The season isn’t over, but watching the match between Arsenal and Chelsea on Saturday, it would have been easy to think that both sides had nothing to play for. For Arsenal, we are in danger of undoing the good work of the second half of the season by not finishing off the job of finishing third. Apart from Newcastle’s good run of form, we’re fortunate that the teams behind us can’t put a string of good results together.
The team looked fatigued against Chelsea, which is understandable at this stage of the season, however when the opposition were in a similar state and were mainly focussed on defending, it’s frustrating that we couldn’t win the game. It’s hard to be angry at the result though, because it was a poor game, and Arsenal didn’t force the issue or grab the initiative to press forward for a win.
We’re still in a good position to finish third, but we have to take the last three matches seriously and not just let the season drift and meander away, as it did at the end of last season. The negative vibes that built up during the last few weeks of last season then continued into the summer, and things hardly went smoothly in the last off-season. Fatigue does play a part, but it’s also the case for every team. The players should be able to deal with it and be prepared to give everything, otherwise we’ll find ourselves slip out of the top three, and possibly the top four.
One of the main talking points amongst supporters after the Chelsea match was Aaron Ramsey again. I’ve said enough times on this blog that I think he will be a good player for Arsenal, and that he’s still young and is going through a rough patch of form. We’ve seen how Tomas Rosicky has turned it round, so there’s no reason why Ramsey won’t improve. With the injuries we’ve got, we need him to find some form quickly, otherwise our midfield will look weak without Arteta.
On Saturday, Arsenal weren’t overrun in midfield, far from it, but there was a spark missing. Ramsey and Song don’t have the understanding that Song and Arteta have built up this season, and whilst Rosicky was ok, Chelsea had midfielders sitting deep enough to try and nullify his threat. Ramsey was caught in possession too much, but he can’t be criticised for working hard to win the ball back when that happened. He just needs to quicken his decision making when playing in the deeper role as his role can be vital when trying to maintain momentum in an attack, and it’s important in setting the momentum from the deeper role when building attacks from midfield.
One positive in central midfield was the return of Abou Diaby. He still looked rusty, but having only made three substitute appearances all season, that was understandable. Stoke next week might not be the ideal game for him to be eased back into, but his height will be useful with the inevitable Stoke tactics, should he be selected from the start. Hopefully Diaby will be able to have a full pre-season and get back to his best next season. He can be outrageously skilful and powerful in midfield; he just needs to be injury free and in form.
Most Gooners would have been excited to see Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain start on the left, however we can’t expect greatness from him in every game. He’s still only 18, and has exceeded people’s expectations this season anyway. He still looked dangerous against Chelsea, but his eagerness to attack often meant the ball ran away from him or his control let him down. With Theo Walcott injured and likely to be out for the remaining games, I think we’ll see more of the Ox on the right. It’ll be a good chance for him to make a late claim to be in the England squad for the European Championships. On the other side, we need Gervinho to find some form as well. He’s looked out of sorts after the African Cup of Nations, and if we sign another forward minded player in the summer, he could be the one to miss out on a regular starting place next season.
Up front, Robin van Persie looked tired. More so than the rest of the team, fatigue for Robin is to be expected. We’ve never got so many games out of him in a season, and the effects of it are just catching up with him. As this shows, Robin’s time on the pitch in the Premier League has increased massively this season (via @1DavidWall on twitter). He had chances against Chelsea that would have resulted in a goal earlier in the season, but the problem remains in our squad that a fatigued Robin van Persie is still a heck of lot more likely than Marouane Chamakh or Ju-Young Park to convert those chances. The priority in the summer initially has to be to get Robin to stay. After that, sign someone to support him.
Robin van Persie was deservedly named the PFA player of the year on Sunday night, proving that some footballers do know what they’re talking about. Wayne Rooney has been in good form recently, but there couldn’t be any other winner. Van Persie has not only played in every game and scored a lot of goals, he’s lead the team through some difficult times, and we’ve come out of it in decent shape. He’s matured as a player and as a leader this season, so hopefully he’ll see that he can progress further as part of this team next season.
The biggest positive from the Chelsea game, and one of the reasons why the match wasn’t a thriller, was that we defended well. Laurent Koscielny returned from suspension and was immense. He has improved so much this season, and is now arguably a better defender than Thomas Vermaelen. Koscielny is quick, reads the game well and now isn’t afraid of a tackle. He’s another example of what hard work and a bit of experience can do for a player.
Frankly, the Chelsea match was boring, so the less said about it the better. We didn’t lose and kept a clean sheet, so let’s take that forward to Stoke on Saturday. It’s well publicised how Arsenal don’t like going to Stoke, but they have very little to play for, so hopefully that’ll take a bit of the edge off the game for them. It’ll still be a difficult game though, and Arsenal should by now have wised up to the challenge faced and be able to brace themselves for that challenge.
If there is one game left this season that I’m desperate for Aaron Ramsey to play well in, it’s the Stoke match. We all know the history he has with this fixture, so it really is a good time to get behind him and the team. If there are brainless Stoke fans booing him again (it wasn’t his fault that his leg was broken), it’d be great to see Ramsey put in a great performance. It would go a long way to getting the relationship he has with the fans back to the strength it was after that horrific incident.
It’s not just Ramsey, but the whole team need to put in a good performance at Stoke, otherwise our much heralded comeback might collapse Spurs-style. Let’s face it; we want to leave that sort of thing for them to do.

