Lessons that were learned from the home game against Newcastle on Sunday:
- Lucasz Fabianski is still an accident waiting to happen the moment he is asked to make an actual decision rather than be called upon to make an instinctive save.
- Cesc Fabregas is badly out of form at the moment. Every player suffers dips in form; but if it is a player whom the team rely on heavily, then it is harder to paper over the cracks.
- When Theo Walcott comes up against a full-back who is at least as quick as him, he doesn’t have much in the way of a Plan B up his sleeve.
- On the evidence of his appearance yesterday, Robin Van Persie is not ready to be “rushed back”. He looked miles off the pace.

The bottom line was that the Gunners did not play with anything like the tempo, passion and heart that is required to win a Premier League game yesterday and they got exactly what they deserved. The West Ham game last week might have been a little frustrating but at least chances were created – and, in the end, one was finally taken. Yesterday though, Arsenal only threatened rarely and there was never any real belief that the players could pull anything out of the hat as the clock ticked down.
Credit must be given to Newcastle. They were strong, well-organised and defended well. They took their chance and held their lead with some comfort. In contrast, Arsenal looked jaded, lacklustre and just plain unmotivated. For a home game against a newly-promoted team, this was really unforgiveable.
There isn't much more to say about it. It was a very, very bad day at the office and the players need to have a long hard look at themselves to work why they were so poor.
With Chelsea losing at Anfield, the Gunners missed the opportunity to make up some ground at the top. As it is, the Champion’s 2-0 defeat meant that the damage caused by the Newcastle loss is limited. However, come the end of the season, if Arsene Wenger’s team fall just short, people will be looking back to yesterday and the defeat at home to West Brom for the reasons why.
Arsenal don’t have any time to feel sorry for themselves. With a full midweek Premier League programme this week, the players have to sort themselves out ahead of trips to Wolves on Wednesday and Everton on Sunday. To get anything from those games they are going to have to show considerably more fight than they did yesterday.

I love this analysis. Walcot doesn not have second option. I wonder if he doesnt look at messi. When a place is tight for him, he switch to the other side vise versa. Wenger should have removed Fabrigas instead of Wilshare. I have also continued to say it that manone is the better goalkeeper we have. Tall, composed and tactful. It was too early to clamour for Fabianski who is nervours. Rosisky would have been a better player to Bendtner or Ashavin.
Wenger should learn.

Yesterday's game really was very frustrating and it's very easy to conclude that with this kind of trend (lack of consistency) the Title hopes are a day-time dream. It is strange to find out that our team several times fails to take advantage of playing at home. I even think that our second round games against Liverpool, Man City, and Chelsea will be determined by the then form with nothing to rely regarding being at Home Ground. Gunners for ever.

Arsene, plz respect the game, respect other teams, and most of all respect the fans.
we are losing patience...
Its not because we lose at home again but its the same shit you have been talking.
So its time for change, either u will bring to the club or the club will bring to you.

you're 100% correct
I was really starting to believe that Lukaz and Theo were finally ready, but....
RVP is over rated I think, and Chamakh had is his first poor game
this now makes 2 home losses to newly promoted teams. Those 6 points plus those dropped at Sunderland mean that Arsenal COULD have been top of the table, had they taken care of business

"- Lucasz Fabianski is still an accident waiting to happen the moment he is asked to make an actual decision rather than be called upon to make an instinctive save. "
The man didn't cover himself in glory, but I think you should apportion some blame to the defenders who are supposedly well aware of Andy Carroll, yet chose to let him run unimpeded on goal. The guy would have gotten a free header anyway...

David: Do you think it is time for the AFC Board to start considering a successor to AW? And to do so carefully and cautiously, perhaps lining up someone for 2011? It seems to me that he has done all he can and that he cannot resolve the chronic problems of the team such as its flimsy Back 5 and overall mental flakiness. At the moment it seems the only argument for keeping him is to prevent a possible deterioration after he leaves, especially given that so many of the team are 'his' players tied more to AW than the club itself and likely to want to move on in his wake, thus precipitating a long rebuilding process. But other than that, it seems to me he is no longer capable of much more than a holding operation. Yes, the team is capable of beating anyone on their day. But at the same time, they are equally capable of being *beaten* by anyone on their day: the polar opposite of 'The Invincibles'. And I can't see that changing given the number of 'greenhouse kids' in team ...

