Arsenal
Posted by Sam Limbert on 08/29/2011

It's taken me over an hour to begin this blog post. It's been almost impossible to know where to start after Sunday's demolition, humiliation and disgrace at Old Trafford. Losing 8-2 in any situation, in any match, at any level, is simply unacceptable by the high standards set by Arsenal Football Club. It's not like we have a divine right to not get thrashed as reputations in sport ultimately mean nothing, but no Premier League side should just accept losing 8-2 as a bad day at the office.

For Arsenal, the infrastructure of the club, the fans, the stadium, the reputation, the recent record in the league, the manager and some of the players are of an extremely high standard. However, such a defeat as we received on Sunday has been coming for a while. Despite playing well last Wednesday and raising optimism amongst fans, there are underlying issues at the club that need addressing, both in the squad and higher up the Arsenal hierarchy. It's tough for all fans to have to face the reality of the situation we're now in as a club, and we can only hope that this result is so embarrassing and humiliating for those inside the Arsenal, that those issues are now properly addressed.

It's easy to play the blame game and single out certain individuals. However that doesn't help in these situations. The club as a whole has to be looked at. It isn't the fault of the players that they're picked to play for Arsenal, that's down to the manager, the coaching staff and those who scout the players in the first place. However once on the pitch, the players should take some responsibility for it themselves. We've seen some of them do great things with a ball in the past, but for some, greatness is seen all too rarely.

Then there is the board level. I definitely prefer the way Arsenal are run compared to most clubs in the Premier League, and the manager is rightly given almost complete control of the squad. There is still a sense that Arsenal do things ‘the right way’, and I love that about the club. However, I think they’ve got caught up in the ‘Arsenal way’. As much as I respect the work the club do, I think they became complacent about always being in the top four and staying near the top of the Premier League. Whilst other clubs have been strengthening, we’ve gone backwards. I’ve got a sense that the board could have assumed that Arsene will just work some magic and therefore they wouldn’t have to engage in money wars with the likes of Manchester City and Chelsea.

With the wage structure, I think it’s important that it exists at the club, although we’re effectively holding ourselves back against our rivals’ uncapped wages. We can’t compete from that point of view with those around us. Instead of demanding immediate and rash spending, should there be an evaluation of the wage structure? It’s all very well offering big amounts for players, but with big transfer fees usually comes big wages, and realistically that doesn’t fit into the Arsenal structure. Obviously the case of Fabregas was different due to his emotional attachment to Barcelona, but with others we aren’t seeing the benefit of our development of them due to higher wages being offered elsewhere. So as much as people will moan at Arsene Wenger, he can’t just alter the internal structure of the club on his own overnight, that has to come from those above him. Unfortunately, it seems like they haven’t been active enough in supporting Arsene to compete in the modern market.

In most football clubs though, the manager has to bear the brunt of fans’ anger towards the team. So far, Arsene Wenger hasn’t been active enough in improving the squad in the transfer market. Whether that’s solely down to him, only those inside the club will know. Ultimately though, he has the final say on who we do and don’t sign, and who is needed to improve the squad. There are two days to go before the window shuts, and the three key areas that need improvement haven’t been addressed. I don’t have any other strong memories of any other managers at Arsenal, so will always praise and respect Arsene Wenger for what he has done for the club, although everyone could see what was missing from the team at the end of last season. That has become even clearer during pre-season and into the start of the campaign following player sales. Why we’re leaving it this late to improve the squad, I don’t know.

Whether it’s the club not wanting to spend big, Wenger being too stubborn, or the manager believing too much in his young players, the fact is that Arsenal are being left behind in the Premier League. If we want to compete at the top of the league, we have to spend money. Wenger and the board may not like it, but the reality is that we can’t stay at the top without spending more. The Manchester United game was an all too graphic way of seeing this.

I’m not saying the manager should be sacked, not by any means, but he, along with the rest of the club, have let Arsenal fans down this summer. As much as we were optimistic after the Udinese game, a top class team like Manchester United were always likely to beat us. The manner of the defeat and the capitulation in the second half were disgraceful, and were it not so close to the transfer deadline that we couldn’t sell a lot of those players, they can count themselves lucky to ever get the chance to wear the cannon again; a cannon that means a lot to vast numbers of people, but clearly doesn’t mean a lot to some of them.

It’s hard to analyse the match in too much depth as there was so much that was wrong with it.

Manchester United did score some excellent goals, but all were avoidable defensively. Most teams would struggle to face Manchester United with three of their first choice back four missing, but they wouldn’t ship eight. Wojciech Szczesny in goal didn’t even have a bad game. Carl Jenkinson looked out of his depth, Armand Traore was frankly awful and the centre halves didn’t cover themselves in glory. Given they were our first choice pairing for most of last season, you wonder how we even finished in the top four.

Tomas Rosicky and Andrey Arshavin looked disinterested, Aaron Ramsey was swamped in midfield and Robin van Persie couldn’t hold the team up on his own, plus his penalty was poor. Theo Walcott, although he scored, didn’t get enough of the ball and make enough of an impression against Patrice Evra. One of the only men to come out with any credit was Francis Coquelin, and he was only there because of Song and Frimpong’s indiscipline.

As mentioned earlier, we should not be in a position that, with two days to go before the window shuts, we have no idea who will be in the Arsenal squad for the majority of the season. Nicklas Bendtner, Sebastien Squillaci, Manuel Almunia and Armand Traore could all go, meaning we need at least four players to sign in two days. It appears South Korean captain Park Chu Young is close to coming, along with left back Andre Santos from Fenerbahce. Whoever comes in must show like they want to be at Arsenal, and must improve the squad.

The Manchester United defeat was so bad, it appears to have kicked Arsene into action in the transfer market. As painful and horrific as it was, it could have been necessary to get the club moving forward again. If an 8-2 defeat isn’t a kick in the backside for the players, the manager and the board, then I don’t know what is.

