Barcelona
Posted by Isaiah Cambron on 07/18/2010

Hello and welcome to the new Barcelona Correspondents page here at Soccernet. The Powers That Be at the Worldwide Leader have been kind enough to allow my humble voice to be projected here for the foreseeable future. I'll obviously be talking about all things FC Barcelona with a smattering of league-wide thoughts.

I've been blogging about Barcelona for more than 3 years now and am currently a writer over at Barcelona Football Blog where I cover upcoming matches and occasionally dabble in editorial pieces. Here at ESPN I'll be covering some of the more mundane things, like results, injuries, transfers, etc. Did I say mundane? I meant the reason I wake up in the morning.

As a member of the club and as a fan, I find it important to cover both the sporting and political/business aspects of Barça, so from time-to-time I'll also be discussing what goes on behind-the-scenes in the front office as well as diving into discussions of the youth development system, both of which are vital to the club's present title defense and future endeavors.

Transfers are, of course, the main topic of the day, so here's a brief overview of what's happened so far this summer:

In:
David Villa: a 28-year old striker, purchased for €40m from fellow La Liga squad Valencia. If his previous domestic form and World Cup showing is anything to go on, he'll have a tremendous year. His inclusion leaves Pep Guardiola with that most wonderful of headaches: who to start up top?

Adriano: a 25-year old wingback who can also step up into the midfield, he comes from Sevilla FC with a €9.5m price tag along with a reported €4m in performance-based variables. The expectation is that he'll be backing up Dani Alves most of the time, though he'll also be able to play on the left wing behind Eric Abidal and Maxwell if they're not fit. Expect to see Adriano mostly in Copa del Rey matches at the beginning.

Out:
Yaya Touré: The Ivorian defensive midfielder leaves us for Manchester City in a €30m move (€24m to the club, €6 to his agent) after 3 years of service. He won 2 La Liga titles, a Champions League, a Copa del Rey, and a Club World Cup with us. His departure cements Sergio Busquets as the squad's first choice defensive midfielder and leaves the door open for a transfer target.

Dmytro Chygrynskiy: I think I just learned how to spell his name correctly and he's sold back to Shakhtar Donetsk after a year in blaugrana. His original price tag (€25m) never fit his involvement (14 total appearances) and now that he's been sold for €15m, he'll more-than-likely be considered a massive failure for the club despite never having been given a true shot at coming good on his potential. His departure does, however, open up space for the potential rise of various canteranos such as Marc Bartra, Marc Muniesa, and Andreu Fontas.

Thierry Henry: With Titi heading to my current home, I can't help but be at least a little pleased that I won't have to stop watching him. He leaves on a free to New York Red Bulls (where he debuts in 4 days against Tottenham, of all clubs) and while he had a poor final season with us, his leadership and mentoring of the younger strikers (Bojan and Pedro, for instance) will be missed.

Keirrison: While not technically out of the squad, Keirrison has made a loan move back to Brazil, where he'll be playing for Santos. It'll be interesting to see how he does and if he'll ever get a shot at making Barça's squad in the future. He might even get me to watch a few more Brazilian domestic matches as he teams up with Ganso, Neymar, and maybe Robinho.

Technically Albert Botia left on a free to Sporting Gijon (with a €2m buyback clause), but this happened a few months ago. Returing to the fold after loans are Alexander Hleb from Stuttgart, Victor Sánchez from relegated Xerez, Martin Caceres from Juventus, and Henrique from Racing Santander. I don't expect any of these players to be with the squad come the start of the season, but hopefully they're able to find good loan spots or good transfer deals.

The rumor mill is always twirling happily about as well, but we'll leave that discussion for another day. Have your say in the comments.

Hey Isiaih, hope you can show more class in your blog that you club shows. They are a disgrace. The wy their players continually come out to unsettle Febregas is classless and their diving antics on the field ruin the honour and true sense of football.

this guy is nothing special at all what real info did he give you ... other than common knowledge to everyone that supports barca... but i guess we will have to give him a chance i dont have a place on espn

Posted by Galactico4Life on 07/19/2010

its ironic that this blog has been started just before the season when Real snatch the La Liga away. And its time for Xavi, Villa, Ibra and all the aging plyrs in the squad make way for some fresh talent like C.R + Higuain + Benzema. the trophies r coming back to Madrid.

Posted by Anton on 07/19/2010

Congratulations Isaiah. I've been following BFB for a while and you guys always did a great job covering the club. It's nice to see you'll keep up the good work on ESPN. Forca Barca!

