Jordi Alba has finally achieved his dream of coming back to Barcelona. After months of negotiations, the Cules have agreed to pay Valencia a total of €14m despite the fact that Alba only had 12 months left in his contract. Some argue paying that much for a player who would have been free next summer is a waste of money. Keep reading to find out why they are wrong.

1. Jordi Alba Is Ready For The Big Time

Despite having made 109 appearances for Valencia, Jordi Alba was relatively unknown to the wider public before the Euro 2012 championship. His speedy runs, passionate defending and generous effort have allowed the Catalan Roadrunner to jump into the European football spotlight, making him one of the most influential players in the whole tournament.

In La Liga, the economic power and successful history of Barcelona and Real Madrid is such that it is only natural that most players who are selected for the national team come from the Top 2 teams. As a result, players from other clubs must be outstanding to be selected for the squad.

The fact that Jordi Alba has replaced Joan Capdevila and established himself as Spain's first choice left-back in such a short amount of time (He's only played 10 matches for La Roja) is a clear indication that he has the skills to succeed at the highest level.

2. Jordi Alba Attracted Offers From The European Elite

Jordi Alba has performed at such an impressive level in Euro 2012 that it was obvious that many clubs around Europe would be interested in signing him - with Manchester United being the most insistent admirers.

Fortunately for us, the Barcelona representatives started negotiations with Valencia many months ago and were way ahead of the pack. Ideally, I would have liked Sandro Rosell to close the deal before the big tournament started but I believe 14M€ for the 23 year-old star is a fair price considering the Catalan left-back's potential.

I am fully aware that Jordi Alba could have been signed for free next summer but waiting a whole season would have caused unnecessary drama between Barcelona, Valencia, the agents, the media and (who knows?) perhaps Manchester United, Chelsea, City or PSG - who are all much richer clubs than the Catalans anyway.

3. The Connection With Andres Iniesta

Andres Iniesta is, together with Lionel Messi and Xavi Hernandez, the engine that makes Barcelona work. His creativity and ability to read the game is second-to-none in world football. Don Andres is one of those leaders who make players around him even better.

I must say I have thoroughly enjoyed seeing how Jordi Alba has gelled with Iniesta while on national duty with Spain. Their constant plays, quick passing and smart interchanges from the left wing have definitely been one of my Euro 2012 highlights. The pair have been unstoppable and, watching them, one may think they have played together for years.

I honestly can't wait to see what the Iniesta-Alba connection can add to Tito Vilanova's squad next season!

4. Jordi Alba Knows The Barcelona Philosophy Already

Jordi Alba signed for the Barcelona academy at a very early age but was released by the club in 2005. While you can argue that was a costly mistake, it also enabled the player to grow as a footballer in teams such as Cornella, Nastic Tarragona or Valencia.

In a way, it feels like a repeat of the Cesc / Pique story all over again: A player who learns the basic skills and Barcelona formation at La Masia, grows as a player elsewhere and ends up coming back to the Camp Nou after we pay a very hefty transfer fee.

I am aware that, to outsiders, this may not sound like a good business strategy but, honestly, the quality in the Barcelona youth ranks is such that there is simply no room for everyone.

Credit to Jordi Alba for turning what could have been the end of his career into a positive - Success only comes as a result of determination and endless hours of training.

jordi%20alba%20barcelona%20sign%202012%202013%20valencia%20barcelona%20barcablog%20barca%20blog%20barcelona%20jordi%20alba%20barcelona%20sign%202012%202013%20valencia%20barcelona%20barcablog%20barca%20blog%20barcelona%20f%20x.jpg

5. Barcelona Desperately Needed A Left-Back

Tito Vilanova was right to prioritize the signing of a quality left-back this summer. Sadly, Barcelona are still unsure of when Eric Abidal will come back to the team (if he ever does) and, let's face it, Adriano is more of a reliable backup than a regular starter. I am aware Muniesa will join the Barcelona first team this summer but he will have to earn his playing time gradually.

I am certain Jordi Alba can use his exceptional speed, strength and passing flair to become one of Barcelona's greats. At just 23 years of age, the Catalan Roadrunner can become our left-footed Dani Alves.

Welcome back, Jordi!!!

I didn't favor Alba's move because he was too attacking, but as long as Vilanova can work things out like Del Bosque did with Spain, Alba will do very well, I am convinced he will succeed after watching him at the Euros. The only real concern is the development of Marc Muniesa, & Alba will prevent him to play more often, even though Muniesa is still a center back. But I agree what you said, he should play gradually since he's still pretty young.

Posted by Tujageidam on 06/29/2012

well jodi alba wish you success in our fellow football club fc.barca.

