After the football year for Arsenal was generally quite forgettable, 2011 ended well with the win over QPR, meaning that we finished the year in the top four. Considering where we were earlier in the season, to be in the top four going into the New Year is a superb effort by everyone at the club.
We have been helped massively by the weekend’s results, with Chelsea, Tottenham, Manchester United and Manchester City all dropping points. As I mentioned after the Aston Villa match, this period of the season is all about results, and of the top clubs, we got the best one at the weekend. It does add a bit more frustration to the Wolves game, as a win there would have put us in an even better position, but it’s hard to complain where we are, given where we’ve had to come from this season.
The QPR match should have been a lot more comfortable than just a 1-0 win, however we learnt our lesson from Wolves and were solid at the back for most of the game. Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny were both very good, whilst Francis Coquelin gave a good account of himself when asked to play in an unfamiliar left back position.
We were guilty of missing some great opportunities during the game, emphasising the need for another striker to help van Persie with goal scoring. Theo Walcott was guilty of the worst miss as he raced through on goal and pulled his effort horribly wide. The break away for the chance was good, Walcott’s first touch was excellent, but his finish was terrible. With Thierry Henry poised to re-join the club, a quiet lesson for Theo about finishing when one-on-one could be beneficial for everyone. Gervinho also missed a good opportunity from close range. We were fortunate our poor finishing didn’t cost us points.
Talking of finishing, it’s impossible to not mention Thierry Henry. I’m very excited about his return, even if he turns out to be slightly rubbish. I’ll be staggered if there are any Gooners who aren’t excited about seeing Thierry in the red and white again. I honestly don’t think it’ll damage his legacy as fans just need to not expect him to be the player he used to be. We need a short term solution to losing players to the African Cup of Nations, and for two months, I doubt we could have got anyone better than Thierry Henry, regardless of whether he used to play for us. The fact he loves the club and puts on a smile on Arsenal fans’ faces makes him a good signing. If he scores one goal to win a game, signing him will be completely worth it.
With the January transfer window now open, as always, there is a lot of press speculation about who Arsene Wenger will sign. A long term striker has to be a priority, and if the Lukasz Podolski rumours are true, then he’d be a good signing. Hopefully signing Henry won’t make Arsene refuse to sign another striker, because we’ll be in the same limited striker situation in March as we are now when Thierry goes back to America.
The more immediate problem is at full back. We had been doing quite well without any regular full backs for the last few weeks, but now Thomas Vermaelen is out for a couple of weeks, and Ignasi Miquel has mysteriously disappeared from the last few match day squads, we could have another 2006, Mathieu Flamini, situation. Francis Coquelin plugged the gap when Vermaelen went off on Saturday, but there will be a lot of pressure on the Frenchman as opposing teams will target our left hand side as a weakness. Kieran Gibbs and Bacary Sagna might return before the end of the month, however we have some big games before they might come back.
Ideally, we want to bring in a left back who will be able to go straight into the team and won’t have to get up to speed. The only name that’s been mentioned in the press has been Wayne Bridge. He’s barely played any football this season, so he’d need time to regain some match fitness. Added to that, I thought Bridge struggled at West Ham last season, plus Bridge caused one of my worst football moments when he knocked us out of the Champions League in 2004. The problem is that there are very few left backs who’d be good, and available for a loan. I won’t be surprised if we make do with Coquelin for a few weeks and hope Vermaelen, Gibbs or Sagna return soon.
We now have a very quick turnaround for the trip to the banks of the river to face Fulham. They were smashed by Manchester United, but got a good draw at Chelsea, so it’s hard to know which Fulham team will turn up. Having played them relatively recently at the Emirates, the team should be under no illusions about this match being easy.
I initially thought Robin van Persie would be rested for the QPR match, and ultimately it was good that he wasn’t, however I’ll be very surprised if he starts at Craven Cottage. Two matches in three days is tough for most players, but when you’ve got the injury record that van Persie has, it’s a massive risk for him play two sets of 90 minutes in a little over 72 hours. As we’re still waiting for official confirmation of the signing of Thierry Henry, Marouane Chamakh is likely to lead the line. I think he’ll find it difficult against Brede Hangeland, so whilst he probably won’t start, van Persie will have to be on the bench in case of an emergency.
With all of the teams above us in the table playing later in the week, a win would apply some pressure on them before the week off for the FA Cup. It would be a massive shame to waste the great ending to 2011 by starting badly in 2012.

