So, the transfer window slammed shut for another few months on Tuesday evening and there was no late activity to report other than the loan moves of Armand Traore and Nacer Barazite to Juventus and Vitesse Arnhem respectively. That there was no new goalkeeper signed will be the biggest talking point amongst Arsenal fans.
The "goalkeeping situation" was not just a figment of fan-talk or internet hysterics, it is clearly an area that Arsene Wenger recognised needed addressing due to the fact that a formal bid was tabled for Fulham's Mark Schwarzer. Personally, I am not that disappointed that the Australian has not come. At his age, he was never going to be a long-term solution and the fact that it has taken until this point in his career for a big club to take a real interest in him rather suggests he is not actually that much better than what we already have.

That said, I do believe new blood was required. What Schwarzer would have brought was a change - and, even if a top-class keeper couldn’t be found, a change would have felt like a positive step forward from the current status quo where the impression is that Arsene Wenger keeps telling us we have four great goalkeepers but no one really believes him. You wonder whether the manager really believes it himself. Tellingly, whilst the club might have been trying to bring in a new senior goalkeeper, it seems that we have hardly had other teams queuing up to take either Almunia or Fabianski off our hands in order to make space.
So, for the time being, we have to make do with what we have got. Whatever reservations people have about Manuel Almunia, he has to be the first-choice goalkeeper. He is the best we have currently got and, in the cold light of day, he does make more saves than he costs the team games. He might not have the ability to add ten or fifteen points to Arsenal’s season in the way that David Seaman used to but most of the time he does a reasonable job. (It’s a shame we have to settle for "reasonable" though, isn’t it?). Now he knows he has at least until January as the Gunners’ likely number one, it is up to him to rise to the challenge, find some confidence and show the manager and fans that he is the man for the job. Time will tell whether he has it within him to do that.
The real worry is Fabianski. It will only take one injury to Manuel Almunia to see him promoted to first-choice and that is a prospect that sends shivers down the spine. I wish I could be charitable enough to call him “reasonable” too but he has had his chances and has spectacularly blown every one of them. Sadly, at a club like Arsenal, who have aspirations of being in a position to win things every year, you cannot get away with a goalkeeper who has proved himself to be a liability at this level. We can only hope that Almunia stays fit and the Pole’s opportunities are minimal between now and January when there will be another chance to review matters.
As for Vito Mannone and Wojciech Szczęsny, it will be interesting to see what happens with these two. It seems unlikely that Arsene Wenger will keep four goalkeepers on the books, so it is probable that one will go out on loan. Szczęsny returned from his loan spell with Brentford last season with rave reviews and many fans calling for him to be pushed up the pecking order. However, as always, the only opinion that matters is that of Arsene Wenger and we could get to see whether he rates the young Pole as highly as the hype surrounding him would have it.
Though the goalkeeping debate is the one that will rumble on past the closure of the window, Arsenal fans ought to be pretty content when looking at the business conducted over the summer as a whole. At the end of last season, most supporters, (at least, those with realistic expectations), were calling for a new goalkeeper, reinforcements at centre-back and a new striker. With the confirmation of the signing of Sebastien Squillaci last week added to the arrivals of Laurent Koscielny and Marouane Chamakh, Arsene Wenger has delivered what most have wanted - two new centre-backs who have a bit of age and experience behind them and striker who will give the front line some physical presence. On top of that, we have seen Jack Wilshere properly promoted to the first-team scene and, most critically, Barcelona’s attempts to sign Cesc Fabregas successfully rebuffed.
A new goalie would have completed the set but it was not be. Many supporters will be haranguing Wenger for failing throw some money at bringing a new face to keep goal but you can’t always get what you want and we all know that is not how he works. The situation puts pressure on him and, indeed, the goalkeepers at the club but it is up to them as professionals to respond to that pressure positively.
As we embark on the first international break of the season, and taking stock of the last few weeks, Arsenal supporters should also be very happy with the start that has been made to the campaign. Seven points have been taken from a possible nine and two traditionally tricky away games have been negotiated and gotten out of the way early.
Saturday’s victory at Blackburn was particularly pleasing. The clash of cultures between the Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal and teams managed by Sam Allardyce has been well-documented over the past decade and the Gunners have had some of their roughest days playing Allardyce sides. However, at the weekend, they held off plenty of late pressure from Rovers to cling onto their 2-1 lead.
It was excellent to see Theo Walcott picking straight up where he left off against Blackpool and notching the first goal. Again, he showed a degree of directness and assertiveness that has been missing during his time at Arsenal. If being left out of England’s World Cup squad in the summer has had the duel impact of both giving him a good rest and the time for him to consider that he has to start genuinely stepping up to the plate and raising his game, then that is all to the good.
He got plenty of criticism last season from pundits and fans, myself included, and it is hard to argue that it wasn’t deserved. However, nothing would please me more than if he made a telling contribution to Arsenal’s campaign this time round and proved his doubters wrong. The fact he has already equalled his previous best-ever goal tally in a Premier League season surely bodes well for the months ahead.
It was disappointing to see that Robin Van Persie picked up an ankle injury in Saturday’s match. Hopefully, it won’t keep him out for too long. Cesc Fabregas still looked a little short of complete fitness but another couple of weeks should see him right.
Usually it is a shame to see players go off on international duty but, with a solid start to the season banked, it will give everyone a few more weeks to pull themselves up to full pace (assuming they don’t return with injured!). It’s been a good start. Let’s hope the players can build on it further when they return.

What are you on about, we got rid of frances 1st choice centre back for there 4/5 choice, kos hasn't looked that bad but no reAl improvement on what we had befoe in terms of numbers ATM we are way down on last year, I'm not fussed about the Gk situation it's just those around him need to keep concentration and postional sense no names (clichy)!!!! Diaby. Is a true starter for arsenal I he focus for the full 90

I partly aggree with the writer that Shhwarzer was going to be a short term gain. So lets give Almunia time til THE Jan. transfers....... I also think it will give him confidence to prove that is an asset......

