Compared with some other Premier League managers, Gary Megson is often incredibly difficult to track down. If you're sifting through the silt and sludge of opinion and pseudo-facts on the Internet, apart from comments at pre- and post-match new conferences, it's very tough to find anything Gary has actually said.
That's understandable, because ever since he came to the club, Gary has been under intense scrutiny. I won't go into his spotty CV now, so let's just say he has failed to endear himself to the fanbase. Anyone would be reluctant to go on the record when they know that a good portion of their supporters don't think that they are up to the job.
If you've seen Megson at one of these news conferences, his body language is telling. He leans back in his chair, away from the reporters when he's deflecting questions. He leans forward and hunches over his desk when defending himself or his players. All the time he has his arms crossed. When he's on MotD directly after a match, he's usually adopts the 'double teapot', hands on hips, eyes down.
It comes across as defensive and reluctant, but this is a man who has been under fire ever since he took the job two years ago. It's incredibly rare for him to speak out in between games, mainly because he doesn't want to give his detractors any fresh ammo.
Today though, with less than a week left of the Transfer Window, this report appeared on the BBC Sport website. Not only is it the first bit of news from Megson's own mouth with some specifics, (I didn't need him to tell me Bolton needed "one or two strikers"), but it is the first time since he took the job that ultra-defensive Megson has admitted that he might have made a mistake.
Whether it comes off or not is almost incidental. It is nice to think that he's looking for quality players, but if Bolton do have needs, it's not in central midfield. I'm more encouraged be the sense of anxiety in his comments. He should be anxious.
Megson loves to point out that "when I arrived, this club was in the bottom three," (conveniently ignoring the fact the club had just finished 7th the year before, qualifying for the UEFA Cup). If, on the October 25th, Gary's been in charge for two years and the club is still in the relegation zone, all the criticisms of his team will still be there, and there will be a new one for him specifically: the club has made zero progress in the two years you have been in charge.
