It was a pulsating night's entertainment at Ashburton Grove on Tuesday night. Nothing gets the blood pumping like overturning an injustice and coming from behind to win.
Everton’s record against teams near the top of the table this season meant they were always going to be a tough nut to crack. The task was made harder by the referee and his assistant who ludicrously allowed Louis Saha’s 24th minute effort to stand. It was offside. Forget all the nonsense about “active” and “inactive”. It was offside.

The uproar in the stadium was loud enough but then, perhaps “accidentally on purpose”, the producer manning the video screens replayed the goal as the players walked back to the centre circle. We got the confirmation that our eyes hadn’t deceived us and the uproar turned into pandemonium. But to no avail. It was a dreadful decision for which the officials ought to be embarrassed.
The referee actually had an appalling game overall. I try not to slate them too much on these pages because what goes around tends to come around and bad decisions even themselves out. However, Lee Mason’s was undoubtedly the worst refereeing performance we have seen at home this season. He lacked consistency, failed to play advantage on a number of occasions and set the wrong tone for the game with the bookings he handed out. Hopefully, we won’t be seeing him again for a while.
That decision aside, Everton were largely the better team in the first half - particularly in the first quarter of an hour - and they restricted the Gunners to only a few chances. Things turned around after the interval though and, despite what David Moyes would have you believe, the thing that really swung things in Arsenal’s favour was the introduction of Andrey Arshavin.
The diminutive Russian has come in for a lot of stick this season - and deservedly so. But over the last few matches there have been signs that his form is starting to turn a corner. Last night offered the clearest indication that he is heading back in the right direction and his goal in the 70th minute was a handsome reward for the increase in Arsenal’s tempo and effectiveness that his arrival brought.
Many expected Arshavin to clear his personal log-jam with one spectacular performance or a stunning goal but it seems his rehabilitation is going to be a more gradual process. It has been a long while coming but his timing couldn’t be any better with Samir Nasri likely to be laid up with his hamstring injury for the next three weeks.
Laurent Koscielny is becoming a bit of a danger man from corners scoring his second goal from such a set play in as many weeks. The Everton defence left him completely unmarked and he unerringly dispatched his header into the bottom corner. Making capital from corners has hardly been the Gunners’ strongest suit in recent seasons but it is good to see them scoring from them again.
So, Everton set Arsenal a stern test but Arsene Wenger’s men earned a good result from a very spirited performance. They stay in second place in the Premier League and, after scraping past Huddersfield in the FA Cup on Sunday, remain fighting on four fronts this season.
The other so-called talking point to emerge from last night was the accusations made by David Moyes that Cesc Fabregas verbally abused the referee in the tunnel at half-time. Why the media have seized upon this, I do not know. Arsene Wenger defended the player and the referee himself made no comment in his match report regarding anything Fabregas may or may not have said. It is a total non-story and was really just a smokescreen by the Everton manager to deflect attention away from the defeat.
Cesc Fabregas does make himself heard by officials during matches. Some don’t like to see this but plenty of other players do it, not least amongst the ranks of Manchester United and Chelsea. Maybe that in itself is not a justifiable excuse for Fabregas to indulge in such behaviour but, over the past few seasons, Arsenal have been perceived to be too soft and a bit of a pushover. If Cesc has decided to take it upon himself to make the Arsenal point of view understood by referees, then fine by me.
There is a lot at stake in every game coming up now and I want to see players getting upset in matches. I want to see passion and I want to see them give every last drop of blood. I want them to hate losing. As we approach the business-end of the season, it’s got to be a case of no more Mr. Nice Guy.
So, keep moaning Cesc.

While I don't particularly like seeing players constantly complain to officials, I don't see why the media are making such a big deal of it. Where's the media indignation over Rooney's constant foul mouthed tirades at refs? Darren Fletcher grabs a ref without getting even a card--where's the media outrage? Terry, Cole, Lampard et al can completely encircle a ref while complaining vociferously--any negative coverage of that? Oh wait, I forgot. This is Arsenal and Cesc isn't English, cue the moral indignation.

I was impressed by the change in 2nd half with Brenter up front, leaving more room of freedom for v Persie to attack plus the effective Arshavin set the 3 pronged strong attack line ( Brenter's overhead kick and v Persie free kick are a joy to watch), with Fabregas the main generator behind them so these arrangement won't let us down during the Nasri's absence
Worth to try this pattern again against Newcastle, at least in the 2nd half

My thoughts exactly. Good to see Arshavin contributing meaningfully to the team, and with Kos posing a danger during corners, we have more options.
As for whatever Cesc said, I know I would have said much worse if I had the opportunity. Even a blind man could have seen that that goal was offside!

It is so nice to see that we have added "grit" to our attributes. The players should keep up the spirit and have "belief" as well. I see siverware in sight.

Well done Arsenal ! This is exactly the kind of test Arsenal needed to test their maturity and toughness. I think the boys are now becoming men, fantastic display. Despite all this, I still want to throw in one comment for Bendtner as a striker, he really needs to improve his techniques when he receives the ball in the penalty area. He should try to either take a first time shot or pass it to someone at a better position to strike at goal instead of trying to control it. In the penalty box, you will not have time to control. One touch football is more appropriate !

People r constantly criticizing Arsenal for not winning any trophies for the last 6 yrs but then you've got to remember that what r the priorities of the club U cannot just win trophies at the extent of making debts in the market.Arsenal has the best stability among the top clubs compared to any top clubs in Europe coz for me Arsene wenger is the best person in that job No doubt u can win trophies by spending those millions of pounds and soon u will b on the portsmouth road to hell. No body can play the exciting and delightful football that Arsenal plays with the least budget players they have, we believe in only one policy that we like to make plyers and not to buy them coz only then the rewards tastes sweet.

