Arsenal notched a highly significant and vitally important win at Eastlands yesterday. Though Manchester City were reduced to ten men from the fourth minute following Dedryk Boyata's sending off, it was a victory that was achieved through composure, focus and some style.
Boyata gave referee Mark Clattenburg little room for manoeuvre when felling Marouane Chamakh who was clear through on goal. Who knows how the match might have gone had it stayed eleven-men-per-side? We’ll never know. But playing against ten men presents its own challenges. Fortunately, City did not simply try to put ten men behind the ball and actually turned in a creditable performance with their reduced numbers. On the day though, Arsenal were too strong for them and the Gunners maintained their tempo and concentration levels to see the job through.

There were a few worrying moments. With yellow cards flying around like confetti in the first half, there was a fear that the referee might try to even the numbers up following the early sending off. Thankfully, Arsene Wenger’s men retained their discipline and kept everyone on the pitch.
When Cesc Fabregas missed his penalty late in the first half there was a nagging doubt that what happened at Sunderland would happen again at City. However, when Alex Song added to Samir Nasri’s first half strike, the match was over as a contest and Nicklas Bendtner’s cool finish with a couple of minutes to go was the icing on the cake.
As far as notable performances are concerned, Samir Nasri appears to be in the form of his life at the moment. His whole demeanour exudes confidence and the goals are starting to flow. Since recovering from the injury he suffered earlier in the season the Frenchman definitely looks like he has taken a step up and the challenge for him will be to maintain his current form until May.
Credit also has to go to Lucasz Fabianski. The much-maligned Pole turned in his best-ever Premier League performance, producing several crucial saves during the afternoon. However, it wasn’t just those that were impressive.
Over the past couple of years on this page, it has often been noted that Fabianski’s key strength is in making instinctive, reflex saves. The problems seem to begin when he actually has time to think about things. His decision-making is often suspect, his positioning can be poor and his dominance of the area is sometimes lacking. Yesterday though, everything he did, he did well and, added to the saves he made, it was a highly competent and professional performance.
Fabianski is going to have to turn in many more performances like yesterday’s to truly convince his doubters that he is the long-term man for the job, but it was a good day at the office for the Pole and he needs to build on the renewed confidence he has found in his recent displays.
Though Nasri and Fabianski have been singled out for praise, the display at Eastlands was very much a solid all-round team performance. In post-match interviews the manager and various players have talked about it being a turning point and a confidence booster and, hopefully, it was. It needs to be too. It was the first clean sheet away from home in the Premier League since January. Certainly, the Gunners need to show the sort of ruthlessness they produced yesterday far more often, particularly on the road, if they are genuinely going to be in the shake-up come May.
Yesterday’s win puts Arsene Wenger’s team in second place, five points behind Chelsea. With so much football still to be played, that is not a deficit that should be daunting anyone at the moment.
It is interesting that the fixtures computer has loaded Arsenal’s schedule with most of their high-profile away games in the first half of the season. Already, they have been to Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester City and next month the trip to Macnchester United will be added to that list. Getting these games out of the way early could be a significant advantage as the season wears on - assuming the team can remain within striking distance at the top of the table.
As things stand, the last five matches away from home this season will be at West Brom, Blackpool, Bolton, Stoke and Fulham. That is not to say that any of those games will be easy but playing those sides is preferable to going to Stamford Bridge and Old Trafford for potential “six-pointers”. Still, whilst that is maybe a note-worthy observation, we ought not to be getting too far ahead of ourselves and the focus must be on the next game only.
On Wednesday evening, Arsenal travel to Newcastle for a tricky Carling Cup tie with the Geordies. Arsene Wenger has appeared to change his approach towards the tournament this season and is likely to field a reasonably strong team at St James’ Park. With several big clubs already knocked out, the Gunners ought to be going all out to try to win this piece of silverware for the first time since 1993.
The level of difficulty the trip to the North East presents largely depends on which Newcastle United decides to show up. Hopefully it will be the one that lost at home to Blackpool in the Premier League earlier in the season rather than the one that disposed of Chelsea in the last round of this competition.

Crucial saves from brilliant Fabianski against Silva's attack, injected confidence of Arsenal players, to produce an entertaining football.
Wenger should maintain current momentum to clinch the League Cup by fielding some potential at the back and in front.

