Two moments of sparkling brilliance from Samir Nasri were just about enough to see off a determined Fulham team at Ashburton Grove and send Arsenal top of the table.

It was hardly a classic performance. In fact, it was another stuttering home display which saw the Gunners look completely on top one moment and nervously under the cosh the next. They started both halves brightly and purposefully but Fulham had their moments. And, in fact, for the larger part of the second half the visitors looked the most likely team to grab a second goal and the more probable winners - that is, until Nasri’s second intervention.

Samir Nasri Brilliantly Turns in His Second Goal©Getty Images

There is not much more to say about Samir Nasri’s form this term that hasn’t already been said. He is head-and-shoulders the player of the season so far. In every match he looks a live threat and the eleven goals he has notched up have made the difference between a player that has "potential" and a player that is actually delivering. His two goals yesterday were moments of wonderful individual skill and composure. He is a man completely on top of his game right now.

The capsule summary of the Gunners’ individual displays yesterday would be: Nasri and Wilshere - excellent. Song and Rosicky - awful. Everyone else - fair to middling. Yet again young Jack Wilshere anchored the midfield beautifully. The accuracy and economy of his passing is something to behold and the only criticism that could be levelled at him is that he is not bolder in committing himself forward - which is something I mentioned last week - though I suppose Wenger has him under instructions to a degree.

Both Tomas Rosicky and Alex Song looked well off the pace. Song, in particular, was a worry as he is supposed to play such an important role in midfield. However, yesterday, he looked lackadaisical. His decision-making was poor and he failed to impose himself on the match at all.

For a man who is looking to break-through in a similar way to Samir Nasri, Tomas Rosicky really is not getting anywhere near close to cutting it at the moment. He has had one or two reasonable games this season but yesterday’s was definitely one to forget. On his current form, it would be hard to justify keeping him in the starting eleven.

So, Arsenal sit on top of the table at the end of the weekend. It is a very satisfying place to be but I don’t think anyone will be getting carried away with things just yet. Yesterday’s win was hardly the most convincing and there are some very hard games coming up over the next couple of months in the Premier League - the first of which is, significantly, the trip to Old Trafford on Monday week. Yesterday’s result and the Gunners hitting the top of the table whilst United had to sit out their game with Blackpool due to a frozen pitch sets what is always a massive match up very nicely indeed.

Away from the Premier League, Arsenal won through to the semi-final of the Carling Cup on Tuesday night by huffing and puffing their way past Wigan Athletic. The Gunners were a long way from their fluent best but, in return, Wigan offered virtually nothing. A two-leg semi-final with Ipswich Town, who are currently languishing in the bottom third of the Championship, awaits and it seems unthinkable that Arsene Wenger’s men won’t prevail over two matches. Failure to reach the Final would be a catastrophe.

Still, we don’t have to concern ourselves with that particular encounter until the New Year. Far more pressing is this week’s Champions League clash with Partizan Belgrade. Describing it as a “must-win game” is, for once, a statement of fact rather than just hyperbole. Though Arsenal can still progress if they fail to beat Partizan as long as Braga don’t better the result in their game against Shakhtar, it really would be far cleaner for the Gunners to just win the game and get themselves through.

Partizan sit at the bottom of the table on zero points but that is no cause for complacency. I am sure they will be out to spoil Arsenal’s night as a parting shot to this year’s tournament. The Gunners must make sure they approach the game professionally and do the job that needs to be done.

I have always thought tomas rosicky is not good enough for arsenal: lack of pace in his shots and run plus lack of accuracy in his attempts on goals. Hope he wont play against Partizan. I think Eboue is a better choice.

Its really a good feeling to be top of the table, but never can one be so unhappy to be in a position as Arsenal are. The ruth remains we should be miles ahead of the pack right now because we have so much going for us. Few injuries to key players, a large squad compared to our rivals and an awsome attack led by the player of the season so far. However all that is undone by the team's lack of defensive cohesion. Sometimes seeing Arsenal defend makes you wonder why we are even in the premier league. Its suicidal and only when we address our frailties at the back will we ever win the league. It still feels good to be top of the league.

It seems nowadays whenever Arsenal win, they are always a "long way from their fluent best". When they lose, the general comments are that it was expected. It doesn't matter what they do, good or bad, the post match critics will always find a way to soil the team. In fact, the only time they recieve praise for any good performance is in the champions league, and that is only because the whole of England gets behind their teams representing them in Europe. It seems to me this club is passionately disliked. Why? Unknown!!!! Someone enlighten me, please.

