FC Bayern Munich

...ist vor dem Spiel. Translated in to English it means: After the match is before the match. And, never has this been more true for Bayern Munich. We are starting a run of nine games in five weeks including the Champions League tie with FC Basel and a DFB Pokal semi-final match at Moenchengladbach.

2/18 at Freiburg
2/22 at Basel
2/26 vs. Schalke 04
3/3 at Leverkusen
3/10 vs. Hoffenheim
3/13 vs. Basel
3/17 at Hertha Berlin
3/21 at Moenchengladbach
3/24 vs. Hannover 96

While nothing is a walk in the park, it's nice to start this rough stretch against a team that we should take three points from. Perhaps all we can ask for is to increase our goal differential over Borrusia Dortmund, although that seems unlikely as they're matching up against Hertha Berlin.

It was an easy 2-0 win over Kaiserslautern last weekend, seeing Thomas Mueller (finally!) scoring a goal. Ahhhhh... It's been a long time coming, Thomas. And we all hope for many more in your future.

The only other thing I think worth mentioning about the match against die Roten Teufel (again, not my nickname) is: Arjen. Robben. Really. Wants. To. Start. And he made a case for himself during the second half of this match, as only he could really be bothered with trying to advance the scoreline. Well, he and Urkel... I mean, Jerome Boateng.

There's been a lot of questioning about my stating Xherdan Shaqiri being loaned out when he joins Bayern Munich in the summer. So, let me explain: I only say that because die Roten will be offering Arjen Robben a contract extension. Whether you or I agree with it or not. So, at the very least, Xherdan will get regular playing time to keep growing and improving. I don't think it would be healthy for him to sit on the bench. I hope that clarifies things.

OK, back to Freiburg. The Bundesliga upstarts of the last few seasons are slowly coming down to earth. They've sold most anyone that played well for them, most notably Cisse, and their starting XI looks completely foreign to the one we crushed 7-0 in the Allianz at the start of the Hinrunde.

WWJHD? Jupp has some decisions to make in midfield. Start Tymo? Sit Goose? Start Robben? Sit Mueller? With two matches in four days, your guess is as good as mine. On the defensive side of things, it stays the same with Rafinha, Boateng, Badstuber and Lahm. And it's gratifying to hear that Diego Contento is back training after suffering a broken toe. Der Kapitan needs a break, dontcha think?

I'm looking forward to an agonizing five weeks of footie filled with lots of reading, writing, watching, arguing, hand-wringing and pint-drinking. Get on board, it's gonna be a bumpy ride!

And, as always... Auf gehts, Bayern!

Susie havent you heard!??! they will be using shaq as a right back.... ;) true story

Posted by Susie on 02/17/2012

Well, now I have. :)

Posted by Frank on 02/17/2012

we will be amazing next year... and have a RB like Dani Alves

Posted by Johann on 02/17/2012

Glad to see Shaqiri coming in, the squad really lacks depth and he is the first step to providing it. Classy youngster.

Dear Susie,

Any news regarding Howedes? he would be a great addition to the squad!

Looking forward to the Freiburg game, and then Basle, but i have a bad feeling about it, hope everything turns out alright, as they're not a team that is easy to beat.

Auf Gehts Bayern

@ Susie, Shaqiri won't be loaned out and he won't be playing right back. Who knows what will happen to Robben at the Euros this summer. Muller and Shaqiri will be trading time with Ribery and Robben.

@Frank, I'm assuming you're talking about Rafinha at RB.

I don't think we start Robben. FCF are hard running and physical, save him for Basel. We need to win this one in 1st half.

Why do people still think our squad lacks depth? Other than 3 injuries to our backline and one in midfield, we have quality all over. Alaba and Gustavo are "bench", but they've played very well lately. That leaves Tymo and Pranjic as "bench." People don't like Pranjic, but he would be starting for Everton if he got his trade, and they beat several big teams in the EPL this year. Oh, and then there's still Olic on the "bench." And, either Muller, or Robben on the "bench" tomorrow. Other than Peterson, Contento, and Rafinha the whole team have plenty of international experience, even Alaba and kroos

Bayern plan to use him on the RW and the LW and have no plans to use him in a defensive position.

