Some musings worth mentioning after the Freiburg match, before we head in to the week of international competition.

When Ribery scored the winner on the 88th minute, such a yell erupted out of my mouth that my upstairs neighbour came down to make sure everything was OK. "Ribery scored", I gleefully shouted as I answered the door. But, he's Canadian. The blank stare I got in return made me think footie's not entirely his thing.

Not sure if the penalty called on Kraft was entirely just. I guess I could see where you could call it either way, but in my mind, it was a bit harsh. So, when he subsequently stopped Cisse's shot, I thought it karma. As was Cisse's goal a couple minutes after.

If Robben's groin problems continue, it's my fervent hope that Mueller swings out wide, with Klose in the hole behind Gomez. Hamit Altintop is not our best option. He's got no finish.

Wonder what van Gaal said at half-time? Still a few tricks up his sleeve, I suppose. After getting played off the park in the first half, die Roten managed to get it together in the second, even though it looked like we were heading for a draw. One little piece of luck went our way when Ribery scored the winner.

Speaking of management: Forget Mark Hughes, Jogi and the rest. Jupp Heynckes will be on the sidelines for Bayern next season. His decision to leave Leverkusen, coupled with his being BFFs with Uli, pretty much make this a foregone conclusion.

And finally, Holger gets a call-up for the DFB? When he can't even start for our crap back line? Perhaps Jogi's sweater is a bit too tight and is cutting off the circulation to his brain?

It will be nice to hop off this Bayern Munich roller-coaster ride for a week and watch the DFB kick some Kazakhstani and Aussie butt. Any random thoughts or questions I'll be glad to answer below. Until next time...

Auf gehts, Bayern!

what do you think is the long term outlook for Robben? Like van Persie, you can only rely on him for 20-30 games at best it seems.

Is it worth selling him while he still has some significant value for a player or two who can at least play a full season?

Tough call.

I think Jupp will usher in a more-balanced offense; where everything isn't so reliant on Robbery.

LvG's problem was his squad size, among other things, and not having an adequate replacement for Robben when he's injured. Of course, no one is going to be as amazing as Arjen... But Altintop is certainly not the answer.

Of course, this is all a moot point if we don't qualify for CL.

Heard the sream all the way here Susie...Maybe it was me joining in the celebration and I am Canuck as well...Footy is big in my house! Swinging Muller out wide would be a great option, he has played out there with the DFB and has done well. Holger getting the call up hahahaha Jogi's scarf may have been tighter than his "Mode hemd" cutting off some bloodflow to his noodle. Getting off the roller coaster is a great idea ... lately all the ups and downs, twists and turns have meiner magen feeling worse than after a night at Oktoberfest. Schwartz...Rot... Goldig!!!!
PROST!!

Who do you think Bayern will target in the summer Transfer window to fix the defence and do you think Neuer will be at Bayern next season and do you think Bayern will go get another striker?

Posted by scott Meier on 03/22/2011

He's got plenty of finish, but one can hardly expect him to conjure it with the kind of sporadic playing time he's been getting. Gotta be in a rhythm to score goals--gotta get games to get in rhythm.

He'd have more goals like this if he stayed with Schalke. Well, maybe not quite like this.

Great article as usual. I think the term roller-coaster is bit of an understatement for this week. I think i've developed a personality disorder after the last 7 days (the whole season come to think of it). In any case, awesome blog as usual. I screamed like hell when Ribery scored...a lot of build up frustration from this god awful season.

Apparently Neuer is confirmed to be heading to Bayern can someone in the know confirm this? Also what is the rumour mill with regards to new defenders?

Posted by macleoud on 03/23/2011

we have the strongest attack in europe...our problem is in the defense it is below average.

Neuer will guard our goal, i wanted so much to get hummels back at any price, and look for defensive winger as lahm gets back to his original position.

please write a blog about your opinion on bundesliga being granted an extra champions league spot.

Rhart---

Seriously. I'm about to have a heart attack here.

Victor---

Neuer's coming. I'm pretty close to betting my life on it. Fabio Coentrao from Benifica seems very likely. But I'd wait on all the other rumors--- although Cahill would be nice. :)

As far as strikers? We will have Olic back next season. I think they'll wait on his form to see whether we need to add one.