Sunday showed all areas of the club need improving, bar one. The fans in the away end were fantastic. They were a credit to the club, and to Gooners everywhere. The offer of the club to pay for another away ticket was the correct one, as those there should be rewarded for their loyalty, and they’re the sort of people we want at away games in the future. If the players showed half the commitment that lot did, then there’s no way we’d have conceded eight. Those fans at Old Trafford should be examples to all of us as Arsenal fans, that no matter what the situation your team is in, you support the club. Criticise, analyse and scrutinise afterwards, but during the game, support the team and let them know how much you want those with a cannon on their chest, to succeed.

In a massive straw clutching exercise, and something that isn’t really a consolation after the weekend, but it does at least raise half a smile, a glance at the league table does at least show Tottenham below us and at the bottom. Relegation six pointer at White Hart Lane on the 2nd October? More performances like the Manchester United one and it’s a strong possibility.

We have two days to sort the squad out and make sure Arsene Wenger doesn’t come to an acrimonious end at Arsenal. Get on with it Arsene.

Why dosent he see this team is not good enough, imagine without Cesc this year i wont mention nasri because of his greed.buy at least four players cobined 4o million or the board should force him to buy mr wenger try to see this teAM IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH GET TO REALITY PLEASE

Posted by DrSesay on 08/29/2011

Arsene Wenger is not in the market to buy any player needed for the club. He look out for unrecognise players and try to school them in his own way. It is a good idea and it does pay somtimes owning to the fact for players like Jack Wilshere and the newly promoted Frimpong. Arsene will make unaccepted bid for players demanded by the fans and the media to make a shield for himself that he tried to sign players but his bids for the players were rejected. If Arsene Wenger is sincere he will make a reasonable offer for players. He has done a good job for the club in the past, but how long can you be singing of yesterday glory, what is happening to the team at present needs urgent attention or else the today effect will erase the yesterday glory and we are nowhere tomorrow.

Posted by RobbieD on 08/29/2011

Spot on. Something is not right behind the scenes and it's becoming increasingly apparent. I fear we will only strengthen with panic buys and have left it too late to add the needed quality to the spine of the team. Let's just hope Yossi Benayoun isn't the answer Wenger has in mind.

Posted by Dan on 08/29/2011

Traore made me cry. I couldn't believe we had some that bad in the club. Jenkinson was thrown at the deep end so its not his fault although he had a assist. The defense needs a make over period.

In any form of business if the manager/director do not retool or add the necessary cutting edge technology to their operation then that business will not be heading for trouble. All around Arsenal the other teams are adding the required players to make them competitive and for the highly ambitious ones, trophies. As a fan here in Jamaica it pains my heart to what took place at Man U. Its a memory i long to forget.Wenger is not taking money from the bank but from sales of players and i cannot see why its so difficult to replace them. Now we will be seen as a reactive club rather than a proactive one.Two days to go and I hope the replacement will come.As seen Sunday Wenger must enter each match with a plan B. The youths that are brought in must have experience players beside them. Can you imagine what went through the mind of all those youth on the pitch Sunday? Is this the way to blood them?Come on Arsenal we are a big team.BIG UP TO THE TRAVELLING FANS ON SUNDAY. Gooner for life.

Posted by fan on 08/29/2011

Wenger's philosophy breaks down if the players that he develops do not stay around long enough to give the time, when they are experienced, to the club.

Posted by Si on 08/30/2011

Well written. I want to put a different perspective on this though. I'm probably not that much older than you, but I have seen 5 arsenal managers. What Wenger has achieved until this point is nothing short of extraordinary. We are indebted, that's not to say his job is forever protected. As many have said, other clubs with greater histories have not won a thing in more than a decade, so why are are we as Arsenal fans so spoilt & fickle? Why do we expect success?
You have cleverly pinpointed the root causes of what is a massive problem not just at Arsenal, but across the sport in general. The financial gulfs that now exist now make this less about sport and more about wealth. In my humble opinion, something needs to be done on global position to level the playing field (further than just UEFA's farcical financial fairplay). Although American sports have their faults, their ideals raised by team salary caps & the drafting system are good measures to redress the balance of power in sport

Mata is now in chelsea! We want a squard with a good second eleven. It was had on us all as in-form Man-U were luckly to have the absence of Vermalin, Song, Sagna, Giovinho, Fringpong, Wilshere, Gibbs etc... It's believed that when you sell, you get a better replacement! Now with all these kids, injuries, red cards, epl, carlin,FA, Champ.league hmmm! Wenger and board please release the money now!

Posted by Filip on 08/30/2011

Actually, I like Yossi, I think he's a great squad player and he also gives a damn, which, in the current state of affairs, our team clearly needs. Anyway, I am glad we got our butts kicked since no one, not even the French, can handle such spanking. Funny thing is, with Song and Wilshere in there, the entire complexion of the game changes; not to even mention Vermaelen and player X, soon to be purchased for whatever Everton/Bolton/Blackburn are asking for. Ashley Young is a nice player, however, has he ever had any joy vs Arsenal in the past four-five years? Wingbacks are key against MANu since they don't have a single creative player in the middle of the pitch. It was brutal watching Nani and Young feast the entire game. Umph, just writing this is making me depressed. Lets just get on with it. Go Gunners...

Posted by Gillyo on 08/30/2011

Please someone explain to me how can you say Wenger knows what he's doing when he spends the last 4 years building a team around a player that everyone knew was going away since 2009?
Secondly, I think it's insane to accuse Nasri, Cole, Viera or Fabregas of being greedy.
They are professional players being offered opportunities at top clubs. Why should they waste their careers at a club with no ambition?

Posted by Todd on 08/30/2011

Sam great blog, support the team, right on DrSesay. It's too late to bring anyone in, just like it's too late for anyone to leave. Almunia, Bentdner, weren't they supposed to be moving on? It's smoke and mirrors within Arsenal, maybe not all of AW's fault, but he is the whipping boy for fans and critics. There will be no CL next year, and the stadium will be paid off, the board doesn't care, now they are cash rich and will be looking for AW to keep them in the top 10-15 range.

