Chelsea

A crushing and convincing victory over Arsenal has secured our third-place spot in the Premier League. It was a good performance and helped the lads put Wednesday's disaster out of their minds. With the season practically over, its time to start looking to the future - with a new manager needed to claw back United's 12 point advantage for next year - but who takes over?

I think that every Chelsea fan will agree that Guus Hiddink offers the best option for the future. After this temporary stint in charge (in which he managed to get the players performing to their best once more after the Scolari debacle), Hiddink now knows the players, knows the club, and obviously has a brilliant relationship with the owner. It might be this relationship with the Russian Abramovich which halts him from joining Chelsea - with his allegiance to Russia possibly holding him to that role until South Africa 2010 (assuming the Russians qualify).

Hiddink has the respect of the players and media, and would be able to bring a hard-working ethic to the team, and some new fresh faces where he thinks they are needed. It should really be Frank Arnesen's job to bring in the fresh faces, but that's another story for another article!

Whilst everyone acknowledges that Carlo Ancelotti is a world-class manager, I have to say I'm not a fan. His Milan team have failed to produce the goods over the last few seasons, and his willingness to rely on their ageing players rather than blood new ones makes him the arch-nemesis of Arsene Wenger. With Favalli (37) and Maldini (40!) still regulars in the back-line, we can expect Carlo to make few changes to a squad which clearly needs rejuvenating. On the plus side, JT would be playing the the Bridge for years and years to come!

Frank Rijkaard has been mooted in the Press, but surely has too much history with Chelsea from barcelona's contests with us over the years. I for one would not like to see him at the Bridge, whilst the way his career finished at Barca does little to suggest that he would be able to cope with the stars and egos in teh dressing room. Ronaldinho, Deco and Eto'o were all playing their own games whilst Rijkaard failed to take control.

The sad thing is that its about here that we begin to run out of options. Marco van Basten did a reasonable job with Holland but failed to make Ajax gel, and ran out of ideas when they needed some creative tactical thinking. Luciano Spaletti probably won't be released by Roma (unless Roman pays top dollar) but even if he was, would we want a conservative Italian mastermind who has managed to steer Roma to 6th in Serie A? Admittedly on a budget, but still...

All of which leaves us with one hotly-tipped handsome, charismatic Portuguese candidate glaring us in the face.

Would he be able to come in again? Would the fans love him again? Would he be able to cope with the egos in the dressing room again? Would he be better equipped to tactically compete in the Prem? Would he be able to take a harder line with Abramovich and Arnesen if he came back a second time? Would he spend wisely, and attract top quality players? The answer to all of the above is yes. The question is not whether he could do the job, but whether Abramovich is willing to admit that he was wrong, and Jose should have kept his job in the first place.

i agree with you .but lets be realistic, i don't see morinho coming back to chelsea in the near future.our best bet is probably hiddink if he agrees to stay. But since he won't be staying, i think rijkaard should be the next option

Posted by smashkon on 05/11/2009

Though Jose is sorely missed I doubt he will leave Inter to come back, regardless of how Abramovich feels. He had such a great season with them I'm sure he'll be there for a while to come. If only we could just keep Guus...

Posted by Max on 05/11/2009

Honestly I think Carlo is a good choice because few people realise that he has had little to no money at Milan. When was the last time Milan forked out more than 10 million for a player? Milan are in serious debt and Ancelotti has done well. Rijkaard is woeful, let's not consider that option. I personally would like to see JM come back as much as the next guy but we all know he's going to spain, probably madrid. My vote is we poach Manuel Pellegrini, taking Villareal to where they are now from second division. He would be a long term plan. Or why not Martin O'Neill or David Moyes, two relatively young british managers that could last here for eras. We need to look around Jose Mourinho this time.

I am a new chelsea fan, been following them for about 7-8 yrs now, as here in India, EPL was not a big deal, till ESPN STAR Sports, started broadcasting the games live. Now even on my visits abroad, i make it a point to visit the bridge and absolutely adore the blues and like many fans was shattered when we crashed out of the CL, due to pathetic refereeing. I agree that Guus may be the best option available, even more than Jose, as he makes chelsea game more attractive.
How about Bilic?? he might struggle with Big Egos, but will be equally charismatic like the portuguese and of course more attractive brand of football??

