Well, that was 90 minutes of my life I'd like to have back.

The only real good news after the loss to Borussia Dortmund on Saturday was the nifty little statistic that Bayern Munich had never lost two games in a row at the Allianz Arena. So naturally, I figured we'd go through. I mean, it's only Schalke 04, right? Felix Magath's die Knappen have had a rather dismal record versus die Roten the last few years. And that, coupled with their horrible domestic campaign this season? "Wir farhen nach Berlin!"

You know, or not.

While Dortmund effectively shut down Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben by throwing them in to double coverage for 90 minutes, it wasn't necessary for Schalke to do the same. Both attacking wingers looked uninspired, trotting out the same old stuff. Not horrible stuff, mind you, but neither man really played with any zip.

What the hell has happened to Bastian Schweinsteiger? While his performance against Schalke wasn't as crushingly bad as his weekend's performance versus Dortmund, it was still sub-par for the "engine of Bayern Munich". I do not have enough fingers to count the times the match commentator said, "taken off the toe of Schweinsteiger". He seems to have lost some confidence in his abilities, noted by his lack of finishing when the crosses did come his way.

And now, many people are saying letting van Bommel go to Milan was a mistake. I'm not ready to go there. But, I'm certainly ready to have the old Basti back. ASAP, please.

Thomas Mueller and Mario Gomez were effectively shackled by Benedikt Hoewedes and Christoph Metzelder, both who played excellently in front of Neuer.

And speaking of Neuer, the Bayern faithful went ahead and wrecked any chance of him being in a red jersey next season: Signs of "Koan Neuer!" (No Neuer) held up by thousands in the Suedkurve. I get it, I do. He's been a member of Schalke since he was 4. But, he's outstanding. His switch in mid-air to deny a Bayern equalizer wholly underlines this. Could Kraft have gotten that? Perhaps. He's undoubtedly a talented young man. But, when you can have Number One? Maybe the Neuer money is better spent addressing the personnel problems we continue to have at center back and left back. But, it's not like we haven't had the opportunity to do that.

Sigh. So very frustrating. My biggest knock on van Gaal's game plan would be the build-up of play from the back four, rather than the holding midfield. Watching the defensive line play tiki-taki with 20 minutes left and down a goal? Inexplicable. And rightly, Schalke didn't bite. Felix Magath kept his men orderly, in front of the ball, protecting their 1-0 lead.

"It’s important we show the right reaction and take the points, so we return to the places in the table which mean we can enter the Champions League against next season,” declared Rummenigge on Bayern's website. “Every match until the end of the season is a final. Sometimes it’s good when you have the chance to put things right just three days later.”

And put it right, they must. A win Saturday at Hannover would go a long way to restoring confidence. A win would see us in 3rd place, leapfrogging the Hannoverians. A win will be the start of salvaging what is left of a Bayern season in tatters.

Lastly, on a personal note: I watched the Champions League Round of 16 draw from my hotel room in Frankfurt in December. When we drew Inter Milan, my phone immediately blew up with texts from all of my Munich friends. "Are you coming back for the match?" And yes, I am. I leave for Munich next Thursday, albeit in a different mood than I expected to.

I was expecting to be fighting for a slim chance at the Bundesliga title, to cheer on a team that was going to Berlin, and to get revenge for the only loss I had ever seen live: The CL final last May in Madrid. Well, at least I still get a shot at the third. And perhaps I can relax and enjoy my trip, without having to worry about anything silly like championships...

Can't wait to see you, either. Not sure Munich's ready for the two of us!

disaster.

Agreed.

Make it 270, Susie.

Just watched the Hannover debacle. Going into the game, we knew we wouldn't have Schweinsteiger, a blow to be sure, but in the past week I convinced myself that it was a blessing in disguise--he needs the break I rationalized.

