The short version of this blog would be:

First half: Yay! And then 40 minutes of #%^$$&#!!#$#$!@@#$#$$!!!!

Second half: Ah, that’s much better…

Billed as David versus Goliath, Wednesday’s DFB Pokal quarter-final match had Bayern pitted against, giant-killers, Gruether Fuerth. Personally, I think a “David” team would be someone a bit further down in the 2. Bundesliga standings. Like, say, 1860, perhaps?

After an early goal by Thomas Mueller, Bayern seemed uncharacteristically out of sorts. The snow on the pitch made for inconsistent passing. The midfield seemed lost without the cohesive play of Bastian Schweinsteiger and Mark van Bommel. And, although I generally stick up for Martin Demichelis, he was… what’s the word I’m looking for… oh, horrible.

Greuther Fuerth came to play ball. Aggressive coverage and hard running confounded die Roten, as Fuerth leveled the score ten minutes in, came up with half a dozen other scoring chances, and then went up 2-1 in the 40th minute on a goal by Allagui that most certainly should’ve been saved by Michael Rensing.

I can only imagine what van Gaal said to his squad in the dressing room at half-time. It probably mirrored what I was yelling at my monitor over 40 minutes. Which, by the way, had my mother in stitches while she corrected my shoddy German grammar.

“Naturally, I was very angry at half-time. There’s no second chance in a cup tie. If you lose, you’re out, and we didn’t want that,” said the coach.

A completely different FCB came out for the second 45 minutes as Arjen Robben scored from the Elfmeter, Ribery netted at 61 minutes, and Lahm completed the barrage at 65 minutes. Add on the second half of Mueller’s brace and an Allagui own goal, saw the final 6-2. A deceiving final score, as it was not as easy as the numbers show.

And, finally, what’s with Ribery hugging his agent after scoring? This is the man who has been trying to get him to leave Bayern for over a year. A poor choice by the Frenchman, I think, as the tides have started to turn against him and will continue to do so. Eh, we’ll take Kroos back and 50-some-odd million for you, Franck. And our form will not suffer because of it.

Rensing and Demichelis we're absolutely shocking on the whole. Maybe Martin's worst display since he tripped over himself to allow a goal during that Dortmund game. Demichelis seems to really get exposed when there isn't a good keeper behind him, last year was his worse year for Bayern I think, most of which was played with Rensing in goal. there is no doubt in my mind now that Badstuber is a better choice as the other central defender, that is if we can find a left back with some confidence and experience(lets get Contento on loan ASAP).

Bright spot in the game for me was David Alaba, looked REALLY good once he came on, good passing instincts, and set up Ribery's goal. He looks like he might be in this team sooner rather than later, and gives another option for when Frank leaves as he plays on the left side of midfield as well. Between him and Kroos, I am getting more and more confident about our team once Fabulous Frank leaves us.

Graham---

Demichelis was shocking. And he's normally a footballer I'd stick up for. And although I feel Rensing's had some crappy luck, there's no excuse for the second Fuerth goal.

Susie, I've been reading your columns and they're great! But, I must disagree with a little on Franck. I think we've forgotten a little, how good he really is. We shouldn't forget what Franck being on the field does to our opponents. They respect him, and they're somewhat scared of his ability. I don't think they would have the same hesitation to Kroos.

Also, Is Van Bommel that much better than Tymoschuck, or is Van Bommel just on the field because he's the captain? I haven't got to see much of Tymo this season.

Tchuß!

Nick---

Trust me, I haven't forgotten how spectacular he is... but, that statement comes with a caveat.

I think, on the whole, he's more a distraction to the team than not.

And if van Gaal is going to let the fans speak out, I can guarantee you that they'd prefer a German in that slot.

Topic - Ribery
I have to agree with Susie. The best thing Van Gaal has done this year is gotten this team out of its reliance on Ribery. That may be due to Ribery's injuries, but it is a good thing. Last season the entire offense went through him. I watched the last game of the season against Stuttgart fromt the third tier, and it seemed that Bayern tried to get the ball to him every time down the field. The team is much more dangerous this year with or without Ribery on the field than they were last year. If he wants to leave, then I think Kroos will be just fine. He was Kicker's player of the month in December and January. Obviously, if Ribery stays then that is great too, but I would not worry too much. If he wants to go, and Chelsea or whoever want to (over)pay, then I'd say later.