Posted by peter on 08/30/2011

Nothing will change.

Posted by Sean on 08/30/2011

I have read many forum posts, news articles, and this blog. Not one of them illustrated the lack of commitment of arsenal's wall on rooneys second goal from a free kick. No one in the wall jumped to block the shot. And I even saw Koscienly move his head away from the ball screaming past him.

Is this lack of commitment and confidence?

Posted by GonnerWinIt on 08/30/2011

The signing of Park is not to strengthen the team, it is more to attract South Korean fans to follow AFC, to generate more revenue. AW is an economist, and that's how an economist thinks.

The board would have known that Cesc and Nasri were going to leave, why didn't they look for their replacements earlier? We are two days before the window closes, that means teams selling players won't have time to find replacements, so they won't sell, unless, of course, the offer is one that they can't refuse, and that means AFC will pay more than the market. I am no economist.

Posted by tango on 08/30/2011

AW weakened Arsenal systematically over the last few yrs. He sold players in many millions but not replaced them or buying cheap players of 1/2 mls. He sold Henry 24 mil, Viera? M,Adebayor 26 M, Toure 16 M, Clichy 7 M, Cesc 35 M, Nasri 25 M etc. He netted nearly 150 M over the last 3/4 yrs. He bought Jenkinson for 3 M Park 3 M. Where did the rest of 150 M gone?
AW is so much focused on making money by buying cheap and selling with big money he forgot managing the club. How can Jenkinson coming from Lge 1 goes straight to defend against Rooney?
He just saw how much money he is making immediately. Actually the club is loosing not only trophies but also pride and money. By being small team there will be much less merchandize sale, less gate income.
We lost many millions in wages for his cheap buys,
such as Benteder and Almunia whom no one wants to buy. There will be less money for sponsorship.
This year no money for CL qualification. In a yr or 2 AW will guarantee us league 1 games

Posted by Segun-Tungba on 08/30/2011

it appears as if wenger does not even know anything about soccer again everything just went from bad to worse.before i could say a word about arsene again may when the transfer window closes.

Posted by dchow on 08/30/2011

Chamberlain's first appearance for Arsenal is disappointing. Certainly does not match with Wenger's rating him as a very great player.

Posted by Patrick on 08/30/2011

The question is what's up with these small players that he keeps buying? Even as we rush to buy have u noticed that all our targets are physically small.

Posted by Edge on 08/30/2011

All the BIG teams got most, if not all, the good players off the market. What is left are second rate players who didn't even draw any interest from the BIG teams! Park Chu-Young, Andre Santos? Don't think any of the BIG teams even had them on their radars! AW and the board are apparently on panic mode. Seriously? Chelsea rejects Alex and Benayoun? Not exactly rays of hope there. Would Hazard want to join us after witnessing the 8-2 massacre? Quite frankly, I don't see us signing any top class talent til the January transfer window. (Let's not fool ourselves. Gary Cahill does not count.) By then, if we are still mid-table and out of the Champions League, it would be tough to get top players who can help immediately. Not to mention hold on to our good players! That is probably the worst case scenario but the board and AW need to realize that we are in a dangerously slippery slope here. QPR PAYING for Traore could be a sign that our luck has turned. Trying my best to be optimistic here.

Posted by DD on 08/30/2011

Why has no one pointed out its not just about getting the right players but its the TACTICS? Wenger has no plan B, his tactics are predictable. 4-5-1 has been very very inefficient for the past 6 years. Wenger gotta learn how to play defensively when most needed.

Posted by AndyE on 08/30/2011

Sam, what a fickle boy you are.

From last week's blog: "I don’t think we’ll be embarrassingly thrashed, as I did after the Liverpool game."

Now this week you are saying you knew we had is coming.

Are you like every "pundit" out there, predicting things after they happen?

Posted by wai on 08/30/2011

I am a ManU fans but while I was watching the game I head Arsenal supporting their club through the end. Well done Gunners and hope u guys get a good new defense and midfield player before the window end.

Posted by Kenneth Lim on 08/30/2011

Arsene Wenger keep saying we should bring in only quality players who are better than the current players. Look at the players he brought in and intend to bring. Are they better or even equal to the players we have now or just left? I doubt so.

Look at the players that went to Man U, Man City, Chelea and Liverpool. Are they better than our current players or at least equal? Yes. Most of them are.

To name a few that Arsene refused to pay and bring in:

1. Ashley Young - Man U
2. Chris Smalling - Man U
3. Sergio Aguero - Man City
4. Edin Dzeko - Man City
5. Charlie Adam - Liverpool
6. Steward Downing - Liverpool
7. Juan Mata - Chelsea

Look at the players he tried to bring in but unwilling to pay anything worthy for them? Arsene is shameful and keep hiding behind his lies and refuse to admit his mistake. It is time we get someone new to be in Arsenal. Arsene should be gone 2 seasons ago. I wonder why he is still here and why people still think he should not be sacked.

glade to see andre santos, park chu yong, benayoun and cahill join the club. but i still fell club need giant centre back like mertersacker and creative playmaker like sneijder. if wenger buy 5 player, it's great. hopefully 2 days is enough!

Posted by DavidC on 08/30/2011

Sam, good comments. I think the immediate things for Arsenal to do now are :- pay the price for the recognised players that we needed to strengthen, especially in central defence. Even if we have to pay at a slight premium. We need to save the season and demonstrate to the current squad that we are doing something to put the situation right. From a morale point of view this is necessary, otherwise, if we lose that confidence in the squad, it will take much longer to rectify ( an example of that, is our results after the League Cup Final defeat from last year ). If we don't act quickily, it will be too late before we realise.

