Arsenal

Arsenal bounced back from their defeats against Spurs and Braga to claim a vital away victory at Villa Park yesterday. It was a match that they largely dominated and yet they still seemed to make hard work of dispatching a very average-looking Aston Villa side.

It seems a little ridiculous that the Gunners had to score four goals to truly put this match to bed when, again, leading 2-0 at the break, the game should have been shut down in the second half with Villa never getting anywhere near any sort of result.

The problem seems to be that this Arsenal’s idea of “shutting a game down” is to slow the tempo of their play and make their passing movements even more elaborate and lacking in any real purpose. This doesn’t work as a tactic as the team loses its momentum and possession is given away as the endless passages of passing dry up.

This was perfectly exemplified when, having conceded an early goal in the second half, Marouane Chamakh quickly restored the two-goal cushion. At this point, everything slowed down and Villa were allowed back into a match that they had no right to take anything from. Though the Ciaran Clark’s first goal should have been ruled out for offside against John Carew, his second saw him given plenty of time by the Arsenal defence to pick his spot.

Last week, I complained that they played too high up the pitch against Spurs in the second half and invited their visitors to hit them on the break. Against Villa, they tried to be more conservative but it seems they don’t really know how to contain opponents and strangle the life out of games. They got away with it at Everton, Wolves and yesterday at Villa but when they come up against better sides – and it begrudges me to say that Spurs are one of those – this factor is going to be a recurring problem.

The remainder of the match saw Villa give the Arsenal fans a few heart-attack moments and it was only when Jack Wilshere’s diving header hit the net in stoppage time that the victory could genuinely be celebrated.

The result and three points aside, Wilshere’s individual display was one of the real highlights of yesterday’s performance. In the absence of Cesc Fabregas, he took the role of anchoring the midfield completely in his stride. His passing was crisp and accurate and he rarely seems to put a foot wrong. He shows a confidence far beyond his years. It really is quite incredible considering his youth and lack of experience.

His goal - the first he has scored in the Premier League - was a perfect and deserved finale to a thoroughly accomplished performance and, hopefully, it will fire him with more confidence to chance his arm going forward a little more in future.

Elsewhere, Marouane Chamakh and Samir Nasri once again turned in good displays. These two are emerging as some of the most reliable performers in the squad this season. It was good to see Andrey Arshavin get on the scoresheet too but he still resides in the category of promising much but delivering not enough.

So, even with its flaws, the win at Villa was a tonic after the recent defeats and will hopefully help get the team back on track. It was a definite boost ahead of Tuesday’s Carling Cup quarter-final against Wigan. Many see this tournament as the Gunners’ most obvious route to silverware this season and a home draw in the quarter-finals is most welcome after having to negotiate trips to Spurs and Newcastle in the earlier rounds.

Much will depend on the strength of the team that Arsene Wenger decides to field. However, the manager has not held back in this competition this year and it seems unlikely that he will change tack now with a semi-final at stake. Though he will probably ring the changes from Saturday’s starting line-up, one can’t imagine him digging too far into the youth squad for this game.

Arshavin was our best player yesterday i see he doesnt recieve the credit he deserves he set up 2 goals and played through Nasri who just about scored from a tight angle but unfortunately he hit the side netting

Oh sir, you hit the nail right on the head. The Americans have a saying that "if it ain't broke don't fix it", if the tactic is working why change it. Geez, its not rocket science. Wenger at times reminds me of the tinker man (Ranieri) at times.

Always thought there is a missing link between defence and midfield in this Arsenal side.

Posted by abdulaziz on 11/29/2010

I honestly feel arsenal have forgotten the basics of defending. This I truly believe will be the determining factor in our ability to win the title or not. Our attack is comparable to none but unless we improve our defending I really don't see us winning the title. Good win though nd let's hope we can improve our home form to boot

Arsenal comes to the stage of lacking spiritual confidence to say loudly and confidently 'yes I'm a winner', even at leading by a cushion goal:

Goalie performed good but not forceful enough
Defend performed hard but not solid enough
Striker played well and lack penetration sharpness so keep passing sideway.

Wenger has to think other option as defensive midfielders to replace the attacking midfielders is no way to re-gain the confidence of the team ( just hold the slim advantage )

One booster / quick option is to win the League Cup ( Carling Cup). Suggest Van Persie be there at Tue night to gain match fitness.

It was an important win but we must learn to kill games off and defend well. Solid defending has been the problem of this team. Arsene Wenger must address this problem if he wants to achieve success and ultimately prevent mad men like Mourinho from launching scathing attacks on him.

Prof. should work on his defenders, i prefer will use Djouro instead of Konscieny because he lacks confidence at the moment. Please, they should check on Vermalaen because will need him against Man United.

Posted by midas on 11/29/2010

Arsenal needs to learn to kill games as soon as they have advantage such as the two goals we had against spurs and Villa recently. I believe Arsene should know as an experienced Mgr that killing a game should be change of tactics/formation, i.e put in more defensive minded midfielders and stop the elaborate passing. The 3 home loss we have had this season is too painful as we could have been very comfortable at the top now.Arsenal needs to be more ruthless by lesarning to take the chances that comes our way early in the game and killing it off at the later part

Arsenal stop wasting chances! Score when you can. Don't make easy games or winning games appear difficult. I watched almost every team that played on every weekends and when come to Arsenal, no one believe in shooting from a distance or score when they can at close range. Too many short or back passes will eventually get blocked and many imminent goals wasted. Lacked of ideas? Maybe! Not serious with the game? Maybe! Arsenal possession play is getting too frustrating cos fans want results. Results mean winning games and scoring goals.