Another great article Sam. The players cannot rest on their laurels and must finish the season on a high. I agree with you about ramsey becoming a great player in the future. However i do feel that for the moment he should be given minimal game time like maybe when the team is winning comfortably. He gives the ball away too easily which is not the arsenal way and in these last 3 crucial games, may become a liability to the teams chances of winning those games. He should be played in pre-season games where he will be able to play with more confidence and no pressure, not when winning is absolutely essential right now. What are your thoughts on this?
Sam Limbert: Thanks for your comment. I agree that he'll need game time in pre-season, but the problem at the moment is that we're light on midfield, so don't have many other options. Diaby could start against Stoke, but it would be wrong to expect 90 minutes out of him, so Ramsey would be needed at some point.

I think I more or less agree with you on Ramsey, Sam. He's still young and clearly could be a great player. Mostly, however, I think he's just tired. This has been his first full season in the Premier League, and instead of being eased into things he's been asked to step into the empty space left by Fabregas, Nasri and Wilshire. I hope he finds form this weekend, but realistically I think what he needs is the summer break. I predict that next season, when we'll have (hopefully) Rosicky, Arteta, Wilshire, Diaby and maybe Frimcoq to share the load, we'll see what he's really capable of.
Also just like to note that Walcott's injury is a real blow. I know he still isn't great, but he's found a little bit of form in the second half of this season and, although the fans love him, I'm not convinced that Ox is yet as good as people want him to be. Fingers crossed he proves me wrong.

Well said uncle sam but i dont understand why the stoke city fans are booing Ramsey instead of applauding him after recovering from that horrific leg break.Do u think Chamak or Park chu young should be given a chance at the Britannia stadium because it is very clear that RVP is tired.
Sam Limbert: Thanks for your comment. I think RvP should start, we need the points too much.

Hi Sam, your article getting lower as per Arsenal performances on 2 home matches (LOL).
1. For me on Chelsea match, Ramsey has shown a bit improvement comparing to recent performances. We can't blame on him even though gave the ball away too easy but tried to track back. So for the remaining 3 matches he will absolutely play since Arteta and Walcott out injured. Diaby should play on Arteta role and Ramsey back in behind RvP (considering Rosicky has injury). What's your thought to suit Diaby and Ramsey?
2. Hopefully RvP will score to get a Golden Boot winner. Do you see AW will let RvP play all matches to get it?
3. Gervinho - as my comment on previous article, he was out of form and will out of favour (Chamakh clone) next season should player like Podolski come in.
4. I still believe we can hold on 3rd place as Newcastle will have crucial matches with Chelsea & City. Also hoping Toon for 4th. Do you think we can hold it?
5. How the progress of Podolski acquisition?
Sam Limbert: Thanks for your comment.
1. I think Rosicky will also play, so Diaby and Ramsey are likely to be rotated.
2. If fit, RvP will play.
3. Gervinho might do, but I think he can regain his form if he has a good pre-season.
4. I think we can do it, so long as we don't treat them as 'end-of-season' games.
5. Not sure.