Posted by steven vinecnt on 06/29/2012

to me it a good buy. i dont want to know other people will say. i have watch him played in European championship i think is one of the best left back in the world

Posted by ziyad alam on 06/29/2012

i feel this signing is a complete waste of money.. we already have a very attacking philosphy and dont need another attacker, especially not in a defensive position!!!

Our main aim is to strengthen our defense n not to make it weaker people. Mark my words, alba will turn out to be a horrible signing. he is short, not good defensively n most of the time he will be caught up field. The reason he plays well in national team is becuase they paly with 2 defensive minded midfielders - sergio n alonso.

We should be buying great players n not good players. We can buy 20 players in the 40million allocated to us but I would rather go for 1 great player. Look at the time when we did a clean sweep to win all 3 major competitions. We had a small squad of great players. We have got likes of keita, adriano,n others that can fill LB. We need another abidal whoz defensive not another Dani alves. Its the balance that will make us click. We should b spending the 40m on T.Sliva n Lorris n not alba!!!

definetely Barca need speedy leftback, so they choose correct player correct time, welcome Jordi Alba to barca and the home

Posted by Smiler on 06/30/2012

He's definately what we've needed. Sentiment aside, we've struggled at left back for a couple of seasons. As the article points out, his understanding with Iniesta is going to cause a lot of problems for domestic and CL defences next season and gives balance to the left hand side.

Jordi alba rgiht signing i beleive he we make in barcelona what nest for barcelona now is to buy a crative striker like facao or prince boteng and they need one sentral defence lik of chesea devid liuz if they want to collect the la liga back in the coming season becuose if barcelona buy crative striker and entral difence leo messi was sent as an angel to barcelona and he as diliver a litle out his talent for barcelona if they make happey by add some crative striker with him in the front he we diliver to the extent that we make barcelona rival to some alegetion against if enemy dont sosheed in that they we be looking for his dead

Posted by Joshua on 06/30/2012

Jordi Alba is a great signing. Those who are saying that he is more of attacking, i dont agree with you. It all depends on the coach. The coach can decide to mke him full back and that will strenghthen the defence. The player is good and can partener with iniesta and assist de defence as well. To me he is a great signin. He is welcome. We just need to buy another centre back and that wil be ok. I will plead will our leaders to force and buy a great centre back even if it will cost huge amount of money because we surely need to make our defence strong next season. Thanks.

Posted by Isuwa nelson on 06/30/2012

Alba is a great signing but let find another center defense. Barcelona rules.

Posted by Stewie Castillo on 07/01/2012

That move was a superb all barcelona needs to do is to get another striker as a backup just in case something bad happens again like the villa incident. great move overall though.if anything barcelona should get Rooney or baloteni or mario gomez ? idk lets see what they do.

Posted by james on 07/01/2012

welcome jordi alba. i think that barca should have bought another forward, since sanchez ended up not being all that efffective.

Posted by kay on 07/01/2012

i have been observing this player with valencia for the past 2 years ad he has always impressed whenever playing against barca...he would always be a source of threat to barca's defense...and i always thought that if barca could buy this guy then they should go for him and after seeing the way he linked up with iniesta during the euros i was amazed and i was hoping that barca would move fast and bring him bfore any other team does...and thank god they did..now barca would have a good offensive left side and that would bring some other new dimension to thier tiki taka...dont get me wrong i love abidal to death but to be honest he is ok offensivly...we had a deadly combination on the right side (messi+alvez) and now we have a deadly left side as well (iniesta+alba)...looking forward to the start of the new season...hope we do win the triple this year...and make history the year after by bieng the 1st team to retain the UEFA champions league...forca barc

Posted by husam on 07/01/2012

I was praying that Alba signs for Barca. Imagine oponents not knowing the attacking side , imagine when oponents all stay at their half like chelsea or mourrinhu inter. of course it needs Tito to have good control. I also noticed that most of the goals on barca were from the left side after Abi left. We need nobody else as Iniesta and Pedro finally regained the dreadful form.

Posted by Ejike Kyrian on 07/01/2012

Barcelona gettings Jordi Alba this summer, will be the greatest signing of the summer. All Barca have to do again is to sign another striker, since Sanchez is not that effective.

Posted by Francis Paloma on 07/02/2012

Jordi Alba is a great option and wise choice of Barcelona. the next wise choice would be buying Hugo Lloris because not only Lloris is a world class goalkeeper and one of the best in the world right but he's still young. Lyon will only sell Llori if the price is right so i hope Barca we'll be doing that, if so then barca will have a perfect eleven on their team with lloris, alves, pique, mascherano, alba, xavi, iniesta, sanchez, villa, and messi!!! who now can beat barca

I am from Indonesia and I could say that Jordi Alba started to gain many fans here. Thousands of Barcelona fans in Indonesia are pleased with the contract Barcelona made with Alba. Not many of our people know him before Euro 2012, we believe that he is such a great and talented player ever exist in this era. Great!