@ Dave... You are a typical Arsenal bleeding crevice. Your feelings are hurt....whaaaaaaa.. all of you lady gunners act like battered women. We aren't going to stop coming after OUR boy Cesc, so get used to it; going and stock up on some tampons and kleenex. Also, your club are even worse in their business affairs and how they treat their fans. They sold us damaged goods in Henry, he never recovered from his injuries, but you sold him to us labeled fit. Your club taps up more than anyone, look at how you jst got Konecsky. Lastly, we are no tappin up Cesc. He has said he wants to come back to Barca, his father/agent is heavily involved in making it happen. That snake oil salesman Wenger has a ridiculous price tag on him and went back on his word to Cesc. Cesc wanted to leave the last two years and only agreed to stay if Wnger put better players along side hi. Wenger went bargain shopping and bought Arshavin, while he is a good player, he is not a superstar. He got lucky with Vermeilon, another bargain, and the creme de creme Sol Cambell; what a joke. the year before he added more crap, Nasri. You shouldn't get made at Barca for trying to bring their son home, you should get made at Arsenal for pawning of mediocre players while charging the highest ticket prices in the EPL. Your team is joke, go find a new team. At least one that wants to win some hardware. All your clubs want to do is qualify for Champions League withou spending any money, so they can stuff their pockets with the profits. Next year you won't even finish 4th. There's only 6 more weeks until Van Persie is hurt again, so get ready for another season of seeing Gibbs, Eboue, Diaby, Nasri, Bendtner, and the never passing/scoring Walcott.. Ha ha!

i believe real will win the title this season without an effing doubt comrades whatever barca may have bought only goes to show their appetite for success.am an athletico fan but i got this thing for real....................Y.N.W.A

Just bookmarked the page. Visca Barça! Haters gonna hate.

Posted by Anonymous on 07/19/2010

yea for sure an athletico fan who also is for real ... can we get some real people on here that have some sort of passion...

AND LECKO YOU TALK ABOUT BARCA SPENDING MONEY TO WIN THINGS ARE YOU AN IDIOT ... REAL MADRID AKA FLORENTINO PEREZ IS THE KING OF BUYING TEAMS TO WIN TROPHIES AND YOU PEOPLE WON NOTHING....

BARCA HAVE SEVEN HOME GROWN PLAYERS WITH ALSO A HOME GROWN COACH FOR CHRIST SAKES

ALL I HAVE TO SAY IS SIX TROPHIES IN ONE SEASON
LONG LIVE BARCA

WE ARE AFRICAN UNITED.

Posted by john IRWIN on 07/20/2010

yea well have fun missing out on all the best players and teams ... but i wouldn't say it was the best world cup on history except for the fact that spain won WITH MOST OF BARCELONA'S PLAYERS SO ITS SETTLED

Posted by Praga -SA on 07/20/2010

don't really like Real, but I think they will win the league with Mourinho. He will mastermind the el-classicos,mainly by man-marking Messi out of the game(I think the results of these matches will decide the league). And honestly,Pedro has shown nothing of the class of Henry as yet,& on that note I wonder if Pedro would have been lynched had Germany equalised & thereafter won their S/Final clash in the WC.Barca will do well to win a trophy this season (which I'm hoping for)

Posted by Sterling on 07/20/2010

An idiot ranting about African football, a long suffering numpty who is probably broke form paying to get in the Emirates, an Atleti/Real "fan"???? What do all these goons have in common?? They're all LOOOOOOOOSERS!!!! We'll forgive you pathetic LOSERS for hanging around.... can only imagine what it's like on your own team's blog.

Posted by Nate Edwards on 07/20/2010

Posted by Jacques on 07/20/2010

Visca Catalunya!! Visca Barca!! Fabregas is coming. He will be turning in a transfer request soon. Mourinho will be a failure at Madrid. I can't wait to watch him suffer with the prima donna Ronalda.

Posted by Eduard on 07/20/2010

it's funny the madridista mentioned Benzema. He and Ribery just got arrested for prostitute scancal.

Posted by Eduard on 07/20/2010

oh and Isaiah, congrats making it to soccernet. This site has been leaning more towards the capital site for a long time, this should give them more balance.

