It would be disingenuous of me to complain about Franck Ribery’s red card when, throughout this Champions League campaign, other calls have gone our way. (That’s stating the painfully obvious, innit?) However, if you were to ask what I honestly thought? Now that my lager-fueled, conveniently blind Bayern loyalism has subsided? I would opine that the reds handed out, on both sides of the field, at the Allianz Arena, Wednesday night, were a bit harsh.

Yes, Franck went over the top of the ball, but I do not think with malicious intent. Had it been malicious--- Lisandro Lopez would have suffered a broken leg. Franck’s never been the most adroit tackler, so I’m chalking this one up to being a stupid mistake. But, it is easy for all of us armchair referees and managers to sit and judge, for we have the luxury of replay from every possible angle. Much more difficult, I would think, to make a snap decision, on the pitch, surrounded by close to 70 thousand people, who may or may not, want to do you bodily injury.

And, perhaps the second yellow, given to Lyon’s Toulalan was compensation for the straight red shown to Ribery? Eh, I’ll never know what’s in a zebra’s mind…

Now, we must wait for the UEFA disciplinary tribunal, due to meet the day after next week’s semi-final matches, to see what punishment will be given out. Hopefully, Franck will just have to sit out the leg in Lyon, and will be available for the final.

This season, with Bayern, you never know what performance you’re going to get with our back four. I have alternately wanted to kiss them and strangle them all year. Kisses all around for this match, I think, despite a few shaky passes on van Buyten’s part. Demichelis, the phantom unmasked, had his best start this year. Phillip Lahm, with the captain’s armband on, was a fabulous complement to Robben’s flank. And, Holger Badstuber will be hard pressed to start again after the performance Contento dished out. Contento easily out-paces Badstuber--- who was never a true wing-back in the first place.

Up front, there wasn’t a whole lot of finish as Mueller, Gomez and Olic missed absolute sitters. The score easily could’ve been 4:0, even with Bayern being a man down for part of the match. Olic works very hard, no one is questioning his ethic. However, in a Champions League semi-final? You have to deliver on the opportunities you’re being presented with. Mario Gomez continues to be a disappointment, although for me it’s not so surprising. His record Bundesliga transfer, from Stuttgart, was based on a gaudy goal total where he was their only option. He also infuriates me when he plays for die Mannschaft: Evidenced by my Euro ‘08 blog, in which I basically trashed him for an entire month.

I can wax poetic about Bastian Schweinsteiger. The man is just incredible! He was everywhere and anywhere he needed to be, easily out-distancing everyone else on the pitch. I’m glad to see the up-tick in his form, going in to this summer’s World Cup. And, I heartily wished he would’ve scored a goal.

But, of course… once again… the man of the match, the savior of the season, the “Tulpen aus Amsterdam”, the Bundesliga’s MVP, the shiny-headed Dutchman is: Arjen Robben. Or, as I like to say Arjen $#%&!#@ Robben!!!! Yes, with all of those exclamation points. His 25-yard rocket, slightly misdirected by Thomas Mueller’s hair was, again (!), die Roten’s saving grace. When I look back on this year, after it’s all done, I will be forever marveling at his ability to single-handedly change a match.

I was perplexed, however, as was Mr. Robben, by van Gaal’s decision to sub for him in the 85th minute. I definitely felt he had another goal in him, and I desperately wanted a two-goal cushion heading in to next Tuesday’s return tie. As soon as Altintop was in, the entire dynamic of the game changed. We stopped pressing forward, and I squirmed around uncomfortably until the final whistle blew.

Wow. What else can I say? I’m fairly confident in our ability to score away goals, which leaves Lyon having to hang 3 on us Tuesday to go through. Now, I haven’t booked tickets to Madrid just yet… but the travel websites are open and waiting for me to click “submit”…

Susie.. Great article as usual.. but you should've mentioned that Franck Ribery was the best bayern player before getting the red card! Tymoschuck and pranjic were also great!
Thanks god we have Robben, but as long as Ribery is fit, i'm sure he'd contribute to the team in the same way as robben.