Posted by NS on 08/30/2011

The manager has to understand, it is not about technical abilities or strategy right now. The players shows no self-belief and morale is an all time low. Unfortunately this cant be solved by coaching or training. The team has lost its competitiveness and killer instinct (for many years now)!! There is a lack of experience winners among the lot. Arsene is definitely not helping by being protective and complacent. The Board should know that 7 years without a trohpy - its time for a new direction & management. Arsene would be fired for not WINNING over 7 years (not one or two but 7 yrs). Patience is an understatement to describe the supporters of the club. No one is bigger then the club (That includes Mr.Kroenke, the board and Mr. Wenger)

Posted by Andy Vale on 08/30/2011

It's all well and good saying "SIGN THE BEST PLAYERS" but who is going to want to join Arsenal at the moment? Unless they scout an absolute diamond (Hernandez style, not Bebé) then none of the top-level players are really going to want to join for anything approaching a reasonable price.

What's more, all the clubs know how desperate they are and that they have money to spend, so the hope of getting a bargain out of any of them is practically zero.

As a United fan, watching that game was not as enjoyable as it would've been in years gone by. It just felt cruel after a while, the same as it would if we were tanking some non-league side off the park (although at least they would look like they were trying.) But as you said, it's been coming and while I concede that there were a few issues, this situation is all their fault.

Posted by Plzbuy on 08/30/2011

2 reasons why Arsenal should buy:

1. Fabregas won 2 trophies in 6 years at Arsenal. He did that in 2 weeks at Barca.

2. Arsenal have about 80 million for player recruitment (40 million summer kitty + sales of fab, nasri, eboue, emmanuel-thomas and after deducting for the players already bought eg. Gervinho)

If Arsene is still delusional about "which players can strengthen his squad", I have a long list of them. Maybe even Bebe can.

Posted by Will on 08/30/2011

Re: RobbieD
At least a panic buy is a buy! I won't get into who we actually need - that's fairly unanimous (Cahill, Samba, Parker, etc) and has been bandied about far too often it's become hackneyed.

It just seems as though everything to do with the club is beyond belief at the moment. A friend of mine can't believe that we Gunners would doubt Arsene after everything he's achieved and, whilst that's true to an extent, it's all about the here and now; players have their sell-by date and are shipped out if not up to scratch despite their past achievements and it shouldn't be much different with the manager.

Although I wouldn't want him to go unless absolutely necessary, Wenger is replaceable, contrary to many pundits' proclamations, and maybe a change might be for the best; Someone who has a new philosphy and won't suffer fools. I'm willing to give him till the end of the season of course as that'll be the correct time to gauge whether realistic aims have been reached or not.

Posted by Keith on 08/30/2011

Arsenal is in crisis. Look at the players AW is scrambled to sign at the last minute! They are the unwanted or second fringe players in the late 20s!!

Why can't we buy a decent CB like Cahill or Samba at the early stage is really beyond me. And to bid Cahill for 6 mil pound is insulting!

Didn't we have backup plans to buy midfielders when we are not sure if Nasri and Fabregas will stay? Didn't we already know that we need to beef up the defence end of last season?

Few months ago, when AW said that everyone was keeping their cards close to them and we would only see transfer activities end of July, I began to doubt him! I think he is the only poker player at the table playing by himself.

His hurry now to buy whatever players who are left in the market showed that he is not prepared for this season and he has totally lost the plot. The fear has arrived that we may be relegated this season. Maybe it's easier to win a trophy in the lower division, he may think. This is sick!

I Dont what to say. Whats wrong with arsenal. Whats wrong with wenger and the players? Who knows what the man is thinking. Even championship side with unknown players will not lose at this margin to MU its really bad. Injuries and suspention is not an excuse. Wenger says there is no quality in the market. Even our team dont have quality. You call Asharvin, Djouro and some of the others quality? We are good one day and the other we are very bad not consistant at all. AShavin, Rosicky, Djouro, Theo, Ramsey are clueless to whom to pass and where to run and often wasting the position. Dont we have tactics to play? Something has to be done. What is Chamack is doing on the bench for. If he is not good enough sell him or give him time to play in games and improve. We need to play 4-4-2 or 4-3-3and not 4-5-1 it is not working. Please wenger listen and buy few good player with experiance we might even not qualify for champion league next season. Please!!!!!! Wenger Please Buy

Beautiful presentation from a loyal gunner. Lets hope we buy Gary Cahill and that nobody is 'playing pranks' behind the scene.

From MU fans

actually since i love mu so much always heard arsenal is big big big rival...n respectful them very much...from this games just few thing need to solve it only...defenders , midfield n contracts for player...no need explain much...ur all style playing still smooth n excellent...but the main problem one day didnt solve it properly then will continue suffer n disaster y i say that ??? U can see Man City, Chelsea n Liverpool other UEFA league team...more coming fixtures will be tough games...especially contract of player cant just restrict 30 yrs old=1 year contract only...this is so ridiculous n not make sense...exp is very important to guide young player no one just born out will super understand how to play football, theory n practical must make it in same line...no matter how still say sry for tat day match but is hope tat wenger n the board WAKE UP n clearly understand in this century so modern football if dont do some invest impossible become strong n stable,gd luck

Just before last season's Carling cup final, the team was having dinner. A wicked witch suddenly appeared and said " if you lose on Sunday you will lose confidence, you will get only 12 points in your last 11 games and finish fourth. You will start next season with 1 point from 3 games and lose 8-2 to Man U. Your manager will grow even madder and more stubborn. The only way that your manager will rise to his former glory and the team return to the English football elite is if Arsene admits to mistakes and the need for change. He must also recognize an alternative system may be needed sometimes, young players needs experience to guide them and that fans are more important than him. Otherwise fans will be punished even though they love the club.

Bring on the punishment I guess.

I guess we are doomed.