Posted by JOHN IRWIN on 07/20/2010

if ronaldo and company act like kids he will treat them just like he did balotelli THE BENCH... how do you think ronaldo will react to that a temper tantrum is on the cards for sure... the season will end with mourinho getting thrown out have you forgot how badly he hates the press and there is no job with more of that than real madrid...

DONT FORGET THE LAST REAL BOSS LEAD MADRID TO THE HIGHEST POINTS TOTAL BEHIND BARCELONA ....

STILL GOT THE CAN.... HAHAHAHAHAHA

Posted by Anonymous on 07/20/2010

you mention benzama... he is the equivalent to dimitar berbatov at manchester united ... BOTH A COMPLETE WASTSE OF MONEY THEY HAVE LIKE LESS THAN 15 GOALS IN A COUPLE SEASONS EXCEPT FOR BENZAMA(SEASON 1) BUT NEXT YEAR WONT BE ANY DIFFERENT

Posted by Jacob in Oakland on 07/20/2010

I've never read you before Isaiah but I'm always looking for good Barcelona and football discussion. Those berating la liga as a two-team league should note just how good those two teams are. Barcelona have every reason to think they can do at least as well as last season--and last season was historically good.

I wonder who will be the three strikers? How often will Iniesta be played up top and will Messi be out right again or back behind a striker like we saw last spring? The questions Pep has in attack would make any manager smile to ponder.

Posted by Isaac on 07/20/2010

Congratulations Isaiah! I am a big fan of the club and will also be able to watch titi first hand next year because I'm moving to New York for college. I'm looking forward to reading you're future posts and hopefully discussing this seasons developments with you. once again congratulations on the post and good luck.

Posted by Simo on 07/21/2010

What do you think on the fabregas saga? Personally, i think Barcelonas's conduct in this makes a mockery of the club motto.

Posted by Jacques on 07/21/2010

Cesc wants to come and is probably stoking the fires on this behind the scenes. The Barcelona players are childhood friends of his and great friends of his. If he asked them to stop, they would. The bottom line is that Fabregas wants out of Arsenal but he wants to be as classy as possible on the exit. Cesc belongs in Catalunya playing for the club he truly loves. It's what he wants and it will happen eventually.

Posted by Tim on 07/21/2010

All signs continue to point towards Cesc coming to Barca, but I can't help but wonder where does he fit? Do you pay a 30M+ transfer for a player who couldn't fit his way into a Spanish-side lineup that consists nearly 100% of Barca midfielders? Scratch that, have Cesc play CF...wait, who does he supplant from there? Playing out of position at a wing, is Cesc better than Pedro? I'll grant it's a lovely position to be in for Barca, but is it worth the cost?

Posted by benny on 07/21/2010

i support barcelona! hope they buy a def mid diff from busquets...promote muniesa...we are ready to go...

cool.....congats isaiah! soccernet´s Great!Hope u can handle "the HATERS club".hope this cap doesnt only fit but stays glued at all times. and hellooooo... cesc! rememb the saying "u never know what u've got until you've lost it".regular places on teams isn't something any star in their right senses would despense so easily. A lot of plyrs would trade their Souls to get there. ar you kidding me! who do fuck is gonna sit out from guad's winning eleven for you? think again bro.... cos you're doing jst fine with the gunners. From the deepest of depts......... VISCA BARÇA!!!!!!!!

Posted by joetex13 on 07/22/2010

i'm sick and tired of hearing about barca's aim for fabregas. you guys are not going to get him and here's two big reasons why:
1-he has no place in your squad, too many good players start, he will have a hard time acquiring playing time...EX:The World Cup, Spanish Team AKA Barcelona FC (with a few Blancos)
2-Arsenal actually needs him and they'll just keep on rejecting Barca's offer.
Here's a tip, unload some weight, then he'll come. maybe 2011-2012.

Look real is a good team i respect that but barca is a better squad n also arguably the best ever group of players who mesh so well as a team.lets put hopes behind n love off team behind n give these crop of players there respect.with inter millan jose had more defensive minded players who did the job in the center of the feild n thats what made them go through.xavi, messi n inesta move too swift in the center of pitch for alonzo(diarra did a better job.puyol n pique are the best center back tag team in the world today n also most composed.sergio ramos i like also but his animalistic ways need to change.ifi played for barca i would have already loose my cool n punch that fool off but then again thats what there coach wanted.anyways im a manchester U fan n i go with inter in italy.just have maximum respect for this crop of players that barca has today.i respect real also but they need a different plan.they got a great group of players but need to try playing an offensive game.luv 4 aLL
