In my last entry I stated MY best possible Bayern Munich starting XI. Louis van Gaal, strangely, chose not to listen to me at all. I wonder why that is...
Instead he chose to start Danijel Pranjic and Andreas Ottl as holding midfielders, keep Schweini in the playmaker's role, sit Breno in favor of Antoliy Tymoschuk and give (my favorite player ever) Hamit Altintop a start, opposite Thomas Mueller, in attacking midfield.
Well, it worked. Ish.
German fussball giants, Bayern Munich, took down second-division Alemannia Aachen 4-0 on Wednesday night to progress, for a record 22nd time, to the semi-finals of the DFB Pokal. I said "Ish" above, for the scoreline was not entirely indicative of the run of play. There was uncertainty by Bayern at the start of the second half and only a couple of errrr... crafty saves by young Thomas saved the away team blushes as Bayern had failed to capitalize on their narrow one-goal margin.
Thomas Mueller rightly deserved man-of-the-match honours as he netted a brace and was involved in almost every aspect of Bayern's attack. His partnership and fluidity with Mario Gomez keeps growing. This will serve both of them well as we get in to the latter stages of the Bundesliga and Champions League competitions.
Gustavo's pace up the flank was refreshing. His cross in to Gomez for the opening goal? Perfect. The only knock was the clumsy tackle on Auer which probably should've resulted in a penalty for Aachen. I'll go ahead and say that he got a bit of the ball. Ish.
The real game changer was, of course, Arjen Robben. Towards the end of the first half, when the camera cut to Mr. Robben wildly gesticulating on the bench, I thought, "Good. He's done with the sniffles." But then when he wasn't on the pitch at the beginning of the second half, and we started getting beat up a bit by Aachen, I was internally chanting, "Take Hamit off. Take Hamit off."
And as much as it pains me to say it, Hamit Altintop was not horrible. But the Dutch guy sitting on the bench is/was infinitely better, as the scoreline indicates. Arjen comes in for 20 minutes and we score three goals in that span.
What is most amazing to me is that he plays the same scenario over and over. Run down the flank, cut in towards the box, draw the double coverage, and then either shoot or kick it out to the man left uncovered. Simple. Brilliant. And no one can stop it... Well, except Jose Mourinho's Inter. And we'll see how that holds up in February and March.
So, we've booked a spot in the last four - along with Schalke and second division sides Duisburg and Cottbus. You've got to tip Schalke and Bayern going through, each facing second division sides in their semi-final matches. Stranger things, of course, have happened. But, a Schalke - Bayern final in Berlin? Who wouldn't watch that one?

hi susie,
it would be wonderful in India to watch a schalke vs bayern final ......always been a fan of raul and adore schweini (who would ny with that german name???) but seriously, we will be bothered by an over reliane on Mr Glass Robben!!! happened in UCL final last year and innumerable times while he was at Madrid!!!......we need more playmakers and goal scorers, hence we should get Suarez or some of those crafty mid fielders from spain's La liga........your views appreciated as always!!

Ravi---
We have foils for Arjen Robben on the other flank. Namely, Ribery and Mueller. However, Hamit is definitely NOT the solution.

I think we need Lahm to involve more on the flank while Robben doing his trick so we will have opening oo both side. in the box we will have Gomez or Muller to pouch it in.
if Ribery is not available for Inter match , we definitely need Pranjic to take over his place.
Pranjic , Gustavo on left and Robben, Lahm on right while in attacking mode in that way Schweini and Tymoschuk cover mildfiled or one of them all the way deep. 4-1-4-1 formation.
But like alway i personally want to see Inter crush at opening game in San Siro.

Bayern drew Schalke at home in the semi-final, so there will be a 2nd division club in the final this year! (Energie Cottbus or MSV Duisburg)

Susie,
I think the biggest question over our team is Kroos. He is such an unbelievable talent, but i feel given how good he knows he is, and that there is so much competition for his preferred play making role, he'll get frustrated and move on if we do not play him, or he does not but stagnates playing out of position or on the bench. I hope LvH comes to his senses and plays the team as you have recommended.

Hi Susie,
I watch a Bayern game whenever I get a chance, but honestly I do feel Altintop is a better fit for Bayern than Ribery. Unlike Robben who keeps moving forward, Ribery tends to hold the ball, draw defenders towards him and lose it. Altintop is more of a team player with a simpler game that tends work better in terms of team dynamics.
I think the team can get decent results without Robben, they just do much better with him. Things have started to come together and it's nice to know that there is another source of goals besides Gomez taking into consideration Klose's form and Olic's injury.

Hallo Susie! Wie gehts es dir? I enjoy your commentary on my favorite club very much, but I must say, 2 weeks and no post?! Was machen Sie?

Susie,
I watched Robben almost every game for six years...and he has it down to a science. I call it the hexagonal option when Robben cuts inside...
1. Shoot to bottom right of goal...
2. Shoot to upper left of goal...
3. Cut the ball to overlapping Lahm...
4. Cut the ball to a near post run (Muller/ Schweini)...
5. Lob to ball to a far post header (Gomez/Klose)...
6. Lay off the ball to onrushing midfield (Ribery/Schweini/Kroos/now Pranjic)...
Robben decides which is his best option...he is truly remarkable to watch!!!