Great article once again. I think its worth mentioning that Traore had a decent duel with Walcott although maybe that was just the extra motivation of playing against his former team. Mr Wenger must know something I don't because Traore was sold right after Clichy. I also remember this period last year when we gooners were screaming for a goalkeeper to the point where we had to re-sign Lehmann. People have seem to forgot that we still haven't signed a keeper and our back up is Fabianski.

Great review of our situation as always. Still wondering what happened with Park - he reports for Korean military duty in less than eighteen months, when will we use him? He's at best the fourth choice central striker. Would much prefer to continue using Coquelin at left back relative to Bridge, he's played there at least twice this season and looked capable. Can't comment knowledgeably on the Podolski signing, but very believable.
Sam Limbert: Thanks for the comment. We do only have Park for two seasons, making the fact we're not really using him slightly stranger.

Completely agree about Henry, and I think he should be considered to start against Leeds next week. Cannot wait to see him play with AOC in the FA Cup. As for a left back I see Wenger looking abroad, probably France for a short term solution. I would like RVP and Arteta to get a rest tomorrow, and hopefully Ramsey, Rosicky, and Chamakh can step up. I predict a draw, but Arsenal can pull it off.

I'd have to say I agree with most of this article, Sam.
I do still have a sizable wishlist, though.
1) A top quality defender. I just don't have trust in our defense. I'd even settle for anyone that can get Djourou of the pitch.
2) We need a striker. I think everyone can see this.
3) A creative midfielder. Ramsey is not it. Song, while he has played very well, isn't the passer that we need either. Van Persie has made the most of his chances this year- imagine if he had someone supplying even more and possibly easier chances.
4) Tactical flexibility. Maybe that comes with different players, but I see so many times when we don't attack the opponents weak link- it drives me mad.
It is a good start to the year- with a win, and to be in fourth place-but we are surely not the finished article. Go you Arsenal!

12.5 million for Podolski? I want Wenger on it now. A German international? Please Wenger don't be Ebenezer Scrooge and hurt Van Persie for a few sheckles. We need him, please go get him.

I think Park should be starting; he has shown glimpses of promise in the limited sighting we have had of him. Somehow, I cant imagine Chamakh scoring from other than a header, n neither of our wingers seem to like putting in decent crosses consistently.
One thing to note from the QPR game is Arshavin's overall increased effort level, not to mention a really good pass. Also, we need to start finishing games off; both Gerv and Theo have been disappointing recently, making a case for Ox to start playing more.
Sam, do you think it was a mistake to sell Traore in the summer? I thought he was decent from what we saw of him last yr, and he has done well for QPR n stayed fit, so perhaps we should have kept him, esp since Gibbs is permanently injured.
Sam Limbert: Thanks for the comment. I don't think it was a mistake to sell Traore as I think Gibbs and Santos are better than him, we've just been unfortunate with injuries. Traore is a good player but it was always going to be hard for him to play well for Arsenal again after that Manchester United match.

Nice blog.
Firstly, i'd like to comment on how truly amazing Robin Van Persie has been this season for Arsenal. It always baffles me (being a dutchman) that he doesnt perform in this manner for the Dutch national team. He's obviously got a fantastic goalscoring ability but hes also a great player technically with a lot of vision to help set up teammates. I feel virtually every dangerous Arsenal attack, RVP has some influence on. Furthermore, I think he's doing a splendid job as captain, motivating his teammates.
On the topic of Thierry Henry, i'm not so fond of it. Thierry is a big legend at the club but he's no longer a premier player. Obviously he's still got experience and talent but he is not in RVP's league for example. I truly hope that he does not disrupt the assertiveness RVP has gained over the course of this season. I think it is a foolish risk to take, even if all parties mean well.
Finally, if Robin Van Persie can stay healthy Arsenal can not only make 4th but win EPL.

