Arsenal

After a World Cup that will be better remembered for the achievements of the organisers than by the performances of the players who participated in it, we can finally begin to look forward again to the new domestic season. Arsenal began their preparations today with their now-traditional leg-stretch and pipe-opener at Barnet.

On a sunny afternoon, where North London meets Hertfordshire, Arsene Wenger gave pretty much everyone who wasn’t involved in the World Cup a run out. The most notable absentee who didn’t spend the summer in South Africa was Eduardo and there were whispers around the stadium of a possible imminent deal that would see him leave Arsenal for Shakhtar Donetsk.

Barnet's Underhill Stadium ©PA Photos

As you might expect from the very first pre-season outing, the game itself was nothing to write home about. The Gunners ran out easy 4-0 winners with most of the damage being done by the first half line-up. Andrey Arshavin grabbed the first when he put the finishing touch to an extensive passing move in the second minute. In the remainder of the half Jay Simpson converted two Jack Wilshere assists to make it 3-0 at the break.

The second forty-five minutes saw an entirely new eleven players and was a more muted half. Samir Nasri helped himself to a goal when one of the Barnet defenders stood on the ball leaving the Frenchman with only the goalkeeper to beat - which he did with aplomb.

Other observations from the day:

The team looked magnificent in their new kit. At last, a return to a proper Arsenal kit with proper white sleeves. We can go into next season with opponents knowing they are facing Arsenal Football Club instead of wondering if Charlton Athletic had turned up by mistake.

The summer’s two new signings made their first public appearances this afternoon. It is impossible to pass judgement on them at a game like this but early impressions are that Marouane Chamakh showed signs of playing very much like a classic English centre-forward. He is tall, played a lot of the time with his back to goal and looked adept at bringing others into the game. Not much came his way in terms of chances so there wasn't much to go on in terms of knowing what his finishing is like. He did look a little heavy-legged but he is bound to be short of fitness at this point in time.

Laurent Koscielny didn’t have much to do defensively during his first-half appearance. Most notable though was the slightness of his physical build. He is virtually the same height as Thomas Vermaelen - who is not exactly the tallest - but looks nowhere near as muscular and strong as the Belgian. Whether Arsene Wenger sees him as Vermaelen’s first-choice partner remains to be seen but, from today’s evidence, the manager ought to still be looking to add some genuine height to the middle of his back four.

Of the youngsters that turned out, most eyes were on Jack Wilshere. He had a patchy 45 minutes but did do some good things and his two assists for Jay Simpson showed composure and accuracy. The most impressive of the Young Guns on display though was Emmanuel Frimpong. His performance as the anchor in midfield was a major contribution to Arsenal’s dominance during the first period. Even at this early stage of the season, he showed tenacity, competitiveness and made more tackles than any other player all afternoon. He is built like a tank and those who have watched him come through the youth team ranks already know about his physical presence and strength but they also know he can play too. If Arsene Wenger was looking to mould a young player to be a successor to (or even competition for) Alex Song in the role of midfield enforcer, then Frimpong looks the most likely candidate to make that step up from within the youth ranks. Time will tell as to whether that will happen this season or next.

So, Arsene Wenger takes his squad off to their Austrian training camp on Monday night and the business of preparing for the new season starts in earnest. There is still much talk about potential new signings and it is hard to believe that there won’t be more new additions before the big kick-off in August. However, the one thing Arsenal supporters want to definitively know before then is whether Cesc Fabregas will be captaining the team next season.

The Gunners have maintained a dignified silence on this matter over the weeks of the World Cup. Their position is crystal-clear - Arsenal want Fabregas to stay and he is not for sale at any price. It is a shame that Barcelona are not hearing that and their players have not been able to keep their mouths shut. Carrying on where they left off at the end of last season, throughout the World Cup, all we have heard is Barca players talking about Cesc and his DNA. On and on and on and on they have droned all summer long, culminating in the grotesque spectacle of Puyol and Pique pulling a Barcelona shirt over Fabregas’s head at Spain’s victory parade.

Reams have been written online and in the media about the way Barcelona, their players and the Spanish press have acted with regard to trying to sign Cesc. It has been sordid, classless and is nothing more than tapping up by proxy. Arsenal fans ought to be proud of the way our club has conducted themselves through this onslaught. The club might have risen above it but feelings of Arsenal fans were perfectly summed up by a banner erected at the north end of Barnet’s ground today: “Barca, F**k You”.