I agree that it was a boring, frustrating game.. especially when it's on at 4:45 am here..
it's been tough with Ramsey. we all want him to succeed but he's got to break through with some confidence and win the fans back over. stoke will provide a great chance for him, but it certainly will be tough. i thought that his form at the start, filling in for runaway world-class midfielders, was strong and promising, but since Rosicky's return, has been off.
it was great to see Diaby! i am happy to see him out and making plays. it was great to see Gibbs and especially great to see Koscielny. he and Vermaelen make a great partnership. and lastly, i felt that Gervinho looked like the old Gervinho, at the start of the season. fresh and creating chances when we needed them.
Sam, can Bennayoun help fill in the gap of Arteta this last games? and a healthy Rosicky as well. or even Coquelin? i feel Santos doesn't fit on the pitch a the moment.. Thanks!
Sam Limbert: Thanks for your comment. Benayoun could help in the middle, although we're still slightly short on the flanks so he might be needed there. Coquelin might get a game before the season finishes. Santos was ok when he came on against Chelsea, but the fact we brought him on shows how little trust Wenger has in Chamakh now.

Sam,
The manager's deployment of Andre Santos down the left wing piqued my curiosity quite a bit. Santos looked promising, if not dangerous, down that left wing, and his substitution did inject a bit of freshness in match, albeit not enough for a winning goal, of course. Do you think he could possibly be given a go there in the future (whether this season or next)? Or are the likes of Ox, Gervinho, and Benayoun still favorites to play that role?
Also, I must inquire whether we CAN classify Park with the likes of Chamakh and Arshavin given that we have seen so little of him. Of course, that the manager leaves Park out of the squad sheet altogether, and that Chamakh is given the number two spot behind RvP over Park is, admittedly, telling. But is he really THAT bad? You said before that you think he will stay for another season. Do you still hold onto that prediction, given how...well, useless, we all think he is to the club? What good will it do for him OR the club if he stays?
Sam Limbert: Thanks for your comment. Santos could play their in the future, but I doubt it'd be a long term plan. I think it said a lot about Wenger's confidence in Chamakh that he was willing to bring on a left back to attack instead.
It's difficult to know much about Park because, as you said, we've barely seen him. I'd like to have seen him more, and because I think Chamakh will go back, Park might get a chance next season. If he gets a decent pre-season, he might be trusted more. Plus we can't expect RvP to play every game again next season.

Sam, I agree with you on most points, but why not play Coq against Stoke? I agree that Diaby cant put in 90 mins; so he could play like for an hour, and then Coq could come on. Coquelin is aggressive, and a better tackler than Ramsey; and against a hostile Stoke side, we will need grit and tenacity in the midfield. Finally, why not play two strikers against Stoke, with RVP looking so tired? Say, Rosicky and Song in the mid, and RVP with Park up front? If nothing else, it will at least give defenders a distraction and allow RVP more space.
Sam Limbert: Thanks for your comment. Coquelin could be an option against Stoke, but like Diaby he hasn't played for a while, so we can't rely on his fitness. I doubt we'll play two strikers, especially as we're away from home so will want to dominate the midfield.