Bayern plan to sign either Dante/Howedes for the Cb spot and that may move Jerome Boateng to RB but definitely not Shaq!

Hey Ojays, we may have gotten Dante, but I would rather get Vertonghen than Howedes. Dante, Vertonghen, Shaqiri, and Lewondowski would be a good summer. Maybe bring Can up from the reserves as well.

Apparently, Dante's release clause is only 4.6 mil. a total steal. To get Shaqiri and Dante for much less than Hazzard, or Erickson would be some seriously good business.

Hi Susie, am very worried after watching our game against Freiburg, we were very poor our game lacked inspiration and something is very wrong. Now even i have doubts if we are going to beat Basel, bundesliga is now between Dortmund and 'Gladbach, 4pts is too much for us to make up against Dortmund who even though are not playing well are still grinding one nil wins. Am very very worried.

Posted by latibaba on 02/20/2012

Yes,we lost another 2 ponits!
B.Dortmund now lead by 4 good point!!
By my personal opinion, little was wrong with the team.
Muller had a very bad day and ought to have being substituted for Olic and not Gomez for Olic.
Gustavo was too dormant and not articulate and ougth to have being substituted for Tymoschuk, that could have stabilize the midfield and prevent frieburg from further attacking.
Robben intro was a very good one,he brought life into the game,if not for BAUMAN frieburg keeper,he should have added to his tally.
However Rafinha could have remained while Kroos have some rest or better still Alaba.
Better still the 1 point could still be very useful in the future,as this is the worst that could happen to us While i wait to see how B.Dortmund and B.monglabach stand to manage thier own down time period of the season.

We're gunning for TREBLE,and the only obstacle for its achievement is we,nothing can stop us,not even any of the B-teams.
Mia san mia.

Just wondering, why is JH not starting robben? If he were to play the full match, who knows the result might be different. Gomez has not been playing well lately, could have given Olic a start and try him out.

Posted by Ruud on 02/20/2012

Another disappointing result (not game)...
played reasonably well, but couldn't finish. Another result like this one, and we'll be kissing the first competition goodbye, i hope they put their act together, and stop wasting those precious points.

Let's see what happens in Switzerland!

Auf Gehts Die Roten!

Please read out up on some German football websites before stating that Shaq will NOT be playing in the defense and no I didnt mean Rafinha.... www.kicker.de and www.sportbild.de could help.... also Shaq has played in the defense before for basel when they played young boys and ZSKA Moscow

Posted by grudnik on 02/20/2012

Several sources report that Dante is a done deal.

Bayern is paying the 4.7M escape clause, and he's signed a 4-year deal.

Posted by grudnik on 02/20/2012

Frank,
I regularly read kicker.de and local Munich papers, and all I saw was a mention of the fact that he has been used at RB before, but nothing about Bayern plans to use him there.

Do you have a link?

Posted by benjamin on 02/20/2012

i already love that swiss guy. talking about his favorite club barcelona and how he wants to play there one day, his desire to play in the olympics just to miss bayern's pre season. fantastic.

Posted by grudnik on 02/21/2012

Frank,
I read it. Did you?

Not once does it mention in the article that Bayern is considering playing him at left back.

The entire article is speculation by one of his current teammates (Alexander Frei) that Shaqiri would be a worldclass outside defender, as opposed to just a pretty good offensive player.

Got anything else?

Posted by Frank on 02/21/2012

If Hitzfeld started shaqiri as a right back before why wouldnt heynckes consider doing it?

Posted by Ruud on 02/22/2012

Simple, Because he rocks in the offensive half, he's a natural winger, and can easily be deployed in the attacking mid when needed...

I'm still hopefull that we get Howedes, he can play at central and right defense!