All that said, no matter how much Arsenal might not want to sell him and however much Xavi, Puyol et al might keep talking to the press, only one man has the answer to how all this is going to turn out - and that is Cesc himself. Ultimately, if he wants to leave then, despite his contract, there will not be much Arsenal can do except try to take Barcelona for every Euro they have got - or rather, every Euro they can borrow at the moment. (If he says at Arsenal, at least he knows he will get paid at the end of every month.)

Following the Barnet match Arsene Wenger said that all the speculation about Fabregas needs to stop. The only way it will stop is if Cesc comes out and states his intentions clearly as to whether he is staying or going. And the sooner that happens the better. If Arsenal have to plan a future without him, then he ought to extend them the courtesy of giving as much notice as possible of that. Better though, would be for him to tell Barcelona, “thanks but no thanks” and commit himself to the Gunners for next season. Either way, absolute clarity on this matter is needed soon.

It’s make your mind up time, Cesc.

Who the hell is Fabregas himself without Arsenal.we brought him up.and we let the Fucking Barca know his quality, but whatever if he wanna go,plz let him go .Arshavin will do his work or my lovely Boy Nasri...we have a lot of Player who can do more then Fab believe me and again Arsene should go out for Ozil .we need that kind of a player in-case of injury at the middle of the season.

Posted by Zubeir on 07/18/2010

Arsenal need to sign More Players,We have seen how Arsenal played last season and what the result was the team need reinforcement,The Lads were tired and majority of best players were injured. However Arsen Wenger need to know that the youth system he is trying to develop will take years to yell fruits,The supporters need quick Trophies not nice passing footballing.

As for cesc,he should clear his mind and tell us were he want play.....we have seen alot of him wenger has faith in him but if he choose to leave and don't see why we should Arsenal Can't release him.I am much optimistic we can replace him as for sure.

Arsene is time to get a new goal keeper we don have a consistent goal keeper since lehman left,
and i fear we will be watching Amunia again this season who may make some good save this second and make some stupid mistake the next second.
Once our defender make mistake i already knew thats the end cos our last line defence is a joke!

If we give up Cesc now, it will be sending the message that you can just go to the media to get the players you want. Madrid did it with Ronaldo, Barca did it to us with Henry and Helb. We cant just get bullied out of our best players anymore. We have lost so many high quality players because other big clubs made a mess of their minds and made them think they wanted to go. Flamini is where now? Hleb hasnt played for barca is 2 years, Henry is in NYC although his more due to age than quality. We need to keep our great players as to ensure that people know this type of behaviour demonstrated by Barca is unacceptable and will not work. Another note, I'm glad to see Jack play well again. Maybe he will break into the first team reguarly this year. Also, like he said, we need another center back or 2 if Sol decides he doesnt want to play here anymore. WTF is up with him anyway. We bring him back, he has a great year, and now he doesnt want to play for the club. Ive always hated his attitude

Posted by cinnabon on 07/19/2010

cesc already made up his mind. he wants to leave. it is not in his hands, it is in the clubs hands. they can't hold him forever but they can for one or two seasons, given that he has 4 years left on his contract. whether they want to keep a disgruntled player, that is the captain is another matter though

Posted by Maran on 07/19/2010

Finally, David came to the rescue with the blog as good as the picture of the sunny afternoon at Barnet. With the boring headlines of World Cup and the agonising publicity on Cesc, and the lack of promising news on Arsenal, it was a dreadful break.
What else can we say about the shameful behaviour of all Barcelona players? The Banner at Barner sums it up all. Spain's winning of the WC made it worst. Are these world class players or low class pims? What was Pepe Reina doing for Barca? I have lost all respect for the spanish players and worst of the lot were those from barca.
You were absolutely right. Cesc has to speak up quickly. In some ways I think he is milking it - the attention. And I doubt his intentions. To be a man is more than sporting a beard - to speak your mind.
On the other end, there is nothing very promising about recruitment, or the team build up, it all sounds like familiar old story. Leaving it late, or at worst, inaction seems to be Arsene's forte.