Arsenal regained some confidence - at the front only, producing some brilliant attack ( Arshavin second half attack was similar to Nasari first goal; and Chamakh's header nearly pushed it to 4 goals...) and 2 golden goals. Wenger has to find option to knit the defence well. Recent goal lost were mainly caught by opponents quick counter attack ( against Spurs, Braga, Villa and Fulham). Does 2 defensive mildfielders help ( with one futher back) or recruit one more forceful central defender ( now only 2 central defenders avail)?

Glad to watch van Persie back in more better shape ( his assist in 2nd goal is inch perfert).
Let give him more match fitness in Wed Euro Championship game, after a cushion goal,an prepare the match of season against Man U. So field a strong side and score as early as practical. Arenal has to target 3 Wembly visits this season: Carling Cup, FA Cup and Euro Championship ( and Premier League is good 'practice' ground to fulfill that)

Other good win but no supporter of Arsenal will have any confidence that they can stay on top with such a fragile defense you would expect teams like united would have no trouble scoring.Arsenal again are guilty of over doing the passes when in front of goal when these goals come off it is spectacular but how many chances do they miss before they score they need to have a bit more of a cutting edge hopefully they will have in the champions league game.

Yes, well written. Also, an honourable mention to Arshavin who seems to be regaining the form that we saw in his first half-season with Arsenal. With Fabregas out, and Van Persie just coming in, Arshavin is vital to us. Its good to see him sulking less and getting more and more into the game.

Another mention for Fabianski. The Pole has saved us a couple of games with some very good stops. He still needs to convince us with his decision-making, but he is now at least doing a part of his job right - he at least has the media off his back for some time.

Posted by ifeanyi udemezue on 12/06/2010

Good piece Dave. Do you not think that we need a central defender?

DY replies:

We now have four central defenders - so numbers aren't really a problem. What concerns me is the lack of height in that area. None of the four - Vermaelen, Squillaci, Djourou or Koscielny - are exactly giants and we still look very susceptible to any aerial threat posed by opponents.

Wenger has said he is not signing anyone in the January window and I think he is stating a fact by saying this rather than just trying to take the heat off himself. Consequently, it looks like we are going to have to stick with the defenders we have got until the end of the season.

iam happy by arsenal result.

Posted by Seryx on 12/06/2010

David, I totally agree that our form this season has been quite unconvincing this season, if anything but we're at the top of the table right now & that says something about the other teams. No one has really been able to take the league by the scruff of the neck & we should be thankful for that.
What I feel is the team to first find its form will be the one to take the league & it could be anyone right now.
As for Old Trafford, I am not really scared of that match. Arsenal's away form this season has been exceptional & i think we can pull something from that match, especially with the Red Devils yet to really convince anyone too. That match serves well but I won't be expecting fireworks & i sincerely don't expect them to beat us there.
I hope the boys will be able to pick up well before then and a win over Belgrade will do us a lot of good.
Carlig Cup is a must this season & I support Wenger fielding a strong team till the end. The cup drought must end this season!!!

hi david,

do you think vermaelen would make a comeback any soon (not according to the official website, he doesn't)? if not, don't you think we should buy in jan for his place or at least a dm who can play cb?

Posted by damazane on 12/06/2010

Nasri's goal against Porto is nominated for the FIFA goal of the year. Nasri won the PFA award for player of the month(October).Nasri is nominated for the PFA award for the player of the month(November). Have I left anything? He is irrefutably the best player in the EPL at the moment.Go..go..gunners!!

Posted by Ethan on 12/06/2010

As mentioned by some, I am glad to see Arshavin taking the initiative to lead the attack when it is much needed. Chamakh didn't seem to connect quite well but it just takes some more time.

Fulham is pretty organized and could have killed us off at times. Our central defence made a fool of themselves again by hurting themselves and giving a goal away. Luckily, Nasri is still in top form. Good to see him play in the central position as well.

Van Persie is getting his touches back. Hopefully, he will find goals soon. Same for Walcott. His pace still does him good. Just more tricky runs will get him into the right positions.

Wilshere has shown Song how to be consistent and decisive. I am still expecting great stuff from the two. Likewise, Sagna is a much better defender than Clichy. Used to see Clichy making 1 shot a game but nowadays he seemed shy to shoot and prefer to pass. This could be where Gibbs can play a part.