I think no doubt the best coaches Chelsa have heard in recent times are Jose and Hiddink. If Guus could stay, he would been the best to handle both the club and the club owner in a more matured way. The clubowner has his own problems with his characteristic impatience. Roman should take a cue from the owners of Arsenal and guarantee the next coach some measure of security to enable them do their job. It is very difficult to know why Jose Mourihno had to leave after the laurels he won and the great team he assembled at Chelsea during his short stay. If we can convince the "special one" to come back and we can not continue the arrangement with Guus, lets look toward Italy for the next coach. Italian football tradition serves Chelsea well - a mixture of steel and style.

well,in my own humbly suggestion, following scolari's exist and Guus taking over, you see that our players did well till date.i prefer that Guus should be talked to stay at the bridge,we need him there next cos with him i think we will celebrate 4 to 5 trophies.
However,if he insists of leaving i think we need former Barcelona coach Riijkaard to continue from where Guss stopped, meanwhile Guus should be left out in the advisory team.
Squel to that,it will be the most wonderful thing to ask all the players who they like to coach them because i think that was the major problem when Scolari was there.
I don't think that they players so much love Scolari, pls i beg let us becareful with the issue of coach next season.
Thanks

well, in my own humbly suggestion , first of all guus stay at bridge he is great manager for chalsea if he will go than i think franck riijkaard is best for chalsea he strong and good manager and help to barcelona to win cl and leage 2006 . and guus is advisor of the manager.

I'VE BEEN a strong supporter for as long as i can remember.. wat i do knw is that chelsea is a well disciplined, tactically gifted team. Our players maybe aging on the wrong side of thirty but we have passion and unbelievable determination... so we need a coach that knws how to push us... and his name is HIDDINK....

Posted by solomon oti on 05/11/2009

men, let's stop making a mountain of ant-hill, to me jose and rijkaard are the best options but since there's every likelyhood that jose wouldn't fancy another degradable career with chelsea, then let's go for frankie, he's got the touch..........read me, from unijos, jos, nigeria.

Posted by Ogochukwu Dibiaezue on 05/11/2009

I agree with you that Jose Mourinho is the best option but i doubt if he'll leave Inter in such a fashion. So lets put a hold on JM for now.I believe we're all forgeting someone,Gianfranca Zola former Chelsea player and has been doing wonders with West Ham.I think he'll be a good replacement for Hiddink or what do you say?

Posted by Virtue on 05/11/2009

Guus Surely is the best option and i suspect following our controversial exit in the UCL, he`ll stay. He is an achiever and loves to achieve gr8 things. Let Abramovich and Peter Kenyon pres the right buttons and we might just have Hiddink. Rijkaard is good but can he comand the respect of all? Carlo`s football for me is not enterprising. Watch Ronaldinho and Kaka of late. Dot u c dwindling enterprising plays? I doubt Man City would want to splash out 100m again for him. Up Blues

I have been following Chelsea for sometime now and I urge the Chelsea Boardroom to go for AVRAM GRANT. The woes Chelsea is facing now was as a result of the Boardroom politics that kicked AVRAM GRANT out. I strongly know that if AVRAM was still around Chelsea would have done better this season.

He understands the players so well just like the SPECIAL ONE.

I rest my case. UP BLUES!!! THE SKY IS BLUE!!!

i'm a chelsea fan ,i'm realy sick of how often we chamnge our mangrs, players are forced to adopt to diff tactics and style of playin bt this prove us to be the best from the type of football our players r producing, considering our rival manu havin an all time coach and still we are contending,we need the right coach and guus is the one lets have a stay guus vote,i jus gave mine...ema b'lore

To be honest, I would love for Jose to return to the Bridge. I could definitely see our Blues dominate the Premier League once more. However, his lack of a proper relationship with Roman is what's going to keep him from returning to the Bridge. Roman has done a lot for CFC, but he needs to stop acting like he knows what is right for the club and leave that up to the managers. The club is not his fantasy football team. I would love to have "lucky Goose" continue his stint at the bridge, but lets face it - the man is stubborn on returning to Russia. True loyalty.
Personally, I'm not a fan of Ancelotti. He has failed to produce any silverware and he does not have the striking personality that top managers like Jose and Guus have. Our Blues have been playing like they did when "the special one" was running things at the Bridge - I only wish we had Guus at the beginning or better yet - we should have never let "the special one" leave.

Posted by Michael on 05/12/2009

It would be really great to see Guus holding the place at chelsea but "will he stay?" The special one who built the team is still much competent. But "will he want to come back to face the so called 'Abramovich factor'. Besides, i think Rijkaard will make our style of play more interesting as Guss his doing at the mo'

when mourinho was here there are some chelsea's fixtures i dont bother myself to watch,he has a way of winning, winning and winning...but when roman became too recalcitrant the special one had to leave and we are still paying for it today.I doubt if he will ever come back cos he's got a new project in internazional winning the scudetto for them on the pitch in his first season.....mou is the best in the world,i wish he could come back PLEASE.

