Arsenal
Posted by David Young on 08/22/2010

Arsenal were expected to beat Blackpool easily at Ashburton Grove yesterday and they did just that. Racking up a 6-0 victory, it was a fine way to kick off their home campaign and was a critical early boost to their goal difference.

Theo Walcott was the star of the afternoon, notching the first hat-trick of his Arsenal career inside an hour. It crowned one of his more assertive displays for the club. The Seasiders couldn't live with his pace and a far more direct approach from the young winger reaped dividends. After the match, Arsene Wenger praised Walcott's decision-making in delivering his final ball. It was better, but there still is room for improvement. However, it was a performance that he can build on and the real test will be whether he can replicate producing this sort of threat week in, week out over the course of the season and against sterner opposition.

Walcott's, and Arsenal's, first goal settled any nerves but it was the second goal that ended the encounter as a contest. Ian Evatt was adjudged to have brought down Marouane Chamakh in the area and was given a red card for his trouble. Up stepped Andrey Arshavin to convert the penalty and from there the afternoon became one of damage limitation for Blackpool. And, in truth, reduced to ten men, six-nil was damage limitation. On another day, with sharper finishing, the Gunners might have hit a double-figure total against their beleaguered visitors as the match turned into something more akin to a training game than a top-flight fixture.

As the goals flew in, the match did become more about the Gunners’ goal difference column. With Chelsea winning their opening two games by a six-goal margin, the importance of punishing weaker opposition to the maximum cannot be over-stated. After such a dominant display, it would be churlish to pick holes in yesterday's performance but the only criticism that could be levelled was that the goal tally wasn't higher - because it really could (and maybe ought to) have been. Still, if you cannot be delighted after a six-nil home win then you are never going to be happy. It was a very pleasing afternoon.

Despite the satisfaction of a handsome victory, it has to be said that there had to be a measure of sympathy for Blackpool. After their stunning win at Wigan last week, this was a dose of cold and very harsh reality for Ian Holloway and his team. However, they acquitted themselves with honour and kept trying to play their game even though they were overwhelmingly outclassed. At no point did they resort to simply trying to kick Arsenal off the pitch as a defensive tactic. Their travelling support were also magnificent and though both players and fans will probably experience a few other days similarly tough days this season, there is no doubt that the attitude of everyone connected with the club is absolutely spot on and they will win a lot of friends this year.

So, at the end of the weekend, Arsenal stand second in the table after what has been a solid start. The next two games - against Blackburn away and Bolton at home - will tell us more about the true state of the team than yesterday's game did. We shall also see the likes of Cesc Fabregas and Robin Van Persie beginning their seasons in earnest. Though Theo Walcott took the plaudits yesterday, the loudest individual cheer of the afternoon came when Fabregas took the pitch as a 63rd minute substitute. The Spaniard looked a little rusty and short of full fitness but it was a wonderful sight to see him back in action for the Gunners after a summer of speculation about his future.

Elsewhere this week we have had our first real dose of injury news. It feels like Arsenal suffer more than most with injuries but they are part of the game and a key attribute of any team that wins title is the ability to weather the absences of key players - something the Gunners have not managed in recent seasons. Samir Nasri had to have surgery after taking a knock at Liverpool last weekend but the heartening news is though that he is only due to be out for a month, which is far from being a disaster.

Later in the week though, it was announced that Emmanuel Frimpong will be out for the remainder of the season after damaging ligaments in training. One has to feel desperately sorry for the boy. After an impressive pre-season, he looked to be on the brink of making a break-through into the first team and clearly featured in Arsene Wenger's plans.

Think for a moment of the years of hard work and effort that he has put in just to get himself the point where he is in contention for Arsenal‘s first-team squad. Now, instead of embarking on the most important and exciting season of his career so far, he faces nine months of uncertainty as he undergoes rehabilitation and has to live with the hope that, not only will he make a full recovery, but that his chance will come again. It must be heart-breaking for him. We can only wish him well and hope he returns better and stronger for the start of next season.

I was impressed with the boys against Blackpool but we shouldn't get carried away. I'm gutted for Frimpong, was hoping he was going to add depth to our Defensive Midfield department, which is very short of quality with on Song who can excell there. Diaby should never play there and Denilson should only play there against lower teams.

We must not be complacent with the weekend result. One week ago, we were also facing a 10-player opponents yet we failed to take the advantage despite we had a better line up then. The performance of Cesc and RVP was far from the expected levels. No new names are added to the squad with the closure of transfer window round the corner. In sum, gunners have a lot to be tested in the days to come.

Arsenal should not take any risk to call in not fully fit player, like Van Persie, otherwise, injury list won't be shortened. More potential players recruitment (like Squillaci )may be only option to solve injury issue.
I pick Rosicky is the man of match as he's generator behind Arsenal attack

I share your sentiments about Frimpong. He and Jack looked quite the formidable pairing in the pre-season.

