Arsenal continued their impressive start to the season with a convincing 4-1 victory over Bolton at Ashburton Grove on Saturday. Rather like the win up a Blackburn a couple of weeks ago, it was a performance that suggested that Arsene Wenger's charges are becoming more mature.
The Gunners took a while to get into their stride despite holding the lion’s share of possession throughout the opening period. During the first half Tomas Rosicky impressed the most. The Czech made numerous penetrating runs and picked out some fantastic passes - most notably the one that put Andrey Arshavin through for a glorious one-on-one opportunity. He also still found time to track back and cover his defensive duties.

Finally injury-free and with a full summer of rest behind him, Rosicky has made an encouraging start to the season. During his time at Arsenal, we have only seen flashes of what he is capable of in between his frequent injury lay-offs. However, his contribution so far this term has not gone unnoticed either by his fellow players and the Arsenal supporters and maybe, given a run of full-fitness, he can finally deliver on the reputation he came to the club with and the potential he undoubtedly has.
With Laurent Koscielny playing the role of both saint and sinner in the first period - bundling home the Gunners opening goal but then presenting Bolton with their equalising opportunity when dropping a header back to Manuel Almunia well short of the mark - matters remained delicately poised at the break. Arsenal were taking time to shift into a higher gear but, on balance of chances, should have been comfortably ahead at the interval. Andrey Arshavin in particular really ought to have been on the score-sheet but was deprived on three occasions by a combination of good goalkeeping and desperate defending from the visitors.
A second goal was needed, and on the hour it finally came when Cesc Fabregas found his way to the by-line and hung up a cross that Marouane Chamakh thundered home with his head. For footballing traditionalists, there are few better sights than seeing a big centre-forward rise up and score in this manner and it is great to see the Moroccan is beginning to provide the Gunners a meaningful aerial threat up front.
The main talking point of the match though - at least from Bolton’s perspective - was the sending off of Gary Cahill. Seen in real time and in the stadium, it has to be said that it didn’t look anything more than a bookable challenge and, in the moments before the referee brandished the red card, the home support were more aggrieved at Andrey Arshavin being deprived of the advantage and a run on goal provided by Chamakh’s back-heel. At that point in the match, Arsenal needed a third goal more than they needed Bolton down to ten men.
Any shreds of sympathy for Cahill though were lost in the sense that if he hadn’t gone then at least one or two of the other Bolton players ought to have been dismissed. Kevin Davies should have considered himself very lucky to have still been on the pitch at the time of Cahill’s exit. He was booked for a first-half tackle on Jack Wilshere that was worse than Cahill’s challenge on Chamakh and got off scot-free after playing the man rather than the ball during an aerial clash with Koscielny. From where I was sitting, it was difficult to see the detail of Paul Robinson’s second-half challenge on Abou Diaby - which was probably just as well because TV replays showed it to be the sort potential leg-breaking challenge that makes you wince. Diaby's reaction to the tackle really said it all.
Bolton under Owen Coyle are not as brutal as Bolton under Sam Allardyce but Coyle still makes plenty of use of the physical attributes of his players - with Davies being the most obvious example. What was most pleasing though from the Arsenal perspective was that instead of “playing the victim” or allowing themselves to be intimidated by Wanderers’ approach, when the challenges came in, the Gunners simply got on with their game. They refused to be bullied or derailed and that is definitely a (long-overdue) sign of development in this team. It is high time this Arsenal team shook off their reputation for being vulnerable to rough-house tactics.
Did the red card turn the game? Not really. Arsenal were already 2-1 ahead and pushing hard for a third. As the match entered its final phase the home team finally hit full-throttle. Alex Song made the game safe with a deft finish after a nice move and Carlos Vela put the icing on the cake crowning a 24-pass with a confident strike to make it 4-1.
The Gunners had got better and better as the afternoon wore on and this was perfectly exemplified in the performance of Cesc Fabregas. The Spaniard looks to be reaching full fitness again after his exertions of the summer and he made a real impact on Saturday, becoming more influential as the minutes ticked by. He was involved in all four goals, providing the assists for three of them, and was in the thick of everything good that Arsenal produced. By his own admission in his programme notes, he played badly at Blackburn but the small minority of supporters who thought that his heart wasn’t in it at Arsenal this season really have got it wrong.
So, another performance to be pleased with not least because of the way the Gunners dealt with the style of the opposition’s approach. No doubt arguments about the sending off will continue to rage but let that not distract us from the fact that not only did the Gunners score four but also created enough chances to have doubled the winning margin. They stood up to their visitors, contended with some atrocious refereeing decisions and still managed to turn on the style.
Are we starting to see the dawn of a team that withstand the physical rigours of the Premier League as well as being able to produce champagne football? Time will only tell.

