Bayern Munich reached in and dug deep to beat Hannover 96 2-1 in Bundesliga action on Saturday, after an exhausting mid-week cup clash against 'Gladbach. And after winning five matches straight in all competitions, die Roten returns to Champions League action on Wednesday against Olympique de Marseille, traveling to the Stade Velodrome for the first tie in the quarter-finals.

What happens when you get the top two defenses in Europe together to play a little Cup match? 120 minutes of hard-nosed football and a penalty shoot-out. FC Bayern Muenchen finally overcame Borussia Moenchengladbach, sending the Foals out on penalties 4-2, and claiming their berth in the DFB Pokal final against the other Borussia - Dortmund, that is - in Berlin on May 12th.

There are two underlying bogeys to Bayern Munich's season thus far: 1) The inability to win away from the Allianz Arena. 2) Borussia Moenchengladbach. We've somewhat setttled the first with the demolishing of Hertha Berlin 6-0 at the Olympiastadion on Saturday. That masterful, playful display (Rock, Paper, Scissors anyone?) was our first win away from home since December.

"Quite clearly, it's an unusual result [Bayern 7-1 Hoffenheim]. But the margin of victory does not impress me. I have absolutely no fear that Bayern will score seven goals in one game [against us]." - Heiko Vogel
This is the kind of match I cry about. See, I don't cry when we lose. When we lose, I just say, "OK, time to get some drinks." The perfect example being the Champions League Final in 2010. Me and the 30-some-odd Germans that were hanging out together in Madrid only made it about half-a-block from the Estadio Bernabeau when we found a tapas bar, full of Inter supporters, and took it over. We were having so much fun that a middle-aged Spanish man walked up to me in wonder and said, in broken English, "It's... it's... like you won... it...everything."

My, oh my! Saturday's (mis)match against Hoffenheim was exactly what Bayern Munich needed... In fact, what we all needed, wasn't it? Writing about a team that fails to perform, week-in and week-out, grows tiring. I would rather use words like "perfection", "destruction" and "butt-whipping" than "apathetic", "craptastic" and "implosion".

The last time Bayern Munich met up with TSG Hoffenheim the match ended in a scoreless draw- and ended our run of absolutely crushing everything that came our way. The tedium of that 90 minutes was only alleviated by two Bayern supporters being ejected for having intercourse in the stands. But, hey! At least somebody scored...
