There are plenty of excuses but one blatant truth. Chelsea just did not turn up.

So much can change in such a short space of time. Just over a week ago we were left reeling after losing to Liverpool, and on Sunday were left baffled by what can be deemed as the worst performance in the Ancelotti era.
Reading the statistics in the Sunday papers made the impending game seem one of ease and all signs were pointing towards a home victory.
Sunderland had failed to beat Chelsea in their last 11 games against us. One paper even had their chances of victory at 4% - especially as after 6 away games they had drawn 4 and lost 2.
Chelsea were yet to concede at home, and had a clean sweep of all 6 home league games in the bag.
Sunderland were all but written off by journalists and fans alike, I’m never a fond believer in historical data as it always seems to pop up and nip you in the bum, and nip hard it did.
The Black Cats deserve to have praise heaped upon them, they went to the home of the Champions and stifled them in all positions and didn’t sit back when they went 1-0 up as most teams would.
Steve Bruce is a great extoller of attacking football and he proved that on Sunday and also earlier in the season when they outplayed and outclassed Arsenal but only came away with one point.
Chelsea on the other hand can be thankful that they have injuries to fall back on. The lack of Lampard and Terry takes away the central hub of spirit in the team that they have instilled over the years.
The injury to Alex further weakened the solidity of the defence that a quality striker like Asamoah Gyan needs to keep him at bay.
The added suspension of Essien left our midfield once again looking as weak as they did a week earlier against Liverpool.
Mikel cannot be faulted for his determination in trying to work as the engine of the team. His lofted passes were frustrating as they failed to penetrate a Sunderland defence that would have been resolute had it been challenged. But at least he was trying to create something, which cannot be said of his midfield colleagues.
Zhirkov and Ramires did their best impressions of Audley Harrison by bringing zero physicality and zero fight to the centre of the park.
If only Zhirkov could’ve produced some output at the end of his mazy runs we could’ve made a fist of it, but his decision making inside the box proved to be poor on more than one occasion.
The defence can be also be classed as makeshift at best, as with the midfield.
This is where we lost the game. For the first time under the tutelage of Ancelotti we can actually pinpoint a decision that is questionable. The inclusion of Ferreira, an out and out right back, over the young centre back Bruma seemed bizarre.
It’s quite clearly a case of experience. But not in this case, what experience can Paulo offer at centre back? Less than Bruma for sure.
In a comment on my last post a commenter asked me what I thought the chances of the youth players starting are. I think Ancelotti gave his answer with that decision on Sunday.
Quite simply Bruma should have been drafted in, the gaps for the goals – and most of the chances – came from the central defenders being drawn to the ball and not to the players. It was too easy for Sunderland to break through.
In the case of the commenter asking whether McEachran should start ahead of Ramires, I don’t particularly agree.
In my heart I would love to see a youth product of 17 break through to a starting place. But in my head how can we discount a player who has experience in the form of double figured appearances for Brazil?
I’m not saying that Ramires is good at the moment, but also at this moment he is the safe option which is what we need – most of the time.
Bruma was the risky option, but it turned out that having a defence consisting of three right backs and a left back was actually even riskier. There were times that it looked like we had actually fielded our defence in that fashion.
At one point during the game I commented that we were playing as if we had 10 men. There was something really lacking on Sunday.
To win the league you need passion and determination. These are things that players like Lampard and Terry bring to the starting eleven. Whether it is their English style or just their playing style, we are going to struggle if we are missing both.
If rumours to be believed are that we will be without Terry for several months on the season, and now Alex is out for 8 weeks. There are going to be very tough times ahead, but Champions have to get out of these situations - injuries or not.
On to Birmingham away next week, a similar team in style to Sunderland but without as much quality in their play. It will be difficult, but hopefully the team have been given a short, sharp jolt to get back on track after a horrible week of football for us.
I’m not full of doom or gloom, I’m aware that football is a game where bad runs occur. The worrying thing is that this bad run may not be over.
A lot is being said of the fact that we haven’t got a big enough squad to cope with the challenges of the title. No team would cope without players we had out on Sunday - top quality Championship winning players.
Samir Nasri also piped up stating that we aren’t as much of a challenge as we were last season. Funny that we didn’t hear him say such things when they lost two of their home games to newly promoted teams – Newcastle and West Brom.
What most people are forgetting in the hoo-hah of Chelsea losing their first home league game since March, Sunderland are actually a good quality team – and unfortunately for us they deserved to win.
Let’s just hope that this is just a blip and it isn’t a full blown bubble burst sort of scenario. The scary thing is that we can’t be sure this is the case, although Chelsea have often proved that they can pick themselves up after a poor run but I'm not sure we've faced an injury crisis like this in a while. A problem symptomatic of having an older squad.
It isn’t worth worrying about just at this moment. We are still sitting ugly at the top of the league, fortunate enough that two digressions haven’t affect that position. If we can’t pick ourselves up soon though there may be more to worry about and ponder. January purchases inclusive.
Keep the Blue Flag Flying High!