Walcott's performance earned him most of the plaudits, but I felt Tomas Rosicky was the unsung hero of the match. His distribution and movement were excellent, and it is nice to see what he's capable of when coming into a season healthy and well-rested. It also takes some of the sting out of the Nasri injury.

If the reports on this site and elsewhere are true, it appears Sebastien Squillaci will be arriving to supplement our defensive corps. I wonder if he will simply be used as backup or if Wenger intends for him to partner Vermaelen while Koscielny gains experience via the domestic cup matches?

Good read and I agree with you that we should have had at least another 2-3 goals. The one worry that I still see is the gaps we leave open on the counter. It seems far to often we attack with utter force, control the ball for 10s of minutes, and then find ourselves tracking back for dear life due to some unimaginable counter from the opposing team. Obviously, Blackpool had extremely limited chances yesterday, but the few they did have, well any other team would have likely capitalized on one of them. Think if we'd been playing Chelsea or Man Utd...they'd take full advantage of all the open space we're giving. We need to have very strong, brute defenders to hold the fort while we attack left & right. Honestly, our offense is astounding & *knock on wood* we stay injury free, but the backline still worries me to no end. Add the fact our keeper is average at best and we've got another season with a recipe for trouble. Givens or Schwarzer must come, and thank god we've got Squillaci now...

I agree with you about the game and i hope this is Walcott time to come right. My doubts are around the fact that Blackpool's style of play suits Arsenal and you would expect them to do well. Its the type of game that we saw last season where teams pack the midfield and wait for the break which seemed to catch Arsenal out last year. Have they got a plan B to counter this i saw little against Liverpool only time will tell, it will be tested against Blackburn. Arsenal need to win and win well if they want to make a challenge for the title.

I think you summed up everything perfectly, but left out one important point. An honourable mention of Tomas Rosicky is a must after the first two games of the season. He played with such a devastating effect and such elegance yesterday that I am surprised there is no mention of him in your article. He is the reason we did not miss Nasri yesterday (given that Fabregas wasn't fully fit). He linked up with fellow midfielders and brought all of them into the game beautifully. I could see what we have missed the last two seasons, and I am just hoping he can stay fit and continue in this vein.

Very good display for the Gunners. However i will be very much pleased if Arsene Wenger brings in a nother defender and a goal keeper for more reinforcement. Thanks go Arsene and will look forward to taking of this Premiership this season.

Yeah!!! Mr.wenger hardwork if we are arsenal suporters we went to win the league this time hard work young gunners and i like wilshere theway his playing

For the neutral it would have been game over after the sending off and a 6-0 was a descent score. I would not complain neither. But with the magnificient opportunities created, it was such a craving to see more goals than the six scored. Many of the opportunities to "hammer" the opposition were simply wasted. But the positives were aplenty. Walcott's dominance, Arshavin's assertions, and Roscicky's inventions were encouraging. Walcott showed what he can do if he is put on a more direct position. The runs and turns reminded us of the legend Henry. He had improved on his decision making in the final third, but has much room for improvement. Chamakh's overall performance was encouraging. Although he missed some chances due to luck and positioning, he took at least one well. But most importantly, he was willing to defend and fight for the ball when the opposition had it. Something the rest of the team need to emulate. It was glimpse of the spirit we so long craved, that was most satisfying

i think it was a gd display by arsenal players but more work should be done on the midfield that is centre midfield because without song there might problem all the same credit must be given to the players

The Gunners are the better side.Arsenal have got the of young and experienced players and they have got some great attacking players as well. And the main thing is that they have got Wenger.

Posted by Peter on 08/23/2010

My man of d match was Rosicky, but what do we expect?we should b putting teams like blackpool to d sword. My worry comes when rugged teams like stoke come calling! We need a commanding presence between those posts, sign Schwarzer or Given now, before its too late!

Posted by chris on 08/23/2010

i wont be getting too exited about the result against blackpool as these type of results mean nothing without trophies. whenever arsenal have a scoreline like that wenger has a stupid grin on his face as if to say he was right not to bur in the tranfere market, and then follows up with how special the bond is with his young players. what bond is wenger on about anyway, most the young playes of five years ago have gone.
and whats with his latest exuse for not getting a new goal keeper, are arsenal fans really worried about unsettling almunia cos surely he cant play any worse then he already is. i can only see that as another c**p exuse on wengers behalf to try and justify not spending money on a new goalkeeper.

Posted by shankar on 08/24/2010

I feel that arsenal, need more depth in their squad. Almunia was not very impressing in his last 2 matches. I hope they sign a good goalkeeper, sum1 like given or akinfeev to boost their defence.

Posted by Maran on 08/24/2010

What is the situation with the goalkeeper? Any insider info? I think this is becoming a precarious situation provided the open and wide acknolwedgement of the inadequacies of the current keepers. The fact that Arsenal went hunting for a more reliable goalkeeper to take over No 1 means it would have affected the current lot adversely. Not that they were good to start with. But this makes the situation most vulnerable for Arsenal. There is not much choice left I suppose. David, is there any signs of business being done?

