After beating Macedonia 2-0 at the weekend with a good second half performance,Scotland now face their most toughest task in the group on Wednesday as they face run away group leaders Holland at Hampden in a vital clash that could send us on the road to the Play-Off's and get the angry mob in the press off manager George Burley's back!
Scotland will go into the match as underdogs there is no doubt about that but I remember being at Hampden on some really magicial days and nights when England were beaten(1-0 Richard Gough),Spain were beaten (3-1 Johnston 2,Dalglish), France were beaten both home and away 1-0,Caldwell and McFadden) and of course Holland were beaten(1-0 McFadden),special matches, special goals, special players and special fans, tomorrow as a special Dutch side walk on to the Hampden turf,Scotland must give one last special performance for the capacity crowd who will roar louder than before as every kick of the ball is kicked across the hallowed Hampden turf for the 90 minutes and more.
Everyone knows that the Dutch have a side that is full of class, craft and quality but if the Scotland team that takes to the pitch stands and admires their opponents then we may as well not bother turning up tomorrow but everyone knows this will not be the case!
Scotland will hopefully hastle and chase every ball, hopefully knocking the Dutch off their free flowing passing game that they are famous for-they will bring Total Football but what the Scots will need is total committment! Stranger things have happened when the Scots have been written off before, let's hope that come Thursday morning we are all waking up saying,"Did Gary Caldwell really score the winner v the Dutch?" instead of well we all knew they would win anyway they are a class side! We live in hope!
Also on Wednesday,Celtic will travel to play Cork City but what kind of side the Hoops will take to play over in Ireland remains to be seen as most of the first team players will be either on international duty or injured!
Recently new signing Marc Antoine Fortune has suffered a blow after his recent knee injury,it has now been confirmed that the striker will be out for several weeks missing Celtic's Europa League clash with Hapoel Tel-Aviv and possibly the first Old Firm match of the season.
Also on the injury list is keeper Artur Boruc who took a knock playing in the 1-1 draw for his country Poland v Northern Ireland and also Aiden McGeady who picked up a knock playing for the Republic but the winger would have been suspended for this Saturday v Dundee United anyway.
Better news for Tony Mowbray was the performance of Stephen McManus on Saturday for Scotland after not kicking a ball for Celtic so far this season and also the performance of Scott Brown who had a fantastic match and opened the scoring with his first international goal for his country,I'll take another like that on Wednesday from Scott or anyone!
Welcome to Scotland to anyone who has travelled from Holland for the match,I hope you enjoy the game but leave with no points, come on you have won the group anyway!!
Another thing,Glenn Loovens will tell you it always rains here!!!!