I think we need coach like mouriho , cause Arsene wenger is no more active with his statics . Good win . but bad defence and lack of indicipline . Can we stop Man U in the carling cup ? I dont think so . Love GUNNERS .

Hello David...
Well, the tactics are there but the refinement in "killing off" games isn't. It comes with experience. It is obvious that Wenger wants to be able to do with Arsenal what Barca and the spanish team (and even Inter, at times last year in the CL)are capable of doing; defend by passing it around and keeping the ball away from the opponents. Inconsistency is there, yes, but think about it - we still haven't fielded the best 11 once this year. The way it is shaping up, come springtime we'll have RVP and Vermaelen in good shape and, hopefully, good form. Gotta admit, I am a big fan of Squillaci - just the sort of player we needed to complement Vermaelen in the middle. With LK and Djorou, plus Gibbs and Eboue, our defence will be rock solid and 8 deep for CL, not to mention ready to rumble for the northern trips to play the medievals. I am very excited and looking forward to the this very interesting season...

One word: teeth. Maybe it is a concept too old for these lads to comprehend, (though, young Wilshere and Song are the only ones that seem to employ it), but this team needs to learn to play with teeth.

We've always known they have the skill. They have proved this season they have the heart,(which they have certainly lacked in seasons past). But, the third fundamental element of the game they have not learned, and which Arsene Wenger cannot teach, is to play with teeth. Hard in the tackle, never a lack of judgment, 100 percent discipline 'till the final whistle is blown. Arsenal do not possess this ability and will not win the title without it.

As Mr. Young has stated, the better teams will expose this weakness. The Arsenal must transcend the gloss, fancy footwork, and cerebral training techniques, and just settle down and play the game the way it's supposed to be played: with teeth.

You've hit the nail on the head. AW is too committed to one style of play - lots of passing and pass it into the goal. Arsenal are so close to being a dominant team but they have to work on defence and using different types of attack such as long balls and crosses and shooting from outside the box when necessary. I can't stand Mourinho but he was successful because he could adapt his teams to his opponent's style of play. Come on AW, we're so close.

Well said and good write up...i just hope these players won't let the Manager down again cos really Arsen is doing everything possible in hes power its just left for the lads to do their manager proud...definitely more slip ups to come but i hope it wont be a determinant one. Other Teams aint playing too good as well so its all up to the consistent Team like Wenger as pointed. I was impressed with Rosicky on the day and Wilshere is just Magnificent. I still want more from Chamackh and the two back lines they should not be caught Ball watching...Go Gunnners dont let us down this time

A nice win at Villa but it only covers up the obvious weakness which this team has they cannot come out in the second half and maintain the form they had in the first what said at half time seems to put them in a dream.

Arsenal FC and Arsene Wenger should just style up! There is now an urgent need to score at least 3 goals in the first half every match. Defending is our biggest problem. Just as I said some time back, without the experienced (Premiership) Vermaleen, we are still in trouble coz Koscielny and Squillaci are still learning and they are not confident enough. Besides, why the hell, all these fellos are always caught napping! Can't they learn from experience. On many occassions, Arsenal always conceeds goals from organised counter attacks. They've never survived an organised counter attack! Wenger has to work on this. But first, we need at least 2 more defensive minded midfielders to cussion our current weak defence. Otherwise, like last year, we are likely to miss another open chance of winning Barclays League this year.

good win....
but i see some arsenal's weaknesses...

1. quite exposed to set pieces....
dunne always outclass our defenders in set
pieces which lead to clark's 2nd goal...
2. never take anything for granted..
we nearly throw 2 goal lead just like what
happened last week against spurs...
3. focus..
players needs to focus until the end of the
match...

lastly, be more consistent...
if we can improve this, we can challenge for the title...

Posted by Clecence on 11/30/2010

yap, gunners need to buy aggressive midfielders, which i think Mahamadu Diarra or Gokhan Inler are the best also upfront i think Benzema or Edin Dzeko is there for us

Posted by benjamin on 11/30/2010

whether Fabregas, van Persie or even henry viera, bergkamp or Seaman are there,Arsenal will loose at Old Trafford.

Posted by Omoh on 11/30/2010

Every time the league is handed to us, we throw it away! Arsenal currently lack the spirit of champions, that's not surprising seeing its quite a while they won anything. They need to maintain the same level of confidence and play throughout a game and be consistent in their run of games. And like I always say, they don't have to pass the ball into the net, when an opportunity comes, take it, it's annoying to see a striker stand before goal and pass the ball sideways or even backward... that can make a lot of difference

Posted by Glenn on 12/01/2010

Arsene finally got it right, it was good to get back in to winning form, I am a passionate Arsenal supporter and am frustrated at how we can control games then lose that control so quickly, the games against Braga & Tottenham were a good example, we should have won both games, at tottenham they played a smarter 2nd half, we were very lax in our 2nd half approach, our backs are out of sorts with the loss of vermaelen, i think that Chamakh needs to be rested, he can be very lazy with the ball when in open play, he is effective in the air but does not receive the ball where he needs it, that comes from lazy passes and crosses, if RVP is good enough for the bench maybe we should try starting him and giving chamakh a rest he would make a good strike player late in the game, we need to start our best 11 each game if we are to challenge for the title. come on you gunners.

Finally, a great display of attacking from the Gunners... Though it hides some defensive loopholes, it is something we have missed seeing from a few games ago. Attack, attack and attack. It's Arsenal's best defense.
I thought Arshavin was amazing. Taking on 3 defenders before scoring and showing great vision in making the pass for Nasri to score from a corner.
It's true that the defense will need some more time to strengthen. Koscielny is perhaps too honest. Hopes he adapts fast.
Another great win to Wigan. Let's win the Carling Cup this season!!! And stay fit, guys!!
