Barcelona

It's international week, so a modicum of attention is turned to the reigning European Champions in what will be the final shakedown ahead of this year's World Cup. There are no surprises in the lineup for the game against France, as it looks increasingly likely that Vicente del Bosque will stick with a winning lineup.

The national side have an embarrassment of riches up front, with a strikeforce that ticks all boxes. An incredible marksmen in Fernando Torres, a prolific build up player with end product to match in David Villa, and that little bit of hustle from Fernando Llorente. The remaining two strikers in contention (nobody say Raúl, for pity's sake) are Dani Guiza and Álvaro Negredo.

Now, I can't say that I am particularly fond of Pedro as a player, but he is as prolific as either of the latter two. Guiza is off-colour and 'The Beast of Vallecas' has developed an unfortunate habit of getting sent off with alarming frequency for Sevilla. Pedro has done little to get the press talking, and even the Catalan press aren't particularly up in arms about his exclusion from the national side for this week's friendly, but surely there would be no harm in a cameo for the man from the Canary Islands?

If nothing else, Pedrito is a lucky player, and scores without doing much in particular. He has forced his way into the front three at Barcelona, and that doesn't happen completely by accident - you have to take advantage of the breaks you are given. Against the best in the world, a striker who can play on the wing, score in six competitions and rack up an impressive goal tally as a substitute might just be the bit of luck that brings the cup to Spain.

Still, he's young, and will debut sooner rather than later if he keeps up his form. Then we will see if Pedro is the real deal.

To say that Pedro is consistently lucky is false or else I'd be asking him the winning lotto numbers every week. He is definitely not the most spectacular player in terms of pure skill and pace. But he's still good, and from what I've seen so far into the season, he's a player that knows how to play to his strengths in a star studded Barca unit. He's made plenty of crucial strikes for Barca (the 1-0 screamer against Malaga being the latest), and has shown to be very composed under pressure for his age.

He's hardworking and definitely deserves atleast a substitute appearance for Spain to honor the form he's had this season.

Very ignorant writeup from Duncan...Hard to hide the Madridista in attempting objectivity about a Barca player, eh?

Posted by Anonymous on 03/02/2010

Dincan is a hater, that just thinks pedro is luck ALL the time, Yes! he can be at times bout isnt everyone? Pedro does deserve to be in the spain squad, just look at Bojan. He was in the squad before, when he has not even come close to pedro's form or skill.

Pedro is such a wonderful player. The future is so bright and i want to believe he got something great to deliver to barcelona. Gtreetings to all barcelona players and coaching crew. MESSI you are the BEST

Posted by Gaurav on 03/02/2010

I think everyone should be a bit more fair towards Duncan and read the phrase "If nothing else" preceding "Pedrito is a lucky player".

Looking back at my comment my tone came out a bit wrong as well. This is a great piece with just analysis of Pedro.

Posted by alfredo on 03/02/2010

he's playing good, but he shouldn't even be considered to play at the World Cup.

Posted by Anonymous on 03/02/2010

i think that pedro is a good player becouse he is scoring almost in every single game that he is playing.he comes in as a sub and scores which i think no player is doing it now.

Posted by rob on 03/03/2010

barca fans just have to find anything anti-barca and pro-madrid

Posted by Moreira on 03/03/2010

Gaurav you are a retard. lol
How are you going to write something and then take it right back? Pedro is good but spain has a deep roster at that position so it will be hard for him to get in right now maybe in the future as he develops more but not right now. They have better and more experience players.

barca por vida

Posted by Ken on 03/03/2010

More fair to say of Pedro is that at the moment, the only complete skill he has shown has been the ability to put the ball in the back of the net. He can't take players on, lacks effective pace, and is sloppy with his passes. But man, he can score, and it's not luck. That just happens to be his only developed skill ... so far.

"Guiza is off-colour and 'The Beast of Vallecas' has developed an unfortunate habit of getting sent off with alarming frequency for Sevilla"...since when does Guiza pay for Sevilla?

Posted by Ed on 03/03/2010

Never mind.....read it wrong, still horribly written.

Posted by Ian on 03/03/2010

you, sir, are unbelievable. Pedro has done little to nothing? he's lucky? Well, sir, you are one of two things; either you don't watch Barcelona play or you simply want to get a reaction from people like me. You've succeeded, congratulations. To say the things you've said about Pedro without impunity is offensive. Please, lets just complete the circle of op. ed. idiocy and write how Raul needs to be starting for the national squad. While you are entitled to an opinion, you should be aware that your opinions make you look like a fool.

Posted by Nigel on 03/03/2010

@Ed

The Beast of Vallecas at Sevilla refers to Negredo not Guiza.
As for Pedro i think he is worth a call up since its always good to have a trick up your sleeve. Remember Salvatore Scillachi at World Cup 1990? He just happened to be in the right place at the right time to score goals for Italy.

Posted by True Barca fan on 03/03/2010

At the start of the season i was not a true Pedro fan. i was skeptical about this new kid. But i have never been proven wrong in such a way. What Pedro does at Barca is nothing short of magic. He pops up every time the team needs him and scores the most important goals. He has pace, he has plenty of skill, and if you watch him you will see it. He has great control and composure and he is very intelligent, which helps him get the goals because he positions himself perfectly. He is an amazing player and he totally deserves an international call up, not only for his skills, but versatility that would fit very well with the Spain set up. He is a winger and a goalscorer, and he can play as a forward or a midfielder. So please, before saying he is lucky, look at all of his achievements, and use your logic to determine the odds of that being just luck

Posted by jgreco on 03/03/2010

Yeah I would have to agree with the majority of people on here. Luck? Not when you score at the consistent rate that he has this season. Lack of skill? Horrendous comment. He is brilliant on the ball, combines very well with Messi and Ibra up top, and his knack for finding the back of the net has completely won games for Barca this year. He fits in perfectly with their system and at times has outperformed both Ibra AND Messi. As for an international call up I think he should most definitely be given a shot because there is no question that Torres and Villa will be running the show but he could be such a deadly secret weapon and just what Spain might need to advance in the later knock-out stages.

