Celtic FC

Before this week's International break,Celtic had two massive matches, one against Rapid Vienna in the Europa League and one in the SPL against their oldest rivals Rangers and both left the Celtic supporters and manager which much to talk about.

After all the build up and 25 years later the stoked up hatred in the Press, the rematch was eventually here and Celtic's worse nightmare had come back to haunt their old foes from Glasgow once again, although they did have a helping hand from Celtic captain Stephen McManus as he badly miss judged a pass to let Rapid's Jelavic in to opening the scoring and send the travelling support wild with delight so much so that they spilled on to the track and for a time it did look like there was going to be another incident but it was calmed down quickly and it was just the actions from the home fans who let their captain and the rest of the defence know just what they thought of them.

Celtic needed a shake especially after going behind after only 3 minutes and although they did have chances, they seemed to be letting them pass them by as they wasted chance after chance but the did draw level through Scott McDonald who brought his side level with a well taken goal but try as they might, they could not get the winner and the chance was lost.

With two games against Hamburg coming up,Celts chances look slim but you can never write them off.

After the European draw, came the visit to Ibrox for the first meeting of the Old Firm this season and with both sides going into the match missing key players,it would be interesting to see who would cope the better.

Tony Mowbray had sprung a surprise with new signing Zheng Zhi given his first taste of action in an Old Firm match and indeed in a Celtic jersey.Fans coming into Ibrox would be talking about the number of changes on both sides as Celtic had to do without both full backs but the player wearing the number 27 had most Celtic fans talking and he could be pleased by his performance-not much coud be said about the rest!

The soft centre that had many Celtic fans wondering if it would ever be toughened up for this visit to Ibrox was again called into question again!

Celtic had an early chance in the match when Maloney shot straight at McGregor after a slip by Little but they were hit by a sucker blow when after only 8 minutes Boyd split the Celtic defence and it was left to half-fit Kenny Miller to slip the ball past Artur Boruc to give the home side an early advantage and send the Ibrox home support wild as Celtic's back line had been caught cold.

To be fair this early blow did not seem to effect Celtic as the quickly went on the attack and were denied what looked to have been a penalty when Weir caught Maloney in the box but Craig Thomson waved play on! And soon after the same two players tangled again and this time Maloney was shown the yellow card for diving, again it did look like the Rangers defender did touch the Celtic attacker!

If Celtic felt hard done to there, then what happened at the other end had to be seen to be believed as the soft centres again handed Rangers a goal on a plate when Loovens misjudged a long ball from McGregor-it must have had extra power in it? and then the Hulk like Kenny Miller shrugged off Loovens to slot the ball home despite Boruc getting a hand to it.

2-0 down inside 15 minutes at Ibrox, did not look good for Celtic against a team who had been battered in mid-week-ok it was Tuesday-by Seville and who could not score v Motherwell,Kilmarnock or Aberdeen!

From here on in things could only get better!

After 25 minutes it did! Celtic were eventually awarded a penalty-third time lucky-as Zheng Zhi had been fouled in the box by Papac,Aiden McGeady took it and just got it beyond McGregor as the Rangers keeper got a hand to it but just could not keep it out.

Despite Celtic's better possession in the second half and 4th penalty claim of the day after McDonald and Whittaker had clashed in the box but again no penalty!

Both teams had chances towards the end of the match with Maloney missing from close range and Novo had a lob blocked by Boruc and Rangers just seen the match through to the full time whistle.

First blood in the Old Firm match goes to the Champions Rangers but many questions have already been asked of Celtic and their all too weak defence.

No matter the fact that they were one point ahead at the top of the league, this defence has just not been good enough, the support know it,the manager knows it and the players too if they are honest know it!

So what can be done about it?
I put it to the world wide support of Celtic Football Club, what is the answer?
Do you think that Caldwell,McManus and Loovens or the new chocolate being sold at Celtic Park named after these three,The Soft Centres, should continue playing for the club after their recent performances or should Tony Mowbray bring in Josh Thompson and Milan Misun or two other reserve players for the match v Motherwell?

It may be a bold, brave or stupid move but something must be done!

Once the defence is sorted then the mid-field and attack could also be sorted in the same way.
Too many players are not earning the right to wear the shirt, taking it for granted that they will be first pick because they are the captain,an International players or have scored a few goals and pointed to the club badge!

I may be being harsh on the players but after last season,I do not want the league to be handed to Rangers on a plate without a fight!

The manager is trying to play his brand of football but he does not have the players in every position to do that!

Things must change at Celtic and quickly! Everyone at the club must ask themselves are they doing their best or could they do more?

Things must improve, people are turning their backs on their players and on the club as cash is more precious now than ever before, fans want to see entertainment and if they are not being entertained at Celtic Park or see that the board will not back the manager in January, then they will not be back,it is as simple as that!

Two men that the Celtic support will want to wish well are big John Hartson who has fought his way back from cancer to get back to his writing duties-good on you John and God Bless you and keep giving you strength,we hope to see you get better and better as each day goes on.

Also Chris Sutton who has just ventured into management with Lincoln City and the Red Imps won their first match under their new boss 1-0,lets hope that this is a sign of things to come!

Although McManus and Loovensl were very poor, the main reason Celtic lost was the referee. Celtic had three strong penalty claims, all of which were denied, with two resulting in the fouled player being booked. Weir, Lafferty and Novo all committed deliberate career-threatening fouls with barely a word from the referee, and Novo also tried to score with his hand, but was not booked. All these incidents have been complied on video (have a look on you tube). This is a must see for any football fan, as it unequivocally illustrates the depths to which referees in Scotland are prepared to stoop to help Rangers.