With time,I have come to believe that the arsenal coach and the whole board have run out of new ideas for the club cuz the way they look at things is not the same way we the fans look at them. For sure arsenal needed a new goalkeeper. As long as Almunia is still in goal and wenger is still coach with the current board, Arsenal will never win anything, never!!!!

David, are you not in agreenment that Arsene Wenger already unsettled Almunia by making offers for other goalkeepers? Now, by not getting a new #1 , I think it shows that were "stuck" with him. That can't give him much confidence when obviously the manager has no trust in him don't you think? I personally would go the youth route, and go with Manonne, or Szczesny and let the chips fall where they may. The only way they will get experience, is by giving it to them. Joe Hart is showing that he's quite capable at a young age, why not these guys? Every year Almunia costs us at least six to nine points, and we both know that that could be the difference between getting a trophy this year or not. I look forward to your reply.
DY replies:
Almunia has said his confidence has been undermined by all the talk of a new goalkeeper being signed and I can understand his point. However, you don't become a professional footballer if you don't have a certain amount of self-belief and if you crumble every time you get a psychological knock then you aren't going to get very far. Almunia has to draw on his own reserves and show what he can do. The next few months will be a real test for him but dealing with this sort of pressure ought to be what footballers are paid thousands of pounds a week for.

Not fully fit player easy to get hurt, why keep field in Van Persie ... he may req to develop match fitness from the game but not at the well known rough game against Blackburn. We may miss him at Stamford Bridge on 10 Oct 10 - one the vital game for the lead.
Shaky defence is a problem than 'reasonable' goal-keeping in Arsenal,( except goalkeeping by Fabianski); no soundful physical strength and outpaced by striker to lose vital goal are few of problems to solve out
Please don't bring in player over 30, even goalie, that is no long term solution

As always your comments are right on the money. Hopefully all the transfer talk surrounding a new keeper will give Almunia the kick in the arse he needs to step up to the plate. Thanks for a great read and keep up the good work.

Once again, well said, David. I agree that it was frustrating we could not bring in a new 'keeper, even for the short-term, like Schwarzer, but in regard to the other business with signing players, we as Arsenal fans should be quite pleased with has been brought it. Simultaneously, with RvP and others injured, we seem to have the depth to deal with injury problem, barring an injury crisis we saw at the end of the past 2 seasons.
I was hoping for you to write and tell us your thoughts on the whole 25-man squad rules that has been instituted for the upcoming season. We know Prof. Wenger is clearly against it. And it is a blatant rule to 'improve' the depth of talented English players for the national squad, something you, nor I, care for. What do you think of them? Clearly this is a hindrance to our team and the way the squad is planned out to compete in the different competitions, right?
David Young replies:
I think Arsene Wenger has given the perfect response to this ridiculous rule in the squad he submitted. Only 20 players named; none of the seven nominated home-grown players were English and 56 under-21s added to the list. Hahaha.
It's a farcical rule that won't make the England team any stronger - either now or in the future. The FA would be better off spending their time trying to address the fact that vast numbers of English kids prefer to play FIFA on their computers rather than actually have a kickabout in the street or in the park these days. They might also want to have a look at the decline of sport played in schools and the decrease in the number of public playing fields.
None of those things would be a complete cure for a problem that has existed since 1966, but the FA taking care of grassroots matters would be more effective in improving the situation than imposing silly rules on the Premier League clubs who do more - both technically and financially - to develop top-level English players through their academies than the FA do.

I mostly agree with David's assessment. To respond to a couple of the other comments, Gallas may be France's (former) first choice ahead of Kos or Squillaci, but that is hardly much of a compliment! In any event, Gallas was demanding silly money and was a cancer in the dressing room, so good riddance. If Kos develops into another Vermaelen, we will have done very well, and Squillaci is certainly an upgrade over the likes of Senderos and Silvestre.
As for the keeper, so many people are giving Arsene stick for missing out on Given when Man City would not have sold him to us anyway. People forget that even if we had unlimited funds, we can't get anyone we want. Man City likely would only have been willing to loan Given and even that only to a foreign team, certainly not a direct title rival like us. Remember that Cesc is still a Gunner for a similar reason. Schwarzer is a different matter, but like David, I don't rate him that highly.

David, it seems that Van Persie will always have fitness problems. Do you think he should be used off the bench as a sort of special weapon for games where he's needed? There is precedent for this, i.e. Pablo Aimar used to play sparingly for Valencia since he could never make it through an entire 90 minutes.

Arsene did not get a keeper, and that is a true bummer. But other problems are adrift now as well. Our LB situation could turn dire if the coach does not give Gibbs a first team chance. Clichy was at it again last weekend when he let a Diouf (sp?) slide past him for the equalizer; which seems a continuation of some of his poor play from last year. I would also like to see more of Wilshire (even though he missed a(n) (almost) sitter over the weekend... maybe he was thinking about what club he was going to go to that night?).
Go Gunners!!!

Schwarzer is an amazing keeper.
Loved the observation about Seaman worth 10/15 points a season. Schwarzer would almost garner the same at Arsenal now. 2010. Probably 20+ points at Fulham. The comment along the lines of 'No real interest from big clubs indicates he isn't beter than Almunia..' is farcical...a big miss in the transfer window.
I would have parted with double the transfer using recent fees for Koscielny etc as comparison.
Too old? Next 3 championships would be ours if we signed him.