No Schweinsteiger, no problem. He needs the break, and Kroos and Gustavo will get the job done. Only Gustavo has the flu. So what's plan C? Kroos and Pranjic. The first domino toppled before the game even started. Pranjic is not a disaster in the center of the park, but in that spot he's effectively stripped of his most significant offensive contribution: the occasional decent cross. The real problem with Pranjic in the center of the park is the fact th it tends to set off a chain reaction of disastrous selection decisions. If Pranjic isn't at LB, who is? Badstuber? Gasp! Is LVG the only person left on the planet who hasn't written the words "exposed for pace time and time again"in some kind of post- match analysis of a Badstuber LB outing?

Seriously, by now, I'm sure there are five-year olds in Madagascar who have posted that very analysis of Badstuber on fan sites.
If Pranjic isn't at LB (and Contento is still out of favor), and Badstuber is, then who will be our CB pairing this week? Breno and Tymoshchuk. Fine. I have nothing bad to say about these individuals, but how many times have they lined up together? How many different CB parings have we had?
LVG seems determined to prove that he is a tactical genius by eschewing the obvious choices. I'll be forever grateful that he gave Schweini the chance to be a 6, but his constant tinkering is making me nuts. We lined up with a natural CB at LB, a natural DM at CB, and a natural winger in the center...Europa League, here we come. If we're lucky.

Kraft might have sealed his fate and that of the man who vouched for him. Yes, every keeper has a howler every once in a while, but Kraft committed two in the space of .3 seconds. 1) Too far off his line with a man at the top of the D; 2) Egad, I can't even describe what happened next. Can you imagine Neuer mishandling that ball? Do you remember Neuer CATCHING a ball hit 3x harder by Robben on Wednesday?
Of course, none of this would matter if everyone played with Robben's intensity. Is the long lay-off helping him? Is everyone else just tired of football? Do we need Van Bommel? Can someone tell LVG that if we always build from the back, the opposition can always pressure the ball in the diciest spots against nominal defenders who have only played together occasionally?

What a nightmare. The situation at the back has reached critical mass. This is the third consecutive match in which Bayern have enjoyed over 60% possession and lost. Dual holding mids don't work when weakness at the back allows opponents to generate equal or better chances with 20 minutes fewer in possession. The defensive mid situation isn't as bad as people make it out to be. Form comes and goes, but Schweini is terrific. He'll get back to his old ways. Gustavo got sick; it happens. People forget Tymo's natural position is defensive mid. Sure, our holding mids looked fragile and slow today, but of the three best holding mids we have, two were out of the lineup and one was filling in for our abysmal center backs. Long term, we should be fine there. One last thing, Gomez didn't have a decent shot tonight as he didn't against BVB or Schalke. For all his goals, he only finishes chances. He doesn't create them. When he's covered well, nothing happens. Not tough to man-mark out of a game.

Neuer was actually about to make the same mistake in the Schalke-Stuttgart match today, but he caught the ball right before it crossed the goal line. And I guess this scene epitomizes the difference between him and Kraft. Although he gave up a deadly goal when Bayern was looking like they could come back, you can't blame him alone for today's loss against Hanover, the defense was horrible-once again. I don't really know what to do-maybe try Lahm on LB and give Altintop another chance as RB. Breno was looking ok, and it should be van Buyten's turn again-the whole D is just too small and constantly gives away crucial headers. The whole 4-2-2-1-1 system isn't working too well, so maybe switch back to Klose and Gomez up front, give up the double CB. While Bayern is certainly having a tactical problem right now, the whole team additionally lacks confidence and seems to be stuck in old routines. I'm sorry I have to say this but van Gaal inevitably has to go-there's no way around it.

SIMPLE STOP PLAYING PLAYERS OUT OF POSITION AND FIRE VAN GAAL!!!!

Starting line up

Butt-Lahm, Breno, Badstuber, Contento-Tymoshuck/Gustavo, Schweinsteiger-Ribery, Mueller/Kroos, Robben-Gomez/Klose

Play players to their strengths and all of these defeats would have been avoided, plus Butt needs to play as his experience is needed to organise the defence

I thought, with all the ups and downs this season, that was the most disgusted day for me this year. Then, came Saturday's loss vs. Hannover... Yeah, what's going on with your man, Susie?!? *sigh*
