Not a lot of praise is being heaped on Chelsea after our win this weekend, and in all truthfulness it wasn’t an astonishing performance, but maybe it deserves more credit than has been dished out.

Most vitally is that we still have that 5-point lead on our closest challengers, with United and Arsenal both overcoming difficult tests.

United somewhat bizarrely, but not altogether unfairly (Gomez is to blame as much as the ref), and Arsenal even later than we did.

There are certain games where you wake up in the morning and in your heart-of-hearts aren’t wholly convinced that you will be coming home with all three in the bag.

For me on Saturday, Blackburn away was one of these games. I’m merely being pragmatic, we have only lost one game this season and there will no doubt be a bleak period – this is football, it happens.

At the moment though I’m sitting here wondering when.

Bar the blip against City and the draw against Villa we have won each and every game in a different fashion. Again showing our versatility in the league.

We have had the scraps, we have had the sublime and after Saturday we’ve had the scrapes.

This is why we are sitting at the top of the league. The only disturbing thing at the moment is that Man United seem to be building up a good amount of points with extremely uninspiring performances week in, week out.

It is only a matter of time until they have a spell where they are better, at which time they’ll have this cache of points they’ve eked out.

The same happened last season, United almost capitalising on our poor run during Christmas after a poor start to the season of their own. However they are a year older in many crucial positions and defensively pretty poor.

We have nothing to bemoan. We’re never going to play every game to our full potential, however much we all would like to see dazzling football every weekend, realistically it will never happen.

The game in the week against Spartak was today highlighted by The Times as crucial in the future of our season, and with good reason.

If we can win, and thus qualify, there will only be 2 remaining group stage matches as a formality followed by a gap in the competition until late February – making the Premier League the priority for around 3 months!

Liverpool on Sunday is going to be a massively tricky test.

Even though they are in terrible form, as I stated last week, it will be a massive fillip for their season to take all three points in front of a blood thirsty home crowd.

It would do Hodgson the world of good, something he will be well aware of. As well as Torres, who quite likes knocking the odd goal past us.

There is a lot of water under the bridge in this fixture, and the Chelsea players may well switch off against our recent foes seeing as they are not a challenge to the title.

Who knows what Chelsea will turn up on Sunday. Personally I’m all eyes on the game at Anfield, Wednesday against Spartak is a very unwelcome distraction!

Keep The Blue Flag Flying High!

In an interview in the beginning of the season. Our very own Florent Malouda said that Chelsea are on the next level. Believe it. This 'bleak' period you could say is the fact that we still haven't been bagging 6 goals per game for the past few games. It's over now baby.

this is the best team

Dear kyle,

Seriously mate.. thats the game all chelsea fans love to watch.. thrashing of liverpool..keep the blue flag flyin high... blues til we die..

I do agree with your comments on our performance over the weekend however I belive that Liverpool will not be as much of a challange as you expect it to be. Roy Hodgsen is under increasing pressure to keep his job and despite the two recnet wins, they were against somewhat easier opposition. Chelsea will be too strong in the end.

I think Chelsea were excellent at blackburn cus we brought back that never say die attitude like the Mourinho era....
I think its a step in the right direction.
Against Liverpool...
I don't think we would be complacent bcus the harder they play..The more we step up to the challenge.

i am surprised at the amount of people writing off Liverpool, this team is and will always be a thorn in Chelsea. they manage to raise their games against teams like Chelsea and Manu,it’s going to be a very tough game. Blackburn was not a good performance,we were lucky. This Sunday we can’t repeat such a performance we have to beat the kop and if possible by more than 3 goals to make a point.

KEEP THE BLUE FLAG FLYING HIGH…..BLUE BLOOD FOR LIFE!!!!!!!!

Hi there,

As we all saw, Carleto hopes for less injuries. We all do. My oppinion for the game against Spartak is that will be a warm up for the Liverpool clash. Some unexperienced lads are going to start along with the big guns. At the end I hope and believe that we will get the points, because Spartak won't have arguments on the bridge. For the game against Liverpool - this will be a massive game. But I'm quite sure that we are not going to lose this game. The Reds are slowly finding their form, but they still have difficulties. We won't forgive them for sure.
I wish less injuries and more optimism!!!

With the return of Frank in the midfield it frees up Essien to handle more of the defending midfield which in turn creates more attacking opportinities for Chelsea. As hard as Liverpool might play on Sunday player for player they do not match up and the speed for chelse is very impressive. When they decided to attack they have the ability to bring down anyone's house!

cheers!

The match at blackburn really had my heart in my mouth,it was a test i didnt see coming but was thrilled with our spirit;not playing at our best but still grinding out result,I see Liverpool being a lot easier...good as Zirchov as been attackingly he has somewhat left us alittle exposed defensively....i really look foward to seeing more of Josh.

Blues till i die...

I agree that it will be down to which chelsea side will appear in sundays clash against liverpool. I was nervous as hell with the rovers game last week, I think pulling a win against spartak midweek will give us the advantage on sunday, plus liverpool has napoli on thursday, which gives increased chances of Torres getting hurt, haha. It will be an interesting week. Well said this week David.

good article Dave. I'm a little anxious for the Anfield trip. We haven't been very convincing on the road this season yet. I just hope the blues take the game to the reds. I don't like the absorbing the pressure tactic that uncle Carlo has been using for the last 3 games. I hope he gets the boys to attack and suffocate the opposition every time they have the ball. Giving the other team practise crosses and too much time on the ball is a bad idea.

The Anfield game for such is a good testing game for our team. I think we can bit them with good concentration. If Lampard is fit enough for the game, he should play. Ramires needs to be quick, his slowness in game course us Man City game and he has made few other mistakes that would have course us. Mikel needs to step up his game too. His best game so far is against Asernal

I wish we could have played Liverpool a couple of weeks ago, before their last couple of wins. Confidence will be higher and desperation just a little bit lower.

Our last two games against Blackburn and Wolves could have looked very different if their chances had gone in. I'm almost as nervous about Sunday's game as I was on the 80 minute mark during Blackburn's.

Chelsea out to pile more woes to the poor Liverpool. Having said that though, this is a competition where you want to outwit your strongest rivals. My joy will be in seeing the Chelsea forwards tear their opponents apart in the most unsympathetic way. Go Chelsea go.