True fans always support the club. In good or bad we have to remain positive. I warned before about the injuries and it occured to be right. So the only thing is to believe in our club. Now I have some other question. Is it right to purchase 17 milions and 20 milionds pound "stars" like Ramires and Zhirkov when you have youngsters who can do the same job. I mean Ramires and Zhirkov are not playing at their best and I don't know if Chelsea FC is the right club for them. The youngster will also do mistakes but they can improve and also they can become much better than these guys now.
I remain positive and hope we win against Bimingham next match. Every team faces a bad period, but if we are a true champions and if we want to remain champions we have to look forward and play at our best!!!
The game against Sunderland was a ballet.

David i totally agree with all you have to say but i would like to add just one point dont you think it would be wise to bolster the squad in January just in case? And another thing is don't you think to a certain extent the moral of team was dealt a blow with the departure of Ray Wilkins? I'm sure it too to a certain extent was a contributing factor to the negative Psyche of the players.

I strongly belive that without the loss of Terry and Lampard, we would've won the game easily. I had only barely learnt the news that Terry wasn't starting when Chelsea went a goal behind. This is going to be a difficult few months for us.

I'm very worried. 1. Why was Ray fired? 2. Chelsea has bought so many young players that haven't been given the playing time they need to develop. 3. Why Paulo @ centre back and Zirkhov at centre midfield? The manager needs to take a risk on his younger players. I'd fault him less if they didn't play well than him playing people in positions they are not suited for. Paulo is too short and not physical enough for a centre back! My advice? Play the younglings or sign new players!

Wow, when onouha does a messi like run and scores, you know your defence is not up to scratch. i can’t remember when last i saw Chelsea play that bad, but sunderland where better and deserved the win. In a way i am happy with the injuries, it’s time to build a new team. it might come at the expense of the title, but for how long are we going to manage the so called spine of the team, We should have done this 2 years ago. These players need to blend and blend fast or we might have very painful season.
KEEP THE BLUE FLAG FLYING HIGH!!!!!!!!!!

I am dispointed with the manager, because he is not building a team he already have a squard. The injury of JT an Alex he should be wise enough to bring in Bruma because he is a center back and let Ferrera sit on the bench changed the system in the midfield played 4-4-2 because he know without Lampard and Essien it will be hard to controll sunderland. He tried to do something that he know it will not work.I think chelsea should look into the market for a central diffender in january if not i cant see us winning the league.
I will also like to comment on our strikers let them play as a team and scored goals because they have been together for long now so at least in any game they should scored a goal.I hope and wish things work out good and we win the remainding games to defend the title and win the champions league this season

Without a doubt, we need to make purchases in January. Every club invests in players of interest, regardless if you hear of it or not, the only ones who'd get the media would be any purchase of 2million Perseus.
Bur Chelsea are in a slump and I'll tell you why.
We've lost a total of 5 players to injury. 4 Of them are from the midfield, the grounding and play making of the team. Now, when you loose your starting players who lets be honest, are the older, football minded players and you replace them with youngsters or players who do.not share the same chemistry as these players, you are without a doubt bound to reach dark days.
I suggest the blues find the best possible combination for now, train hard and invest in January. With 3 cups in contention, this is imperative.
Up the Chelsea blues.

I said it before. i had seen it swooping and does it surprise anyone that xmas is close when the league is won or lost.hear me blatantly, it d' get worse. imagine an injury to cech, who covers him, turnbull, hehehehehehhehehehhehehehehe (stops laughing and dies) imagine one to Drogba(not that he is ever malaria free these days anyway). why did Carlo not use malouda in midfield ahead of zhirkov? bruma, not paulo. why does chelsea refuse to sign a good goal keeper, a decent midfielder and a young striker?listen people, it could (no, will) get worse, let's just hang in there, believe and hope these heralding disaster beckons wholesome change. face it, there is every pointer to the need for chelsea to build a new team.just i don't know who it's going to be built around, kakuta, josh, mikel, kalou, i doubt.Too many questions, well, few, very few answers.lliorente, hulk, bruno alves, de gea, subotic, pastore, neymar, Albrighton, sign, sign, sign, sign oooooooooooooooooooooo (sobbing)

Why don't you think about bringing back Michael Mancienne from Wolves and Slobodan Raikovich from Vitesse. They both are on loan and available to fill the hole in defence.

Ancelotti is a good manager, his problem is that, when playing a team that usually load the middle of the pack with midfielders or that is playing four five one formation like liverpool even sunderland should expect nothing less than counter of the greatest order. however, a winning side never gives up.

What player causes the most breakdowns in a game.
The coaches must be blind if they don't see this.
Posted by KIM on 11/23/2010
We cant just start calling for Ancelotti's head just because we lost........ let us learn to be
Posted by Earle on 11/23/2010
i think this is the time to put our players in an gets some expereince like Mceachren and Bruma and speed up the transition stage from old squad to young squad. I rather see it done now than wait till we are at a bad postion in the league.

Formerly ancelotti was a good coach but now may be got a certain cover-up on his brain cause he is no longer analyzing and observing the future well.
what he should do is to go to the summer market and sign new players most especially one complete striker and at least two defenders.
otherwise will keep on driving
Posted by ben on 01/12/2011
you people should buy new players
