Since the 3-0 win over Olympique Lyon to seal our place in the Champions League final in Madrid, and the 3-1 over Bochum last Saturday to essentially give us the Bundesliga title, I have pondered what to write. And thought. And agonized. And paced.
I’ve got nothing. I’m speechless.
I could write about Ivica Olic’s fabulous hat trick against a French side that looked like it could be hardly bothered to show up. I could write about Bayern still getting no amount of respect from the press, which widely stated that the Inter - Barcelona match should’ve been the final. I could - but it’s all been written about to death.
I could, also, write about Thomas Mueller’s hat trick on Saturday, coupled with Schalke’s loss to Werder Bremen, that has, for all intents and purposes, given us the Bundesliga title. (No one really thinks Schalke are going to score 18 on anyone, now, do they?) I could write about a back four, while porous at times, has stood up exactly when it needed to. (Mr. Lahm, you are mostly excused.)
I could write about how amazingly awesome the display by the fans in the Allianz Arena was! But, you’ve seen that yourselves. And how the other three teams tried, with varying degrees of success, to match us. Inter? Meh. Lyon? Insert joke about French waving flags here. Barca? Close, but no cigar.
Pack ma’s, indeed.
I could tell you that I cried when we beat Lyon. And then ran around my fair city for the rest of the night, brandishing shawls and a flag, emptying pubs of their Jaegermeister supply. And, I could tell you that on Saturday night, after the win against Bochum, I did it all again.
So, I could, I could, I could. But, I won’t.
As a - if I may be so bold to call myself - a writer, I relished the beginning of this season, with so many new signings and a new coach. There was much to write about, and so much hope! Hope laced, of course, with caution. Don’t expect too much. This system will take time to work itself out.
And so, the caution came to fruition with a spell in the middle where nothing seemed to be working. Thirteen points off the lead in the Bundesliga. Toni, Baumjohann, Braafheid? Loaned. Tymo, Klose, Gomez? Benched. Consecutive losses to Bordeaux in the Champions League group stages. And who, among us, didn’t think Louis van Gaal was about to get the axe?
This is where it all became difficult for me. It’s tough to write about your team when everything seems to be going against you.
And then the pivotal match against Juventus happened. With Bayern bereft of “Robbery”, no one gave us any hope. In Turin, LVG picked his men up… and demolished Juventus 4:1. That match will forever remain in my top 5 Bayern matches of all time.
So, it became easier and easier to write again. Clawing up the Bundesliga chart, squeezing our way through the Champions League, and beating Schalke to advance to the DFB Pokal final. These were exciting times! With hope restored!
And now, here we sit, upon the precipice of greatness. A team that wins a treble is one that is remembered for all time. (See: Manchester United ‘99, Barcelona ‘09.) Three matches left, three trophies to covet. I find myself just trying to drink it all in, to remember everything I can. From the matches I saw during the Oktoberfest, to the injury time winner I witnessed against United. All the lovely emails I have received; the unexpected sharing of passion, frustration, doubt and glory. It has all been amazing! And yes, has left me speechless.

Yes I hear you on that, they do not get respect. I don't understand why not, it's not like we are talking about Bochum. When you look at the finances, this is one of 4 or 5 richest clubs in the world, they have some of the best players in the world, a world class coach, they are hard working etc... Bayern went down hill after 2001 but they had no choice, it's partially that they wanted to build their own stadium and that costs money. Money they couldn't spend on players to strengthen the squad. Bayern did the right thing, they set themslves up for long term success through healthy finances. Now that England and the other major leagues are falling down to debt Bayern will be one of the few survivors. Look at Manu, look at Liverpool, look at Real borrowing like there is no tomorrow. Good luck paying that back with interest. Bayern 4Life.

Posted by Dan on 05/05/2010
One more thing. I really think Bayern is back and is going to be fighting for the CL title from now on. They might not win it this year but from now on they will be a major competitor every year, like Chelsea or Barca. Money is not flowing so freely anymore, and starting 2012 when stricter UEFA financial fair play regulations kick in, clubs like Real are not going to be able to be in debt up to their eyes and still play CL. Also, since taxes in Spain and England are now the same as in Germany, that will level the playing field even more.

I would also write about the fact that Bayern shouldn't even have progressed against Fiorentina after one of the worst/most scandalous refereeing decisions of all time.

Considering Fiorentina also scored an offside goal in the second leg, I'm not sure what you are talking about, Matt. Cancel them both out and Bayern still goes through.

One thing for sure: Many top clubs should take lesson from Bayern's success. Though Robben looks to be the key player the contribution of the other players is not less. To me the pair of S'tger and B'ml has been phenomenal. For the future: I would not be sad to let R'bry go. Letting T'ni go was a very good decision. There are a lot of players who can replace R'bry - my choice is A Hleb.