Posted by alex butama on 08/30/2011

me think AW gravely miscalculated. He never thought being trounced 8-2. He probably thought he can get away with a mild beating from Manchester and go back to building his cheap 1/2 a mill players into a formidable team, someones he could sell for tens of millions in a few years and to hell with the fans. It really doesn't matter what he has done for the club for the past fifteen years. What matters is what he is currently doing. Before he came in we never been beaten 8 - 2. At least not for 100 years.AW leaves in the past. It is time for him to go and leave someone else with new plans and hopes.

Posted by tonyd on 08/30/2011

Worst thing is the pity from the Man U supporters! How low have we sunk ?

Posted by Leonarta on 08/30/2011

Great article,I have to agree with you on this one. The club not willing to spend money on players might just be down to the board of directors and not necessary wenger. I don't blame the Fabregas move as he always wanted to move back to barcelona but Nasri could have stayed had he been offered a higher wage and the arsenal fans cold show more support by not booing him while he was still here although it prob wouldn't changed his mind. I felt nasri acted professionaly and played to his best until the very end and he could have been our most important player after fab left.

Joey Barton would have been a good signing and so would parker. Buying those 2(although impossible now for barton) plus cahill and jagielka would still see arsenal make a 'profit' in the transfer market. These 4 players would at most equal Fab's 40m move and there's still the nasri money.Even now,I feel out squad will be good enough with cahill, parker and jagielka.

Posted by Jed on 08/30/2011

It was frustrating watching that match. I have been waiting for this post from you, Sam, to see how you would put things into perspective. You have rightfully pointed out that behind the scenes, something is going amiss. It has really been quite a while since we've seen astute signings in the mould of Vieira, petit, overmars, Henry, pires. Players who were already in the international squad of a recognizable footballing country. Mertesacker and park chu young(I don't mind if he is as effective as bolton's Korean player) definitely fits this mould. Board of directors really need to decide now to go all out in support of Arsene's efforts to bring up the standard of the playing squad. It is still early days, but we want to break out of last year's carling cup final's shadow and get on with the season from now onwards. Go Gooners!

Posted by Todd Brown on 08/30/2011

Watching the boys go round at Old Trafford had a stark resemblance to how we play our Carling Cup games - put the young guys in there and see how far we can go.
I understand we had many absentees, but when you look at clubs like Man U and Chelsea, the gaps always get filled with decent players. Answer me this...... Why wasn't Sneijder ever considered as a Fabregas replacement. I know it sounds un-Arsenal but take a leaf out of Real and barca's books..... Throw money at "recognized" players, guys who have played in the big time and build it that way, all the while injecting younger guys into the squad every now and again.
I'm from Australia and I am as loyal as an Arsenal fan will get, I don't get the chance to experience see the boys play live, but I don't miss watching them play 3 & 4am in the morning. But to watch what happened at Man U, I feel such disappointment for the coming season., but if i could, I'd be at every game, home or away, cheering our guys on!!!!!

iam tired, tired and tired of what i am hearing from Wenger, if he is to lose 4 more games this season, he must go. people please help me pus this gentlement.....last w3eekend was a big embarassment in arsenal history

Posted by Maran on 08/30/2011

It is utterly depressing. What on earth Wenger was doing? I think he has reached a point of no return, and slightly short of insanity. I cannot believe how this report does not take it any further than reflecting Arsene's past achievements and moderating on the loss. For heaven sake, let us be honest. Everyone saw it coming. And 3 months was a long time to resolve the obvious. Alex got his business done well before the BPL kicked off. The rest of the teams have not only strengthened, but have built fortresses. What is holding our man. Panic buy a solution? Honestly we were looking at strenghtening the team to fight for the trophy this season. Now it looks like fight for survival. Something never heard off at Arsenal. Something is amiss. The usual suspect has lost the plot and created a tragedy at Arsenal.

Posted by Desperategunner on 08/30/2011

Just to highlight the gulf in class right now between arsenal and other top teams, barca (ok, they're the top of the top, but still) just played villareal, another CL team, missing puyol, dani alves, piqué, Maxwell and adriano, that's their entire starting back four and then some, they played a back 3, not only did they win the game, but they won with a clean sheet, and allowed 1shot on goal in like the 86th minute... Victor valdes was sleeping half the game... Any team with pretense to be a top side, must have a plan to deal with injuries, suspensions or whatever... Just not good enough gunners... We, the fans, are suffering and now humiliated after THAT scoreline that I refuse to mention...

Posted by JohnT on 08/30/2011

At least it spurred Arsenal to actually do something in the transfer market. Presently with Park Cho Young, Mertesacker and Santos coming it is looking better. They still need to buy a defensive enforcer as well as a creative midfielder. Ramsey still has a way to go. Rosicky should be sold. At present he has manager to only spend a little less than £20 million. It's time to step up and bring in quality midfielders. If the rumours about M'Vila are true that is one more piece in the puzzle. They will still need one more because even though Wenger raves about Miyachi, he has not even made the bench presently. Which makes me wonder why Wenger worked so hard for him to be included in the squad this year.

Posted by Dennis Nyongesa on 08/30/2011

please.........please Arsene Wenger must KNOW that we fans.we are tired of loosing and not winning any cup despite of being top four but without trophies it will make us run away from supporting Arsenal .please defenders and mildfilders should be increased and quality not low quality players. FROM KENYA. Arsenal supporter since 1995 .

In a twisted way i am happy we had Man U first because the result is the AW buying Per/ Santos etc etc. Can u imagine if we had Wigan or Blackburn (with all due respect to these teams) and won against them? AW would not have utilized the funds before the end of the window. All isnt lost although i am still not convinved of the quality of the players coming in now. They are good but thats not enough we want to challenge for the EPL this season. We need a creative midfielder or two.

Posted by Dapuma on 08/30/2011

My thought on what Arsene is trying to do is hang on until the Fair Play Rules kick in and also the club has the stadium paid for free and clear, then the books are clean and the club is cash rich and can use the financial muscle to buy whomever because the club has financial muscle (no debt) and can act within the Financial Fair Play rules

Good economic strategy and that is why I think Kronke bought them - not the greatest for the fans but in 3 years if you have the new stadium paid off you are in a great position

I am a Man Utd fan and we are spending a lot of our profit on interest, if you have no debts and all that income from the new stadium you will be in a great position, if you have the patience to wait that long

Posted by ElCid on 08/30/2011

Arsene Wenger also has to go! How many years will it be ebfore everyone realizes that this man is taking the club no where!