Thanks Sam for the great article.. Hitting the nail on its head.. Im real sorry for Rvp, he should be scoring more goals or rooney will overtake him.. HE HAS TO END UP TOP SCORER(rvp ofcourse) but he played too many games and his focus is decreasing, not only that but the manager, team & fans are expecting everything from him.. To be honest if he didnt feature in the last 3 games he still has done more than enough, but this cant be afforded.. I believe a strategy similar to the home game will help with him coming off the bench.. We all hope he stays.. I just want to ask 1 question: how come the 3rd richest football team in the world doesnt have enough funds for players(not meant to be sarcastic)..
Sam Limbert Thanks for your comment. We do have enough funds for players, but we don't necessarily use all of them, whereas other clubs use more than they have and develop big debts. Hopefully UEFA's FFP will stop this from happening.

I believe wenger should field diaby in first half, then bring on coquelin rather than playing ramsey. He needs to be fiven a break along with gervinho, for they are suffering from confudence crises.

The two who looked the most tired were RVP and Walcott. RVP spurned chances he usually would have at least got on goal. I almost feel like he's been a bit off since the missed chip against Milan at home. Since then, only a solid goal against Newcastle, and a penalty against wolves. No worries though. I'll put a fiver that Gervinho sets him up with a sitter this weekend and he buries it. As much as the Ox didn't shine, at least he was relevant. Walcott was anonymous until he got hurt. The worst part about this is that he was going against such a green defender in Bertrand. Bertrand looked able, and pacy, but Walcott didn't test him enough for my liking.

Fans always have their scapegoat. Before Ramsey it was Alumina, Denilson, Eboue, Theo, etc. I Hope Ramsey understands this and concentrates on improving his overall game. When you are under the spotlight your mistakes are greatly magnified.
This is looking to be another season when the wheels start to fall off our well oiled machine and the great Arsenal hobbles home. Player pick up injuries, are unable to deliver and the squad seem more interested in ending the season and taking a holiday. Its going to be another season when finishing 3rd/4th goes down to the wire.

Curiously, hasn't RVPs goal drought coincided with Rosicky's run as our attacking midfielder. I wonder if this is right. Ramsey may have been a better feeder for RVP then.

Hi I disagree with the Ramsey comment, He may be young and out of form. But too many times in games he lets games pass him by or gets dispossessed it seems only when others play well so does Ramsey. As for Rosicky he was ill so his performance was quite good on that front. We have Coquelin and diaby available for stoke and would go for one of them above Ramsey bring him on if things need changing have benayoun on left

So, did anyone notice how Ramsey seemed to open up his game when Diaby came on? He actually was attempting long balls and chips rather than just standing there.
 |
Posted by Robin on 04/23/2012
I think Arsenal would be better off starting Diaby and Song in the midfield and Ramsey just behind RvP. Then in the second half, Rosicky could be a little more of a creative spark, as he doesn't have quite the work rate of Ramsey on the defensive end. Hope to see Park get a little time on the pitch, if only to see what he can do. We should have at least loaned him out to get some experience like Miyaichi

The game against Chelsea was a game of missed chance's they could so easy have won so a draw was not a bad result. The problem now is they have so few game's left to gain points that every game is important and the nearer it get's to the end the more pressure goes on the player's to preform will decide the men from the boys. The Stoke game is a big test we all know how Stoke play they will be strong at the back catch them on the break and use throw in's and free kick's to score a lot for the defense to cope with as well as Crouch elbow in the face tactic so to get a result will be a boost to the team a loss could trigger a collapse? Arsenal problems now are the same as at the begining injuries are playing a big part and the failure to sign a striker who can take the load off Van Persie. The loss of Walcott is a blow not so much against Stoke as he does not enjoy playing against this type of team but will be missed in the next two games,Wenger has some hard decisions to make.

Hi Sam,
I do not understand why we keep using fatigue as an excuse over the years for our inconsistency. We don't hear Barcelona complain of fatigue when they lose to Real Madrid last weekend, neither do other teams still fighting for Champion's League glory. Fatigue is probably the most convenient excuse. Defeat to Wigan because the players were tired? I think it is the lack of drive of the players. It has destroyed our seasons in recent years.

Do you remembered we played AC Milan home without Arteta? We could slot in Coq there. What do do think?
Sam Limbert: Thanks for your comment. Coquelin didn't play against AC Milan, but is an option if he's fit enough. He's looked good when he's played this season.