Posted by Maran on 07/19/2010

There were few Arsenal players involved in World Cup. Alex Song, Eboue were anonymous, while Clichy, Sagna and Daiby grabbed headlines for the wrong reasons. The only two players who featured prominently were Van Persie and Cesc Fabregas. Persie played the lone striker for a certainly lucky Netherlands team. Although he did some assists and a scored a goal, he was largely unimpressive, with usual display of Persie ballerina performances. He had started promisingly at Arsenal, but he will not be a Bergkamp, not a Henry, with his injuries, I think he will not contribute to Arsenal's cause as much as we expect. Cesc is a sad story. His place in the Spanish team, as a bit part player is a ample precursor to his much "hailed" induction to Barca. Does it bring him greater satisfaction to enter a mafia run pimp society with his barca DNA than to play and lead a respectful team with a respected manager and loyal fans and with absolute confidence of getting paid at the end of each month? Decide.

Am a ugandan fan but what i want to see is cesc staying at emirates since we are building a strong team and possibly getting some new prayers because our problem is having a small team which is normally faced with injuries

Posted by Percy on 07/19/2010

You cannot argue the character Cesc brings to Arsernal... I think though that Abu is the most talented midfielder, he just lacked the character required to be a winner. But now with the exposure (though very little) he got at World Cup I hope to see a new Abu who can take the Fabregas role with his two hands.

i think fab should speak ot de arsenal faithiful and tall us what is run though is mind and be postier to us arsenal fan and arsen wenge should sign more play like de ozil and defender with stonge heart fab were love please do go

Arsenal play a total football, possessive style of play, entertaining and non-stop thriller. But one thing remains conspicuously absent all the time....that is CHARACTER AND MENTAL SOLIDITY.We need this to win trophy.UP GUNNERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by Phil on 07/19/2010

Cesc blah blah blah - let's get to the real issue:

"The team looked magnificent in their new kit. At last, a return to a proper Arsenal kit with proper white sleeves. We can go into next season with opponents knowing they are facing Arsenal Football Club instead of wondering if Charlton Athletic had turned up by mistake."

Win. I'm impressed with both the home and away... I'm this close to getting both, which would break my one shirt every 4-5 years tradition.

Posted by emeka on 07/19/2010

the only good place 4 fabregas so he should stay and 4 barcelona they should keep off

Posted by Thomas on 07/19/2010

I really want arsenal to convert their chances not by winning the preseason matches but making the best in the premier league this season by winning it and other tangible laurels like the champions league,FA cup and carling.

Posted by Yiddo on 07/19/2010

The problem with Cesc is that now he is potentially unsettled and this could affect his play. He most certainly must discard his captain's armband- there's no way he can continue in that role after being seen in public wearing the Barca shirt. This is the problem which will define Arsenal for the forseable future- despite the developement of the young guns.

Posted by MisterFootie on 07/19/2010

i can see the love fab is getting from his fellow country boyz, so of course he is feeling wanted in a special way. but i'm not so sure how many minutes he will get on the pitch. if it is significant, his game will advance by being surrounded by such talent. the arsenal road is more difficult but offers character and strength. but if you can't see why barca weighs heavy on his mind, then you are blinded. it's about winning hardware, and i just don't see that happening at emirates, even though i am a supporter. to lose fab will be a blow, but not one that can't be overcome by a bucket of money from his sale along with eduardo. wenger will diligently use that to accumulate more quality players at respectable prices. they still have persie, bendtner, nasri, arshavin, walcott, etc. which forms a solid core. but good luck finishing ahead of manutd, chelsea, with lpool and city on the fringe.

Beg but to differ but IMHO last season's kit was the best ever. The Retro stuff is just that Retro and ugly !

The name of the venue aptly describes our situation - underhill, not even downhill. This has become traditional as David puts it, not only for the pre-season warmups, but also for the performance. Massive victories in the pre-season and few massive victories in the first few weeks. A flurry of media commentaries touting Arsenal as "genuine title contenders".

Then...then... the wheeld start to come unstuck and unconvincing performances and embarrasing defeats follow. Then we end the season fighting teeth and nails to stay in Champions League place as if that's a trophy in itself.

I don't want my prognosis to come true, but Wenger needs to do real results-oriented transfers or else...