You cannot field 4 and 5 18 year old players in a squad in this league and expect to win.

Arsenal were about 4 quality seasoned players last year from winning almost everything.

The only position that has been filled in the year finally is in goal with the replacement of that awful keeper Almunia.

I am afraid that if Arsenal do not buy the 4 players they need that they will next lose Van Persie and Walcott. Nasri would probably of stayed if there was hope of winning.

The biggest failure on the part of Wenger apart from getting rid of anyone with any leadership... like Flamini... is that he persists in playing players who when they do not perform are still rewarded with starting!

Not only has this happened repeatedly with Almunia who is the worst keeper I have ever seen at this level but it was occuring with Denilson and Diaby!

Posted by Andrew on 08/30/2011

@ Kumar

MIGHT not qualify for champions league? at this point qualifying would be an almost unrealistic goal. im just hoping for 6th so we can be in some sort of European competition. I think our fanbase is still a little in denial. Liverpool is back both Manchesters are playing at a level the rivals Barcelona and may even leave them in the dust, and Chelsea still has enough money to spend
$100 mil just bc they might as well. The only silver lining is the spurs is playing just as bad as we are but even 6th is a stretch, look at the table- i know its early but we're like... what? 16th... 17th?

Posted by muchomaas1041 on 08/30/2011

stop bashing rosicky so much. He made some very effective passes last sunday. He's not a leader though, and needs to be surrounded by class. I'll take him over diaby any day. These alleged potential signings can help keep us in the "almost" category, but we need a couple of world class additions- mata (gone to rival), schneider- (never even considered), Forlan. one can only dream.

Posted by campbell on 08/30/2011

It is just hard to say but Wenger need to spend. We need quality not quantity. That entire team on Sunday need to be in the non division league

Posted by JJL on 08/30/2011

Arsene is not to blame. Not that he's been spot on in everything, but he's doing the best he can. The problem is not the transfer kitty either. As Arsene and the club have said many times, large transfer fees aren't preventing them from signing players.

The problem is the wage structure. Paying 35 million quid for Wesley Sneijder might seem an easy thing to do when we have the money from the sales of Cesc and Nasri, but when the bloke wants 200k+ per week, Arsene cannot fit that within the wage structure. Same for Mata. And same for Nasri -- his head was turned by the absurd sums on offer at City. When most elite players are ruled out because they can (and would) get higher wages at other clubs, Arsene is right that it is difficult to find players of the right quality. The wage structure must change. Not go, but change.

(Jagielka and Cahill are a different story; loyalty to Everton, and Bolton holding out for a ransom, explain those.)

Posted by Todd on 08/30/2011

My only problem with this whole scenario is that no one inside of Arsenal has commented on the goings on, not even an unamed source. None of the coaching staff have the guts to tell AW that this team isn't good enough, let's go get some quality? Panic buys today and tomorrow? Probably, but at least he's doing something.

Posted by kardajo on 08/30/2011

as a completely and totally biased Man Utd fan I feel compelled to comment. But I'll try not to rub it in too much. The interesting thing is that Utd played a younger team and adopted a style that was kinda similar to Arsenal's only in this case much better. My best friend's an Arsenal fan so obviously we have heated moments, but one thing I keep trying to convince him of is his team lacks legends. I think Utd are as good as they are because they keep their legends and let them teach the kids. For example Scholes and Nevile retired from the club, Giggs will and they have more experience in their little fingers than any Arsenal player. Also we bring in vastly talented players like Berbatov Owen and VDS not just to play but also and possibly more importantly to teach our kids. Arsenal's legends are players like Henry and Viera who were both sold and so didn't get to mentor the kids in the same way Utds legends do. I think that's the biggest difference and why Utd's approach is working.

"If the role of a board member is to oversee a trophyless period, while making significant personal profits and asking fans to pay inflation-busting ticket price increases then, no, I would not want to be on the board. If instead it is to try to deliver sustained success, to increase your personal investment in the club, to help develop the commercial position and to ensure the fans have a say in the running of the club then, yes, I think I certainly have something to contribute." - Usmanov.
I love the "Arsenal way" and all, but sometimes the way our board behaves reminds me of a cartel. Usmanov "sounds" like he could definitely cook something for Arsenal if given the chance to, but could we live with what he gave us? Hmmm...

Posted by chuckles on 08/30/2011

I find it interesting that the AFC Board has been silent all thru this summer, it makes me wonder what is actually going on in there, especially after Lady Nina said the entire Board should be sacked. Perhaps it hasn't been AW dithering over transfers, perhaps the Club think that making money is what matters over competition.

Posted by david fitch on 08/30/2011

Well done Sam glad you took some time to think before you wrote your blog to many people just want to point fingers and blame. You are right the whole struture of the club from top to bottom has to look what needs to be done to get Arsenal back on track. Thought should be given to bring in a defenseive coach the backline defended like schoolboys allowing to much space behind and on the freekicks no one stood on the post stuff you coach to kids while this may or may not had worked it would have given Roony and co something to think about. The lesson that should be learn't is the one Man U have from there CL final you need pace and purpose it not just about holding the ball and making endless passes you need to finish Arsenal need a striker who can deliver 20 plus goals a season until they do they cannot expect to get near to the two manchester clubs. Our goalkeeper he may have been at fault for the first goal over all i thought he did not have a bad game i think he was exposed.

Posted by lockdown12 on 08/30/2011

I think you (and another poster above me, JJL) are spot on about the wage structure at Arsenal. We have to start paying more competitive wages. Nasri is but one in a long line of players to leave for greener pastures in recent years. That will continue unless our wages become more competitive with the big spenders. I'm not saying they need to be the same or above them, but they need to be COMPARABLE.