I would like to believe that Fabianski made a terible error in judgement and should have done better than that.
In a nutshell,The Gunners will better there performances if they could make some tactical changes. etc, like practice more on there shooting abilities within and outside the six yards rather than walking the balls which they are many times so guilty of doing.

inconsistensy never leads anywhere, the premiership is a marathon, never a sprint. so slow and steady always carries the day.still too early to call but am tempted to feel that these young guns might fail at the stage they've consistently failed in the last five years i.e the Feb-March period when a packed fixture schedule(domestic cups,Euro 2012,champions league), injuries, fatigue, suspensions all come to play. The premier league is still likely to even out as a two horse race between (you know who)with time.

Well written. It's absolutely unforgivable for a team with designs at winning the title to lose to newly promoted opponents at home, not once but TWICE already. Everytime we get optimistic that this might be the year that the youngsters are finally going to come good, that Wenger's youth policy will finally bear fruit, we're brought crashing back to earth.
I seriously hope that Wenger will invest in a goalkeeper now. We're lucky that no team is running away at the top yet...and we still have a chance. But something seriously has to be done about the keeping situation.

Was i surprised at the result sorry to say no after the last few home games the odds on Newcastle getting something from this game were high.Arsenal won all the stats except one goals Newcastle had a chance and took it cannot really blame goalkeeper to much after all he was the only one who did not have his feet on the ground the rest of the defense was standing looking up no one thought to jump to challenge in the air to give a center forward like that a free header you are asking for him to score.Newcastle are a good team who came with a plan they backed each other up in defense made sure they stopped Arsenal short passing game which just did not work every time Arsenal come up against a well organized defense they tend to fail or grab a goal at the last minute;they have the playing talent just cannot put it into practice just cannot work out what piece of the puzzle is missing.

I agree with the comments of David Young. One thing that baffles me is that many occassions, Arsenal could have got early goals by shooting instead of making that final pass to someone to `walk the ball'into goal. In the last game there were 2 clear chances of this which would very likely ended up in the net. Fab was really out of form most of the time. Walcott was ineffective very early in the game. Arsene should have repaced this 2 early. But then again we all put our faith in him and hope that the future will be good for us with this faith........

Same old story. Arsenal lack the spark, quality and depth of Champions. They also struggle to compete physically with the bigger teams, and it's because AW continues to pick up lightweights instead of some solid players in the mould of Vidic, Essien, Terry, etc. Whilst those sorts of players don't grow on trees, at least Sol Campbell gave us some grunt at the back last year when called upon. Also, Fabianski has performed well in recent weeks, but was again exposed when asked a big question, as did his two defenders who watched Carroll rise high above them instead of putting in a challenge. We need Schwarzer between the sticks to help calm down the back line and provide some confidence. We also need an alternative game plan when our passing game is off. AW needs to be less predictable in this area and come up with something to surprise the opposition, otherwise it's another trophyless season. OGB

Couldn't of said it better myself. 'jaded, lacklustre, and just plain unmotivated'. What happened to the great team spirit, fight and heart that typifies Arsenal. We were poorer then poor and got what we deserved. Cesc is really struggling at the moment. One wonders how much that hamstring is playing on his mind. Or how much his mind is playing on that 'hamstring'.

Soccer game is like playing chess. Goalkeeper is King. You must have a good strategy to conquer the King. The positioning of the player especially striker is really important so that every cross and pass shall reached on their head or legs. To score the goal, the mentality of Arsenal forward shall be changed. They must aggressive, create enough space by using body contact or (set pieces)and launching bullet shot on goal. No need to pass the ball inside penalty box. Its really frustrating to see Arsenal play like this in the box. If you given 10 chances, take at least 50%. Shot and score the goal... And don't smile if you cannot score. Please show a bit frustrated once fail to score and show that you are very serious to win game. 70% possesion is nothing if Arsenal loose the game.

