David Kyle on 12/04/2010

Steve, please read the heading where there is a large question mark asking questions of overachievement.

If you think that losing 3 games out of 4 is laudable then good on you, I am simply expressing my opinion.

Calling me an idiot? Well how very clever of yourself, just a shame you had to lean on your CAPS LOCK BUTTON SOOOOO MUCH. DUHHHHHH!

I hope we begin to dominate once more. I'm pretty sure I know what I'm talking about, I have just had to witness a poor month and think that we are finally being caught out.

Last season was a poor season from all the big clubs, and we overachieved with an ageing squad a lack of money.

THANKS FOR READING THOUGH, NICE TO KNOW YOU ONCE HAD MODERATE RESPECT FOR MY ARTICLES.

Whoops, leant on my Caps Lock. Happens to all us morons.

stupid ramires and fareira....

Posted by Chuma on 12/04/2010

United fan here. Dave, that was a very classy response to Steve. His disjointed post can't even seem to decide whether it's overachievement or underachievement! It's very clear who the real idiot/moron is.

come january mr roman must do something ,ifnot let chelsea source funds somewhere ? what is chelsea lucking ? we have all the material , my suggetion , the coach must try the small boys , it is now getting out hands ,next game with spur we must start Josh in the middle and Dany up front with either Nico , Florent and kalau . why should we play as if we are not the double winners , please my humble request for the squrd is kindly die a little for chelsea fc and the funnies .

SACK Ancelotti PLEASE!!!!! For the love mother!!!!! Bring back GUUS Hiddink!!!!! He is a real masterpiece while this MF Italian is just a joke!!!.... He's lucky @ AC Milan for having very very talented players like Kaka n Co.... Why the hell does someone still field Mikel when he is playing like Crap!!! Rameires is another loud mouth tiny player who claim to have the lungs of a horse but his action says otherwise!!!! Go n player in the "B" team Rameires!!!!!

Posted by Cam on 12/07/2010

haha nicely said David. Steve, did your mum forget to read your bedtime story last night? chill out man. that was a well written article that simply questions why we are currently playing the way we are. as when a team performs badly, questions arise. david has many valid points. i think the confidence from our achievements last season seems to have become an arrogance. our players seem to have adopted the view at the moment that we can just turn up to the field and win, its something that needs to be looked at. we just dont seem to have the same level of effort we had last season. that arrogance also seems to be rubbing off onto some of our supporters doesnt it stevie....

Posted by John Lyons on 12/07/2010

Some very interesting comments taken on board. I think we have lost the plot this season. The midfield is non existent and the defence has lost its way.

I do believe that the loss of Ray Wilkins has had a detrimental effect on the team and we let go of Ballack, Cole and Deco to soon.

I am not impressed with Ramires or Mikel because they don't look like they will ever score for Chelsea. They lack confidents when in the final third.

To be honest with you I don't know why we wasted money on Benayoun he is not a good fit for Chelsea and I see major problems ahead. I don't see us finishing in the top for this season and winning the Champions League is out of the question.

It looks like it is going to be a long hard season and I don't think we have strength in depth like Man U, Arsenal, Man City or Spurs this season.

The only hopeful point of note for us is the return of Frank Lampard.I am hopeful yet optimistic that the much needed return of Lampard can ignite our season.

Posted by Govind on 12/08/2010

Everybody at here talking about the problem but no body are talking about SOLUTION...

I HOPE this message will be read by Mr. Carlos Ancelotti.

In my point of view,
1. Chelsea should stop from playing 4-3-3 at all the match...For example At first have they should play 4-2-2 or 4-1-3-2 by playing more general attacking game and this also will make control the game. Once player all get tired for opponent team they should play 4-3-3 what currently they practise. Match such Manc, ManU, Tottenham they should play 4-3-3 but should play 4-5-1. in my point of view they have more attacking player than Chelsea..

2. Chelsea must buy players from German League such as Schwanstieger, Muller, Ribery. If can MUST buy Ronaldinho..he will make opponent confuse during attacking or go and watch game at Latin then choose player from Brazil,Argentina or Colombia league...Sure this will change chelsea squad. Better sell Mikel and give that position to Essien and some player at the squad...Sure WIN!

Posted by Michael on 12/09/2010

Look at the results BEFORE Ray Wilkins got fired and AFTER There is the solution to the current problems. It's as if the players are playing "Bad" in protest!!

Posted by Bluester on 12/13/2010

Overall there are quite a few problems at the moment:

1) self confidence. After a run of poor results, lack of self confidence is evident. This is a problem the coaching staff needs to work on. Also a couple of wins would do miracles on this problem.

2) lack of depth in the squad. When Terry, Lampard, Essien, Alex etc. are out, the replacements are just not good enough. It can be said that there´s been plenty of injuries. Still, if you are contesting for the premiership and champions league titles, you have to have better replacements than Paulo Ferreira or Daniel Sturridge. Those guys are no matchwinners.

3) poor luck. Balls don´t go in the net despite good efforts. This problem is related to problems number 1 and 2. Teams with self confidence and quality players eventually have enough luck to bag points.

Posted by trueblues on 12/29/2010

To my point of view,The match against ARSENAL,Mikel was not suppose to be substituted for Ramirez because Lampard wasnt that fit so instead of exchanging Mikel for Ramirez it should have been Lampard for Ramirez.Within how many minute Mikel was substituted the mid field was opened and the Arsenal mid fielders was able to dominate. Ancelloti should note this.

Not sure about over the hill'. Ballack was free tfrasner, so not too much stupidity in that, and Shevchenco might be alittle old, but there is no doubt he will be a 20 goals a season player, and that is exactly why they bought him.But after watching the community shield yesterday, I'm hoping Chelsea are ready for the start of the league next week.