@kardajo.....You are correct. But why do our legends leave and some of yours stay? Wages.

Posted by Goonersince1969 on 08/30/2011

On the comment by kardajo.

This sums up EXACTLY what the main problem is at Arsenal. Not the money, not the lack of big names ( all big names were small once), not suspensions, not injuries.

With no experienced "talisman" players, there is no plan B or C when something goes wrong. Throwing bottles does nothing. The "legend" on the field takes charge and changes things.
Off the field they are teachers for the kids. Perhaps Mr Wenger does not like being one of many mentors. Perhaps he needs to be the only one. I can't think of any other reason that since the invincibles, we have never bought a "talisman".
We had so many in the invincibles and let them all go.

Getting rid of Gilberto was such a mystery because he didn't want to go. Remember how Bergkamp had to retire when he still wanted to continue?

i believe there is sometine behind d scene dat AW is nt showing bt i have to say that we need legends at this time.AW should pls buy players like cahill, kaka and villa to boster this kids.if he can do thìs,PL,CL ar sure for arsenal.pls help your fans wenger.

It is rather unfortunate that we at AFC have refused to face facts:AW and his so-called philosophies are not working. He has a choice to mend his ways or be shown the exit door and pretty fast at that.Just imagine how defeatist it sounds to suggest that AW is a success in these days of Sir Ferggie,Mourinho,Guardiola and even AVB of yesterday. Imagine also where MUFC and AFC were before their respective managers were hired and where they are today. The obvious difference is that while one manager strategises for success, the other is relentlessly planning for failure.Maybe the following could bring the whole issue into focus:supporting a club goes beyond watching their matches and being familiar with their players; fans, more often than not, desire to correlate the success of their clubs to their personal successes. You can then imagine the untold trauma the likes of AW are doing to the psyche and morale of most Arsenal supporters. I daresay that the foregoing is simply sadistic.

Posted by John Wong on 08/31/2011

I am a fan from HK. It is really a sad weekend for arsenal fans... but we need to face the fact that our team is not good enough...
The biggest problem is our defensive line...honestly we have only Vermaelen who is capable of holding the defensive line well...but we and Arsene already knew that he injured so easily...why shouldn't we buy another world class CB straight away? I still remember that Arsene says their defensive player is well enough... this frustrated me..
another problem is the midfield. After Nasri and Fabegras left we did not have enough creativity..in the previous match, our midfield game is too awful...I dont blame the new kid but Ramsey is too under expected. he doesnt know where to go where to pass...I remember there is one play that he pass to Rosicky and Rosicky pass back to tell him to pass to another side..but he keeps passing to Rosicky!! This is not the arsenal play style...Where is our 1-2 pass where is our one touch pass...
whatever happens.Gunners forever

People calling for Arsene Wenger to resign are either 15 years old, stupid, or both.

Arsene Wenger is, without question, the single most important figure in Arsenal's rise from mid-table obscurity on par with Aston Villa to continental elite and regular Champions League participant. He has been the architect of some of the most technically sophisticated teams in Premier League history and has managed these accomplishments without reliance on the morally repugnant financial assistance of shady Arab or Russian oil barons.

However, you are right to question whether the board and possibly the manager have become complacent. The stakes in the league and in Europe are now higher than anyone could possibly have predicted and unless Arsenal finds new leaders in the transfer market right now, they will fall back into that mid-table obscurity.

the trio from chelsea is highly welcomed. at last wenger`s proffesionalism is felt. give the them a better offer let the trio in. park young and mertesacker are highly welcomed to the club. us(fans) are happy and have fully accepted them and we are willing to give them the neccessary suppot.

I've been an Arsenal fan since 1997 and do miss the days of big men on the park like Henry, Petit, Bergkamp, Gilberto, enforcers like Viera, Tanks like Seaman, Adams, Keown, Campbell, Lauren mercurial speedy wingers like Overmars, Van Bronkhorst, Lunberg,Parlour, Wiltord,Pires...compare some of this names and their physical sizes and commitment on the day to the present crop and you'll see Arsenal's problems.
i would not put so much on AW's doorsteps cos even the players have got to justify their appearance on the pitch. I utterly detest Diaby and Denilson, have heart attacks with Almunia and Jourou, irritated by Bendtner and Arshavin and can shoot Traore (Thank God QPR took our liability) in the head. Koscielny and Chamakh could sell in the Nigerian league for a dime a dozen OMG!!!!!!!!!!!
Welcome Mertesacker (at least an aerial advantage with Vermaelen) welcome Park, some sense with speed, welcome Santos at least some depth at the left... I anticipate Malouda with all my heart!

Posted by Nicholas Kabare on 08/31/2011

I am an Arsenal fan and have followed them with admiration. Last year Arsenal was beaten by a ManU team that looked weaker on paper than the the team Arsenal put on the field in the FA cup. That time I was sure that Arsene Wenger could have seen that even with a full first 11 he needed to act by bringing in some players. That would have kept Nasri and Fabregas interested in Arsenal and the rebuilding could not have as painful as it is going to be. One thing that is certain is that however much we rebuild now we are going to struggle to attain a top 4 finish as we have to climb from position 17 where we stand now and have also got to fix a goal difference that puts us into a disadvantage at a very eaerly stage of the league. On the CL front I would not be suprised if we were knocked out in the group stages. Though this may look bad it might help in the rebuilding process as the number of fixtures will be reduced. The real measure of the rebuilding will be the return ManU fixture.