Despite Arsene comments, both teams wanted a draw. No risk were taken by the players. I think is a good result.
As for Ramsey, he has reached apoint of his career, either he stagnates or progress. Fromthe last couple of games, I would sad to say,he had regress. He has this irritating tendency to play fancy flicks when a simple pass will do. Now he dilly dally with the ball has been proven dangerous. Teams have targetted this weakness. Its up to him to recognised this and improve on his decision making. When Wilshire is fit, Ramsey will get even less chances to improve his game, as such I think he will stagnate at this level. Sad.
On the comment on Rosicky, he was a great player before injury. Remember him, Hleb, Fab and Falmini. Oh they were wonderful to watch. The speed they played the ball, movement and intelligience. How unfortunate they broke up after only one season. Stupid Hleb and Flamini.

Sam,
1. do you think getting a superstar striker (though not wenger's style) will help or hurt RvP staying? I think it's a double-edged sword.
2. Podolski or Hazard?
3. Barca will probably start unwinding this season after losing to Real and maybe even Chelsea. Mourinho will probably leave after winning the league and possibly CL. Given this, if Arsenal could plague both teams for 2 players, what position and player do you reckon will be a good fit?
I hope Park stays and proves he's worth something. It is, after all, an opportunity of a frickin lifetime...
Sam Limbert: Thanks for your comment.
1. Signing a top quality striker will help as it'll take some of the pressure off him and show our ambition.
2. Podolski seems more likely at the moment and is more experienced.
3. I think you're writing Barca and Madrid off too quickly to be honest so doubt teams will just get the chance to pick players out of their squads. If that does happen, we could call Cesc back ;)

You've lost me with this one Sam. Fatigue is understandable but no excuse for a team that should be absolutely committed to third place.
"It’s hard to be angry at the result though, because it was a poor game, and Arsenal didn’t force the issue or grab the initiative to press forward for a win." Gooners shouldn't accept mediocrity from the team just because the opponents serve up the same.
"Ramsey was caught in possession too much, but he can’t be criticised for working hard to win the ball back when that happened." What? Yes he can. This is the EPL. Ramsey needs the fans to get off his back but he needs to adjust his style to distribute the ball faster. He needs to learn the Arsenal way of short quick passing to create options, not always looking for the 20 yd ball which opens up a defence.
Overall the game highlighted our squad weakness and mental fatigue (RvP in particular has lost the spark, the miss off Walcott's free kick was a shocker for a player of his quality).

Apart from the fantastic RVP, I've been very impressed with the defense this season. I think we have a great CB in Koscielny. But I do feel that when Arsenal fills one gap, they leak another. If you think about it in recent seasons when we have a great midfield, our back line was horrible. Or when we have decent defenders and midfielders, our forwards got injured. And arguably, this season it was our midfield that was having a consistently inconsistent season. Obvious in the Chelsea game, we seem like vacation mode, that players are already thinking about their holidays. No focus, no concentration, no desire - just like how it was during the poor run at the beginning of this year.
What surprises me is that unexpectedly the next game all those missing characters can just magically reappear again. I don't understand how they can seem so disinterested in one game and then look like they're fighting for their lives in the next.
Sam, what do you think makes Arsenal players so volatile?
Sam Limbert: Thanks for your comment. Honestly, I don't know. If someone does know, they need to be working inside the club as soon as possible!

Fortunate for us that Tottenham keeps imploding and that late win we got against Newcastle a few weeks back is looking massive now.
I do think Newcastle will drop points as they have a tough run in and certainly hoping Tottenham continues to struggle but we can't count on either of these things to happen.
Therefore Arsenal would be making a huge mistake not to treat any of the remaining matches as critical.
Time to dig deep and finish strong. I believe 2 wins will be sufficient to lock up third. Away to Stoke is never easy but a win would go a long ways towards solidifying 3rd spot and demoralizing our competition.
If Chelsea happens to get another result against Barca then I would say we better plan on top 3 just to be safe.
Agree with you Sam it would be great to see Ramsey have a great match. He deserves it with his hard work. Certainly would be nice to see RVP add to his tally as well but as long as we win I don't care who scores.
Come on Arsenal!