Bayern also has a bright future with their new up and coming academy prospects. Few teams in the CL play their own graduates and I cant wait to see what the Bayern youngsters will provide in the future. The future does look very bright indeed.

I think the only place you get to see Fiorentina fans these days are in Bayern sites and blogs.. Never seen such sore losers... My dear viola friends, you know your club's nothing but crap, but what have us to do with that ?..
You better concentrate on your own dirty SerieA... Cos you people are not even smelling Champions League football for some years from now...
Agree with you Susie... But who want respect from self-obsessed English press ?... They have no history .. Yet they seem to find some lame performance from some third class player to boast about.. Feel pity for them..
Viva BAYERN !!!!!
History in the making... Come on Bayernnnnnnnnn... Finish off those jugheads Intersex Milan ...

We have made the finals in every decade since 1970. Talk about consistency, reliability and good management, you talk about Bayern.
LVG said it best. Bayern is the best team he's every been associated with and mind you, he's been associated with some big clubs (Barcelona/Ajax).
Bayern uber Alles.

Posted by Bayern Love on 05/06/2010
It's sad Bayern doesn't get enough respect. All that childish talk about Bayern not deserving to go through is crap : we always find a way to win. This has just been a phenomenal year. If we win our 5th Champions League trophy, only Real Madrid and AC Milan has better total (Local & European Titles) ranking than Bayern. Let's not forget the bundesliga title winning percentage. But few football lovers and “experts” know or even talk about this. The English commentating of Bayern games in the champions league is just absolutely terribly horrific: ignorance is a bliss. Things changed a little bit when we beat ManU though; everyone started attacking Fergie. How could you lose to “a team like Bayern”. A lot of laughs I tell you lots of laughs. When Van Gaal leaves in at least 5 years he'll be hard to replace. Maybe "Magnificent Morinho" ;->

Despite the brillance of Robben, Schweini is still my player of the year. The move from wing to center did him nothing but good.
Roger---
I think we've found the perfect blend of success. We've got one of the strongest youth clubs in the world. Promoting players from within, mixed with a few top stars, seems to be working very well for us. :)

A very good writing indeed. As I am from Finland, I follow all the European leagues as a neutral (of course I have teams I like and don't, and mostly my teams aren't doing too well right now), but I must admire the German prudence in running the clubs and still being up there. It was also nice to see "surprises" this year from all over Europe in domestic and european competitions.
I'd have a well-run club win any time over ka-zillionaires, therefore I don't have too much sympathy for Chelsea, Real etc (imagine my joy when Spurs beat City). Man U is a club I like though for the continuity and the longevity, and although in debt, theirs is being managed the proper way.
But indeed I'm happy to see the generation 2010 Bayern in the final, and hoping there's also moe to come from German club teams in the new decade. And I'm happy there are 2 excellent writers keeping me posted on the past, present and future of the German game in you and Uli.

Bayern have been lucky in europe and don't deserve any respect (in europe) as far as i'm concerned even though they might end up being the european champions .As far as i'm concerned bayern's progress this season in europe (amongst others) is a proof that fifa needs to allow for technology in our game . football has changed and the referees can't keep up with it

Here's something to write/ponder: Bayern are better off without Ribery in the CL final.
Don't get me wrong--when he's on he's one of the 5 best players in the world, but with transfer speculation and scandal hanging over him--he's been off; sometimes awful. After the third goal at Old Trafford, he quit. Luckily, nothing came of the three instances where he completely refused to track back. (Yes, after Olic's goal he remembered how to run again, but he's the only one who needed reminding.) I don't think Ribery's foul is an instance of violent conduct, but it was cynical--cynical in a very unRibery way. The guy is dealing with a lot of off-the-field issues, and unfortunately home can't be much of a haven at the moment: hell hath no fury like a woman married to a man accused of an affair with an under-aged prostitute. He's an amazing player, but the moping around and the lashing out are manifestations of monstrous frustrations. I'll take Altintop now, and Ribery next year. He'll be there

And yes, he's admitted to the relationship, but says he didn't know how old she was. Sigh.

What a load of crap, seriously. Inter will mop up Bayern and I will come back here to silence I believe. This is not a consistent team and not being Italian, can still comment on the foul references. Fiorentina was robbed. They were by far the better team. But even so, going on to beat a ManU which was under par this year - a lot of luck for Bayern and will unravel on May 22.
I would also remind the Germans that when it comes to football it cannot match Italy at all. Just look at the CL titles, the World Cups won and also WC runners up and finals... Sounds like false bravado. Enjoy it while you can.
 |
Posted by Dan on 05/06/2010
hey Bosun you might get lucky some time but no team goes all the way to the finals with luck alone. Your hatred for Bayern is just making you blind to the fact. I don't know maybe they kicked your team out. There is no team that I remember that went to the finals in CL without luck, not ManU, not Barca, not Chelsea.
 |
Posted by Cali on 05/06/2010
I can understand why you are so mad Davey. You root for Italian teams and Bayern has, single-handedly, kicked out 2 Italian teams so far and Inter is next. They have single-handedly given the Bundesliga a 4th CL spot for the 2011-2012 season. But no reason for such hatred, leagues come up then they go back down, it is natural. Now it's Bundesliga's turn. Seria A will be back up in about 5 to 10 years.
 |
Posted by Mike on 05/06/2010
As far as the game against Manchester United goes, I think it is more fun to beat a team when they do not give you any respect. More fun to rub it in that way.