Posted by Arsen-io Hall on 07/19/2010

Cesc is here for another year at least. But he will go to Barca eventually. Get Schwarzer, Jagielka, more defense! And for god sakes don't get injured, I hope they are all hitting the weight room hard cuz they can't be getting tossed around like last season. Van Persie for sure, he's like a string bean out there. Gotta have strength now to win in the PL, all across the pitch.

Posted by Fabian on 07/19/2010

Wenger has to be more decisive and get the players. The squad as it is will struggle to claim a top 4 finish. It doesn't matter how much we believe in the manager, we desperately need two WORLD CLASS players.Granted, Koscielny and Chamakh are great, but come on we deserve better.

Posted by Ali on 07/19/2010

Arsenal is a professional football club not a youth academy; therefore, Arsene needs to sign quality players. He has been developing players at expense of Arsenal funs for others to come and take them and that need to stop. Arsenal FC needs to appreciate its funs by winning trophies not rising kids to superstar for others and making money for its stockholders.

There are plenty well qualified players that love to play for our team; therefore, if unfaithful players like Henry, Helb, Flamini and maybe Fabregas want to become bench warmers for others we still can compete with the best and not fold at the end of the season. I hope Arsene has learned his lesson from past mistakes and reinforce our team with players how want to play and win for ARSENAL.

Posted by Rockstar on 07/19/2010

We can live without Fab. There are many players out there that are as good and better. Look, like it or not, Fab isn't really acting like he is Gunner through and through. As for the Barca shirt, did he show up on film anytime soon after (days) in an Arsenal shirt? Nope. I for one think he is as good as gone, the only thing to work out is the $$. Too bad too. To think that Barca are not gonna win anything next term. Real will take alot to beat. And barca know damn well that they had better get all the quality they can.

GOONER FOREVER

Posted by bunny on 07/20/2010

If Barca really wants to get fab then they gotta put their money in their mouth!! they keep saying they want fab but they don't want to pay the price instead wanted a huge discount! Using cheap tricks

Posted by Peter on 07/20/2010

As stated by others the way teams like Barca and Real Madrid run around bullying teams to get their players without any respect for their contract is nothing but a disgrace (just like the fact that all those idiots forget they signed a contract as soon as the spanish teams borrowed money comes knocking)

and if Fabragas really wants to leave now I'll lose all respect for him, as he knows Arsenal built a team around him, bailing now would be an insult to all the years Wenger had him play as a starter (at a time when in barcellona he would have been a ball boy at best, and really he might end up warming their bench even now)

I really think Arsenal should remind him he signed a contract and refuse to sell him to anybody until said contract runs out, if he doesn't like it, whatever, bench him, better to waste money now than to spend years developing players so Barca and Real can literally rip them out of their clubs whenever they want

Posted by Akeem Aeyeye on 07/20/2010

I have decided to henceforth follow arsenal with less passion b'cos the coach can give one high blood pressure.whichever way he wants to steer the ship of the club i'm sure he will still not win anything next season as long as he does not change his approach.it is a physical game in englands but our friend goes about recruiting short and soft players.those guys cannot withstand the rigors of the game in england.best of luck o...

I'm still waitin to see what the season really holds in store for the club.
Is it just goin to be another charade where we just run through the season with so much good football but endin with nothin to really show for it?
Or is it goin to be a wonderfuil season with the best football capped up with the Premiership trophy. Mind u, 'PREMIERSHIP'!
I'm still waitin. 'Cos good signings or good football ain't just about the best Arsenal fans are lookin for right now: 'THEY WANT MORE'.
and it's been disappointin. Really. I've been an Arsenal fan since childhood and it's been hard goin through every season full of initial hope only for d hope to be cut short halfway or sometimes (most times actually) towards the end of the season.
"This shouldn't be another 'Trophyless Season'!"
But I'm still hopeful...

GUNNERS 4 LIFE,As the new season is about to start i which them best of luck.Wenger need to sign more new player, and i know chamakh is one of the player that will do the magic for us this season.

Posted by emoni on 07/20/2010

i think a wenger should buy more players, there are more world class players to go for this season let him give us happy season by getting fresh legs in the defence and in the midfield because this are critical areas we have not ventured for long.

