Remember when you first started playing footie?
You were probably 5 or 6 years old. You might have started playing during break at school, or perhaps a bit more organized at the park on the weekends. The ball looked absolutely humongous as 16 or so kids chased it around the field in one big mass of screaming, shrieking and flailing delight. Someone players on your team would always start running the wrong way while the adults on the sidelines would laugh, yelling, “Turn around, sweetie! Go the other way!”
Now, remember the other kids? There were always one or two on each team. The kid that got as far away from the action as possible. The kid who sat down and picked at long blades of grass to put between his thumbs and blow on. The kid who looked up at the sky and pointed at the shapes the clouds were making.
OK, remember Daniel van Buyten during the first half of the Frankfurt match…
You’re picking up what I’m putting down, yeah?
His first half was so shocking horrible that he had to be subbed after 45 minutes for the, ahem… virtuoso center-back Martin Demichelis. Martin, doing a bang-up job defending this season, decided that maybe up-front is the spot for him. You know, with the off-side calls and all.
I can see his reasoning, I think. The only time anybody’s had anything nice to say about him this campaign is when he came off the bench and scored a goal. So, perhaps nobody will notice how poorly he’s been playing if he puts one in the net every once in a while?
Trust me, Mr. Demichelis, we all notice.
Other than that, boys: Great match! If I may go so far as to say (and I will) that this was the most satisfactory 90 minutes I’ve seen this season.
Breno did an admirable job covering for the other half of the center-back pairing. The loan last season to Nuremberg did him nothing but good. Not that he was error-free, mind you, but the couple of balls he misjudged, he ran back, fought for, and won.
Now, I’m not convinced that the pairing of Breno and Holger Badstuber (once he returns from injury) is formidable enough to match up with the firepower we’ll be facing in Europe after the winter break… But, it’s far better than what we’ve got anchoring us currently. (And, I use “anchoring” in the lightest possible sense.)
The much-deserved game ball went to Antoliy Tymoschuk, who continues to surprise and impress this season. Impressing so much, in fact, that the general opinion seems to warrant him retaining a starting position; despite the fitness of captain Mark van Bommel.
Louis van Gaal now has an unexpected wealth of talent in the holding midfield position. And some tough decisions to make, as Andreas Ottl has also been a revelation this year.
So, WWLVGD?
Thankfully for him, he won’t have to rustle too many feathers (as if he hasn’t done that enough?) until after the winter break. With Arjen Robben still out; keeping Toni Kroos on the wing and Bastian as the playmaker opens up the defensive midfield positions to some combination of van Bommel / Ottl / Tymoschuk. Although the pairing of Tymo and van Bommel seems unlikely due to their practice pitch dust-up a couple of weeks back.
And I don’t want to call him “Super Mario” just yet, but Mr. Gomez is finally earning that nickname in a red and white kit. Long have I been enamoured of his form, but not his form. Winkwinknudgenudge. But, he’s certainly proving, given the chance, that he can score goals. Lots of goals.
We all know the turning point of last season was our do-or-die match against Juventus in Turin. And words like “amazing” and “stupendous” flowed from my fingertips as I rained glory down on Bayern Munich. I’m gonna be a bit more reticent this time around. And it seems like the team is following suit: Putting their collective heads down, working towards the 10 point minimum before the break.
We are back in the top 5. We are a stone’s throw away from Champions League qualification next season and have won our group this season. We are still in the DFB Pokal. We will stop nagging at each other because we will keep winning.
We will be lying-in-wait when Dortmund stumbles. And that’s the Bayern Munich I know and love.

Congratulations on the win. If Bayern keep that up, they will qualify for UCL next year. It was a great game; clever one touch passing and movement, superb ball retention, and 4 goals. Still, Leverkusen and Hannover have very easy schedules before the break. Bayern fans may have to be patient in moving up the table (not a strong suit for them). Also, Bayern need BVB to stumble, not once, but FIVE times minimum to close Hollywood's 14 point gap. Dortmund have the talent and depth to keep this pace all year. How should the lineup go once Robben returns? Should LVG play Robben, Ribery, and Muller together? If so should Ribery be the central attacking mid with Muller and Robben on the wings and Schweinsteiger holding or should Muller play up front with Robben and Ribery on the wings and Schweinsteiger as the attacking center mid?
@ Kevin: Gibbs is a good move for someone, but not Bayern. Bayern need a center back. Lahm, Pranjic, and Contento should be fine for fullbacks.

Alper---
Thanks, babe. Corrected at once! And I'll be seeing you soon... Can't wait.
Brett---
We may not catch anyone else before the break, I was referring to the season as a whole. While Leverkusen generally starts out strong, they have a nasty habit of imploding the second half. And Hannover? They haven't proven anything for quite some time. :)
Dunno if LVG would switch to a 4-4-2 when he's got the positional talent in a 4-5-1. But, stranger things have happened.

Great column as always! Just one correction:
You wrote, "We will be lying-in-wait when Dortmund stumbles. And that’s the Bayern Munich I know and love."
I wouldn't count on Dortmund slipping up. Perhaps you can join us in the champions league next year. It'll be nice to see two german teams make it far in the tournament for a change.

Andreas---
Well, I am a Bayern fan and all... :)
Truth be told, I wouldn't mind if Dortmund won the BL this year. As long as we make it interesting and qualify for CL, of course.