Arsenal deserved victory and the fact they had to do it against 10 men isnt there fault, city fans whining about chamakh diving is nonsense, the guy who got sent off didnt even protest like the city bench.ref was very poor in booking arsenal players for nothing tackles and i always thought he was waiting for chance to even things up,ha,ha ref we didnt give you that chance and just played our classy football in second half.

It was a commendable performance but we must work on penalties. The rate of misses is high and could be costly as we saw against Sunderland. The clean sheet was also particularly encouraging.

It appears that Fabianski is getting his confidence back. I do agree that his reflexes are good though his decision making leaves much to be desired. Even Arshavin was playing rather well for the match which is encouraging. I am quite tired of his apparent 'laziness' that he portrays.

WAO IT WAS A GOOD PERFORMANCE THEY PUT IN THAT DAY....THE PLAYERS SHOULD NOT RELENT ON THIS AS THIS IS JUST THE BEGINNING.

I was surprised to hear that Arsenal has won only 2 of the 7 matches they've played when Mark Clattenburg was the ref, and that City had won (or perhaps not lost) ALL their previous fixtures reffed by Clattenberg. Of the top match officials in England, Howard Webb and Clattenberg are the only ones I trust. Lee Mason isn't bad, either, but refs Atkinson, Dowd, and Dean are myopic prats and I doubt if our result at Eastlands would have been so positive if one of those morons had been in charge. I'm grateful, too, that the broadcast commentary was objective this time.

Morale boosting win and I'm glad that the doubters I normally hold discussions with are eating their words on Nasri. He is the future! It's mouth-watering right now looking at the midfield tho' my main concern is, unlike Chelsea, when we have Song advancing to beef up the attack, he leaves a very gaping hole in front of the not-so-convincing CBs. Denilson is a poor tackler and rarely recovers in time to thwart a counter down the centre. Squillaci is experienced but slow. Djorou looks one mistake away from a send off or leaking a goal (plus for his age he is unforgivingly slow)
Maybe that should be AW's area of focus come January..someone who can partner Song ala Essien-Ramires.
Tho' so far so good, especially on the creative side. The lads are industrious and we just need to convert 75% of the chances we create!

As I said last week: Nasri our most crucial player this season? Hands up anyone who guessed even 2 months ago that our keeper-centreback triangle for the biggest match of the season so far would be Fabianski-Djourou-Squillaci. They did enough to let us win. Could someone please provide stats on Arshavin's pass completion rate v Birmingham & v Man City? Still, kudos to Andrei for showing up deep in our goal area to bail Clichy and stop Tevez. Deepest trackback I've seen him do! Chamakh - when was the last time Arsenal had a centre-forward with such a smooth ability to head or hold the ball & bring others into the play? Your answers please in this thread. Way better than Adebayor in that respect. Speaking of "the traitor", am I the only one incensed at TV images of Song palling around with Adebayor. Doesn't he get how much we hate Adebayor? Hug him in the tunnel all you want, but spare us the "love and respect" on the field. Carling Cup: time for Bendtner & Walcott to step up. Go Gunners

I am happy that arsenal won. However we must not be contented as there are many area that we can improve. I feel that arsenal player can train more on long range shooting. I seldom see them shoot from long range even if they were given the chance. They must surprise the oponnent defenders and goal keeper by shooting when they don't expect you to do so. This can be done by very quick movement or fake trick. In order to score from long range, the shot must be powerful. All this required practice and training. Quite a disappointed performance by djourou. Luckily mancity didn't manage to capitalise on the mistake made by Djourou. I feel that either he improve or Wenger has to sell him and get a better defender. In the entire game, he has made few mistake. He is lack of pace and not strong enough to physically challenge the striker. This could be fatal in some games.

I posted on here a few months ago that there was no way Arsenal could win the (a?) title with the present quartet of keepers... Fabianski's recent performances are making me doubt the truth of those words.
Let's hope that Wednesday's match squad sees a core of 1st teamers inter-woven with injury returnees and the likes of Lansbury, Vela, and Emannuel-Thomas. I'd also love to see Sczenzy between the sticks for the first time.
Looking back though: well done gunners, can't wait to have Theo, RVP, and Ramsey back in the fold.