Considering the dreadful start and how much ground the team has made up it's hard not to feel pretty good about 4th spot currently. In spite of all the injuries the defense has shown massive improvement, RVP is on fire, early season signings good, overall good team spirit. With players like Wilshere and Sagna coming back there is plenty of reason for future optimism. Teams above us will continue to drop points.
There are some flaws. I would like to see the team can play with a bit more urgency and creativity (if it's possible to have both) and of course finish better.
Henry's return will be welcome if for no other reason than locker room/leadership influence he is likely to provide. While I think he can still offer something on the field as well, I agree we can't expect the #14 of old so hopefully the Podolski talk will materialize. Please no Wayne Bridge! I would rather see Coquelin continue to fill in at LB or forgotten man Miquel.
Keep climbing the table in 2012!

What is happening at Arsenal? The ambition is to finish fourth! The defense is injured so we are getting strikers! As much as I love Henry, I think it is a retrograde step to bring him back. Where are all the young players Arsenal is so famous for nurturing? Give some of them a go.
(Who was the last 'home grown' player of note?)
Wayne Bridge can't get a game anywhere else, how can he possibly be good enough to play at Arsenal?

We definitely need a full back and a top-rate striker. if the signing of Henry is true, i welcomes it even if it is for only a short term but we still need a potent striker because if any thing happens to RVP then we are done.Marouane Chamakh has been hugely disappointing in all his outings and i have no confidence in him. i just hope the Lukas Podolski's interest is for real - he is a good striker any day. up gunners

As usual, you are always on point Sam,couldn't have been written any better!I'd like to add some suggestions and see what you tink of em!firstly offload d dead wood in d team ie squillaci,Chamakh, Diaby and Arshavin!Bring reinforcements:i like podolski, henry is an ok addition,Mvila would b lovely, bridge cannot b dat bad,den maybe hire a good defensive coach and hope4 d best!

The dreadful feeling of watching Djourou week after week on the team sheet will never go away. Today, he managed to get sent off and the player introduced to fill for him was Sebastien Squillaci. Wenger still needs to buy a competent CB, because FB injuries aside, we still concede goals aplenty.
The creative midfielder can wait, since a combination of Ramsey, Benayoun and Rosicky has worked to a lesser extent.
If Wenger choses to play Oxlade-Chamberlain more often, I see no reason to buy Podolski more than a defender signing (although I admit it would be nice not to see the inoffensive Chamakh again).
I just really hope we do not see Bridge or another one of Wenger's rubbish-division gambles.

Arsenal needs strikers that can put the in the net aside Van persie needs. Arsenal is suffering because of this obvious problem. If rumor of Podolski coming is true, that will be a welcome relief cause he's a proven & tested striker and in the best form ever in his club career. With the spate of injuries in the defense line, what we need now should actually be a utility defender.

Did you see how Van Persie scored and celeberated with the bench but ignored Wenger?
 |
Posted by Mabius on 01/03/2012
Sam, your write-ups this season, have provided hope when there was very little (Thanks). I know transfer rumors are just that, but wanted to get your take on finally letting Walcott go? His inability to get a cross into the box or reliable service to anyone in a scoring position has cost us points dearly. We've only managed 4 points out of the last three games, and it was an assist from Arshavin that unlocked that goal at QPR. I am tired of the endless chances this kid gets, especially without a result! If the rumors are true, off load the guy to Chelsea, he can't come back to hurt us, and put the money to good use. Besides we have OX, he deserves at least half as many chances as Walcott has had. He has 18 months left on his contract, and is demanding 85K per week, time to cash in now.....Your thoughts? Regards,
Sam Limbert: Thanks for your comment. I think Walcott is worth keeping as he'd generally had a good season, he just needs to be rotated more often. I think there's too much pressure on him to provide RvP with chances, and some of that pressure needs to be taken off him by others.