Dissapointing. As the transfer window closed, it is yet again apparent that Arsene and the clowns of the board have not been serious about challenging for honours. I agree that Schwarzer may not have been the best of option to remedy the weakest area in the team. But why have Arsenal been focussing on the lousiest of the option throughout the transfer window? It boils down to shrewd business again. The philosophy of getting players on the cheap, even if it means not getting players of the right calibre has plagued the team in recent times. I certainly do not agree that Arsenal supporters would be pleased with business done over the past few months. So what that he has gotten 2 centre-backs and a striker. Based on the standard of signings we are not to be too assured of success immediately. I think giving Szczesny a run will yield some good. We may lose some points but he may well get the necessary experience to grow into the team. To settle for second best is not new, but dissapointing

arsenal goalkeeper Alumina is a good shot stopper as long as the ball is on the ground, when the ball is in the air you see his weakness he can not command the goal area punching is weak he will cost points unless he can improve. the game at Blackburn was a prime example they know that arsenal are vunerable in this part of the game hence there goalkeeper pumping balls from free kicks into the area. arsenal kept them out but they did not look like they had much faith in there keeper to come off his line and deal with them. it was a good win at Blackburn as arsenal have struggled in the past with this style of play but i never felt they were in control of the game and was glad when the final whistle went.

Agreed with your article David, but can you please not allow silly comments such as the first one (not saying any names) to be posted. How can he not see the improvements made in this squad besides the GK is beyond me. And his comment on Diaby? laughable at best. the man loses possession almost every time and slows down our play too much, the argument that he brings much needed height is a joke, the guy is 6,3 and yet won 38% of his aerial battles last season. Despite the 3 quality additions to the side this summer i feel the best addition to the first team squad is Jack Wilshere, what a player. I hate these internationals though, just as the season gets under away and you have to resort to watching the boring England side again is painfull. can't wait for the Bolton game.

its nice for arsene not to sign schwarzer though we were in need, bcoz he is old and his solution wont last for more than two years. we need to traing vito manone and get the best out of him. he has never disappointed arsenal fans when he is in our goal posts, almunia is still goo as well and fabiansky needs tailoring which will take us long. lets all pray and hope that goal keeping won't be a mess this season and we see how go ahead to beat all clubs to the trophy. Once again good luck.

David, I think Almunia needed some competition before he can "up" his game. If Mark had come, Almunia would have grafted for a place and every opportunity would have been utilized to his best. Now he is sure he has no competition (atleast until January) and this is a big gamble because all points matter before January.
 |
Posted by Ryo on 09/02/2010
I would say, give Vito Manonne the opportunity to start like how Man City gave Joe Hart the opportunity.
Vito shown us last season he is a good shot stopper, although not quite good at handling crosses (the Iker Casillas mould perhaps?)
Honestly, if Arsene Wenger's vision is to build a young team to challenge for many years to come, why stick with Almunia who blows hot and cold?
I really hope to see some RADICAL changes to his goalkeeper selection.
p/s I've just noticed how I left out Fabianski completely in my post. That goes to show no fans will miss him if/when he leaves.

Nicely written piece. Every Gooner knows that we'll have a bad patch when November and December comes. It happens every year!! Let's see what Almunia can do this year round eh? RVP will always get injured if he keeps putting in those weak tackles... Does he know how to make a decent tackle?

Arsenal will not win anything this season and that's something we fans have to accept, sad but true. One of the most important positions on the field has been our weakest link over the last few seasons but the Board and Wenger has not taken the weakness seriously enough to offer a resoluation.
The fight for the Championship title will be much tighter this season with Man City, Spurs joining the Big 4 and dropping points due to goalkeeping weakness would be our undoing. I can only pity the rest of the team who play their hearts out only to be let down by a drop of the ball or poor judgement etc by one team members. Its a very disappointing and sad situation for fans year after year but that's the price we have to pay for being an Arsenal fan. As long as Wenger is in charge, Arsenal will continue to be also-ran.

I hope my comments are posted because in as much as I am happy with arsene wenger's aquisition. I still question some things he does. How come its always easy to sell to other clubs and we can cant buy from them. We sold both Adebayo and Kolo Toure to Mancity even though they were our rival clubs and yet we cant even get Shay Given from them onloan..Arsene wenger should be more critical when selling. He dosent know everything. I hope the fact we havent bought a a GoalKeeper dosent cost us points before January. Almunia is not a good keeper and arsene wenger knows it. He would atleast had gotten Vincent Enyeama.

With the new additions, especially in the defence department, we'll be even more competitive than last season!!! all those that doubt Almunia's potential you need not to look very far than his performance in CL home game against Barc. Again, trust the Professor.

Although the new additions injected new hope and expectations, i think what's important is for the seasoned players to continue to improve ( especially diaby and clichy ). Personally, i feel rosicky should be given a start instead of wilshere. To be honest even though wilshere is a hot prospect, he's still too young and inexperienced to feature in every game. (i would say he played a part in liverpool's goal for missing the ball from arshavin ). And more significantly, I genuinely believe that Diaby has got a vital role to play in our ambitions. He may lack concentration, speed in thought and decision-making skills on the final ball, but what he does add is physique to our already miniature midfield players (apart from Song who must be our no.1 DM for sure). Also he runs at defenders and is skilful and shields the ball pretty well and has shown improvements. Clichy is another quality LB who if anything needs to improve on his marking and concentration. All the best Gunners!

Thanks David, I agree we should wait till January before we access Alumunia again, but I think the entire Arsenal players need to show more commitment, this is still lacking in some of our players today, we are not playing with deep hunger, we need it to win honours.

I have tactical idea that wenger can use again man u, chelsea and man city. if all player are free from injury at back area. why we do not try sagna, squi, kos, clicy at back 4 and to protect a back 4 we put verminator to play song role. that's true verminator suitable and comfortable at back but for me asset, power and ability that's verminator have aggressive, strong, fast, can read game very well and can do what mostly arsenal midfield cannot do "shot" from long range. it will change our game without change our beautiful game. just my stupid suggestion but i really want wenger read and think about this.

i think that Alumnia is good GK ..but the problem we have now is we do not have a solid defence start from the defensive middfielder, if we have a solid defence atleast it will cover up our GK in so places , there is no GK in this world that is 100 % perfect except he has a very strong defenders around him , look teams like man U and chelsea you find it hard to shoot at goal bcos the defenders wont give u that opportunity to do so and with this the keeper has less work to do.Please arsene wenger should forget abt the signing of a new GK for now Alumnia is good atleast is among top 4 gk in EPL he should think of buy more quality players.