Posted by Harold on 05/12/2009

In my view, Jose Mourinho is the right man for the job. If everything fails, the best would be to plead with Hiddick to stay. Abramovich should just humble himself and do the right thing in the best interest of the club by settling his differences with JM

Posted by Chelsea fan on 05/12/2009

I think the next manager should be from English background because of the language. Big Phil is a graet coach but the only problem with him is he can't speak English well. If Chelsea can bring someone who can communicate with the players, I think Everton coach is most suitable to that post. Also maybe Chelsea can attract back their legendary footballer who is now coaching West Ham. Zola is a legend to Chelsea and he also have experience after taking West Ham for a while. Go for him! Adios Masta...

Posted by Fadun Olakunle on 05/12/2009

I think for the first time Abramovich should think outside the box. Where are the great Coaches if the premier league? Someone like Redknapp i think would be a great choice. Scolari failed cos he had a totally different approach to the game and was too rigid to change consequently i thing Ancelotti too could suffer the same fate if given an opportunity with the blues ( only if he has the luxury of buying his own team).

As a Chelsea fan , i must say i'm tired of changing coaches like players change jerseys. A long term agreement when signed should be adhered to .This is the only way a management can get the best out of a manger(good or bad)

Posted by samson audu manpa'a on 05/12/2009

A difficult time for our Chelsea indeed after the "ovrebo" thing. I feel Rijkaard for now should Manage the club.

Posted by Somendra Chaudhary on 05/12/2009

I think, it is time now for Chelsea to look at life beyond JM. He might be capable of leading Chelsea to Premiership glory but Chelsea need someone who can win CL for them. JM proved that he is not capable of winning the CL in all his years at The Bridge and then with Inter. He might have won CL for Porto but remember........Greece also won the Euro

Posted by Yoz on 05/12/2009

The special one did not build the team that has went on to win the premier league back to back..

Claudio Ranieri did..

Posted by Blue Boy on 05/12/2009

The poisoned chalice of the back-to-back titles continues to manifest itself in our dire brand of football. Anyone who has watched the Blues for more than 4 years knows that Jose took a beautiful squad (thank you Mr Ranieri) and played results-driven football at all costs.
Our point-of-difference has always been our willingness for invention and excitement - characteristics sorely lacking now. It may sound blasphemous but I'd rather a coach willing to push forward than one who makes us look like all those other boring EPL teams. Even at the risk of the occasional loss.
You want Jose again?? You obviously don't want to watch our games, just check our winning margin (1 goal) every Monday and feel a bit better about yourself that you're a fan of a 'winning' team. Yawn.

Posted by Maran on 05/13/2009

For the current Chelsea team, it actually does not require a world class coach. The team consists of superstars attracted to the big money Roman had dangled. Today they are somehow assembled like a team and it is so after 2-3 years of playing together. Any coach with a little tactical sense can do that job. The challenge is to make this team great. That will take another 2-3 years, but this will be rendered impossible if the managers are changed at this rate. Great teams are not assembled overnight, they are built over the years. There is no short cut. Only fantasy managers will be able to do that for Chelsea.

Posted by Badluckchelsea on 05/13/2009

Seriously guys there is only one person now in a position to manage Chelsea and thats Abramovich himself!
What an idiot for getting rid of JM and for destroying the career of Shevchenko (at least he got paid for doing nothing) and then getting rid of every other manager he has had recently.
Its smart that Guus does not want the job. Who wants to manage a team who's owner will sack you mid season at the whim of a players because they could not win two or three games themselves.
Every manger has a different style but this team is built by JM so anyone coming in will not only have to deal with egos but the medling of an owner who should just do it himself!

Posted by Setutsi on 05/13/2009

I perfectly agree with you. JM should be brought back OR we convince Hiddink to stay.Roman was wrong and he should admit it.

Posted by PG on 05/13/2009

If no Hiddink, going back to Jose would just make chelsea a target for the media rubbishing. I would love to see Jose back, he should never have left. But I would like to see some younger blood. Klinsmann, Jol, It would be nice to see Gullit back but then again you need an experienced manager who would deal with all the BS and send some back from where it came from so then again it would be Jose. Look outside the square blues.

Posted by saeed on 05/13/2009

lets face facts...........chelsea players are like kids who need daily motivation and shouting in the dressing room to get the best out of them......so a father figure is necessary. who will it be I suggest harry redknap....cause everybody love an english manager so the media can have less complain about chelsea and their bias comments in every game Furthermore, the english manager can shut once they get a chance with the top teams and kerry Dixon can shut it once and for all about foreign managers...and this wil prove vital for the team. PERSONALLY MY FAVOURITE CANDIDATE IS.........SVEN ERICSSON.....the best in handling egos and knows how to beat the big4&the premier league tactician.....MR ABRAMOVICH SVEN IS OUR MAN&WILL STAND WITH HIM ON ALL MEDIA CIRCUS THE NORTHEN REPORTERS WILL THROW IN .