"Are we starting to see the dawn of a team that withstand the physical rigours of the Premier League as well as being able to produce champagne football?" Yes we are!
Promises have no value unless they are fulfilled. The time is here when the promise will be fulfilled. Beautiful football is about to deliver trophies and money as well.

I for one was quite impressed by the Gunners resiliency this weekend. However, I have been unimpressed by the play of Arshavin this year not only because of his poor finishing, but also in the fact that he is constantly in an offside position. I believe he was guilty of this at least 4 times on Saturday. Rosicky has been brilliant all season and needs to still be handled with care based on his history. I agree that Davies should have been sent off even before the Cahill incident. I thought it was abookable offence, but not a straight red. Robinson's challenge on Diaby however, was a red card offence. No attempt on the ball and could have broken his leg as well. The EPL is the greatest league in the world IMHO, but , it must take a stand on teams that play with only one intention..."thug football". That type of play is reserved for amateur teams in a backyard brawl game.

Yup a fantastic win considering the key players that are out, and more importantly, this victory has served to gear us up for the upcoming Champions League tie which i deem to be very very tricky despite homeground advantage.
Very glad that u didn't miss out on the noteworthy performances from Rosicky. I've always been a huge fan of him, and i'm sure he can live up to his reputation as long as injuries are outta his way this season. Such a vital player he is and moreover, he adds experience to the team.
With Nasri back as well, things are looking good although i believe every genuine gooner did feel a lil' letdown when news of RVP and Walcott to be out for 6 weeks were disseminated.
Nevertheless at home to bolton, this is the kind of result i'm expecting from a team who has been playing together for some time. Next up Braga at home, before another tough away game to Sunderland. What's important is to keep within touching distance to Chelsea as our key players recover well and fast.

Nice write up yet again. Bolton, in my view, are still suffering from the inadequacies of Allardyce though Cole has tried to change their playing style and over reliance on physicality. Kevin Davies will never rise above his medoicre level. I also believe that the ref. did not red card the Bolton player for that atrocious tackle on Diaby most probably to compensate for his error on Gary Cahil. In summary Dave, do you have any update on the Diaby injury situation?

I hope we can become more clinical in front of goal. Arshavin should have won this game for the home side in the first 30 minutes. Arsenal can't expect a hatful of scoring chances against better teams. I completely agree about Rosicky - I though he was Man of the Match against Blackpool. Song was very poor v Bolton - won several tackles, but his passing accuracy was terrible. Wenger seems sure that "collective" and "pressurizing" defence can win balls in midfield, and prefers "creatives" to drafting in a stern ball-winning midfield "destroyer". I remain unconvinced, and would prefer better cover immediately in front of our central defenders, especially since our wide players are so often on attack. Clearly high balls are going to be an adventure for the CBs and GK all season, but I guess that hasn't much changed from seasons past. Anyhow, a bright start to a promising season - and David you're right, somehow this year feels different from those that have gone before. Here's hoping ..

great game to watch, was on edge off my seat the entire time. nice review. although didn't think Rosicky was as good in this game as others this season. His through ball to AA was insanely good, but felt like he was more of a passenger in this game. I guess as Cesc was runnig the show Ros couldn't have as much effect on the game. Braga game should be great to watch. We do seem tougher this year and also look like we've learnt to cope with having lots of injuries. good squad depth.