Posted by Kenny on 08/24/2010

It certainly was a brilliant outing after that drab opener against Liverpool. Despite Walcott's excellent match, he still seems to not have a solidified position and I just wonder whether he will be a player who can produce anywhere in the final third or will he only thrive in one position. Let's hope he continues his fine form for the whole season. Go Gunners!

I LOVE ARSENAL!!
WHATEVER THE RESULT.,
ARSENAL IN MY HEART....
WISHING FABREGAS CAN STAY NEXT SEASON......

Posted by Mbongo on 08/24/2010

this results was one off guys we should not think so early that EPL is going to be easier this time. Look at what happen to ManU at Fulham as an example. It is going to be tough even with teams you will not expect tough challenge, and one thing i would really all FANS and well wishers for Arsenal should be doing is to pressurize Arsenal team in particular Mr Wenger to reinforce that defence and midfield. We need another playmaker to deputise with Fabregas or when Fab is not available through injury then this person shoulder the work at the middle of pack. Look at how we missed this person in Liverpool game. Also in Blackpool game Alex Song was used as back four something is OK as an emergency but Arsenal has problem in defence, they need to sort it out quickly. Walcott did good three goals but he needs to be more calm and develop vision for goal and put passing in infront of a running striker. This season if you loose five good opportunities and score only one you get punished.

Posted by anthony on 08/24/2010

Thats the treatment for weaker teams.Like Chelsea so is Arsenal.BIG up GUNNERS.Like the others i too ask, what of the GK situation, is there any good news?David, do you think Fab is reved up for this campaign, to me is facial expression looked blank ,no joyfulness is seen as he pleyed last against B/pool.Maybe i am a bit too quick with my observation but did you see anything to that regard?

Posted by Femi on 08/25/2010

Rosicky is a key component right now. He shows urgency and takes risks. while others get the ball and turn circles with it he takes initiative. when Fabregas is fully fit, they have the possibility to do some SERIOUS damage.
Diaby NEEDS to go. He is a waste. Slows play down, bad decisions bad defender; he's just not an Arsenal style player.
Arshavin has not played well yet. He seems out of sorts.
In my opinion, Walcotts performance was what everyone had been waiting years for. Sure, he scored great goals and played very well, but I'm taking the performance with a grain of salt. Blackpools players are just not physically up to Walcotts level. When I see him replicate such a fantastic game against a solid consistent top half team regularly, I'll get very excited.
Chamakh is alright..... but his ball skills are poor. Before his goal, there were a few chances he didn't take or missed. He was bought to be aggressive in front of net, and I'm yet to see that. We need that from him.

Posted by chris on 08/25/2010

why is mr wenger spending nearly £8m on a 30 year old. aint 30 year olds at arsenal only worth a two year contract these days. that amount of money for someone who is only likly to be at arsenal for two years doesnt sound like money well spent to me, and its suprising really for someone who is supposed to be really stringent with money. why not spend an extra couple of million on one of those younger dutch or german defenders who will benefit the team for longer or even chris smalling would have been better, i hear fergie snapped him up for about £10m.
and lastly, is there anyone out there who still has faith in our current goalkeepers cos the only reason i can think of why they are still at arsenal is cos mr wenger is has a more then profesional relationship with them.

Posted by chukwudi Ekwuribe on 08/25/2010

Mr wenger go get a reliable goalkeeper and defender

Posted by shamz on 08/26/2010

I still needs to watch more Arsenal's game with strong team and this can indicate how much the key players do well on the field.
I see good performance on Rosicky, and Chamarkh. Flip flop performance on Arshavin...WHY???

Posted by jimmyGooner on 08/27/2010

i'm glad to see squaillacy sign for arsenal....
he will replace gallas.... but think arshavin had problem with his performance..he did'nt show his true football....wonderful debut for chamakh..i hope rvp, fabregas, arshavin and walcolt will be like galacticos.....

Posted by Goddy A Asen on 08/27/2010

I salute the wonderful display of the Gunners sofar and wish them well. Expectedly they should strive to improve their game more fabolously. Injury has always been their worst opponent year in and out. With an improved squad as this current one though they are out for REAL this season. Wonderful season for all Real Gunners for Life!

Posted by gun_club on 08/27/2010

1. No mention of Rosicky?
2. "Despite the satisfaction of a handsome victory, it has to be said that there had to be a measure of sympathy for Blackpool"
That's as sloppy as Chmarkh's finishing.

Posted by 4evrared on 08/28/2010

I still can't get over the fact that Walcott didn't go to the world cup, having combined so well with rooney and others in qualifying? can't remember why. injury maybe? i;m an man utd fan, but boy, theo can really play...what was capello thinking?