Why is everyone blaming Almunia for Arsenal's weakness. Before the ball goes to the keeper, it passes through the defense, i think we should all encourage our defenders especially Clichy to up their socks as well.I think it is very unfair to put all the blame on Almnuia yet we have 10 other players in the field to protect him.Our defenders need tp pull up their socks as well, how many times do strikers get closer to Peter Cech of Chelsea??very few times,if you compare that to Almunia then we are being unfair to him.Song must learn that he is a defensive player, there is no need of him running in front every time.Almunia will impeove and so must the defense.
 |

Jack, its not that our defence allow the opposition too many shots, we only had 4 more shots on target against us last season than man u, yet Almunia had the 4th worst save % in the league.
@ Kevin- Diaby runs at defenders? watch carefully, he only runs in circles.

I don't understand the stick that Wenger have been getting especially from some of the so-called Arsenal Fans. Such an ungrateful bunch. Yes, we have been trophyless for 5 years but I can't see anyone better at Arsenal than Wenger. Those that crucify him think they can do a better job than him?? Please, don't make me laugh. He's always known for making good buys... look at Arshavin, Vermanator, Fabregas, etc. etc. etc.... Anyway, I think despite the occasional blunders that Almunia makes, he's overall a good GK. I felt the defence left holes in the last couple of seasons (possibly with some not-100% commited players or slightly too-old players, perhaps). With Kos and Squillaci, these holes will hopefully be plugged (and let's hope that Clichy can maintain his concentration throughout the game). We'll be fine. I have a strong feeling that Wenger will be vindicated this season with a trophy or two. So let's not be divided over this GK nonsense and give our support to Wenger and the team!

it is nice to see chamak and the two other defender joining Arsenal this season and we hope that our defenders will keep focus in every match and allow the goalkeeper do less, it will favor us well to see them standing in for the goalkeeper,I also think ARSENE should be using Ebue in the right full back because of his pase and running abuility.

As for fabianski, frankly i would much rather see manone in goal. I know he only played like 7 or 8 games last season in the epl but he looked a more solid the fabianski

Good article.
I agree about the goalkeeping situation, that Almunia is the obvious number 1 for the time being. I would like to see Szczesny given a chance, perhaps in the league cup, to see if he is ready to make the gloves his own, but it probably won't happen this year. I just hope Wenger doesn't let Fabianski stand in the way of a legitimate prospect in Szczesny and maybe Mannone.

Good post, David. I'm fairly satisfied with Wenger's moves because- as you alluded to, most of Arsenal's needs (CB, striker, GK) were satisfied by deals made in the off-season. I especially like the acquisition of Squillaci, whom I think is a physical CB the likes of which Arsenal hasn't really seen since Campbell was at his peak. It'll be interesting to see how Squillaci fits into Wenger's plans when Arsenal plays against more physical front lines like Chelsea. Goalkeeper is still a weakness, but being periodically unsettled by talk of getting replaced is part of the game. If Almunia can't take it, he should have never gotten into professional sports.
Keep up the good work, David!

"The next few months will be a real test for him but dealing with this sort of pressure ought to be what footballers are paid thousands of pounds a week for"
yaaaaaaawwwwnnnn.
so tired of hearing how money is supposed to be the panecea for all things where pressure or stress are concerned.
it is a simpleminded tabloid argument, designed purely to rile those people who don't pull in huge paychecks..
i can guarantee that money is not what these players are thinking about when dealing with their very particular sport-related pressures.
as for walcott criticism, some of it, plenty of it went too far for a 20-year old who consistently suffered major injuries from day ONE. how is it justified to criticise a player that young for inconsistency, when all consistency was taken away by injury and competition in the arsenal squad???
all one SHOULD expect from a player that age is flashes of brilliance... and on that score he delivered.
people will slate him this year if he doesn't hit 30 ffs!

i think almuina is an top keeper.its jus he need more confidence.he came as 1st choice whn he was nearly 30.so he must b given some more time to prove himself.along with him wenger has 2 put vito in front.he is a good keeper.he was given chance 2 prove himself last season (whn almunia ws out of action) n he did some world class saves in epl as well as champions league.he is a young keeper n may b the future of arsenal as well.
along with keeper arsenal must hav a gud defence.their defence is poor n the keeper always hav 2 react quiteoften where as in chelsea and manu keeper react rarely as their defence is solid

And come January transfer window wenger will tell everyone there is no goalkeeper that will qualify for Champions-league.

This was a good article. As much as we all desired for Wenger to bring in a new goal keeper we have to be satisfied with new boys we got. We know Chamak has class and Kos is just a few steps away from fitting in, besides if he doesn't Squillaci is a beast (or was in spanish football).
Now as for mr. almunia...here is the thing. As a player we all know that unless we have Ronaldo like qualities, our positions aren't set in stone. So hearing of someone being brought in will unsettle anyone. But the fact that no one has come will make Almunia play ten times better because he know for sure that his job is on the line and any slip ups will be his head. Who knows maybe the great Arsene Wenger was just playing mind/motivational games. But i believe Almunia will be a beast.
 |
Posted by Anonymous on 09/02/2010
We have defensive liabilities, no doubt. But the biggest criticism most have of Almunia is precisely his inability to organize the defense. Great goalkeepers command their boxes, and Almunia certainly does not do that. (This of course leads to him having to fight his own defenders and flail at areal balls.)