Jordi Alba is first priority signing. He is fast, good in atking as well as defending. Now just imagine Alves and Alba
bombard the right flank and left flank respectively !!!

Posted by tindo on 07/03/2012

This is what needs at the moment,Alba is a great player. He will make history at Barca

Posted by Francis Paloma on 07/04/2012

now that jordi alba is a barca player now its the time to make a bid for Hugo Lloris,.,. please barcelona u need Lloris!! Lloris is far way better than valdes,. if they want to have a solid team then they need Lloris,., they are asking for 20 million Euros,., barcelona have money to spen like that,., the spend 14 million already for alba,., so there's room for Lloris,., i really hope they can finalize a move before the end of the transfer season,.,

Posted by arieyanto on 07/04/2012

welcome to barca jordi alba.barcelona its my favorite so i'll give my heart to everybody in barcelona...i love them.

Posted by Nate Pratt on 07/05/2012

Good signing for sure, even at $14m. I understand the concern on his defending and how he likes to come up and support the attack. But his speed makes up for that. He defended great against the best in Europe, and will only grow to be a better defender. He fits Tito's system perfect, meshes very well with the midfield and will add to the attack from the wing nicely. I dare say that there might not be a better RB/LB combo in Liga next season. Now hopefully Rosell can get us a CB with just as much talent and potential. Remember people this is FCB, we don't sign players because they are big names, we sign them because the fit with our system.

Posted by Masumbuko Peter on 07/05/2012

Jordi is the best left back and ithink he will be much better at barcelona.I real love barcelona fc

Posted by snipe on 07/05/2012

the one n only problem of darling team 4 now is goalkeeping, solving this 'll make our team unbeatable in the world please try 2 solve that!!!

Posted by Najim on 07/06/2012

Barcelona need the followings:
(1) A better goal keeper
(2) A central back defender
(3)A better right back than Dani Alves who is not really good in crossing out the ball from the flank
(4)Give Alexis Sanchex chance to be a permanent number 9 striker, and let Messi be number 10 just like Ronaldinho and Eto'o were. We cannot continue relying completely on Messi...he might have his off days at times just like the penalty against Chelsea
(5) Messi should stop being too forward in penalty kicks taking. We should have a standing 9 like Sanchex to be taking it at times too....Good luck to us all barca fans

Posted by bagumacollin on 07/06/2012

A left back is indeed what we needed, but we should also find cover for Puyol. He's been a terrific servant, but I can see him playing less due to injuries etc.We cant expect him to heal as quickly as he would have say 5 yrs ago.So that's another priority,a top CB.Pique,as good as he is,always looks like he needs a leader beside him, like Puyol or Ramos when with Spain.Back to Alba then,he looked good in the EUROs no doubt, but so did Ramos(hahaha)and Arbeloa(AHAHAHAH)Jokes aside,I'm not sure he's gonna be as reliable as the LBs we've had previously, but he dont look a bad signing(at the moment)Good point about how he combines well with Iniesta, but it's when we need to defend a lead is when we will likely see how good he is.Besides that,we dont really need any reinformcements, but it'll be foolish to think that Xavi,Puyol,Alves, and a few more will be around for more than 2 seasons left. The grooming needs to be done now,so the intergration will be seamless when required.

Posted by Idoko Samuel on 07/06/2012

I think Jordi Alba's signing is a good one. Though Adriano is a good player too, but we need an experience featured player to be helping France featured Abidal at least. Up Barca

Posted by mami chula on 07/06/2012

i would have preffered them buying torres.

Posted by FCB MIAMI on 07/06/2012

Jordi Alba is the perfect player for Barcelona... I know some have defensive concerns.. but Alba is a good defender that has a key skills to defend with Barcelona SPEED!! Barcelona suffers defensive blunders when they can't catch up to the counter... Albas speed will help with this.

On the attacking side, he is amazing for a Left back, I remember watching him as a kid and he played the forward position, he finishes like a N. 9. THe issue was always his size... but Barcelona has proven that the little guys (Messi, Xavi, Iniesta and now Alba) can win it all. Now we need a good CB + a CF that can head!!

Visca Barça + Visca Catalunya!!!!

Posted by Anonymous on 07/06/2012

Barca should definitely buy a goalkeeper

Posted by Joe on 07/06/2012

Jordi is good but we need more from Barcelona...there are many players out there come on do something...sign RVP...Drogba...Neymar...come on FCB is the best team ever and I would love to see my favorite players with the king messy and the rest of the team...