Agreed, you lifted the world cup once more than us.. But you got everything else completely wrong...
I don't have a thing for statistics.. Yet, i feel i had to do this..
Germany apparently are the only team to make it into the next round of every WC they played...
1) World Cup Achievements :-
11 semîs to Îtaly's 8...
7 finals to Italy's 6...
2) Euro cup :-
3 cups to Italy's 1
6 finals to Italy's
2
7 semis to Italy's 4...
3)
Olympics football:-
Germany 4 medals (1-1-2) to Italy's 3 (1-0-2)
4)Under 19 uefa
Germany 5 times champion, 7 runners-up..
Italy 2 titles, 6 runners up..
5) Under 20 fifa
Germany champions once, once second best..
Italy A BIG ZERO...
What you make out of these, bud ?...
NOW SHUT THE F**K UP !!!
Moral of the story :- just because you're ignorant, you cannot go on barking... Sometimes you'll get screwed up like this..
The Bottomline :-
GERMANY WAS AND WILL BE A BIGGER FORCE THAN ITALY IN FOOOOOTBAAAALL.. Lol

Susie:
Same here in Hong Kong.
The writers of soccer magazines or betting pundits _always_ rooted against Bayern (without any convincing reason)... or against Germany when it comes to Euros or World Cups.
When it's Bayern against Man U, they'll say Man U will win. And after Bayern kick Man U out, they'll say Bayern's next opponents will win. The same goes on when Germany is playing England, they'll say England will win. And after England was dumped out, they'll say Germany's opponents will win. And so on.
Hong Kong inherited a lot from England, including the bias against German teams.

Do not forget this:
Fiorentina was litterally robbed and they were by far the better team than Bayern Munchen.
Also
The route of Inter Milan to the final was a lot more difficult than Bayern. Bayern would have no chance vs Barcelona.
Finally:
Inter is a better team than the Germans.

now, some feel it is their mandate to show us histories of certain clubs and their achievements...plizz, spare us the bull, basically we arent interested, we dont live in the past, we live in the present, we battle for the future and so if u got so many accolades in the past and arent being much currently...take your pretty statistics to the museum....BAYERN MUNICH, thank you for crashing man u....was orgasmistic

I am not a fan of ManUtd but I always had respect for Sir Alex until he made a comment on the second leg of the match. His comments proves that he is a sort of a racist. "The tag: typical germans does not make sense in any way". I am quite surprised why the media did not condemn such remarks. He should be stripped of his OBE.

Great article
Anish -
about the statistics, you missed one very important thing.
17100 + telephone calls from the calciopoli scandal were missed by mistake.
Italians make mistakes like that.
Juventus got relegated because of that.
3 matches to go. [actually 2]

let Barca come at Bayern with a squad similarly depleted to the squad Bayern had for that match.

Hey Susie
Great article. I am an Inter fan and cant wait to grapple Bayern in the CL final. I have maximum respect for Bayerns fans and history, they have always been great supporters and love the game. It will be a nice change from when we played Barca whose fans have to rate amongst the saddest, most bitter and arrogant in the game, anyway enough about that! It is exciting that both Bayern and Inter will be possibly challenging for a treble in the final, they have both got a little luck to get to where they are but you need luck in a knockout tournament. I think Inter will edge it but with Robban playing the way he is it cuold go either way!
I have to also thank you for taking out Juve earlier in the campaign too! As a fan of Inter but not the Italian game I have to say it is nice to play in a competition that is fair and balanced!
Good luck on the 22nd and may the best team win!

LVG said from day 1 that "this system will take time to learn. The possession style of play time to impliment. Winning the Champions League is the ulimate goal but we are 3 years removed from being there. I hope Bayern will have me until then". Mind you, this was said in November prior to December's resurgence and when Bayern were at their lowest.
Cut to now.... holy sh*te! What a transformation!
It has truly been amazing to watch! The Pokal is next, and the CL final is simply the icing on the cake.
Perhaps Ribery has finally gotten what he wished all along? And hopefully he can see the support the organization has had for his unpredictable year.
The inspiration of watching Bayern dominate a Lyon team with only 10 men was beautiful. That and seeing SAF find any excuse necessary to placate his getting bounced out of the CL. "Typical Germans" and all. LOL.