The boys proved that they have matuered and if they can keep that confidence in them, come may, they will be lifting trophies wherever they go.
My only worry, is that sometimes Arsen Wenger tends to ignore smaller silverware, but if he can start with smaller one's for the boys to know how joyfull it's to lift a trophie, that will give them the cofidence, killer instict, love & the desire to win bigger matches & bigger trophies.
Boys, i know you can do it, with style & execellence, pleaze we have been pacient for too long. Make us proud this season as we used to be before 2005. It has been an aeon for manys of us seeing you guys winning a trophie, lets fight to stop this just there, it's enough.
Wish you luck and fortune tomorrow at st james park....

Arsenal was imperious on sunday, they played like the team that has endeared a lot of us to the club over the years. love to see more of this type of game this season. Another thing I observed in the match against city was that Arsenal players refused to be bullied by the hard tackling city players, which is a new dimension to the Arsenl game, which I pray they keep up, I mean add some robust tacklinfg and a little bit of meanness to their game and Arsenal will top the EPL this season
 |
Posted by sam okebe on 10/26/2010
Chamakh has given us a whole new dimension upfront,he is clearly the difference between this and last season, making games easier for us with penalties and crutial goals. Nasri is on a class of his own right now.I am sure if we win all those away games coming up, we gonna be at the top of the table.
Lets just concentrate and take it game by game.

While the clean sheet away from home is to be commended, I fear it had more to do with Fabianski's individual performance (which on current evidence cannot yet be relied upon consistently) and our man-advantage (essentially good fortune). For me, watching Djourou and Squillaci caused far too many heart-pounding moments. Their positioning, marking, and anticipation were far outmatched by Tevez and Silva. Had Adam Johnson been on the pitch as well, I think they would have been overwhelmed.
I also worry about Alex Song. Last season he was a formidable shield for the back four. This season he seems to have more of an attacking brief and his defensive play seems to have slipped. Where he was once one of the best tacklers in the league, too often his challenges now seem clumsy. I hope he returns to a focus on his defensive duties and skills, putting out of his mind the desire to "add goals" to his game, which he expressed over the summer.

perfect oppoturnity to play Szczeny in goal, give vela, theo and chamack a chance to play together and sub 2 of the 3 out for Bendter and J-Emmanuel, then play ebuoe and gibbs in defense.
the midfield is also hot with denilson, rocisky, Henri, Nasri all leading contended.

it was a good win the fact city were reduced to ten men was a bonus but the player left the referee little option.Finishing still seems to be a problem Arsenal create three time as many chances as they take and create even more where they do not even take shots. Hopefully when van Persie returns they can take advantage off the set pieces. The Carling cup will be a good chance for those coming back from injure to get some game time.

It is good to see they win on the road and keep a cleansheet. But i would like them to be more ruthless especially only one goal ahead. Man City had their chances. If they convert one of those, the game might be different.

i agree with ifeanyi udemezue.....
arsenal must work on penalty...
we only have RvP, fab and nasri who are good penalty taker...
anyway, good win for arsenal...
this win surely will boost arsenal players to win the title..
this win showed arsenal can compete for the title..
i see fabregas isnt on his best but he did his best for the team...
the sending off is no doubt, boyata is the last man..
and chamakh didnt dive...
chamakh make opposition focus on him and open the spaces for other, good thing...
nasri gave a masterclass performance, keep it up..
song did well, but he must know his role as CDM..
clinical finish by bendtner, henry-style..
hopefully he's getting better and score more goals for arsenal...
but imo, MOTM is fabianski..
great save from silva, adebayor and balotelli...
hopefully arsenal can do the same when they travel to old trafford....
hail the gunners!!!!

The clean sheet, against a formidable offensive team, was the most encouraging part for me. We can also watch Nasri, and the rest of the midfield grow before our eyes.
This is going to be an interesting few months.

There are sign of maturity in this Arsenal squad. Now Arsenal are serious tittle contenders for they have depth in squad watch the likes of Jack Wilshire and how he filled the shoes of fabregas

It was good match alright. Thanks to City for sticking to good football. Arsenal had done well for this game and I suspect the sending off was a certain morale booster. Even with that they did struggle a little before the second goal came. The match was not short of tense moments and thanks to the positioning and occassional tumbling of Djourou. Surprise surprise, Andrei did a crucial tackle, bailing out Clichy, who is fond of making such mistakes. Song's form in the tackling is worrying. But there are few positives:I think Fabianski did extremely well for this game and to some extent had a big part in the win. Fabregas had been pivotal, providing the much needed boost to the team. Nasri was very lively and I am glad he scored that goal. But, I would not go that far to say Arsenal have turned the corner as this team have shown time and time again that they can be unpredictable and dramatic. But I sincerely hope this win will spur them on. The next match will be a good indicator.

