What happens when you get the top two defenses in Europe together to play a little Cup match? 120 minutes of hard-nosed football and a penalty shoot-out. FC Bayern Muenchen finally overcame Borussia Moenchengladbach, sending the Foals out on penalties 4-2, and claiming their berth in the DFB Pokal final against the other Borussia - Dortmund, that is - in Berlin on May 12th.

After being beaten by 'Gladbach in August, and again in January, it was imperative that die Roten won this match; not only to keep the treble dream alive, but to prove once and for all, that they had truly turned the corner. Not only did they emerge victorious against their bogey team, but also overcame several very highly questionable offsides calls by referee Thorsten Kinhoefer's crew, as well as not losing their composure when the early goal wasn't scored. And while Bayern neglected to hang six or seven goals on BMG (you didn't really think they would, did you?), there remained that underlying sense of team unity, the very thing that was missing before they started this stellar run.

Moenchengladbach's keeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen was having another game of his life against Bayern Munich - saving Mario Gomez twice, Arjen Robben twice and David Alaba. But, on the other side of the pitch Manuel Neuer was a boss; finally overcoming his two crucial mistakes in two prior outings against this same side. His saves against Marcos Reus had me screaming as loudly as I would for any goal (indeed, singing "Who the f__k is Marcos Reus?"), and the penalty save against Nordveit to end the match had me, and the rest of the Bayern community, hopping around in glee. The team rightfully rushed Neuer as poor Marcos bowed his head and cried.

Possible future Bayern signing Dante did well to deny Thomas Mueller and Mario Gomez almost everything in the box, while shades of Lothar Matthaeus came to haunt him as he skyed his penalty shot. Bavarian central defenders Holger Badstuber and Jerome Boateng dealt very well with the opposition when Bayern had to open up to go forward.

Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery, in double coverage for nearly the whole match, still got up to their usual tricks. Robben still managed to get nine shots off, while Ribery's stellar chance to go one-on-one with ter Stegen was wrongly called offsides.

Toni Kroos' adequate match would have been amazing had he scored his opening screamer that struck the post. And Gustavo got lucky with a few unfortunate tackles that could have seen him off the field. I have an idea that Jupp deliberately placed him as the enforcer, however, so I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt.

And, what do I say about poor Nils Petersen? You've got to feel for the guy. He never gets a chance to play, and the one time he does, he slips in the box with a wide open shot on goal. Would he have made it? Perhaps. But, we'll never know. It stands to reason, with Ivica Olic leaving, that we need a quality back-up in the striker position for next season, unless Jupp Heynckes wants to start giving Nils a little playing time.

All-in-all, it was a highly frustrating, yet enjoyable 120 minutes of football. A ton of credit goes to Lucien Favre and his team. They play a very organized, disciplined game and it will be a pleasure to watch them in Europe next season. But for now, an exhausted Bayern Munich faces Hannover 96 on Saturday, keeping pace with equally tired Dortmund, who gets a visit from lowly Koeln. The battle for the Bundesliga is on!

Auf gehts, Bayern!

I had visions of Bayern getting bitten in the ass for not scoring early (again), and it was quite a frustrating (but, ultimately satisfying) game to watch. How different would the game have been if Kroos had actually scored (he hit the post, not the crossbar, by the way).

I have to give props to Jantschke, he played an admirable game against Ribery. Also, I wouldn't be surprised if ter Stegen, the way he's been playing this season, ends up getting called up for the national team in the near future, either on a temporary basis (I think Wiese is hurt), or to become one of the backups for Neuer.

Grudnik---

Oops. Corrected. Sometimes I get a little ahead of myself. :)

If Kroos had scored the opener, chances are we may have hung a couple more on them. But, whatevs. We still came out winner, right?

Ter Stegen certainly does deserve a call-up after such a stellar season.

The penalty shootout was glorious, although I was halfway in cardiac arrest while it went down. I wish Nils could have kept his feet and scored the winner though. He hasn't had many chances this season.

Posted by Susie on 03/23/2012

Johann-

Did you see where Mario said his bootie was shakin', cos he couldn't be involved in the shootout?

Posted by DB on 03/23/2012

I pretty sure NIls is gonna leave next season also. So with Olic and Nils gone, the need for a quality back up is very much needed.

Posted by Ruud on 03/23/2012

Hey Susie,

I don't want to comment on the game - i almost had a heart attack, nervous moments indeed - i'm just glad we won it.

Nils has quality by the way, but third backup striker quality at most, at least for now. I believe the ideal situation would be to loan him out to get some fair amount of playing time and show his true ability... Meanwhile, we should start looking for another backup striker *Cough* Giroud *Cough*. And please don't tell me Berbatov is the one!

Do you think Robben will sign the extension? or did Shaqiri's signing cast doubts on his future with Die Roten (from his perspective)? Because i think his relationship with Herr Jupp has improved over the past couple of weeks.

Thanks for the great blog!

Auf Gehts!

I hope Petersen stays. I believe he has the quality to do the business in front of goal, but a player of his age needs to find first team football. He may end up another of the many players that have been surplus to requirements at Bayern. The list is endless.