Arsenals failure to wim anything in 5 years is Wengers inability to recognise that the spine of the team is all important. Remember Adams, Keown, Bould, Dixon, Winterburn, Seaman, Viera etc. M Utd & chelsea have always been "hard" in that area.
Flapianski, no centre backs and no defence in the middle.
Another losing season

I sincerely hope he will start tomorrow. This is not on.
Also, it is time for clichy to go. He is far too prone to error. I'm most otherwise satisfied with our centrrebacks especially with vermaelen still to return.
As to your comments on van persie. He has remarkable touch for someone who has been out for so long, and you can see he only lacks match fitness. His return is more welcome than you make out to be.
On the other hand, bendtner needs to get in there more.
Fab and Walcott also could have played better yes

- Lucasz Fabianski is still an accident waiting to happen the moment he is asked to make an actual decision rather than be called upon to make an instinctive save.
I disagree. He was jumping from a stationary position. I doubt there is anything different he could have done. Retreat to his goalline instead of jump against Carrol would definitely have been a goal too. I thought he decision at least gave us a chance after Carrol lost his marker.
- Cesc Fabregas is badly out of form at the moment. Every player suffers dips in form; but if it is a player whom the team rely on heavily, then it is harder to paper over the cracks.
Agreed. Should have rested him.
- When Theo Walcott comes up against a full-back who is at least as quick as him, he doesn’t have much in the way of a Plan B up his sleeve.
Enrique is no where near walcott's pace - > the deep defence limited his chance to run pass t
- Robin Van Persie is not ready to be “rushed back”.
I thought he played ok. Supply was scarse

David,
1. is there anybody who can persuade Wenger to invest into a new keeper and sack Fabianski and Almunia?
2. do we have to wait years to get over Fabianski and Almunia (knowing when Fabianski is playing himself out of the starting 11, then Almunia comes back)?
3. Do Szeczny and Mannone have real chances to become Arsenal's #1 within a year or so or if not why are they not sent out to another PL club to improve??
Thanks in advance.

Agreed. I would just say that if not for the goal at the time it cam I believe we would have gone on to win the game but by my count we have now dropped seven points to goalkeeping errors this term already and while the situation remains unaddressed we have no chance of winning the league. You can get away with the goalkeeping error rate in the cups but over the course of a league season you will get found out. Keepers like Schmeichel, Seaman, Given and Cech are worth about 12-15 points a season while ours are costing the same amount while also undermining the confidence of the whole team. It's unacceptable.

well they got beaten @ HOME again, this is not the quality of a true CHAMPION, losing 6 points at home to an inferior team not good signs at all and its no excuse really, Chelsea or Man U wont loose like that @ home...they wont even seek a draw to bottom teams like these ones. i honestly thought that team sheet was the best so far this season and playing at home we shouldn't have been short of three points. If Arsenal truly wants to challenge then they better stop being second best @ the Emirates, remember all the top 4s are still coming there...enough said.

Enough is enough. I really thought this was our year and I've been extremely patient with this "maturing" team. All Arsenal fans have. Our patience has run out though.
None of this crop (minus Wilshere, Nasri, and on some days, Walcott and Arshavin) can win a title. It's blatantly obvious by now.
Robin van Persie can't stay healthy, he just can't. Time to ship him off for the highest price before he becomes valueless. Fabregas should be shipped off as well. He's also starting to become majorly injury-prone as well and I'm tired of the "will he stay, will he go" soap opera. Just sell him to Barca for 50m pounds where he'll sit on the bench. Take that money (plus money for Almunia/Fabianski() and buy SHAY GIVEN and keep Mannone and Schzeny (sp) on for goalkeepers-in-training. Also, buy a second CDM to help Song, and buy a midfield playmaker in the form of Van der Vaart.
This isn't an impulse reaction after a loss. I'm just tired of this bunch of players who don't know how to win