->Sam
If you say that Rosicky has never been good enough before all his injuries. Guy was off the charts with long distance rockets and excellent play. I agree he has fallen off the pace, but He is still a decent player. Hopefully Diaby will return soon enough

Keep it coming Dave. Hard fought victory. Shoot the ball! Shoot the ball! Nuff said.

My purchase of a Nasri Arsenal Home Jersey has officially been validated. I was torn b/w getting either him, Arshavin, RVP, Vermaelen or Walcott. Glad I made the right choice! Both goals were brilliant. I think I enjoyed hearing media talk about those goals more than win itself.

Set pieces and aerial balls = #1 area of concern. Gunners have to be the worst, on both ends when it comes to this. We virtually never score from set pieces or corners in the air, and our defense of set pieces/corners/aerial balls is ridiculous. Must get better at clearing the ball out, they always want to pass it around the area when they should clear. Maybe Wenger should hire a defensive specialist to train these guys.

All in all though great win, sets up huge game v. Man Ure next week. I am torn with Fabregas trying to come back for this game. It may be better to keep him on bench and see how current squad performs

Agree completely Rosicky and Song were terrible on Saturday. Ever since Song bleached his hair he has been dreadful. I was watching him carefully on Saturday and he was going forward when he should of been defending and vice a versa. Totally clueless, he was so solid last season, not sure how Arsene is going to fix him. Rosicky has also lost form. It is very weired watching Arsenal misplace passes and lose so much possession in midfield, that is normally our forte. We got get back to our strengths. Djorjou was solid when he came on, he does look more comfortable in defense than Koscelny. Hoping for a good performance on Wednesday. It sure would be a downer if we don't get to the knockout stages.

Posted by Goddie on 12/07/2010

Squillaci is truly not a very good defender. He came from a distance and bumped into kolsieny. i wonder how he didnt see him. His positioning is also not the best. I wonder what has caused Songs dip in form. A few months ago, he was Arsenal's best player in almost every match, but I was surprised to watch him give away the ball to opponents several times in the middle of the pack.

Posted by Rithvik on 12/07/2010

It seems like Wenger's increased the amount of pressing that Arsenal does, particularly in the forward line. I think this is in response to the absolute roasting that the Gunner's got during the first 20 minutes of that Champs League match last year. The problem is that intense pressing necessitates playing a high line, which leaves Arsenal even more susceptible to balls over the top and quick counters. In particular, Song seems to be playing a more mobile role instead of simply being the destroyer in the middle. I'm not sure if this is part of Wenger's greater plan or if it's just due to Song being positionally undisciplined, but it is a worrying trend with the upcoming matches.
Thanks for another good piece David! Keep up the good work!

Posted by SeanC on 12/07/2010

Nice to see someone call out Song for his somewhat below average performances this season. Wenger said in his post match press conference that he wants Song up in the opponents half. I could understand this logic if Song was winning more second balls or stopping breaks but it just seems to me at least that he is just losing possession, through passing and dispossession, and that leaves a gapping hole in our midfield.

Posted by Uncle Bear on 12/07/2010

Djourou won almost every header after coming in for Kos, think AW should give him more chances.

Comments about Rosicky was a bit too harsh, at least he worked very hard and tracked back a lot. Still think he is the best stand-in for our captain, but for sure he needs to get back the goal scoring touch.

We need the magic of RVP to be the winner at the end of the season. Come on GUNNERS, get us a big win at OT.

Arsenal on a roll.......not convincing enough.....but still top of the table! DEC ll be the deciding factor......if we can get a result against Man U, clealsea n spurs, we are the CHAMPIONS!.......GO ARSENAL GO!

I think Arsenal must scup the carling 4 me

Posted by wengerite on 12/07/2010

@David Young .... Johan is 6'4". how big do you want the CBs to be?

Posted by Maran on 12/08/2010

A match for Nasri to remember as he single handedly earned the win. And match to forget for Song. He had been underperforming for past few matches and I am of the view that he has been responsible for Arsenal's tendency for capitulation when teams attack. His inadeqaute positioning creates gaping holes in midfield and does little to protect the defenders. The longer he stays like this, the worst things can go for this team. Rosicky has been woeful but good for him, the performance of Nasri, Arshavin and Wilshere makes his blunders less conspicuous. Arshavin had tried hard, but luck eludes him. The back four are fast becoming the weak link of the team. Once the opposing teams take note of this, and they start attacking, Arsenal lose their nerves in a jiffy. The team often loses its rythm and confidence with the fear of calamity that awaits at the back. It is a team of two extreme sides. That accounts often for Arsenal's recent games with two sides. One moment the best, next the worst!

