Birmingham boss Alex McLeish has revealed Alexander Hleb felt embarrassed by his omission for the victory over Chelsea.

Former Arsenal midfielder Hleb, on loan from Barcelona, has struggled to make an impact at Birmingham so far as he has yet to reach full fitness, and he was dropped for the recent 1-0 victory against the Blues.

Blues and Villa played out a dull draw in the first Second City derby of the season, but if the national media had their way, you wouldn't have known that the two sides had even played each other. It was akin to the media blackout you'd expect in a foreign land, as every major national sport outlet refused to cover the event...maybe because it was too "small" for them.

Something that most definitely isn't "small" is the draw for the Carling Cup Quarter-Final, which has pitted Blues against their biggest rivals. At home. Under floodlights. Simply awesome.

However, a week is a long time in football, and now we stand facing the prospect of Blues falling into the relegation zone, after two terrible performances in a row. Where do we go from here?

Football has played a massive part in my life since I was just a child, and the World Cup in '98 turned me into a footballaholic; my very first love was the beautiful game. My aim for the future is to become a sports journalist and in little over a year, I can say that I feel extremely privileged to have received the opportunities that have come my way. Apart from ESPN Soccernet, I also write for the official Birmingham City Football Club Matchday Magazine, Made in Brum, which is an unofficial Blues magazine, and www.joysandsorrows.co.uk (using the tagname akvbcfc).