Posted by ARun on 07/20/2010

We need more defenders...let Clichy go if he wants to. He has been rubbish since coming back form injury. And sagna is not good enough to be first choice. He can be second choice behind a new right back. And TWO more central defenders (Djorrou is always injured). Why cant Arsenal look at someone like Ivan Cordoba? Proven class at the top level, now a bench warmer at Inter Milan, loads of experience. Old? Yes, but still 3 or 4 years left in him (younger than gallas or campbell anyway). And Arsenal do need some experience at the back. Instead of a less established Zapata.

Posted by a. rahman on 07/20/2010

Nice to have you back Dave.Time is really running out. I would have thought that Arsene would have completed the transfer dealings by now so thatthere will be time to bed in the nwe players. Anyway, i still believe that we need a goal keeper, a defensive midfielder, another central defender and perhaps another striker. What is happening to Dojorou. It's a shame that we missed out on Joe Cole.

Posted by Kelvin Ng on 07/20/2010

Just spend some real money already

Posted by Sammy on 07/20/2010

Even F.A Cup just to start with????Sincerely, how did Wenger think that Koscielny can replace Gallas???Who will play in case Varmaelen gets an injury, is he thinking about these things???Can we play our strongest squad in F.A Cup and Carling cup, just for our players to have a feel of any trophy they can achieve???

Posted by mivsky on 07/20/2010

Ali is right. Arsenal is not a youth academy. In fact I'd say the youth academy is not used well at all at AFC. It's a breeding ground for other clubs. So why this blogger bothers writing about all these players coming up when Wenger either ignores them or loses them to other clubs is stupid.

LOL Its make your mind up time Cesc. I'm sure he'll do that now that YOU have told him to.

Posted by Rsenal on 07/20/2010

Why so much of Cesc? Cos Arsenal do not have enough depth in their team. Otherwise they might have considered selling him. A gem like Cesc that can unlock defenses with his pass are rare now a days.

And another thing is, I seriously doubt he will have any part of Barca first team role. Cesc don't play like other spanish dude. He is playing direct and fast passing football similar to English and Arsenal game. Where players need to run to empty spaces to collect the ball. Spanish players prefer ball being passed to their feet.

Cesc will be warming the bench and waiting for sub role or when either Messi,Xavi,Iniesta is injured to have a chance to play.

Let see if Arsene got the balance right this season. Buy sensibly and invest in more depth for injury cover. Go Arsenal!

Posted by Harold on 07/20/2010

ZZiwa your footballing knowledge is suspect. Netherlands was not lucky plus Van Persie is the best player at Arsenal though he did play poorly in the world cup

Posted by George on 07/20/2010

Big up from Nairobi. Arsene should move and get a reliable goalie. Cesc should just get back and play ball, probably after conversing with Henry, Hleb, Flamini and Vieira! Come out blazing Gunners....this is your season.

Posted by Kaycee on 07/20/2010

Is a pity that wenger is still making the mistake of yesteryears that is not signing experienced players.Sooner or later the transfer window will close and all we can boast of is only one signing and a free agent player.PLS MR WENGER SIGN QUALITY AND EXPERINCED PLAYER,if u do dis even if Fabrigas leaves it will not be much problem for us.

Posted by mark on 07/20/2010

outstanding article mate..well said. And you articulate our feelings toward Barca exactly.

They have been classless, uprofessional, and some of their player's comments have bordered on the tapping up boundaries. I am proud of how Arsenal and it's fans have handled all of this - hs been difficult.

Fab...one way or the other...let's put closure to this.

Arsenal need to sign more players like the germany player ozil he was awesome in south African. We do not need to depend on Alumina any more

Posted by Ssebuliba Robert on 07/20/2010

I aptly do not conquer with the departure of the midfield general the world has lived to observe.
but water can never be forced out of a rock, if Fab feels its the right time to call off his Arsenal career, then let him go and pave way for the next Messi of this world, I mean Wilshire or even Wenger can mobilise some funds from the sale of Fab to recruit the much younger antagonising Germany international Mesut Ozil.
No player is bigger than a club like Arsenal with its loyal funs.
Hleb left then Henry did, but where are they now?
Fab is leaving Arsenal but I have to foretell that he is putting his career at stake though at a tender age.
Le professor sir, its high time you brought us a world class goal keeper in the mould of Portugal's Eduardo because with Almunia, the club is not anywhere close to silver ware.