Susie -

I couldn't agree with you more about taking Arjen Robben off. Although I can understand what van Gaal was thinking, I also believe that every Bayern fan out there would have pinned Robben for another. The entire complexion of the team changes with the two wingers out.

I am looking forward to the return of our glorious and esteemed leader MvB for the away leg, and I hope that having to give the armband back doesn't mean Lahm won't continue with his glorious advances from the back.

As for Ribery, I am hopeful that he will not suffer further repercussions because of his tackle, but one can never be sure. I probably would also have given a red card, but if it was not malicious I don't see why he should serve anything more than the obligatory one match ban.

Moenchengladbach Morgen. Wenn ich mich recht erinnere, spielen die Roten auch in der Bundesliga... Bayern vor, noch ein Tor!!!

One more thing I want point out is coach LVG: I loved that move when he subbed Tymoshchuk on with 10-man and pushed Schweini up front - it was brilliant! I never felt it was 10 vs. 11 during those 15 minutes. And, he let Robben know he was the boss, you agree or not with his decision. FC Hollywood needs a man like him, we have talent. A system will bring up to glorious. Let my dream continue...

Hey Susie I agree with everything you said but one thing: Other calls went our way. In every match some decisions go your way some don't, fair or not aside. Before I went to meet up with friends to watch the game I told myself that no matter what the referee does to Bayern I will stay calm and not complain. However, this ref is no better than Ovrebo. Ribery didn't injure anybody nor was it malicious intent as anybody could see, he was just going for the ball for crying out loud and he hit his opponent. This is football, not chess, people get pushed and hit but there were no broken legs or anything of that nature. Even the ref, while talking to the Italian media, admitted that the red was harsh. And the red for Toulanan was just him compensating for taking our player out. Keep up the good work from an almost 20 year Bayern vet.

Well written, Susie.. Though i have a different perspective on Mario.. I felt your same emotions during Euro 08 and i agree, he misses quite a bit of sitters.. Yet, i regard him as world class.. And i believe he'll show his Super-Mario qualities in South Africa.. And i desparately want him and Poldi to show some form immediately.. So that Jogi Loew can remain calm and make the right decision - to trash Kuranyi.. I hate that man as much as i love Schweini..

Then again, congrats all FCB fans.. We are in the doorstep of european greatness again !!!.. Just have to finish atleast 10 % of the chances we create... Hope for a historic Teusday...

Ole Super FCB...

I still wonder why cant we see this line up:
Butt
Contento-Demicheli-Van Buyten-Lahm
Schweinteiger-Van Bommel-Tymochuk
Ribery-Robben
Olic

Posted by Marco on 04/26/2010

van Gaal took Robben out because he knows that Robben's made of crystal.

Great stuff from Bayern in the first leg...Could easily have ended up 4-0...Need to really put in the chances that come our way. This is the champions league you can easily get punished for missed chances.Still I hope for a Bayern victory on Tuesday.Go Bayern Go!!

Posted by Anish on 04/27/2010

Yeah, Joe.. Correct.. Have to pounce on our chances; which we will be creating most definitely...

Ribery Red was absolutely the right call. He tackled over the ball intentionally. Do you really believe that someone with the close control that he has cannot control his foot in a tackle? He was lucky not to break that guy's leg. Toulalan red was also the right call but I don't think it was a straight red. Taking Robben off was always the plan as soon as it was possible. Van Gaal has said Robben is fatigued and he needs him for the rest of the season.

It's good that Bayern has a player like Robben. He is almost eaquel to Messi, if he is without injuries. With best wishes

Posted by HASSAN 'KIPANYA' on 05/06/2010

surely we gonna miss Ribery in the CL, but i believe Bayern is not a one man show, we have a good players, and the way they have been played the last 2 games, already its give us FANS the green light we gonna clinch this titles, GO! GO! GO! BAYERN......TEAM KUBWA....

BAYERN 4 LIFE....

Posted by Shekhar on 05/07/2010

I am a Die Hard Bayern Fan, but i still think Ribery's tackle was worth a straight red.

as for Robben being taken off, i think LVG did the right thing. Robben was trying too hard. I was relieved to see him taken off as i felt one of 2 things could have happened.
1> Robben gets injured.
2> Robben gets booked.
