Bolton Wanderers

While I'm watching another dismal England friendly, I can't help but think back to Bolton's high watermark from the last two years, because it was almost exactly two years ago that Gary Megson led Bolton into Munich and escaped with a 2-2 draw.

This team is shredding my nerves. Just last week, I was feeling pretty good despite consecutive 4-0 maulings at the hands of Chelsea, because hidden in the wreckage was a solid 45 minutes. Unfortunately all that has evaporated with this capitulation. It was a spineless performance.

For some reason, suffering back-to-back 4-0 defeats in the same week doesn't feel like a total disaster. Maybe it's because the first result was in the preposterously popular Carling Cup, where Big Clubs are trying to win the thing. Maybe it's because Chelsea have been by far the best team Bolton have played this season, better than Man Utd, Liverpool and Spurs. Personally, I think it's because sandwiched in between eight unanswered goals, there was 45 minutes where Bolton matched Chelsea.