Why didn't Arsene sell Cesc (since he wanted to leave so bad) and buy Rafael Van Der Vaart and Stekelenburg instead?Raf VDV sold for $11 Milion and Stekelenburg is definitely a top rated GK and his performance in the WC is testimony for that...

I agree with JoeUSA. Age shouldn't be a factor in deciding whether Fabianski plays ahead of Mannone and Szczesny. Let's suppose Fabianski does really well in training, and therefore Wenger regularly selects him as the 2nd choice 'keeper. However, he has had his chances and failed to take them spectacularly (at Wigan last season anyone?). So, i think it is high time to give the younger 'keepers a chance. As much as a risk as this might seem, Fabianski is not much safer an option in my honest opinion.
In terms of transfers, I think Wenger has done good business this summer. Another 'keeper would be exciting but I'm happy the way it is now.

why everyone seem to bother about goalkeeper??? the way arsenal play football (attacking)will leave the defense expose as we see against Blackburn. it's nothing to do with keeper if you focus on attack for the whole 90 plus minutes. why everyone seem so sure that Schwarzer is so top top class, is he really better that almunia??? almunia have save us on so many occasion (eg;penalty save against West Ham last season. you all have been confused by the media that hype thing around (eg; when Dudu dive again celtic, even we lead them with 3 goals margin if i not mistaken, they(media) do the witch-hunt toward him, while THIS ENGLISHMAN DEFOE DID THE HANDBALL THING, NOT SINGLE MEDIA TRY TO MENTION IT. The conclusion is, YOU ALL HAS BEEN DRAWN INTO MEDIA FRENZY, JUST FOLLOW WHAT THEY SAID AND I DARE SAY MOST OF YOU JUST DON'T HAVE ANY EXPERIENCE REGARDING HOW THE FOOTBALL TEAM SHOULD BE RUN.

Not hailing from the UK I was not born to a team, but adopted the gunners as I love football. That being said, I have a keen sense of schadenfreude going into this season as Wenger just doesn't get it. Having a fiscally resp approach to club mgmt means nothing to this supporter. Competing for trophies is what I value, and this squad once again will not. Same old story - how can you defend no new keepers given that Shay is pining away at City and we are saddled with subpar talent in such a crucial role?? Chamakh may turn into an effective striker, but that remains to be seen. RVP is hurt again - surprise, surprise! Bentner is not the answer...there is no depth after the first 11 and we still lack directness (will walcott continue playing like he's finally figured out how to reign in his pace and play football??). The past point is that Arsenal have money to spend, but Wenger refuses to spend it. Villa, David Silva, Ya Ya Toure, Ozil, there is talent to be had. Wenger tires me..

David nice piece as usual but what do you think about Van Persie who cannot seem to be fit for a whole season?
 |
Posted by james on 09/02/2010
In my opinion, I think if fabianski went on loan and the two youngsters fought for the second keeper spot, then we would be all set for the season. Fabianski would get much needed experience, while mannone and szczesny can do carling cup and maybe even FA cup depending on who we are playing. As for almunia, he is not nearly as bad as people think. Personally I think the problem with our defense over the years is that we lacked a true leader, which vermaelen is becoming. Instead we had gallas go around thinking he was the king, and instead of leading the team, he actually was the cause of unrest. He did it at arsenal and with france this summer. Good luck to spurs to keep him quiet, which wont happen.
I have seen squillaci play live, and he is quite impressive. I cant wait to see him play. As for kos, he just needs to bulk up a bit, while we cant forget bout djourou who is a beast of a defender at 6' 4" when fit. Overall we lost gallas, but in return gained 3 more willing defenders.
 |
Posted by Temitayo Abiodun on 09/02/2010
Arsenal's goalkeeping problem is grossly overhyped. We lose because we waste chances not because the goalkeeper makes mistakes. Almunia doesn't commit a blunder in every game, the question is can we bury three chances per game, we definitely create enough. If I have to replace a player, I will replace Bendtner not Almunia. Of course a better goalkeeper is a nice to have
 |
Posted by RJ on 09/02/2010
We have to bear Almunia for another 6 months! I don't understand why he should be captain when Febragas is not playing. Captaincy should be given to Vanmalen or Arshavin or RvP after Febregas.