Scott---

There are people who come off the bench and make a more immediate impact than Altintop. Can we agree to disagree? :) And yes, that goal was spectacular.

Paul---

Thanks!

Stefan---

Read comments to Victor. :) It's tough to decipher every single article you read, since we're linked with just about everyone. But Neuer coming out and saying that he wants to stay in Germany? To me that says the deal is done. And the Coentrao rumor has been so persistent; to me seems very likely as well.

Macleoud---

The Hummels issue is the worst. Ugh. So very frustrating when our problems are so massive this year.

Diemar---

The only thing I can say right now is that I wish it had gone in to effect this season and not next!

Why the heart attack Susie? hahaha

Why should Jlo not call Holger to the NT when he has been in outstanding form for Germany after the WC playing next to Merta? Only 1 goal allowed in 5 matches.

Most people fail to recognize Bayern's defensive problems. Besides bad defenders (like Breno or Micho) and converted defenders (Tymo, Gustavo, Pranjic) there is another huge factor: Van Gaal's system is obsolete in today's German Football. His tactical approach makes Bayern’s defense worst than what it is and that’s the reason why Holger is efficient for JLo and not for LVG. Holger’s ball distribution, timing and transitions is second to none, he is a little slow but has good instinct for anticipation.

LVG possession football where the ball travels side to side with long strings of passes a few times before it gets to ¾ of the field started to create a long space between the defensive midfield line and the back line, to fix the problem LVG first experimented with the Full Backs making a move in everytime there was a turnover but that left the wings exposed and more than a few goals came that way, then he moved the backline forward transferring that gap between the Center Backs and the GK, this has resulted in so many 1v1’s in the back line which is the ultimate thing any coach wants even with good defenders; in Bayern’s case it exposes the worst of each defender, including Holger who was killed by speed in the Dortmund game.

The new German school, mainly played by Dortmund, Hannover and Mainz in the BL and all sides at National Team Level which relies on moving the lines on defensive mode close to each other in your own half to close all the spaces with pressure only in that zone, then after forcing a turnover go on attack vertically with a stretching component on the front line to create spaces is a killer for LVG’s philosophy. Count how many turnovers caught Bayern’s lines up on the field, many.

I go further, in LVG’s system his biggest assets, the offensive line has become ineffective as well, they are predictable and many teams in the BL figured out how to neutralize it. Only here and there you see a big individual effort from Robben, Gomez, Ribery or Muller to score a goal. The field vision for the long accurate passes of Schweinsteiger and Kroos is wasted when they have to play stringing the ball with short passes, which also exposes both of them weakness: speed. I am convinced that Jurgen Klopp takes the same Bayern line up and will make it work better, give space to Robben, Ribbery, Muller and Gomez and they will double the goals they score, move the defensive lines closer and Bayern will cut in half the number of goals allowed, at that point Holger and Van Buyten might not be as bad as they look right now.

When JLo calls Holger to the NT he knows what he is doing. BTW, Miro Klose has been on Bayern’s bench longer than Holger and JLo not only calls him everytime, he fields him over Gomez.

Susie:

Just saying there's a big difference between "no finish" and finish of the year. :) He had the goal of the round a few weeks back as well. With Olic out, there aren't a whole lot of options that jump to mind. I agree to disagree. Switching gears to Saturday.

Hmmmmm,How amusing that "Die Bayern" showed up for the Mannschafft today... Thomas Muller played on the wing with some pretty good success... Miro who is more uccustomed lately of sitting and collecting slivers got the start and proved he can still finish... Super Mario came on as a substitute and in true National fashion...did not perform. Schweini was definately on today with loads of touches on the ball...Lahm played better too... Maybe it does have something to do with Coaching style after all. Couldn't imagine what Bayern would look like with the addition of a player like Ozil...wouldn't that be wunderbar? Klose in an interview after the match made mention about purchasing a new home in Kaiserlautern. hmmmmmmmm

So ein tag.... ein tag so shon wie heute!!

4-0 Deutschland...Schwartz...ROT... Goldig!!!