I've heard talks about bringing in Pizaro next year? Would be interesting. Lots of young guys on the radar next year, too. Bayern still in for all 3 titles so the season is going strong. It's amazing what a few weeks can do for a club.

The win against Hannover today, may turn out to be one of the most important of the season, if Bayern wind up winning the Bundesliga. I was worried because this game was wedged between the Pokal Halbfinale and the Champions League quarterfinal.
Did anybody else catch that Marseille postponed their Ligue 1 game this week to prepare for the Bayern game? Lyon did the same thing two years ago. UEFA should step in and not allow this in the future. We Germans have a fine word for this; Wettbewerbsverzerrung (trying saying that fast three times in a row.) Thanks for the great blog Susie. Auf Gehts Bayern!

considering how little rest our stars have had in the past month or so, i'm very impressed with the results. the team is looking really good, and the sooner schweini gets back into the starting 11, the better--we'll need him for the title and cl run-in.

i'm heading down to marseille (from my home in paris) to see the match on wednesday at the velodrome.... very excited to see the reds take down the blues! mia sin mia!

Nice write up again as always. Even though I'm not a fan of Bayern Munich, I find myself cheking the ESPN Blogs everyday to see if u have written a new story. My favourite in recent times was the one titled "Sniff". I really wish you were the one writing for my team. I'm not going to mention the team here for obvious reasons but hey Susie, kudos and more grease to your elbow!
I'm not gonna say auf gehts though...

Bayern may be having a smooth ride at a moment but i think there is a hiden problem which is already surfacing now.
we lack depth and it calls for concern.
Bayern could have sealed a win within the regulation time agaisnt B.Mongalbach, but our sub are as worst as the tired players removed,we need sub that will be as good,if not better than the substituted players.
as we progresses in all competitions the competitions get tougher and energy on the other hand get diminishing.
we cannot continue to rely on our Winning eleven because of a game like that of Monglabach(120mins)
which we may still face in UCL or even the final of the CUP GAME
We really need to invest more on top quality players for GOMEZ's back up and another for Shweini(EDIN DZEKO and ARTURO VIDAL would not be a bad option i suggest?)
Robben is likely to leave,i wouldn't mind if he can stay a year or two more but if he is not,let him give us the CHAMPIONS LEAGUE this year.
Bayern will rule at the END
Mia san mia

Hey Susie :) You need to post more frequently and not only after a good result. I know it´s a fans point of view. But fans also talk about the things that din´t went well. Or just say it like this. "You only post when your winning" ;)

Posted by Susie on 03/26/2012

Rollo---

I post as frequently as my life allows me to. Unfortunately, this is an unpaid position, which means I'm stuck paying the bills the regular way--- with a real job and all that. :)

But, when there's only a couple days rest in between matches, I generally write a review / preview. In fact, it's being worked on now. Thanks for reading.

Latibaba---

Of course the depth has been a cause for concern. And will remain that way for the rest of the season... But, we'll have to make do.

I don't think Robben is going anywhere; especially if we make the semis in CL competition. I also tend to disregard most rumors, because we're always linked with EVERYONE.

Tom---

The FFF pulled this same stunt a couple of years ago with OL against us. Whsile I find it distasteful in the extreme, I still think we come out on the right side of things here. So, I wouldn't be too worried.

Posted by Susie on 03/26/2012

DB and Ruud---

Nils is likely to go away on loan next season. That's great with me; he needs the match time. Give the guy a couple of years in the BL and he won't be slipping up.

Giroud is an interesting prospect. :)

Posted by Susie on 03/26/2012

Luciano---

That might be the nicest compliment I could recieve! Thanks so much. And yeah, you can tell us... Who do you support? ;)

Jacob---

Ahhhhh! I'm jealous! Enjoy the match!

We just signed Bastian's brother Tobias to the reserve team! I couldn't be more happy because:

1. Obviously, reunion time in Munich!
2. He's a striker, which is something we're in desperate need of.
3. He's the leading goalscorer of the third division, so he knows how to find the back of the net.
4. Just think! If we loan Petersen out to a strong club willing to give him first team football, it will free up the reigns for Tobias to make a name for himself as a backup to Gomez.
Since Olic is probably leaving and Petersen could be loaned, we need a backup striker. I think give Tobias until next season, he could be the leading goalscorer for the reserve team and he could become essential as backup to Gomez. It would also mean we wouldn't have to blow the bank for a contract for Giroud when Petersen comes back in a year or so to be a third stringer...
5. He just signed a contract, he's experienced, and happy to play on the same team as Bastian.

Posted by BayernGator on 03/26/2012

Wasnt petersen the leading scorer of the second division last year?

Posted by BrklynBayern on 03/27/2012

@BayernGator: yes, you are correct.
@01: relax dude, Tobias is like 30 yrs old. A year in our reserves is not going to get him into the BL1, especially for Bayern. He missed that boat 15 yrs ago.

It was a very nice gesture from management. He's competent, and our reserves need some serious help. He will probably go into youth coaching in a couple of years.

For a striker, I still want Lewondowksi

Posted by grudnik on 03/28/2012

Yes, the signing of Tobias is a nice gesture, and probably not a bad move for the reserve team.

But, there's a reason Tobias has been in the 3rd division his entire career. Unfortunately for him, his younger brother is far more talented.