As much as it pains me to say this I think Roman and the Blues management needs to learn from Sir Alex and the red devils. As much as I despise them, one can not downplay their success. Sir Alex has been with the devils for over a decade and that is he has built a nearly unstoppable squad. Mind you, the red devils had their share of bad seasons, especially when our blues took the premier league title 2 years in a row. Roman needs to stop playing fantasy football and sign a manager and give him some time for god's sake. You can not expect to win everything in just one season. Our Blues can become an unstoppable force, but its going to take time - no matter who we sign as a manager. Also, let me remind you that we are not going to have access to Roman's treasure chest for much longer. The recession has hit him and hit him hard. I only hope he doesn't abandoned us any time in the near future.

The special one is a great coach one of the best in the world he made chelsea what they are 2day although i agree abramovich made a mistake 4 cutting him loose, and i feel if he wants to get back in the good books of the fans he should try and convince Guus to stay, cos he has come to understand the team now and best of all he has a matured way of handling situations with the players, the press and the boss unlike Jose who can be a wild card sometimes,i also believe Rijkaard is a good coach and can do some good in chelsea if only he can learn to control and create a good relationship with the players and i always loved louis van gal another good coach but apart from these people i dont chelsea could find a better coach to take them to glory.A blue for life.AIKE FROM NIGERIA

4 me i tink JM,is stil the best we got in chelsea,be that as it may,Hiddink is such a gr8 coach that every player love to work with,if the we can talk him to stay,i think that would b gr8,but in the absentes of that i think we shuld go 4 the best coach, and if the Special one can kome back,i think chelsea can get back to where they throughly belong. To the chelsea fans, lets just hope the best is yet to kome, lets try n put behind us wat the"orevbo"n lets look into the future.

Posted by Peter Parker on 05/14/2009

Mourinho is not coming back to manage Chelsea.Agreed Abramovich did a mistake in sacking him when the results weren't all that bad.But so did he with Ranieri and Grant.Abramovich is not a man to go back on his decisions whether or not it was a mistake.Otherwise why should be counting his millions for the golden handshakes given to Mourinho,Grant and Scolari?Besides Chelsea are vying for a larger fan base. Why should they bring a manager who irks the neutral fans with his style of play and his ego?
Also Hiddink is going to honour his contract with the Russian FA.So pleading with him to stay on will not work.So both Mourinho and Hiddink options gone. Now Chelsea need a manager who 1)will be able to work with players who are on the wrong side of 30.2)should have won prestigious tournaments either as player or coach.3)has a proven track record of managing star players with possible ego clashes.Rijkaard failed in 3,Grant in 2,Basten/Klinsmann not for 1.Probably Ancelotti comes closest.

i think dat Mourinho was a great coach 4 chelsea and d premier league. His hallmarks were hardwork, meticulous preparation and great teamwork.
likewise d team dat he assembled was built on these qualities,i would like 2 see a chelsea coach who sets up his teams in dat fashion
Gus did dat, remember south korea, australia, lets face it we do nt have d Kaka's or robinhos 2 win games consistently based on flair or 'individual magic'
2 succed wit d players we have,we shuld b looking at d likes of Moyes nt Rijkard.
as 4 Ancheloti pls lets nt go back 2 a coach who will b spending half his time learning english and d other half speaking wit head and hand gestures(no offence BIG PHIL)
If hiddink cant stay,we need 2 get a coach dat fits d players,nt jst any big name out of work or about 2 be fired

As a true Chelsea fan, I prefer Hinndick to stay at chelsea at least for 10years, because I truly know that unstable managment has cause a whole lot in Chelsea for a while, as the saying goes "Too many cooks, spoils the brought", An evidence is clearly those clubs that keeps long lasting managers. Nigerian footbal fans Loves Chelsea and we want all the throphies next season. Ezy

Good way to end the home campaign. I enjoyed that our fans were Guus his appropriate adulations. However, it now seems like Ancelotti will be the one to fill the spot, which I must say I'm not to excited about. The club needs to look at what the players want and the fans want. By the looks of it Ancelotti does not seem like a popular choice amongst the fans or the players. I really hope we don't bring it Ancelotti. I only see him getting sacked midway through the season.

Convince Gus to stay, or bring in someone who fills his shoe until he is done with Russia, even of they qualify, 2010-11 season we will have him back, it means we will have to figure out a replacment for him for one season.
