Celtic FC

Celtic's Champions League dream died at the Emirates tonight and although over the two legs the English side deserved their win,Celtic will feel that it was their failure to win the SPL that has cost them a place in the Champions League proper!

Losing 2-0 at Celtic Park then 3-1 at the Emirates tonight has shown the gulf in class between the two sides and after cheating their way to the first goal, the Gunners actually scored two great goals from Eboue and Arshavin before Donati grabbed a late goal for Celtic.

Celtic now have to look forward to Europa League football after crashing out of the Champions League at the qualifying stage after two defeats to English giants Arsenal, the latest being a 3-1 defeat at the Emirates tonight.

The defeats may not come as such a surprise to anyone who has watched Arsenal play in the last few English Premiership as the have swept 10 goals in two matches and only conceeded two goals.

What will get the Celtic supporters backs up is not the bad luck in the first leg at Celtic Park with the deflected goal and own goal,it maybe the fact that Eduardo though himself to the ground when challenged by Artur Boruc,I use the word challenge in the very, very loose sense as the Arsenal forward should take a good look at himself for conning the referee into the award of the penalty which in theory gave Celtic no chance of doing anything in the tie.

Arsenal certainly did not need a helping hand from the referee as they are a classy outfit and they most certainly don't need to cheat or get a helping hand from the officials!

After getting the monkey off their backs with the away win in Moscow, many fans and players hoped that Celtic would get an easier ride in the qualifier but this was not the case as they were handed one of the ties that no one would have wanted in Arsenal!

The Gunners as I say apart from the Eduardo dive are a class act and it is no disgrace going out of the Champions League to a side like this but what will get the Celtic supporters backs up will be the failure to buy in January, when every Celtic supporter was crying out for strength in depth in this squad and it may have landed them a fourth championship,it was not fourth coming!

The decision not to bring in quality to add to the squad has cost Celtic, possibly millions!
Tony Mowbray has had to come in and try and rebuild this squad and prepare to challenge Rangers in the title race but even he must see that some of the players in that Celtic dressing room are simply just not good enough to wear the Hoops!

The transfer window has not long before it shuts as quickly as Celtic's Champions League quest and the manager will have to ship out the players that do not fit the bill in his Celtic team and hopefully get new ones in.

Rumours have surrounded Stephen McManus already with Ipswich looking to secue his service and other players may play their last game for the club on Sunday against Hibs before the transfer window closes.

Celtic do have class in Boruc and McGeady but now others need to bring something to the table or these players may not be at Celtic Park for too long!

For now,the Champions League dream is over and all eyes and ears will turn to the Europa League draw on Friday.

One thing the Celtic players can be proud of as always is the fantastic backing they received from the travelling support who not only out sung the home support but they showed supporters in London how to behave when watching a game of football!
