Am I the only one who was unhappy with the 3-1 victory on Saturday over Mainz? All the reviews I read were headed with titles like "Bayern Thrash Mainz" or "German Title Holders Storm Over Mainz". Hmmmmm...

Not that it wasn't lovely to get the three points, and for a short time move up to second place in the Bundesliga. And, of course, it's wonderful to see Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben back out on the pitch together, working their magic. Bastian Schweinsteiger's goal was a definite plus. And the added bonus of seeing Toni Kroos finally returned from injury? Great.

So, what am I unhappy about, you ask?

• Inter blog: Confirmation or revenge?

What happened when Louis van Gaal decided to put on the brakes and defend for the rest of the match? Oh yeah, Mainz scored. Granted they beat us at the start of the season, but that was kind of like kicking a wounded dog. It was the manner in which they scored on Saturday that was upsetting. After Breno switched in for Thomas Mueller on 80 minutes, Allagui got space in front of Pranjic and beat Hans Joerg-Butt, Kraft's second-half replacement.

Let's face it, Holger Badstuber was, again, horrible. Very Raggedy-Andy-like. And frankly, of late, has me wishing for Daniel Van Buyten or, gasp!- Demichelis back. (OK, not quite that much.) And his form has me wondering what happened to Breno?! There was nothing I could see in the Brazilian that necessitated van Gaal putting him on the bench. The coach works in mysterious ways...

And, to be short (pun intended), Danjiel Pranjic shouldn't be allowed anywhere near the centre of the field. If LvG is going to do the right thing: Problem solved with Toni Kroos back.

The glitch in the Bayern armour has been, and continues to be, serious lapses in defensive concentration. This showed most recently in the match against Koeln earlier this month. Up 2-0 at the half, die Roten was content to sit on a two-goal lead and allowed lowly Koeln to come back and score 3 in the second half.

If that were the only time it happened this season, it would be an aberration, and no cause for concern. However, look at the away to Wolfsburg match in January (gave up a late equalizer), the Bundesliga match away to Stuttgart right before the break (allowed them to score 3 second-half goals), and away to Monchengladbach in November (2 second-half goals in 4 minutes).

I note the away matches because we are, ahem... at the San Siro on Wednesday (not to mention at home Saturday versus Dortmund). And since we cannot be relied upon to keep a clean sheet this season, the only way to beat Inter Milan is to be relentless in attack. For 90+ minutes. Full throttle. Foot firmly on the gas and all that.

Thankfully, we have a front four of such outstanding quality, that this is possible. Mario Gomez, Thomas Mueller, Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben? Shenanigans! The only knock on them are the chances that should have been put away and weren't. We will need every goal from every chance. That's not asking too much, is it?

I would start Breno over Badstuber along with Tymoschuk in central defence, as we do need size and physicality to overcome Samuel Eto'o. I'm really not convinced Badstuber is up to the job. At all.

Toni Kroos and Bastian Schweinsteiger should be in charge of corralling Wesley Sneidjer and Dejan Stankovic. Very interesting. And I think the match is won or lost on how effective our holding midfield is. If Bastian and Toni can keep possession and vision, we win in Italy.

The Chivu / Ribery and Maicon / Robben match-ups will be a pleasure to watch. For Bayern fans. Not that Chivu and Maicon aren't without talent, but they are facing arguably the most devastating pair of wingers in the competition. Backed up, of course, by Philipp Lahm and Luis Gustavo.

Notice how I've said nothing about revenge. Let's see how the first leg plays out, and then we can talk about that. After all, this is a two-part race. Part One starts tomorrow. Foot firmly on the gas.

Auf gehts, Bayern!

Susie, who do you think does a player job in the play making role behind Gomez, Muller or Kroos? It seems Muller has more of an eye for goal, while Kroos more creativity. Tonite ill have the joy of watching bayern live at 245am in a ant infested cheap hotel in a small city in cambodia...the things we do for love... Wir sind Bayern!

Great article. I hadn't considered full steam ahead at the San Siro. It could take that to overcome the defensive recalcitrance of Inter with Cambiasso in front of the back four. Still, Spurs played with such temerity at Inter and found themselves a man and four goals down at half. Eto'o and Sneijder are a handful for even good defenses.
What did you think of Müller in behind Gomez? He still runs with the ball well, fills the gaps when Gomez drifts out wide, and finished Robben's chip pass calmly. He doesn't have the creative vision to play others in though. It's a moot point as is because we're short on central mids and Kroos and Müller should both play. If the back line was good and Tymo could play def mid along side Schweini, who would you put behind Gomez? I think Kroos is a better provider, but can't dribble with pace amd take defenders on like Müller. For now, with Kroos as a holding mid, Müller's the only option. Is it worth it keeping him in the CF role once Olić gets back?

The CBs will need a lot of help. Not sure if Kroos is quite ready, would prefer to see Gustavo in that role, though ultimately i do believe next to Schweini is Kroos's best place, just needs time to work on tackling and situational awareness. Agree with Breno over Badstuber, mostly due to pace.

Brett- IMHO, Mueller is all but guaranteed that spot and Olic, once again, can try to displace Gomez when healthy.

Do got a question for ya. Most of the Bayern fans in the online world seem to have given up on Contento. I certainly haven't. Thoughts?

Niles and Brett---

I think the 10 spot is Mueller's to lose. No, he doesn't have the creativity that Kroos has, but we've got that in spades coming from Robben and Ribery.

What makes our DM's jobs so tough, is that you've got four guys up front that don't really track back. And when you couple that with our CB situation... Yikes. I'm constantly surprised how effective Schweini is which how much ground he has to cover. :)

FCTejas---

I would say that majority of fans have given up on Contento when he chose to play for Italy over Germany. Fair? No. But, so be it. Also, let's remember how short a memory van Gaal seems to have. If Gustavo is linking up well with Ribery, chances are he'll be staying there.

Toni kroos isnt starting for the first leg, is he?
It will be gustavo in CM and pranjic as the LB.
To win comfortably, we need to park the bus like inter always does and take them down on the break, there is no way we can keep the ball effectively with our possesion play,we are bound to lose possesion cheaply some point in time and inter's conter attack is much more faster and effective than any of the bundesliga sides to get away like we did against mainz.

I only saw the 1st 1/2 on replay but it seems Kraft was the hero. As with young Neuer, the young goalies have the reaction times, similar to hockey goalies...But Inter is not done, need to solve them for a goal or 2 at Allianz

Finally! A German victory on Italian soil! A fantastic performance against Inter today, and a great coming out party for Gustavo who played superb in the midfield along Schweini. I completely agree about not letting off the pedal in any competitive match, and against Inter there was no way Bayern could afford to, and just look at that marvelous result! Hopefully Badstuber gets his act together soon as he's given up too many opportunities for the opposition's attack. On that point the entire centerback position needs some attention. Despite playing excellent today, I can't say that Bayern should make Kraft their number 1 for next season. In looking out for the national team, Neuer needs to be in the CL and it would only benefit Germany to have him on FCB. Next victim, Dortmund...