Excellent summary again David.
I think also worth mention was that Squillaci looked very good at the back and it says something that Bolton chose to challenge Koscielny with the long balls to Davies. Who do you think the 1st choice pairing will be? Many people forget Djourou has made 30 appearances in a season twice. It finally seems there is choice at the back four. Vermaelen would be the first name on the sheet for me. I think I'll need another month or so to decide on his partner though.

It is yet another season again and this time around we need not to only play good soccer but to win all matchies and i know we are capable of doing so,but least i forget to talk about Asene Wenger, please let our young team know that we the fans of ARSENAL are tired of going trophyless for the past years, and so therefore they should know that this season we count our draws as our loss,Asene should convince Cesc not to live for if he decide to live at this time it will not favour him.

Good article my view of the sending off was not so much for the offense but the collective nature of previous offenses made by the team.i think the referee had enough so gave a red card no matter what the tackle was like and i agree Diaby tackle warranted some sort of a card probable yellow but the referee found himself under pressure from giving the red only moments before so took the easy option and gave nothing. The arsenal defense still looks shaky i know there were players missing but the same problems from last season have not disappeared they still look great going forward but suspect on the break will not really find out till they meet teams like Chelsea who will absorb the pressure and then counter attack.

i am sorry while i really like thomas i still think this was all about team effort so with that i look for what in the team was different and to me that would definetly fall onto the way we are defending gibbs deserves an extended run in the squad i just think right now he is more on his game than clitchy i also was quite impressed with the two new cbs even though one did make that bad error.
personally i think our midfield as an attacking force is really in fine shape i am worried about it slightly from a defensive point of view but so long as we can keep putting the ball in the back of the net then i think we are in great shape.
i cant wait for wednesday if nasri and fabregas are both going to start it is very interesting to see who will end up on the bench
GOONER FOR LIFE!!!!!!

We need to do something with the attacking line,we cant just sit down and watch many of our chances slip away, because if care is not taking it will have a negative effect when the big team is played.

"but the small minority of supporters who thought that his heart wasn’t in it at Arsenal this season really have got it wrong."
I strongly disagree. I think he will eventually get his head screwed on right, but I do think his poor play is directly related to his desire to go to Barca.
His passing was much improved against Bolton, but he still got caught in possession too easily to many times.

Clichy and Sagna have time to rest as fielded in Eboue and Gibbs, is a good sign for Champion League on Wed. How about the players of Arsenal 'main frame' - Vermaelen/Song/Fabregas/Van Persie?
Time to search for more top players in Jan ( specially the rear and the front)

Great write-up David. Agree totally.
One thing I would like to say is that I am NOT upset with Arshavin. He is making the right runs and most of his crosses and set-up balls have been great, even when no one was at the other end. He's been very involved in every match so far and it's only a matter of time before he hits his form and starts racking up the goals and assist
Also, A few close offside calls can have a very disruptive effect on an opposing defense, especially in combination with the clear breaks that were happening. It can make a defense either panic and start moving their line back a bit, allowing for the gunners to pursue more 25 pass build up goals, or it can cause a defense to think they can do no wrong and push the line forward allowing for Cesc and Rosicky to create chances with brilliant through balls. In either case, it will cause unrest amongst a defense and open things up.
Up to the gunners! If the back line can get on the same page, silverware will come.

Trint, the coupling of defenders may depend on the games sometimes. TV is more assured now with his tackling and pace but lacks in height. Squillaci is a solid tackler like TV, yet to see more of him. JD is strong and tall but yet to produce regularly. Koscielny has been composed so far with decent pace but still lack the strength in the English game.
The fact is we won with about half of last season's regular 1st team (eg. Alumnia, Song, Eboue, Fab, AA and Rosicky) speaks of a maturing team and actual depth in the bench. What we may need is better and unique tactics to overcome the opposition.

