I have so been waiting for this day! My kits have been purchased. German satellite is ready. German friend is ready. My computer is set-up for optimal streaming, as back-up. I have a rare Friday off of work. My schedule is clear. Appropriate flags, pendants and shawls are hanging about. Heck, I even bought new Adi Pure boots, knowing I liked them, but forgetting they were Schweini’s…
Let’s get this started!
The opening match of the 2010 - 2011 Bundesliga season pits our boys in red, last year’s Bundesliga champions, against Wolfsburg, the champs from the season before that. And while die Roten have been very, very quiet on the transfer market this summer, die Wolfe have undergone some major changes.
New man-in-charge, Steve McClaren, took over Wolfsburg after winning an Eredivise title with FC Twente last season. Changes in formation (switching to 4-2-3-1) and personnel? Sounds like van Gaal’s dodgy start with Bayern Munich a bit, eh? The Wolves eighth-place finish last year led to new signings, most notably, Arne Friedrich and Simon Kjaer, who will be anchoring the defense. And, if Edin Dzeko stays around, they’ll be a force to be reckoned with this season. Better, I think, to play them now--- before they get it all figured out.
OK, so we’ve got no new faces. But, we did welcome back everyone on loan: Toni Kroos, Jose Ernesto Sosa, Edson Braafheid, Breno and Andreas Ottl. Kroos, of course, will be starting in the ten spot. (Can I get a “Hell, yeah“?!) However, with injuries to Arjen Robben and his would-be replacement, Ivica Olic; everyone will get their turn to impress LvG.
On the other side, Wolfsburg should be full strength, with the exception of goalkeeper, Benaglio, whose wife is expecting.
Probable starting line-up for Bayern: Butt - Lahm, van Buyten, Badstuber, Contento - van Bommel, Schweinsteiger - Mueller, Kroos, Ribery - Klose.
And, for Wolfsburg: Hitz - Pekarik, Friedrich, Kjaer, Schaefer - Josue, Cicero - Riether, Misimovic, Mandzukic - Dzeko. (It’ll be strange to see Grafite on the bench, but I can’t say I’m not happy about it.)
After our dominating performance against Schalke 04, I think we’ll come out swinging.
“Remember Germania Windeck“, you say?
To that I reply, “I hardly think McClaren is gonna park the bus against us.”
He’ll be trying to go forward, and not just on fast breaks. This should open up the pitch enough to give our boys a little wiggle room. Now, if DvB and Badstuber can keep it together against Dzeko? Three points is a nice way to open a season, you think?
Immer Bayern!

love the blog. As a Bayern, newcastle United, and socceroos supporter I rely on my bavarian friends atoning for the many dissappointments football regularly brings me. I hope that enough has been done to make Bayern into a Champions League and Bundesliga double winner this year.Looking forward to game 1! Prost

what will LvG do if kroos, as hoped, impresses in robben's position? sweini and van bommel cant be dropped, that leaves 1 extra man, and seeing as how we need 1 out and out striker, who would be dropped?

Susie -
Glad to see the blog has been back up and running! It was sad to let our wonderful Mannschaft go, but, with a 'danke' and a massive round of applause, it is time to move on to league football.
I must comment on Bayern's back four this year... I did so after one of your blogs last year and find it amazing that Bayern have not tried to strengthen the defense a bit. I am an advocate of the youth system, but I feel like a solid central defender was almost a necessity. Badstuber is fantastic, but he is still quite young. Hopefully he will play the majority of the games in place of Demichelis, who is absolutely woeful.
As for van Buyten, I am willing to deal with his shortcomings as long as he is willing to put his head to the ball and score on some set pieces. Contento, Alaba, and Badstuber have quite the assignment this year.

It would have to be Kroos dropped. Ribery and Robben (when fit) have precedence. And, since Robben is fragile, Kroos would be a solid replacement in the second half to add another goal or solidify the midfield.
I would imagine Kroos will also serve as a starter in most cup games as well as a replacement for any exhausted/injured midfielders throughout the season. He probably won't like it, but I can't see it any other way.

good observation about robben. our wingers are rather fragile and kroos seems to be able to play well anywhere in mid. given olic is out for an unknown ammount of time its rather fortunate we didnt sell any of our strikers and that so many of our other plays can play forward

Lambic Peach---
I love to drink you!
And, at least Newcastle's back in top flight football! Something to be happy about...

Johann---
The text? Hilarious!
I'm in agreement with you on DvB. Only because he's good on set pieces.
Unfortunately, a great CB is very hard to come by. But, it's not like we don't have the coin to get a deal done... Grrrrrr. That's really the only hole we needed to fill this summer. Eh, perhaps something comes available in the winter transfer market. We'll just be biting our nails until then!

Johann and Niles---
I'm thinking van Gaal wants Kroos solely to play in the playmaker's spot. With Mueller, when all are back from injury, as the lone striker.
His original idea was to play Olic in Robben's spot, since Olic has played wing in the past--- keeping Mueller up front and center. But that all went out the window when Ivica got hurt.
When everyone is back, the starting 11 should look like this:
----------------------Butt--------------------------Lahm--------DvB----------Badstuber---Contento-------------MvB----------------Schweini------------Robben-------------Kroos---------------Ribery----------------------Mueller----------------------

Grrr...
That didn't format the way I wanted. But, I think you understand what I mean?

Unfortunately, ESPN3.com is not showing the game even though it said it would. A big letdown. What's most infuriating is that there is no comment or statement from ESPN, just silence.

y isnt espn3 showing it like they said they would!! ugh!!!!

Interesting, I thought ESPN had the rights to stream in the U.S. and obviously that's not working. Is it ok for an ESPN site to suggest a competitor or a pirate site?

Posted by niles on 08/20/2010
yea idk what was up with espn3, i got the 2nd half fine, maybe the little league world series was too important to have the 1st half idk. but a great game! our back 4, well 3, look like crap, esp dvb who seemed always at the half way line and a yard too slow. mid and forwards looked good, muller looks to have lost none of his form while kroos is filling in nicely in the playmaker role. ribbery seems like hes really trying to put his past behind him and he should be back to his best soon. sweini should be captain after another display of heart

Next time you don't see it in the Schedule window, just open up the player at some random event and then on the right, open up the "Featured Events" tab. That's how I got it to work and I watched the whole thing.

D that is what I must have done -- but I was able to get the Pokal match without problem earlier. Methinks it will time to sync without Olic or Robben. ? is -- is Klose is reborn after W Cup. Great goal by Schw to win in the clutch...

I love the versatility we have up front, especially in Mueller. Last year when he was playing his best early in the season he was playing on the right wing (notably when Robben was injured). He repeated that great form on the right for die Mannschaft. If Klose can keep his form high for awhile, I don't think we'll miss a beat during Olic and Robben's absences. Some more depth could have been purchased seeing as how we are competing in three tourneys again, and seeing as how Demifailis is on his way out, but all in all Bayern fans have reason to be very optimistic this year!