Almuni's only an avg GK but the real problem is that our style of play & personnel create too many Chances opportunities for the opponents to put pressure on our GK
AW's best teams featured 2 strong CBs (Adams,Keown, Campbell) and 2 strong DMs (Viera Petit, Gilberto) - usually one pure DM and one lying deep to start the offense and assist on defense That setup allowed us to cope w/ long balls & set pieces and ensured enuff balance that we limited attempts on our goal & were rarely caught on the break (even when the FBs pushed up the field).
Now we usually play w/ 1 CF 2 small wingers, 2 smallish AMFs and and 2 "attack-minded" FBs. Only Song and fits the bill as a useful DM and we pair him with ons strong CB and one lightweight inexperienced CB. Is it any wonder we allow a lot of wuality shots on goal and look shaky on balls lobbed into the box?
I'm not a big Almunia fan but any GK would struggle to look world class in this Arsenal side given it's lack of defensive quality
 |
Posted by Nick G on 09/02/2010
Agreed that I think it's good to see how Almunia does between now and January. I don't think Schwarzer would have been worth it, and clearly every club knows Arsenal need a GK and try to inflate their asking prices. No surprise that thrifty Wenger refuses to get ripped off.
Almunia is a world-class keeper when he's focused and confident. Shay Given was never a real option, and frankly, as much as I think he's one of the EPLs best GKs, Given also needs strong CBs in front of him and has similar weaknesses to Almunia during confusing or 1on1 situations. Wenger did well to pick up 2 experienced CBs.
If necessary, I hope in January that they search for a GK sooner than later in the xfer window. Give Almunia a month to show if he's fired up (agreed that I think he will push hard this yr) and if he's not, throw Szczesny into the machine
 |
Posted by JohnB on 09/02/2010
You don't understand the goalkeeping situation. The whole reason for wanting Schwarzer was to give Szczęsny time to develop while having a top quality goalkeeper between the sticks. As to his age, can you spell VAN DER SAAR who was brought by Man U when he was close to the same age. Shall we say he wasn't a top quality goalkeeper because he played for Ajax and Fulham?
 |
Posted by JoeGunnarlson on 09/02/2010
Almunia is not a first class 'keeper by any means but he is not as bad as some of us make him out to be. The problem over the years has been with our backline. Any 'keeper who doesn't feel protected is bound to suffer from jitters, which brings into focus how good Seaman was, blah, blah, blah. Seaman had the like of Tony Adams, Lee Dixon, Nigel Winterburn, Martin Keown and Patrick Vieira to protect him so he was bound to feel confident. If he had some good saves on the few times he was called upon, that doesn't make him a great Keeper. Almunia would have excelled with that defensive line up and the steel of Vieira. With our current back four, Almunia looked more confident, even against Blackburn. He will be good this season.
 |
Posted by Michael on 09/02/2010
I might be a tad bias as an Australian, but Schwarzer is a great keeper, my only reservation about signing him was his age. He is far superior to Almunia and was a major reason for Fulham doing so well (by their standards) last year. Squillaci is a good signing, he has a reputation as someone who likes to mix it up physically which is definitely what we need and is good in the air. He isn't the quickest around but we have speed at the back to cover that. Koscielny hasn't impressed me so far though. Getting totally out-muscled by, of all people, El Hadj Diouf on the weekend was not encouraging and he generally looks very unsure. He seems slightly built for a centre-half, which in the Premier League can cost you big time. I know the player's technique & ability on the ball are something Wenger rightly looks for, but I think our whole team is so proficient on that level that a less technically gifted but more physical centre-half would have been a better option (Mertesaker anyone?)

Dear David, your article displays your concern as a die-hard Arsenal fan but does little good to instill faith amongst us fans, instead encouraging so many comments with criticism aimed at AW. Lets not forget that he's the best thing that has ever happened to Arsenal F.C.
I myself wanted him to buy a GK, having seen the horror show enacted by Fabianski last season. Agreed there's a bit of disappointment considering that Almunia's probably not amongst the best keepers in the world. But this should hardly be a reason to lose faith in him, AW or the rest of our squad.
I only hope that the collective feeling of calamity amongst the fans isn't because of the media cooking up articles or because of Man City and our less illustrious rivals from North London apparently "strengthening" their squads by buying new or famous players.
I completely agree with JL and strongly believe that we are going to be crowned Champions in May.
YES all you haters reading this, I mean it.

The way Arsene behaves favors our rivals. I am beginning to realize it's both Man-U and Chelsea fans that show up topless in our stadium carrying banners of "Arsene Knows" and "In Arsene we trust". Lets wake up Gooners and sack Wenger! I wouldn't be surprised if Man-C gets in on the action and send in their fans with a banner reading "Arsene our Saviour" after all we sold them some of our players and they are laughing us off as Suckers for even thinking of Shay Givens. After all said, it will be a good season because our younger players will come good for us this season. That is a given.

with the exodus of the geriatrics now... Almunia will feel old enough to bark at the defenders when they sleep off... Please someone tell me how he would have shouted at Gallas, Sol, and Sylvestre?? The young pole is the future of Arsenal goal keeping though. I saw him play some matches last season and I'ld more willingly put my buck on him than Vito Manone and Fabianski together. We need a keeper who can steal us an away point on a day the team plays crap. Scezcny looks like him.

This year arsenal transfers out more than transfer in. I suspect that the new kind of football transfer are slowly emerging in the Football business, where Players Weekly wages play an important part alot more than The transfer price itself.
Arsenal sure need a new goalie that can live to the Club's big reputation and to insist somekind of confidence at the back.
The new defenders signing is right on the money, especially latter on the season when injury starts kicking in. Great defenders signing so far.
We could use another striker with Van Persie 's injury prone and Bendtner's immaturity, how i wish we have cloned Bergkamp. He was the best.

Posted by Jay on 09/03/2010
Transfer wise, Arsene has done the essential. Let's face it, the Defence was the key issue with only 2 central defenders left (Verm n Djourou).
David, your comments about the GK are sound. who would u suggest as a replacement at a decent price? its clear that the GK budget is max 5million.
Wenger has realised that Almunia will be at best a no 2. I've never seen an Arsenal goalie beaten at his near post as often as he has (Ngog).
In fact, he seems to get lost at some point as to the whereabouts of his posts and although Seaman was relaxed like Almunia, he had Adams n Keown in front of him, who would protect him.
I'm not sure about Mannone but Szczesny seems to be a medium term strategy (2-3 yrs), who needs to make his way to no 2 first.
Confidence is key for a GK and it seems, he doesn't want to expose Szczesny to this pressure n risk. Else we could have another Manninger, who showed so much potential but who's disappeared afterwards.

Why is everybody blaming Clichy for the Diouf's goal when we had a CB (Verminator?) n a DMF that should have covered the space that d senior diouf came in through? Strikers are trained to be VERY deceptive in their movement, especially when they are running behind defenders! Noticed the error was corrected in the 2nd half cos Song always got back anytime Verm or Kos were dragged out wide. Good result at Ewood Park, at least we passed this physical test. UP GOONERS!

Well as for me, i think Arsenal realy needs a new man in the goal post....but since winger insist not to sell 1 out of the 4 for a replacement, lets see what he has in mind, because i bet you he will not sign a GK in jenuary.....