I feel that Wenger is not brave enough to substitute fabregas even though he is not playing well. He made the wrong substition that day. Van Persie is not ready. He should substitute wishere with rosicky, walcott with arshavin. Keep chamakh and substitute fabregas with bendtner. Newcastle defended very tightly at the centre. Not easy to pass the ball through the centre. They should try to cross the ball to chamakh and bendtner to head in. Place nasri and arshavin outside the penalty box for long range shooting. With chamakh and bendtner as striker, arsenal defender or mid field can try to loop long range high ball to the chamakh or bendtner to speed up the attack. Arshavin or nasri can be place behind them as support so that the two tall striker can knock the ball down to arshavin or nasri to pass or shoot.
 |
Posted by Philip on 11/09/2010
The goalkeeping "woes" are exaggerated. One nil, on a contested header, where the striker was unmarked cannot be put on the keeper's head.
Fabergas and RVP need to sit until healthy. There is sufficient talent, but everyone needs to pull their weight.
Walcott cannot let the TH talk go to his head. He always cut inside, looking to score, instead of getting width and crossing. No one has enough pace, strength, or any other asset in the EPL if they become predictable. His game was predictable Sunday.
 |
Posted by Francis Sim on 11/09/2010
I saw the replay of the goal and it appears that the marker was Chamakh. I would say that his slack marking contributed partially to the goal. Given the recent form for Fabianski, I have to say that he is doing quite well but the rest of the team seems lacklustre at best. The team is over-passing the ball way too much. We need to be a bit more direct.

I am sick over our two losses this week, particularly to freakin' Newcastle, coached by an ex-Spur as they are, and employer of that hack Joey Barton (who should have been sent off in our League Cup match two weeks ago). At the end of our loss to WBA, we still created numerous chances to tie the game late. Against Newcastle, we didn't apply any late pressure. The only thing that cheered me up this weekend was Bolton's spanking of the hysterically over-rated Spurs. If we can't beat newly promoted sides at home, how can we expect to beat relegation-threatened teams away? With the Gunners' current mental state, I'm more worried about Wolves at Molineaux on Wednesday than I would have been and I do dread our trip to Goodison on Sunday. I remain optimistic, though, because there our schedule may bode well for the future: we've already played all but 2 of the top 10 teams in the week 11 table and have played only 4 of the teams in the bottom half. C'mon you Gunners!

Wrong strategy again, Wenger:
Only in form players be selected, disregard their fame. Players should perform well to get the seat, no matter it is Captain or keeper.
Not the right time for van Persie to gain match fitness when trailing one goal down. Even Torres need more matches to gain his sharpness, no way van Persie can do miracle.
Why not try 2 tall strikers to break Newcastle defence. Even Spain national team has one strategy to ready a tall striker besides D Villa and F Torres

'Lucasz Fabianski is still an accident waiting to happen the moment he is asked to make an actual decision rather than be called upon to make an instinctive save'
can't agree more. i want to add more. Fabianski is not strong, can't reach higher than the strikers head, don't have the strength to fight against the very strong center forward(most of the epl clubs have) etc..etc..
plus.. i never had a very bad feeling when the opponent cross the ball or put a high ball in the penalty area when Seaman, or Lehmann were between the post. damn.. i can get a heart attack watching this mistake prone goalkeeper..
ARSENE WENGER.. if you really really don't want to spend for a new goalkeeper, just put Wojciech Szczęsny between the post. he is better than Fabianski and can get better if you give him more playing time. who care about the age. Iker Casillas started for Real Madrid at the age 18 or 19. IF HE GOOD, HE WILL BE GOOD....

Today's game against Wolves plus this Sunday's game against Everton will give us a very good picture on all of the above comments. As far as I know Mr. Wenger, there will be no any significant changes on teh squad. We will continue to see Fabiansk at the Goal posts and for any error, the stories will be the same...he is still young..lets give him time..!! At teh end, another trophiless season.