Think I agree that Song should restrict his banter next time to the dressing room, Adebayor is not a friend to Arsenal Football Club and he should respect that. Also I noticed an improvement in Arshavin's attitude to the game, great track back on tevez almost thot I was dreaming! Still has got a lot of work to do though. Its amazing how slow Djourou is at his tender age, probably even slower than veteran Campbell! It was partnership that lacked pace and sharpness with Squillaci (hopefully the last) and we only have God and Boyata to thank for coming out unscathed. Kudos to Fabianski but I'm far from convinced, still has a whole lot to do to shed the "Flappyhandski" alias. Chamakh is a good player but nothing more. Finally, my adulations go to Samir, a real class act. City are quite fortunate not to have had the Wilshere - Nasri partnership or a club record defeat might have been in the offing!
Its a long season, good luck to the Gunners.

8 games down,30 more to go.
I have to say we are very lucky with a 5th minute sending off.11 vs 11 would be a very tight game.Glad to see Song scoring goals like that. That's the spot someone has to fill up behind or near Chakmah. He is just too closely marked.Welcome back, Bendtner! His 10+ goals are always appreciated. As for Nasri, hope he can become a great player this season. We badly need another star!!I wonder how Walcott fits in now.Oh God,we have such a strong squad.
Fabianski is doing good but he has to be careful too.A good keeper not only has to be quick and brave but also intelligent. There's a moment when he challenged Adebayor's header:it looked really dangerous.Luckily,Adebayor is no Drogba.
Arsenal might passed a tough test, but more to come.Hopefully,we can get the same kind of results from Old Trafford. This might not b enough as I don't see Chelsea dropping much points this season. They look the best at the moment. And btw,Arsenal is always strong in this part of the season

SkyDog, I thoroughly enjoyed the following idea:
"They must surprise the opponent defenders and goal keeper by shooting when they don't expect you to do so. This can be done by very quick movement or fake trick. In order to score from long range, the shot must be powerful."
Brilliant.

I had a good nights sleep for the victory over Manchester City. I lost hope before the match because I did not trust the defense and goal keeping. I had a feeling of being surprised atleast with a draw because of the presence of Fabrigas. Not always easy to play against 10 men if everyone returns to defend and looks for a draw. Luckily City did not do that.Though Arshavin gave an assist for Nasri's goal and unusually tracked back to assist Clichy who is easily beaten one on one compared to the younger gibbs, Arshavin is getting worse and worse instead of improving. His passes rarely reach their target and could lead to injuries on our players. He is not yet Arsenal material in his style of play, His shooting is rare and poorly targeted unlike when he joinded Arsenal newly.I would start Wiltshere instead of him. Djourou is a disaster waiting to happen.Too slow and heavy, makes crude challenges.Hope Vermaelen recovers fast.Wenger keep Fabiansky in goal for good.

Wow! more forceful than we expected for the League Cup from Arsenal and good chance for match fitness for those fresh from injury.
Next, don't underestimate West Ham, ( let WBA game be the history) and maintain the high spirit attitude for entertaining football we enjoyed - 12 goals from 3 games

theres a long way to go but we are looking pretty good at this stage, and i definetly like wengers new approach to the carlington cup.
in terms of defence we are getting better all round team defence and our attacking players seem to all be in form. it is goign to be very interesting to see the squad selection once van persie is ready. this is the first season in ages if one of our attacking players go out for a bit we are not at a lost.
i think nasri is probably our most in form player and a midfield featuring him, wiltshere, fabregas and asharvin is an unbelievably fantastic attacking option. i still think theo will be at his best bringign him on around the 60 minute when teams are getting tired his speed is unbelievable.
bendther is getting better every time i see him and the man has good control for a big man. i think we start with van persie and chamahk and then bring him and walcott on around the 60 minute.
our defence is getting better each game as well keep it up guys

The way things are going 4 Arsenal leaves one in no doubt that sooner than later some coaches will begin to encourage their players to get unnecessarily physical wit their tackles on arsenal playmakers especially the likes of Fabregas, Nasri,Theo, etc.
Arsene should take note nd prepare them ahead 4 such times.
GUNNERS 4 LIFE.