Nice Article Susie
I am impressed of LVG work at Bayern and how Bayern overcame its early struggles when they played out of form.
I also like how LVG is using Contento and Muller and is not affraid using them in big matches.
Bayern is an excellent club that is well managed.
Good luck on May 22nd against Inter. Inter will be favored but I dont think anyone can stop Robben for 90 minutes legally.

those were some fantastic facts. i think they will keep davey silent for a long long time. maybe right till may 22!! :) n hopefully till next year's CL final.
>Susie
awesome as always.
>To all those who are pointing at Klose's offside goal
last year Barcelona won the champion's league final after winning against Chelsea, who although did not play "beautiful" football, had their tactics spot on and had kept the Barca guns silent for 170 mins. Chelsea lost due to a referee who failed to spot blatant handballs in the box and penalty shouts. Nobody at that time said that Barca were lucky. This is football and the referees are human. If technology was used, we'd have a very different set of results in a lot of different games.
 |
Posted by harshad on 05/07/2010
i think its very SAF like from all those whiners. blame the ref. blame the pitch. blame the weather. blame every thing you set your eyes on. but never ever have the honesty and the courage to admit that ManU had a bad game. if he goes on like dis, he'll be blaming Martians for ManU losing a game next.

This is the difference between German and Italian fans. The likes of Dortmund or Schalke fans would never gloat on Bayern's success in Europe. Italian fans, on the other hand, would gloat on Inter's Champions League glory even though they booed the crap out of Mourinho and the Nerazzuris back in Serie A. All those so-called Milan, Juve, & Roma fans, shame on you!! Face it, you all know who you are. A sudden change of heart or purely hypocrisy? You're all willing to cheer on a hated "Italian" team even without an Italian in the starting line-up now while you jeered them so much back home. Just a season ago, Bayern had more Italians, Toni & Oddo, than "your" Inter's starters. Just a few years ago, everyone in Italy was a Milanista. Before calcio poli, everyone was a Juve fan. No wonder Mourinho has enough of Italy and he will no doubt move on to something better. I mean he can't do any worse, really!!

Shekhar and Sam, go screw yourselves. but anyways, I think Bayern have what it takes to win the cl.I think Eto'o and Milito are awsome (skillwise), but all it wil take is one amazing Robben goal to win the game. the final will be very high scoring and fun to watch, even if inter are very defensive. I want to see Mourinho sit there and cry after his ego and self esteem have been shattered. Bayern Munchen will win.

Susie, great article! I have been a Bayern fan for the past 15 yrs, lived in Germany and followed the Bundesliga and the Mannschaft all along. There is no other league like the Bundesliga and no club like Bayern. Man U and Sir Alex are sore bloody losers as are all the English press as well and so called experts! What have the English ever won... Bunch of bloody losers, they should be ashamed of mentioning their own name in the same breath as the great Germans! Bayern will beat Inter and for the next many years, will lift a few more CL trophies! All credit to VG for trusting the developing the super young talent at Bayern! Forza Bayern! Forza Deutschland!

Bayern are a great team, and they have always been one. Question this and you are officially a soccer idiot.
Thank you for the article Susie, and you need to promise us another one after Bayern win on the 22nd.

Susie,
Great article, congrats on your boys winning the first of three titles! I was in Amsterdam when Herr Van Gall won with Ajax. Only qustion - what do you meaning about drinking Jagermeister? No self respecting German would drink that crap might as well get Unterberg! How about a real schnapps like Williams? Cheers, Bill

The final is on 22nd May but many have predicts that Inter have won without a fight. These 2 teams have not faced each other in recent times. It would be a fantastic final as their coaches are tactically great. If Mourihno claimed to be master himself. LVG is Master in his own rights. It is final and one game off. There won't be a second leg for turnover. With dull football Inter playing as a football fan, I would choose to support Bayern in the final.
Go Bayern and show some German spirits....

It has been the most unexpected of seasons. I just hope the ghosts of 99 dont come back and all we win in the league. Though i promise u even if we win the treble the press will still say we r just lucky. Y can ppl lean from Barcelona's example and simply pay homage to the team that wins like guardiola said of inter. Such class. I get nothing but abuse at the irish pub a frequent for my footie, but its part of the fun being so underestimated in worldfootball (though not in germany)
Let honour and glory reign over munich!!!
WIR SIND BAYERN!(i prefer the standard german to bavarian as blasphamous as it sounds)

Bill---
I'm saving the Feuerkirsch for this weekend, I hope. And I'll be in Madrid for the final. So, Rioja it is!
I started drinking Jaeger when I was, like, 11. one of my uncles used to bring it over from Germany when he stayed with us. I'm kinda used to it by now... :)