Can anyone explain why Chamakh isn't playing in the first XI consistently again. Not even as a substitute.
Average performance (the better 2nd half was diluted by a poor 1st half) and great result...I'll take that everyday till d season ends!

The fans need to b patient with Arshavin coz he is an excellent player and we will get to see the best of him in the coming days.I still believe that Arsenal should have signed a defender coz thats the place where the problem lies and they should really fight till the end this season coz we can really smell the siverwares coming to the emirates this season.

We are getting tired of this miss perfect[David Moyes]. Whatever his name suggests is non of our business, he looks more Herodic than the Herode we know. Let him learn to face both sides of the coin, Cesc was absolutely right to attack the referee. Maybe Moye was in the stadium but not watching the game. He is colour-blind, pliz ask Wenger to purchase specks for this lunatic man.

why should it be when arsenal come out to voice out issues dat people see it as wrong. i think david moyes should go and prepare himself for evertons next match instead of bothering himself over what fabregas said to the refree, afterall the refree made a blunder
 |
Posted by mnyot on 02/03/2011
personally i think it is the captain's job to talk to the ref about questionable calls like the "non-offside" goal by saha and i also think moyes needs to learn how to lose to a better team

Yes I think this is the time when Arsenal need to be strong and win every game they play.

Arshavin showed quickness and pace which has been lacking in his game for several months. Most importantly, he showed desire to play which has been missing for 2 seasons now. I am seeing players actually playing for each other and the squad, not for themselves. This team believes now and it will take a train wreck to get them off track. As for Cesc and his complaining... Have you ever seen Rooney, Terry, Fletcher confront a ref after a bad call? Non issue there right? The hypocrisy of the media knows no boundaries and should be exposed at every chance. On to glory for the Gunners!!

Good to see Arshavin starting to return and climb the mountain of sharpness and form. Keep it up. LETS GO ARSENAL!!!

over d years i c how Arsenal grow in to formidable & stronger team. Well done Wenger. Imagin spending so little to such a wanderful gem of talented player. It really suprise me to note that the stating 11 against Everton actually cost Arsenal less than £40million, it cost chelsea £50million on Torres, just a day after reporting a £71million lost.is that what d world of football term management? how many tropies would a team won just to be above water & 4 how long. Abrahimovich refuse spending last summer & d team lost its momentum, d question is 4 how long would he keep spending just 2 keep winning without any profit?
I like d way Arsenal is been manage, although i was a bit critical sometimes. last season Arsene Wenger refuses 2 sign a defender, ending up leaving arsenal defence in d hands of Silvester, while playing against d likes of Baca. D likes of Bendtner, Daiby r gud players bt they r so slow & r alway d obstacle in Arsenal passing game so they do nt fit Arsenal team.

I have one question to ask the FA. if players complain they fine them or if they make a terrible tackle after the game... if a coach complains or acts wrongly during a game which he was never red carded off they fine him or ban in for a while... Please i need to know what happens to all this referees who make terrible calls and just cause problems for other teams, can somebody help me out please, because FA is really killing this game, each week referees keep killing the game, i am not surprised why one of government officials said football is not well managed in england.

Amazing what Arsenal is doing without going nuts in the transfer window. Kudos to Wenger, if he can keep his squad together and pick up a decent replacement for Cesc next year (we all know he's headed elsewhere) which is going to be incredibly hard, Arsenal should be shooting for the league title in 2012-13. That's what I love about Wenger, planning ahead. Arshavin just another point and case, sticking with a guy knowing he'll come through for you.
Complaining by Cesc, gimme a break. Refs are a piece of cake to read, and some of them need a little smack to make them see the game more "clearly".

Posted by GoonerGunner on 02/04/2011
I found it interesting that Arshavin really helped dictate the pace of the game when playing in an almost center forward position, it seems to be his favored position. I was wondering if there is a formation where he could possibly fit in that position more often? Considering the large strike force we already have.

the fact that fabregas talked to the ref in whatever manner should not be the main point of the debate. who makes a huge offside mistake like that one and dont expect to be talked to. do the press see man u and chelsea players when they react to decisions against them by referees? they always intimidate the refs and dont even get booked. if fab asked how much he was paid, then fab is very correct bcos the fa wanted us to lose the match so that man u has a leeway in the league.
always will be a gunner

Arshavin is among of the best Arsenal player for the present time....though he has been criticized in few days this season but still is the leading Arsenal player for producing best last ball which led to goals this season [he has many ASSIST BALLS than other players] so keep on coming Russian and show us what you have
Posted by birenge on 02/05/2011
Did anybody see the work of the referee that just worked wonders at Newcastle?
Posted by dittus on 02/09/2011
i still believe the Russian is still the biggest talent at arsenal. thank God he is resurrecting from the dead again.

About
Sam Limbert: My retirement as a football player came at the age of 14 due to being rubbish, it's fair to say I was more Kaba Diawara than Thierry Henry, so I turned my focus to writing about the game. I'm a lifelong Arsenal fan and have been lucky enough to watch the team across England and Europe. My favourite Gunner of all time is Dennis Bergkamp, and the 2004 Invincibles is the greatest side I've ever seen in English football. I try to be positive about the Arsenal as it's the hope that keeps us going! Follow me on twitter @SamsMatchReport.