Posted by Alfie on 03/03/2010

Lack of skill?
Come on.....He is Barcelona player....even their defender have wonderful skill.....i bet my u guys all my money...that even maxwell or alves or even pique are better skilled than most lets say (bottom-mid table club) player...

luck is part of skill remember that.....for now i believe spain does not need him...because he plays mostly as winger-wide striker....and spain already has mata, silva, iniesta, navas in those posisitions....

and he is no better than those 4 names....give him couple more years to mature as a footballer and he will be as good as silva

Posted by Eric Grady on 03/03/2010

Pedro has got tons of skill, and he should definitely be included in the Spain squad eventually, even if it's after the World Cup. There are many questions that he still needs to answer. Can he keep his form up? Is he just getting a lot of help from his talented Barca teammates? Can he excel in a league, and country, chock full of talented forwards/midfielders? Much remains to be seen from this talented young Spaniard.

Mr. Duncan Bishop undoubtedly took great time and effort to warm to the idea of Higuan; for reasons unknown, Gonzo was looked at as capable but little more. Now look at him; begrudgingly hailed.
Futbol likes its divas, no doubt. They papers. But on Saturday or Sunday, when my stomach churns in its nots, I am screaming for Pep to place 17 on the pitch. I need a goal, and in the 77th minute, with the game in doubt, my belly does not discern.
Pedro delivers.

Posted by Anti-Madrista on 03/03/2010

you have got to be kidding. As a life long die hard barca fan i watch every game of every competition, whether live or recorded. I can tell you Pedro is much more than lucky. He has great pace, patience, and most of all he knows his place amongst the stars. He knows when to pass (as stupid as it sounds) and knows when to barrel his small frame into opposing defenders. I do not think he SHOULD be in the team, but if he was it would not bother me. I think there are a few more deserving players.

And Pedro is not better than Bojan was at his finest in 07/08. The poor boy is going through a rough patch. I believe they will both improve, hopefully are able to stay with the club, and go on to be wonderful players. Why not?

And Duncan, take off your Ronaldo Jersey.

Posted by Aket Angyu on 03/03/2010

Pedro is a great talent for his age he deserves a call up

Posted by Real4Life on 03/03/2010

Even though i DETEST barca from the bottom of my heart, i think Pedro is the real deal. Duncan says he's lucky and i don't think that's true, but even if it were, great players make their own luck. Still, Duncan did give Pedro credit, so all the barca losers - i mean lovers - shouldn't get their panties into too much of a knot.

pedro is a player who ought to be featured in every game played be it club or national team.it has come to the notice that of late he is doing well at the wings though thierry henry plays that position.if he should hold on to his style of playing i don't see any reason why he shouldn't be featured in any spanish international game

Posted by Kyle Rice on 03/05/2010

I agree that it doesn't seem that Pedro does anything spectacular in the matches. The guy just knows how to find the back of the net. I don't think that is luck, i think it is skill. Many players have different skills, but to be able to finish consistently is something that is not luck. Some players just know how to score, and he is one of them. Decent evaluation on him, but Luck is not the best word to describe Pedro. I think he would be very dangerous coming off the bench for Spain knowing teams might over look him. I say at the very least he deserves a chance.

Posted by Lenny on 03/07/2010

I think Pedrito has done a great job, very much a clutch player. How many times has he come of the bench to put it in the back of the net a mere few minutes later. With that said, I do not believe he is quite needed in the squad. He is a fairly prolific at times of danger, butif you are picking the best of thebest for a team, he can wait til 2014 for that cup, some years of experiance, by that time if he keeps his current form and improves even, there is no doubt he will be a starter, unless someone even better pops. Personally though, I believe Del Bosque is doing a fantastic job, and I would just listen to him and his advisors, after all they are the ones that brought spain so far. Overall, Pedro is a magnificent player for his club, in due time, which I believe the current Spain line up has earned their places, so in due time he will also earn his rightful place among the starting 11 for his country. Now maybe a little too early to throw him in the most crucial event of football.

Posted by sebrina on 03/08/2010

Pedro has proved that he can score in clutch situations again and again. He's maybe not World Cup worth yet....I don't know. I don't think he would embarass Spain or Barcelona if he were called up.

Posted by Adefowope Samuel on 03/12/2010

Pedro is a good player and he deserve to be one of the players that will play in the coming world cup. He is well talented. If he is positioned as a striker, am very sure that, he will perform better and even if he is instructed to play from right or left side, he will also prove himself because he is using both legs. I even prefer him than Guiza as a substitute for Fernando Toress.

Posted by Rigo Amador on 03/16/2010

I think Pedro definately should get a shot in the world cup. He could really help Spain out, he's a great player. Looking forward to see him play this summer en la furia roja.

Posted by dwayne on 05/08/2010

pedro should get a call to the world cup squad, young or old he playing well ,he has over twenty goals this year, and i think he would be good coming of the bench. He has no little or no experince at that level ,but he playing well for barca the biggest team in the world so whatever. And just to let you'll know im from barbados, and im the biggest barca fan in the caribbean.thats y i rock a barca tatoo on my shoulder