I'm SYAROS from MALAYSIA..A PROUD ARSENAL SUPPORTER since i was 12(now i'm 19..)but quite frustated with the end product that arsenal produced every single season which is NO TROPHIES!But this season i think an FA cup would be great..and even though THE GUNNERS has started brightly during the first four games of the season..i still believed that the lack in depth in our striking and defending department will become the undoing come the end of the season..but the display against bolton(albeit against 10 men dispirited one..)was absolutely great..squillaci looked solid even though he's playing against of one the toughest midfielders in bpl(Davies..)..but again..koscielny still lacks experience..but the real acid test..is whether arsenal can win against SUNDERLAND nxt week..and can they win when CAPTAIN FAB fabregas is out injured...but for now..cheers to THE GUNNERS!

It is great to see Arsenal beat these tough physical teams such as Bolton ad Blackburn. These last couple years the Gunners have lost or tied these games, and those lost points came back to haunt them at the end of the season. This year I see more toughness from the players, as I think the young players are finally maturing. I hope Vela gains confidence from his first premier league goal Saturday as he is now our first striker off the bench with the injuries to Van Persie and Bendtner. Now all we need is for Almunia to not mess up and we will be fighting for the title!

David, I must admit I was frustrated by Arshavin's missed chances in the game. But after some reflection, I see it as a positive that he was much more involved in the game than he has often been before. And that's a huge positive. If we can have Arshavin continuously involved in the game, he will win games for us.

The Gunners seem to growing up, I believe in collective effort and a team that has been together for a while - year or three. However, I still feel disturbed when we talk of the defensive midfield. We need hard tackles, great physic to mention a few past referees - Viera. Can we get a few of the big Germans (shepards) in those positions

Indeed, the 'doubting Thomases' of Arsenal and wengers philosophy are soon going to sleep. basing on Blackburn and Bolton's encounters, an impresive maturity, mental ability and improvement is enough to give Arsenal supporters a smile. The likes of Walcot, Diaby, Song, Sagna, and the Inclusion of Koscielyny and Schillacci says volumes to 2010/2011 Arsenal campaign. For Wilshere the sky is the limit....
Braga may not escape a half dozen goals

Good stuff. There is remarkable improvement in the spirit of the team, especially so when they were facing the rugby teams like Bolton and Blackburn. It augurs well for the team's confidence. There were wasted chances up front no doubt and the team still frustrate with their inability to convert clear opportunities with steely strikes, especially when they were overwhelming with good football. Like we all know good football may not be enough. The intent is to strike fear with opponents. There were times where flashes of discomfort at the back caused us problems. But we survived as the midfield controlled well. While these are ok against teams that have little football ideas, the danger is with good counter attacking and footballing teams. The defensive strength have not been tested. Soon, I think

It has started again for Arsenal, not being to win games as they should, while their opponents are scoring goals, they are struggling with even smaller teams to have a draw. i don't think with this way of playing, we can believe in the team. today for instance, song should have been replaced, looking at the way his was playing, you should know that he was going to get a seconf yellow card. And then he punishes his team mates by reducing them to ten. it is still time to wake up and do something better.

I am a fan of Arsenal all along as compared to great teams MU and Chelsea.
However, from the last 2 games played when they scored crucial goals at the very last minutes, and as I watched the games, my opinion is that there is a lack of URGENCY go score when the score is at 0-0. Most players are just happy to play and dribble the balls round and round and mostly not sharp or quick at their passes. thus the opponents were able to read the game. Gone are the days when I saw passes were made quicker rather than through dribblings.
When the balls are played too long than passing, players often misread when the balls would be passed to them and thus open the chances for mistakes that cause the opponents to make quick recovery and surprises. This also cause the defence to be caught off-guard
When the team loses by 2 or 3 goals, then they would cause them to be more URGENT and able to scored. this goes to show that if the gunners show more URGENCY at the start, they will do well

Sam Limbert: My retirement as a football player came at the age of 14 due to being rubbish, it's fair to say I was more Kaba Diawara than Thierry Henry, so I turned my focus to writing about the game. I'm a lifelong Arsenal fan and have been lucky enough to watch the team across England and Europe. My favourite Gunner of all time is Dennis Bergkamp, and the 2004 Invincibles is the greatest side I've ever seen in English football. I try to be positive about the Arsenal as it's the hope that keeps us going! Follow me on twitter @SamsMatchReport.