I'm not sure how good a buy koscielny is... blackburn's goal was caused by a real lack of effort/strength from him i thought. The way diouf just shrugged him off and outpaced him was despicable, especially since he's not really a big, powerful centreback but rather a small quick one, he really shouldn't be getting beaten for pace like that. His price tag was way overpriced for me atm...
There was talk of Akinfeev wanting to join arsenal, he would have been a great buy! Hopefully that can go through in Jan....

Arsene has always done it his way. Whether or not it's still the RIGHT way is debatable. It strikes me that over the past 2 seasons, just 10M or so spent on a 'stopgap' 'keeper or defender, or even a loan signing could have gotten us the league. But, as always, we place our faith in Arsene...

I agree , not to buy Mark Schwarzer. But was very disappointing not a get a goalie. Wojciech Szczęsny is a wonder kid and should have given the chance to improve at the first team level.
We needed few quality players in the centre half and also a strong lad to back up left back. Not a big fan of Laurent Koscielny with his physical appearance. we needed someone strong like Pape Malickou Diakhaté or Mamadou Sakho to stop big strikers like Drogba.. Well......
I still believe ( More of a hope ) we can win something this season but all odds are against Arsenal.
Wenger has to take the blame if he stuffs up this season. And I still dont know how he gets away after 5 years of No trophies at the level of Arsenal .
Finally, one thing is for sure. There will be no stopping of Cesc going to Barca if we dont win anything this season. I wont blame him. What's the point of staying at a club, if the club does not meet his winning desires and ambitions

From reading the first few comments i couldn't why arsenal fans are disappointed with Wenger trying to land Schwarzer. He would have surely served your team better than Almunia but more importantly the plan was for him to coach the 3 younger goalkeepers and unlock their true potential. He could played for two or three years and by that time one of those youngsters would have been ready to step up. Would have been a really good bit of business.

Fabianski should have been sold, then Given tempted with a very solid offer to provide competition for Almunia (who is not really bad enough to be sold),then Mannone and Szczeny kept for Carling,FA Cup and weak opponent matches or where we have qualified for next round.Kos and Squillaci are OK buys though i would have wanted a tall, black and rugged defender to pair Vermaleen.I have seen Chamakh, and am a little bit disappointed. Not strong enough and doesnt take shots.Well, lets see...

First Let's Give Mr. Wenger a Break. As a Club we are on sound footing financially. As an Arsenal Supporter, I believe we've got a real chance of winning the PL this season. Almunia is a descent keeper and I think all the team has to do now is give him a lot more protection (CB's and DM).
We have to encourage and stir up our players. I beleive strongly that come May Next Year, we will be celebrating with the PL Title and all the skeptics will be eating their Humble Pie.
Come On Arsenal!!! Come On Gunners!!! You Can Do It.

From reading some of the comments stating AW being the greatest manager for Arsenal, winning 3 league titles in how many years? and yet he's still around by trying to blame on everyone but himself. its true that some of his buys were unexpectedly great (henry, petit, cesc, campbell) but even then just 3 league titles with all these players he had over the years was abysmal. considering the reputation and the size of AFC, even if he wins this year his ratio of winning titles to the period as a manager still will be unimpressive, only because how he tries to make himself bigger or better than he actually is.

No supporter wants the club he/ she loves to be ruined financially, but wenger has taken things to the extreme. Even i wonder whether he is blinded by vanity.
Arsenal won trophies when having world class players not when half of the team have average players.
I am tired of hearing Wenger's remarks on young team ,unity, mental toughness,etc...

GK and defence are the weakest link in the arsenal team (with all the due respect), they let in goals where we least expected. If we are on a counter and the opponents re-counter we always hold our breath, let's hope Kos and Squillachi fit in quickly like Verminator. We didn't buy a GK so Wenger, Szczesny needs to be given a chance and Manone be second because he (Manone) did well last season when he deputised for Almunia and Fabianski when they were injured. A tight defence will bring trophies to the Gunners.
One love Arsenal.............

That is how you know a great team, it is not supposed to be built around one or two individuals. Whatever happens, i am still a true gunner.

what a shame to wenger and Almunia, having been given all the chances Almunia has failed to rise to the occasion. it's no wonder that Mourinho says Arsenal can't win any trophy esspecially Champions league. For sure Wenger will leave Arsenal without winning the Champions league despite of the financial status of the Club and the number of years he's spent as a coach.

Well said guys. Yes we needed a goal minder during the transfer window but not now, lets all rally behind what we got at the moment, the more we shout we need a new keeper, the more we are destroying the average we got. With all the criticism. by January when the tranfer window re-opens, we will be out of the title race cos of continued pressure and lack of self believe we exert on Manuel. Until January, let them proove us wrong.
In the EPL, goal keepers are made strong by a strong backline. Only Iker in this world can win matches without a solid defence.... Depth, we got some when looking at what we have at the moment. All the 1st team players are well covered and know that a slight mistake the shirt is gone.
All the best gunners, the best team in the EPL.

I feel that when almunia is given a challenge, he can play decent stuff . I remember that he was rhe guy who had knocked out Jens lehmann out of no 1 choice, a goalkeeper who was germany's no 1 at the time. We have to support him and give him confidence if we continue criticizing him there are bound to be many msistakes made because he will be distracted.wenger should still buy a keeper like david de gea, not of his current ability but with similar potential so he can provide competition for almunia as mannone and fabianski do not seem capable of doing so. Mannone looks promising so he could be one for the future.

ok first of all to all the wenger bashers go get a life! this man has arsenal playing the best football to watch in any league in the world for umpteen years now he has discovered and delivered more football talent to the game of football than almost any other coash in the world, he has arsenal club in a better financial postion than most other clubs in the world, which in trun means many added benifits to all the club members and ticket holders.
yes the club can do with a trophy but that will come in time in the meantime sit back and enjoy the beautiful game being played by one of the best teams in the world.
as for this current crop of players, to be honest i think this is the year that they will truly deliver if they can stay relatively injury free. this is the first season that robin has gone down early and i dont think anyone is paniking because the team has good cover.