Posted by Terry F. on 08/31/2011

Excellent analysis. However, four major points must be highlighted.
1- Wenger stubbornly refused to believe that Fabregas and Nasri were leaving
2- By not strengthening the squad with this knowledge early this summer, he is now faced with a transfer market that offers much less in immediate quaality and will cost him much more. I know if my phone rang with Mr. Wenger on the other end, I'd smile and my price would go up.
3- The philosophy of bringing in young starlets and developing them has been time proven, but unfortunately, is now antiquated. Whether it makes financial sense at all, I don't know, but Man City is recklessly buying everyone they feel Mancini might need and without regard for cost or weekly earnings. They regularly have a bench worth more than 14 Premier League teams entire payroll! Does Arsenal even have the ambition to compete with the Mans, Chelsea and Liverpool?
4- Would Cahill and Parker not look good in the lineup? When will Wenger buy an English player?

Posted by Matn Kasa on 08/31/2011

Wenger takes all the blame. Any visionary manager would have given Nasri a new contract three years back, would not only talk about the likes of Matta, but rather take action.

I do believe he has done quiet alot for the club, but he should not act like African presidents who at one time liberated their countries, but at the end acting strangely, hence destroying everything.

We do not judge a good manager by the way he dresses, but rather the silverware!!

Posted by Hong Mun on 08/31/2011

Injuries and the such are no excuse. Old Arsenal would cope and get on with business because they had depth unrivalled in the league. I remember in the decade past Arsene could stick any of his bench players in there and they would do the job. That was a subs bench I was very happy about, a coach's dream. Think Kanu, Edu, Parlour, Wiltord, Flamini, Reyes...Match Winners! even the lesser accomplished players like Oleg Luzhny and Gilles Grimandi were tough and did not take nonsense and caused the club far less problems defensively than people like Clichy (don't defend him). We have gone downhill from there. I think with Arsene's skill level as a coach we don't have to buy as many quality players to compete, however we defintiely need the confidence and assuredness that experienced winners bring to the dressing room. Fewer quality signings is not the same as no quality signings.

Posted by Todd on 08/31/2011

I agree with Terry on 3 of his points, and with some of the earlier posts. How does a team that is listed on the Forbes list as the 5th richest team in the world have a weekly pay wage 1/3 of MC? Something stinks inside AFC, and the fans deserve to know. Is there a fanclub blog that we could actually find out what is talked about at the annual shareholders meeting?

Posted by arsenalfandejected on 09/01/2011

Sad sad season coming. I am an arsenal fan forever, but this is bad. Everyone except Wenger could see Cesc had to go last year to buy and surround Nasri with class, instead we get 2nd class. Arsenal have the brand and means to spend and be a top 4 team. They will be set back years by this mismanagement of things, they days of playing like Barca are over. I am so disappointed I cannot watch.

"Over the course of yesterday evening the deal for Arteta collapsed at 7pm with Arsenal agreeing a fee of around £10m for the 29-year-old only to see the transfer slip away from them over the player's personal terms. However, the move was resurrected at 9.30pm with Arteta the driving force in getting it back on track, taking a £20,000 reduction in his £75,000-per-week wages at Everton."

This is the type of player that Arsenal needs! Great stuff..

The scope of football (in Europe)has changed a lot over one decade, possibly starting from Roman Avramovich's buying of Chelsea. All top quality players are grouped in big, money-spending clubs. This change made our manager and team difficult to win in matches. In fact, many teams like Ajax, Redstar belgrade, and PSV, teams with past glory and success, suffer the same fate. Alex Ferguson and some managers accept/adopt the current trend and get reasonable success. Recent loss of 8-2 to Man U is not unacceptable (it was in fact Arsenal B team); we had similar loss to Man U by (5-1) in spite of presence of French trio, and (5-0) to Chelsea in a cup match. In close of season, we will get 4th place, and European entry. The problem is that could we satisfy with our situation. To bring top players enough to get Champion league title will not be easy; it will cost 1 billion for Messi alone, for example. For fans of Arsenal, there is no choice but to support current Arsenal whatever it may be.

look at where we stand on the epl table, -8goals 17th on the table, as an dedicated fan i have never been so afraid for our clubs future now. I dun know how we can get back into a competitive position from here. City, liverpool, man united, chelsea are looking like there n ot going to drop points ne time soon. Even wolves r out performing us. This will be the most challenging and demanding season and arsen wenger is totally unaware of the the situation. The delusional, and foolish wenger looks like he will be reponsible for the club not even finishing in the top7 let alone the top 4. Clubs are supposed to be better equiped and become better each season but we r the only club who looks like we slip further away from achieving nething. Why must we continue to watch things crumble and suffer the heartbreak as supporters when the solution boils down to finances, its just that simple. We have plenty of money but in a game of monopoly have money and no property is pointless.

Posted by blave on 09/01/2011

If nothing else at least the pasting over the weekend spurred some solid purchases in the transfer market. PM and Santos will definitely shore up the back line and Arteta seems like a great signing, especially late in the window and overall I am satisfied with the transfer business the team has ultimately concluded.

Aside from still being thin up front I like the looks of this squad when everyone is back from injury and suspensions. Lets go Gunners!

Posted by cliff on 09/01/2011

With the available players Arsene had the logical approach would be "parking the bus" and playing for a draw. Arsene gambled and it backfired badly. However, imagine the reactions of the press and fans had they BEAT ManU with the team that was put out. Wenger must have thought that was worth a shot.

Hi, I'm a United fan. As sweet as it gets for United fans to see Gunners being "gun down", seriously, something wrong with Arsenal's management. I won't lie, I jumped up and down watching 8 goals from United BUT for the love of the game, seeing the fans and Arsenal players off and on the field, their reactions, well, just left to be unsaid.

So, for all football fans out there, do you need to crack your head to find solutions for problems arises? argue with each other? heck no! You are not paid to do that, in fact, you are the one as fans had to spend $$$. So, blame on the Manager as he is being paid to solve these issues, blame on the Management for not bring more funding regardless what's their biz strategy is, who cares! As fans, we want thropies and glories to boast among fans from other teams.

People say, blaming is not good, well, it's certainly can express and relieve your frustration and most importantly, see it as your privilege as fans who spend $$$ by supporting your team.