While Wenger spoke of lacking a passing game, I think we have ditched the passing game long time ago for a more direct and practical style. Just take a look at the winning streak and you can see that most of the goals scored were very direct in nature. Balls over the top are the current fad.
We need to rest RVP for the Stoke game and bring him on the 60th min to get us a goal. Mental rather than physical fatigue is what's holding him back and I think bench time might do him good.
If Wilshire and Diarby returns to top shape and form next season, lets ditch this current approach and work on a really good passing game. Just take a look at the goals by Nani and Welback in the United/Everton match, they are both a result of great passing and movement to open up spaces.

Since our climb to 3rd place, it looks like the team has lost motivation (with an exception of Man City game). What do you think Sam?
Sam Limbert: Thanks for your comment. I think there could have been a hint of complacency in the team, and a sense that the job was already done. Hopefully the last two games have shown that the players still need to fight. We shouldn't need setbacks to make us play well though.

Sam, great article as usual.
I know Van Persie is clearly favorite to start, but when has Park Chu Young gotten a real chance to show us what he's got? As with many players, I think he needs games to get into form. I liked his control and calmness on the ball the few times I've seen him play. Then again I haven't seen many games that he has played in with us or Monaco previously so I could be wrong.

Hi Sam, thanks for the good read, can't believe I got up at 4:30am to watch that match!
Since you are a bit closer to the club & media over there, have you heard whether we might be loaning out Miyaichi, Lansbury and Frimpong again? I look at our line-up in midfield and with everyone fit we have so much to choose from, and according to what I've read these 3 are highly rated - so, do we really need to buy a Hazard or M'Vila? Perhaps AW could spend on 2 out and out strikers and a replacement for Djourou.
Sam Limbert: Thanks for your comment. Nothing really said about Miyaichi, Lansbury or Frimpong yet. Personally, I think we might look to see Lansbury on as he's not been near the first team yet. What happens with Frimpong will depend on his injury. I think Wenger will wait to see how Ryo does in pre-season before deciding what to do with him. If they have a good pre-season, possibly a bigger name signing isn't what we need.

Sigh, perhaps Mata correct. Try but we could not beat the Chelsea B's. Can we beat anyone who plays us for a draw?
Fatigue? perhaps though RVP still finding good positions and the ref assistant's calls were close. Unfortunately, he was it from the front line. A large factor in his award. Golden boot soon?
Again, only Ox was willing to run at sitting defenders. This game screamed out for a second half penalty to be drawn by our fleet footed wingers. Ramsey got caught in possession a couple times while going the wrong way! He needs time away from the regular fixtures. Playing him wide hasn't helped.
No mention of Kos' wood striking header? He has made good on the Prof's pick.
Sam, since you bring up the second striker. Your thoughts for summer:
a) a recall (Bendtner, Vella, Arshavin - allowed to play in the middle)
b) Theo to get his wish and move inside
c) insert big name inevitiably not coming
d) who is free!!
content for 3rd; wanting more
Sam Limbert: Thanks for your comment. I think (c) is more likely, but it won't necessarily be a big name. (a) also a possibility but most of those players want to move.

I think it's unfair to criticize Ramsey, as most of his struggles have came out of position. He struggles with the deeper holding role that arteta and wilshere excel at, and once he was able to shift up towards the end of the game he provided some good balls and great movement.
Rosicky often provides great on the ball skill, but Ramsey always impresses me in the attacking half with his clever touches and most of all, his great movement off the ball to get into great positions. Based on how many shots he's had, I think that once he settles down and stops putting it over the bar, he'll be quite a scoring threat to go along with his playmaking.