Posted by Henry indayi on 12/08/2010

Arsenal have a greater chance of winning the carling cup and it all begins with motivation and the thirst of players for the trophy.Wenger must field a strong squad to be assured of the cup.I can say that they deserve the position one in the EPL and should'nt brag about it because it might be a temporary place for them.Their game display is convincible despite injuries on vital players like Fabregas,Vermalen,Diaby and Bentner.I personally believe Arsenal will win the Carling cup and EPL,and if they more composed, the Champion's League! Go Arsenal Go!!!!!!!

Posted by Dev on 12/08/2010

Arsenal seriously needs to shoot more, Man U are gonna shoot with park rooney and berbatov, Defending well will be the key, hopefully song or diaby can be used in the center to win balls and prevent attacks, i am sure we are well aware that whenever arshavin plays with nasri, we get good goals and this is needed, fabregas if is well can pull the strings, bring on versie first half and bednter in the second, not saying he is better but the ariel threat will be needed, wilshere might be pushed around in this game with his size but his touch and no die attitude will help,
Arsenal are getting better, although we pass well in the box and out, we need to shoot, This win at Ot will help arsenal in a long way, we seriously need this badly. Arsenal for Life

Posted by Bright on 12/08/2010

EXCELLENT FOOTBALL FROM MY LOVELY GUNNERS, PLS I WANT TO USE THIS MEDIUM TO BEG WENGER TO AT LEAST ADD ONE CENTRAL DEFFENDER TO OUR BACK LINE. I WILL BE VERY HAPPY TO SEE THAT COME JENUARY.

Posted by Seun on 12/08/2010

A player will surely have its own off day, thhis match is surely Song's off day. i know he will pick up

Posted by Isaac badu on 12/08/2010

Arsenals needs more goals. being on top doesn't guarantee our win of the league we need to be consistent.

I think arsenal is on their winning ways now. I pray as an arsenal fan 4rm Nigeria, d toping should not be temporally it should be comtemporally. Kudos arsenal! Mean while, on monday night big game they should not panic, they should just go in to d pitch and play their normal game as usual thanks. I pray Game of soccer will see them through that night.

arsenal still has problem when dealing with set pieces....villa and fulham showed it...
great post dave...
i really hope wenger can bring another one quality CB...our defense shaky lately...

good job for arsenal as a team but i dont know why some one should prefer ebuoe to rosicky, plz they should off load ebuoe and buy a keeper if we need to win any silverware this season, now no sagna for the knockout stage and is in feb plz tell prof to get one rightful back or the worst is yet to come

Posted by Francis on 12/10/2010

I have noticed that Song's forays forward this season exposed our defense on quite a number of occasions. Currently, our central defenders are either back from a long layoff or new to the club. I do think they need more time to get an understanding. Clichy hasn't exactly been playing well these days while Arshavin is very inconsistent.

Posted by Emeka Obi Esq on 12/10/2010

I am not so excited by the victory over Fulham. Reason is that defensively Arsenal is still a long way off, to look like a team which can win the EPL.Had it not been for Fabinski Fulham would have led 3-1 by mid-second half and that would have meant another home defeat. Once again let say say AW should do something about our defending especially when we are leading

Posted by Ratha_Cambodia on 12/13/2010

I am with you for the comment on Alex Song. From my own view I the squad has medium performance. For god sake, Wenger should dig into the market for the CB. Both Wilsher and Song cannot hold the counter attack.

Keep move on gunner...!!

Posted by wong on 02/18/2011

IT'S TIME FOR AW TO OFFER NEW "LONGER TERM" CONTRACT TO:

1) SAMIR NASRI

2) JACK WILSHERE

3) WOJCIECH SZCZESNY

4) Johan Djourou

5) ALEX SONG

6) Abou Diaby &

7) Kieran Gibbs

THESE ARE KEY CORE IMPORTANT PLAYERS GUNNER NEED FOR LONG TERM (beside RVP & Cesc Fábregas).

Andrei Arshavin is a BIG GAME PLAYER that is very usefuly in scoring important goal in top of the table clash with very strong opponent.

Both of our wing back serve us well & deserve keeping them as well...