I have to say as a die-hard Bayern fan that I love your blog. Your DvB comments are stop on. He's the kid picking dandelions on the pitch.
Also although Dortmund are kicking but, it's very rare that a such a young team as Dortmund can keep up such a winning streak season long. I think we will see to them what happen to Hoffenheim and Leverkusen a few years back and last year respectively. I agree with Andreas though, I would love to see Dortmund in the CL as we can all see that Bremen has been a waste of time there for the better part of the decade.

AMAZINF article..
I'm a hardcore bayern fan... i agree with u on breno part, he did play really good in frankfurt game and trust me i cant believe he is still 21... but u know what?!!! breno--badstuber can do so good together im pretty sure why? they are both quick, tall, good in the air, aggressive, good passing.......
demichelis is a good back up but buyten should leave bayern and Mr. Van gaal should consider doing that and stop depending on buyten he is just a fat ass...
mario gomez is back in business and can help bayern so much this term.. u could see last year during man united game how aggressive he was, he played good football back then...
now he is back to scoring ways.. i wish him the best... although i think bayern should consider buying a young striking in january because it seems like klose wont be back on form...
and yeah. one thing u didnt mention... daniel pranjic is doing good on the left side but still not enough.. his defensive skills are limited.we need a gd LB

I disagree with you about Ottl was so glad to see him being dropped, he is literally a phantom on the pitch and does not contribute to the game. Saturdays success was due to a great partnership between Tymo and Kroos which freed Schweinsteiger in a playmaking role. Kroos's technical skill makes him an excellent no.6. Badstuber and Breno hopefully will show the way forward in central defence.

Paul---
The youth of Dortmund leads me to believe that they will stumble at some point. And yeah, I was definitely thinking of Hoffenheim and Leverkusen when I wrote that.
Soumar---
We definitely need another striker at some point. Dzeko would be nice, or even Bendtner from Arsenal. But I'm not sure Bayern will pull the trigger over the winter, as Mueller can step up in to Mario's spot if he gets injured.
I'm convinced Contento is our man at LB. And Pranjic works well enough from the bench.
The pressing need has been and will be a CB.

Susie-
i can't quite wrap my head around "Andreas Ottl has also been a revelation this year." To the contrary, he's seemed like the weakest link on the pitch: poor marking in midfield, poor passing accuracy, and poor choice of shots. i just cannot remember him adding anything to Bayern's play; he's a warm body at best.
Ottl isn't horrible - Note 3,66 average -, but he hasn't shown himself to be anything more than a stop-gap measure for Bayern when every other midfielder is injured. i think he should really consider joining a team where he can contribute, maybe Köln.
(Wait, he did have an assist in 4-0 drubbing of Cluj.)

@Paul
I am sorry but you can´t compare Borussia Dortmund with Hoffenheim or Leverkusen. There is one thing that is completely different. The BVB has a team (a young one for sure)which has a core that is playing together in the Bundesliga for some years. The team has only some injured players and the others come from the bench and perform.
Borussia Dortmund is no Bundesliga newbee even though they have a young team ;)

Sorry Andre but Borussia can totally be compared to Leverkusen. Leverkusen is no Bundesliga newbee either yet there will be a time when suddenly nothing is running like it's supposed to. Let's see how this young Borussia team will cope with that. From what I've seen over the last several years they will break under pressure and Bayern, banning a catastrophe, will catch up with them easily. Every team has a negative series now and then, Dortmund hasn't had one so far this season. It will come, no doubt about it. They have also profited from all the other top teams bad form (like Bayern,Schalke, Werder). Dortmund is not really strong enough to stay up there.

I must laud you on your colorful prose wrt my beloved Bayern. Mario does, indeed, seem to to be in a rich vein of form at the moment, so let's not wake him up. Leave him alone for the moment to keep shoving goals in.
You can admire his form. I ask, whatever happened to the FCB female mascot of the month on their website????

Well put Andre. Hummels and Subotic have prior seasons together; though both 21, they are mature beyond their age. Sahin and Kuba are also settled at BVB despite their youth. However, Barrios and Grosskreutz are only in their 2nd year at BVB and came from poorer teams. New to both the club and level of football, they adjusted quickly. The same is true for Kagawa, Lewandowski, and Piszczek who are new transfers to the team this year. Bender and Gotze are young players who have handled the transition from reserve football to the top flight superbly. So, to the BVB doubters, the bees are not new even if new to this level of success. The ease with which the new players have integrated themselves will give them the depth to win all season and separate them from Hoffenheim and Leverkusen. Sometimes young, unfancied sides on a run of form fade out like Hoffeinheim and Leverkusen. Or, they become champions like Stuttgart and Wolfsburg. Dortmund are likely to join the latter group this year.

Buyten is 32 and this will probably be his last season as a regular CB. Demichelis has never really stopped showing his ample defensive frailties. Bayern play Breno and Badstuber as their CBs and with their combined lack of experience, their talent/potential notwithstanding, it will be hard for Bayern to be solid defensively. One good, experienced CB has to be bought, earlier the better. Ribery has got to start earning the obscene amount of money he gets paid. And Pranjic is awful as a left back.

bayern has the money and has the motivation at all levels to still do something great this season...so they will use the offseason to buy a centerback and left back...all other positions are well taken...neuer wont come til the summer.
this should make them competitive but it will not make them competitive with Barca, the way they are playing now....Barca will destroy the likes of Timo and van Bommel. Having Schweini, Kroos and Mueller as well as Ribery will not be enough in the CL Final.
Finally, I am waiting for Kroos to step it up....he had a rocket of a shot vs. Freiburg last month....he should do more of that.