Posted by arsenal fan on 04/25/2012
Koscielny deserved better credit than that. he played superbly. very unlucky for not have a goal from the header against the crossbar. the last minute flying tackle he made to prevent (Kalou or Sturiddge i don't remember) from scoring was brilliant. it was all about the commitment, the never say die attitude, the heart to do something for the team, etc.. these are what we need from the players in every game, no matter it is a big game or it is the last game of a season, or whatever name of the game you like to name it.. the other player must learn from him especially Ramsey. i am very hard against Ramsey from my previous writing because i also still believe that he will be good for Arsenal in the future. he should ask Ben Arfa how to rediscover form after broken leg..
now that Chelsea won against Barcelona, the third spot is a MUST. if Chelsea win the Champions League, the fourth spot can say goodbye to the CL. so.. COME ON.. ARSENAL!!!!!

I think 'fatigue' should not brought as an issue especially against Chelsea. They are the one that deserve this reason with 3 games in a week and Barca in next 2 days[travel to Barca].
Just accept that we are really meltdown towards end of the season just like the past and that's why AW need to learn to have good backup in this kind of situation. It happen every season.Deal with it.Maturity, strong mentality, high commitment, willingness and desire that make certain teams able to go through till the end and make them a champion.
Arsenal - need just 2 wins to secure 3rd.
Newcastle- Looks like 4th belong to them because Chelsea fully booked with tight schedules till the end[2 cup final]
Tottenham - What's wrong with them?
RVP just lost his finishing touch which I counted that he missed almost 7 goals-7 chances in front of goal [which normally he can score with his earlier form]in the last 5 games.
Now we really need other players to take this responsibility from him.We should able take 3rd.

I think this season really weird, fun and full of surprise.MU no doubt likely to grab their league champ but thrown away in just 2 minutes to Everton in Old Trafford which I never thought this kind of things did really happen in pro football.
Tottenham could be one of trio challengers for the title in mid season and now struggle for fourth.M-City once comfortably at front with points-scoring edge than United but now at 2nd-challengers to United for the title. Liverpool- looks like may have good season at the beginning but now may drop to 8-9 or 10th.Chelsea struggled under Villa-Baos and now are in the cup final for FA and CL.Who have thought of that? MU and M-City should be in Final in Europa but both slipped at Qtr final.Barca too invincible to lost the title for LaLiga and CL but now maybe no cup in Spain or Europe.Arsenal once at 19th but now at 3rd.This football just went so wrong! However is Arsenal 3rd spot will slip away at the end??? I'm just so nervous with the all scenarios.

hopefully chelsea's win will light a fire under their @$$, knowing a 4th place finish may now mean thursday trips to Romania.

on the last part of earlier comment ..."now that Chelsea won against Barcelona, the third spot is a MUST.....COME ON ARSENAL..." Well, since we have lost five points in our last two games, to be pushed out of next season CL now appears a possibility because Spurs seem to have more winnable fixtures than us...
What do you think?
Sam Limbert: Thanks for your comment. On paper, Spurs have easier fixtures, but sides scrapping for their lives aren't always easy. Unless they don't have a shot on goal, like Blackburn.

Another great article Sam, I look forward to every blog you post.
I've got a question for you: Arteta has been a great addition and slots in superbly alongside Song, so where does that leave Wilshere for next year? Is there a chance that Jack moves up the field into the attacking midfielder's role that Rosicky has been playing so well at? Or should he stay in the holding role he excelled at last season? Another great thing Arteta brings to the table are his long range strikes, which adds a great element to our attack because a lot of times in the past we've been guilty of trying to pass the ball all the way into the net rather than cracking some shots from outside the box to keep the defenders honest and prevent them from sitting back on us.
When everyone is healthy we've got great depth and skill in our midfield, so if we sign someone maybe it should be a good striker to support RVP and another solid center back to support LK and TV. What do you think Sam?
Arsenal!!
Sam Limbert: Thanks for your comment. When he's fit, Jack could definitely play in an advanced role with Arteta deeper. We definitely need someone up front to support RvP. I think Per Mertesacker is a good third centre back, but we'll need another one if we sell Djourou.