As 4 me we only need a striker, (a hungry 4 goal striker) that will utilize the cooked-goal chances we make in the 18yard box. As 4 a GK, an average aged GK is better than all this 30someting yrs old that would only last one or two seasons and then we'll be looking 4 a GK again. All our critics espcially MU fans should mind their bizness and face their scandalous striker constantly found in hooker joints; we dont patronise hookers, we play beautiful football... Ha! Ha!! 1) We can not use the same playing approach against every team week in & week out without any variation. Otherwise we will be too predictable for opponent...
2) It's OK to play ugly oocasionally but collect 3 points in the end(i.e. soak & strike with counter attack & denied opponent space & time) especially against very strong opponents like Chelsea, Man Utd & Bacelona...with 5-4-1 format & win (or at least a draw) & then back to our usual playing style for the rest of opponents.
3) Man C beat Chelsea with 7 players defending goal when opponent attack, Barcelona KO by JOSE'S INTER last year for the same reason & BARCA did not win on this week UEFA Champion league game for the same reason etc...
4) We probably already the BPL champion in last few years if we denied points to our biggest rivals Chelsea & MU.
5 ) We still can win BPL if we did not lose to MU & Chelsea because we are far more consistent than them when playing against weaker teams.
WBA is a pure accident...

Congratulation to Wenger's NEW 5-4-1 FLEXI MODEL which yield handsome result against strong opponent like Man City. NOT JUST WE SCORE 3-0, WE ALSO DID NOT CONCEDED ANY GOAL.
May be we can adopt to this model to handle future stronger opponent like Man U, Chelsea & Barcelona in future fixture....
This model seems to be even more uniquely suitable for Arsenal & even potent than the GERMAN WORLD CUP 4-2-3-1 sudden attack model which destroyed England during 2010 world cup.
Our defensive deficiency seems to be able to properly tidy up in the nick of time... whenever our opponent striker finally manage to break through...there is always at least one of our defender able to rush ther in time to clear danger....
AS LONG AS WE DON'T ALLOW OUR STRONG OPPONENT ANY CHANCE TO SCORE; WE WILL NEVER LOSE OR PROVIDE THE VALUABLE POINTS THEY NEED TO STEER AWAY FROM US IN BPL or any championship. ALSO HIGHER CHANCE TO SCORE MORE THAN 1 GOAL AGAINST THEM..Hail Mr. Wenger's new success model.

Johan Djourou deserve much more 1st team appearance. He can handle more physical teams better. So long as he put more emphasis in SPEED to CLEAR DANGER DECISIVELY & not over emphasize in BALL CONTROL, he is a VERY SAFE DEFENDER...
Laurent Koscielny really need to improve his physical fitness & be more robust because english gameS is very physical.
Sebastien Squillac is a very reliable defender & very good signing.
Nicklas Bendtner has what it take to become another Kolo Toure or John Terry. He can become a very commanding & imposing central half. I am very happy if he really becaming one of defensive superstar, not sure if he is willing to change just like Kola Toure who first started as an attacker for Arsenal.... He can be very useful in corner kick situation.
The sesson is long & injuring of key central defender tend to happy. We need to develop star in our central defensive role before injury strike us... Central defenders issue/project has not completed yet......

1) Johan Djourou deserve more first team slot more than Laurent Koscielny for sure. If not because of him the final score with fulham could be 2-2. Johan Djourou ability to deal with high ball clearance & solid physical present is exactly what Laurent Koscielny is lacking. It is very dangerous to play Laurent Koscielny against Man U or Chelsea as he is the weakest link in Arsenal's defence.
2) Arsenal need to score at least 3 goals in order to ensure they collect 3 points as the central defence is the weak link.
3) Put in prospective, Arsenal players must hv the mentality & target to score 3 goals if possible by 1st half (if not score 3rd goal before 60 minutes of 2nd half to ensure 3 points); then Spur nightmare will not be repeated.
4) Song & Jack Wilshere need to have the mentality to ensure defence is solid before they more up to attack. It does not make sense to take the risk to score 1 goal & let in 2 goals. Defensive midfielders shd not forget their main roles.

1)It's my mistake for not pointing out to GUNNER they must prevent Nani from crossing the ball from wide position. (30% of MU goal are from his cross).
2) There is element of LUCK in PARK'S Goal. Nothing to boost about...
3) We only lost a game & not the entire season. Both MU & Chelsea will loss point too. This season is still very wide open for everybody...
4) The darkest hour that Chelsea is experiencing now will haunt MU sooner or later... Just concentrate in our next game; look at one game at a time.
5) MUST SET A TEAM CONSENSUS TARGET OF SECURING 3 POINT IN WITHIN 65 MINUTES IN EVERY GAME BY SCORING 3 GOALS. THE WHOLE TEAM MUST SET A TEAM TARGET IN THE WHOLE OF 90 MINUTES -> BY HOW MANY MINUTES; THEY MUST ACHIEVE CERTAIN TARGETED RESULT SO THAT THE URGENCY & WINNING METALITY YIELD INTO RESULT & POINTS TO WIN BPL.
6)It is a crime to leave thing to chance without target & hope for the best during game. DON'T WASTE PRECIOUS TIME; TRY TO MAKE EVERY MINUTE COUNT.

About
Sam Limbert: My retirement as a football player came at the age of 14 due to being rubbish, it's fair to say I was more Kaba Diawara than Thierry Henry, so I turned my focus to writing about the game. I'm a lifelong Arsenal fan and have been lucky enough to watch the team across England and Europe. My favourite Gunner of all time is Dennis Bergkamp, and the 2004 Invincibles is the greatest side I've ever seen in English football. I try to be positive about the Arsenal as it's the hope that keeps us going! Follow me on twitter @SamsMatchReport.