Why is Squilachi still in Arsenal? the guy is an obvious waste of resources if he is still collecting his wages.i ve been trying to remember any game he played in this season that we won, but i ve been coming up against a brick wall. He came in at newcastle last season while we were 4 solid goals up & we conceeded 4 goals in return. He came in yesterday against fulham while we were 1 goal up & we conceeded 2 in 14 fourteen minutes. i was seriously gutted for the 2nd goal as Squilachi actually headed the back into our area & it was a nice pass for Zamora. This guy should never step unto the pitch again for whatever reason. i ll rather gamble Chamberlain in defense than the pathetic SEBASTIAN SQUILACHI

Same thing over and over . All teams droping points, we could have closed the gap at the top, but wait, the diffence again. Coquelin not bad for new and Koscielny ok,Djourou it's a desaster, can't clear a ball. He's a liability, while Mertesacker slow, big but can't make a tackle or jump an inch, beaten several times at Fulham. We need a tough english center who can throuw his body in front of goal and defend like a Cahill or Samba, otherwise we won't see any truphy. English managers will always exploit our vulnerability in set pieces or crosses and even a 2:0 lead won't be sufficient for 3 points. Up front we need a goal scorer, a shooter besides RVP. Gerv is good at running, but can't score, can't shoot and only makes endless circles as he holds and holds the ball til is surrounded by opposition. We need a strong striker as RVP can't score 3 goals a game. It's like playing 3-6-1, creating a lot and scoring v. little. Teams aren't affraid any more. Look at the last 5-6 games scores.

Wenger seems to be getting stubborner day by day. He refuse to buy any player. We supporters wonder what is going on at the club. Do we have money to buy player? If yes then who is stopping whom? They publish financial stats every year but where does all those millions of pounds go? Wenger can give up if he want to. We can't watch this club loosing matches to Fulhams or Blackburns anymore.

I wasn't surprised by the Fulham scoreline. Seeing Djourou in the lineup confirmed my predictions. We were to lose. His facial expression always depicts a person without confidence, unsure of what he does. In comes Squillaci and I would bet he had a hand in our second goal;never mind he may have been nowhere near the action was. AW just have to stop making obvious selection mistakes. Play Ignasi and Park more often......

Hi Sam, good analysis. I await your assessment of the Fulham game but something tragic about our defence. I agree with many of the Gunners about Djourou and Squillaci. While Djourou can play well at times,he's not good enough especially when as a stand-in fullback, and too slow to react. As for Squillaci, I groaned when I saw him getting ready to come on, and my fears came true...his wayward header gifted Zamora the chance. Can't wait to see the backs of some of these blundering clowns!

What was the '2006 Mathieu Flamini situation'?
Sam Limbert: All of our full backs were injured and Mathieu Flamini was a make shift left back for a large part of the second half of the season, and was part of the defence that broke the Champions League record for time without conceding a goal.

Cannot figure out why Arsene is not recruiting any defender or other players. It is clear from what you have of this team today, even ten years to come there will not be a single silverware. Football is no more only a game of talent and strong willpower. Teams should spend and spend well to build a good team. Arsenal has been having this problem of defence since nearly ten years. Valued players who have gone have never been replaced. Viera, Henry, Adams, Ashley cole, Martin keown , lee dixon and now recently Fabregas and Nasri. Arsenal could have purchased, Arturo Vidal, who is now doing wonders at Juventus,Freddy Guarin is now on sale. Gary Cahil is now gone to Chelsea for 8 to 9 M. Samba is still to come. In the mean time Arsene is just waiting.Inspite of the fact that we can buy and there are plenty of players waiting to come to Arsenal. What could be the reason for this wait. Are we deliberately letting Totenham get the better of us.

Arsene wenger has not changed his strtegy nor will he do so in the near future. Arsenal has been kept on records for years without a trophy. Is that what you call a good performance. The players are not consistent and they lack skill of being an experienced players. They are weak at corner shooting, there is alck of coordination and synergy among the players and no goal congruent.
You have taken wrong decision to have transferred some good performers and now you are left with young burt poor performer. What is the difference between your player and Messi , they know the rules but they need to be accustomed with playing techniques to keep possession of ball and seize opportunities to aim right on target. They need more practice and need to be speedy.
Thanks

About
Sam Limbert: My retirement as a football player came at the age of 14 due to being rubbish, it's fair to say I was more Kaba Diawara than Thierry Henry, so I turned my focus to writing about the game. I'm a lifelong Arsenal fan and have been lucky enough to watch the team across England and Europe. My favourite Gunner of all time is Dennis Bergkamp, and the 2004 Invincibles is the greatest side I've ever seen in English football. I try to be positive about the Arsenal as it's the hope that keeps us going! Follow me on twitter @SamsMatchReport.