Now that we lost to Stoke, the third spot is no longer in our hand! Thus the prospect of non participation in Champions League loom large! What a scary end to this season.

Oh dear. And it was all going so well.I suppose tomrorow the sports pages will be full of unlucky Arsenal and super Wayne headlines. They'll say that we didn't win because we were just a bit unlucky, and the Wolves keeper played a blinder .Bollocks.Just twenty-four hours after Man United showed exactly how a top-four team should despatch relegation-fighting rubbish, we pulled out a typical Arsene Wenger performance and failed to see off the worst away side in the Premier League. After taking that early lead we should have gone for the jugular and then ripped them to shreds before half-time. Instead we let them back in by conceding our usual soft goal, and then had to chase the game all over again. And yes, Hennessney played well, but I ask you: would he have withstood United at Old Trafford? I think you know the answer. The most depressing thing about today was watching garbage like Arshavin and Chamakh come on and asking myself: Is this all we've got? For the umpteenth time this season we've needed some inspiration from the bench and have had nothing to call on except these two clowns.I've got an embarrassing, horrible confession to make: I've just been watching the Spurs v Norwich game on Sky. I was, of course, hoping that the Canaries would take a least two points off our dear north London rivals, but alas it was not to be. What struck me most about watching the team in white was just how much money has been spent developing their side in the last three or four years. And while they seem to have gone from strength to strength we have managed to sell off so much quality, and have now declined to the point where many people believe that they have a better squad than ours.It does beg the question: where the hell are we going now? It looks that we have now been reduced to a club whose only ambition is to finish fourth. Just like Spurs. That's sad. I always thought that we were bigger than that.Whatever happens this season, come the summer there has to be a major rethink about where the club is going. A successful formula for the club has to involve SERIOUS financial investment and a genuine commitment to take on City and United and to try and win the Premier League. Second-rate bargain buys and promising kids just won't do any more. And we must keep hold of our superstars like Van Persie even if it means paying them big, big, wages.Finishing below Spurs just isn't acceptable. Ever. 10 3

Cygan Frustration is part of the whole experience, I don't know how it would have been if we had never been fraterustd about anything, though I'd love for us to go through a few seasons with Zero things to be fraterustd about. And as for the same things happening in the last 7 years, Man City have spent a lot of money, made many signings and have loads of world class players (mercenaries). They have now spent for 3 consecutive seasons (~transfer windows) and all they have won is 1 FA cup. They should never drop points, ever. With that kind of talent/spending I'd expect 38 wins in the league. Of course their outlook seems positive, and they might well win a lot more trophies in the years to come or they might crash and burn, who knows what's in store? Wenger could have made signings at key junctures in seasons gone by and it might have been the difference between success and being close' but yesterday's draw was not down to transfer spending. We didn't really play well at Villa, but won, we played better but a few sloppy minutes in the first half meant we only got a draw. Life goes on.We must sign a quality striker and possibly add a full back on loan but that is for the weeks to come, to connect that to the disappointment of yesterday is hardly appropriate. Had we put a few goals past Wolves, nobody would be fraterustd and we'd still need signings in January but whether or not we sign someone had nothing to do with the game. In fact the game might be more reason to do some transfer business, but we'll wait and see. If you feel Wenger isn't under enough pressure, go ahead and do whatever you feel will put him under pressure, you're a fan and it should be within your rights I'm sure. To say the reason we dropped points against Fulham/Wolves is because he's not under pressure is silly though. 3 0

About
Sam Limbert: My retirement as a football player came at the age of 14 due to being rubbish, it's fair to say I was more Kaba Diawara than Thierry Henry, so I turned my focus to writing about the game. I'm a lifelong Arsenal fan and have been lucky enough to watch the team across England and Europe. My favourite Gunner of all time is Dennis Bergkamp, and the 2004 Invincibles is the greatest side I've ever seen in English football. I try to be positive about the Arsenal as it's the hope that keeps us going! Follow me on twitter @SamsMatchReport.