In our short memory, Arsenal is definitely capable of dropping points in such way.It has been so,for past few seasons, rather than the past few months.
It's something we have to get used to 'cos the team is not like Man U or Chelsea. You can see Man U players (probably the same for the Invincibles years ago) hold their lives closely against loss. They just won't accept failure.Even a goal down or levelled, they don't just give excuse that it must be a tough day today. They just go on and make the day theirs. It demands great belief and drive to act instead of fighting blindly or acting enough to justify their loss of form.If they could do it,I believe we,Arsenal, can do it too (actually we have done it long ago).
I don't think all the talk about how good the players are after each win is giving any benefit. It just bring them to sky high and make them forget to commit more next time. It's bad mentally and physically. They should just shut up and speak of how great they are when lifting cups

We play too frequently, every 3 days, with nearly same squat. We have to late young player to play some minor game. Against Newcastle we can use young midfield and striker, because the main just come back from Europe game. There still FA and Carling, let youngers play and rest main guys.

-Fabianski delievered his best game for arsenal recently.I think it was against west ham.Part of the fault also lies with the defenders who should have marked carroll more tightly. We're missing Vermaelan here and I'm still not convinced konchiesnky or squelianci would make the cut.
-Yes Fabregas is out of form and Nasri should temporarily replace him as a playmaker to give some competition for fabregas.
-Theo is only 21 and is not the finished article yet.Besides I can barely think of any defenders that might be as fast as walcott.Maybe ashely cole to a certain extend but still debatable.
-Rvp is not overated, just injury prone.I believe on his day he's even better than rooney.7 goals and 7 assist in 11 games before he got injured last season speaks for itself.
Rvp and fab are our 2 most important players.Think liverpool with torres injured and gerrad out of form and chelsea with lampard out and drogba out of form.Well chelsea do have the better backups but u get it.

I beg to differ with some points.
Against us, Newcastle played very very deep. It works against a player like Walcott, because he needs to get BEHIND the defence to wreck havoc.
It was not helped by the fact that Sagna was not overlapping to great effect, perhaps cause the defence and midfield was giving away possession unnecessarily and the whole team needed to drop back.
I feel that it was a day when the engine room of Arsenal failed and Newcastle playing deep did not help matters. The team seemed short of that usual panache and spark...

The more I look at Arsenal the more I dislike their 3 3 4 formation. Somehow it is not bringing out the best of the players they have. 1 5 5 or 2 4 4 is better. The lone striker always looks to isolated and the the two playing outwide are not playing forward and are not wingers either. Arshavin needs to play more central otherwise he is wasted and Walcott alway run inside with the ball instead of staying out wide and learning to cross the ball better. I still think the team has a lot of talent and the coach is one of the best.
This is going to be an interesting season right to the end all the top team will drop point. I also think Arsenal will have to beat the other big three this year to win the title, because they are losing points against weaker teams. And as long as they follow up losses with wins the disappointment is short lived. Still a long season no need to get down yet.

The invincibles of 2004 has a Dennis Bergkamp who is often used by Wenger as a second striker but plays the role of the current Cesc Fabregas. Cesc may have successfully replaced the Dutch master but the the void left by Vieira and Gilberto has yet to be effectively replace by Song, Denilson or Wilshere. Van Persie seemed to possess the talent and potential of Henry but his injury problems had hampered his progress. Chamakh is adapting well and has bagged some goals but is premature to predict he can be as proliferic as Henry. Nasri and Arshavin are more than capable to fill the void left by Freddie and Pires. In goal, neither Fabianski or Alumnia is good enough to be the next Seamen or even Lehman. The two present left backs are as good as Laurent and Cole. However, the two new centre backs Squillaci and Kosienclny is still adapting to the team, Djourou has just recovered and only Vermaelen good enough to compare withe likes of Keown or Sol of the past.