Posted by arsenalwin on 07/20/2010

I think it is possible to let Fab go, if we can get minimum of 40m. Then we can buy, for example, Ozil, a central defender, a defensive midfielder aged over 25. Fab's contribution was huge last season, but I'm quite worried to expect such a contribution this year again from a player who spent whole summer with bunch of cunts and winning world cup with them, and who still did not make his mind clear. Germany and England proved, in very different way, yet again that football isn't only about individual quality. Cesc is huge, ok, but he is one player and Arsenal is all of us. If he has to go, go fast and bring us decent amount of money. I'm pretty sure that Ozil can do the job, cheaper. If we can sign plus one decent holding midfielder, there's some out there, we won't miss that much barcelona boy. and don't forget that we still have arshavin and rvp.

i think cesc is right too stay with us as if the barca players didnt put so much media pressure on him he would probably have gone in the summer!!
the barca players are a fool too themselves and the pressure so intensified that cesc decided too stay!!
barcalona are far too antagonistic for cescis liking and have forced the decision too stay at arsenal out off him because off there persistance and the p[ressure he would have on his shoulders if he was too become a barca player!!
i also think that arsena wenger has dealt with the situation too arsenals advantage as he has given cesc the freedom too choose whereas barcalona have tried too force the decision out off him!! as a result off this because arsena has not put him under pressure cesc has felt less terrorised and has felt more free in the making off his decision and as a result arsena has made his mind up for him which confirms too my knowledge thar arsena is much more off a shrewd manager tactically than pep guardiolla

I am from Philippines, a country where soccer is not that popular. But since 1997, I've been a fan of Arsenal, a solid fan...I really wanted to see cesc stay as a gunner. But if he goes, then so be it, there will always be someone else to shine for the gunners.

Posted by Claudio on 07/21/2010

I admire Arsenal, but I also admire Barca. I think most forget that the only reason Cesc went to Arsenal, is because outside of UK, you need to be 18 to sign a professional contract. The UK has taken numerous prospects from around the world. Have Arsenal helped develop Cesc? Sure. Also, Cesc has already stated he wants to go to Barca. But he is letting his agent do the work. He is not like Roni or Aba and is not going to the media to demand a trade.

Posted by Sean on 07/21/2010

Two things I've noticed in the comments so far: First of all Ozil is not for sale. Unlike Cesc, Ozil came out and said that he was not for sale even after his unreal performace at the World Cup. Do you people who keep saying, "Sell Fabs, buy Ozil" want us to pull a Barcelona and try and lure him away?

Second, to the people who want the squad to invest in more strikers: are you crazy? We were one of the top scoring squads in the league last season even with Van Persie out for so long. We've also just brought in Chamakh who looks like a really good investment.

Two more defenders and a keeper or we're not going to win any trophies this season.

Glad to see such a long list of comments on my favourite club,Arsenal.I guess we all share the same passion for this one club.

I would like to point out the importance of a gaffer.I give utmost respect to Arsene Wenger after what had happened last season.Who would have guessed that Arsenal had a chance on the championship.I only blamed that we run out of luck in the end.Injuries took us out.I agreed with Arsene that Arsenal could have won it last season without the need of new players. The players themselves lack the belief that Arsene had in them, and experience to hold the pressure of title chase.I am sure they would have learnt their lessons by now.But things are different now with clubs such as Man City, Spurs and Liverpool strengthened.I expect the players to toughen up and be ready to take hard tackles as this is how our rivals scrutinize us all time.

I am delighted to see Arsene making purchases and being so active in the transfer market now.It just shows he knows his stuff.

Cesc and Ozil are different players with different qualities. Ozil is more like Nasri and, for that matter, Joe Cole. Great receiving the ball near/in the box, havoc for defenders, can finish or cross/pass. But Cesc is a midfield creator. He is an excellent passer, sees the field exceptionally, and is creative in distribution both deep and near the box. He is like Xavi except more aggressive/direct but less technically polished (for now). Ozil cannot fill those shoes. Gourcuff is a similar player but, at least now, is of lesser quality than Cesc. Ramsey and Wilshere are developing and may be like Cesc, but haven't gotten there yet. Which is why we can't lose Cesc. There is no available ready replacement. We would undoubtedly take a step back just as United would without Rooney or Liverpool without Gerrard.

As for transfers, I agree that a keeper and a top centre half are needed. Wenger has lost confidence in Almunia. The others are not ready. And too much is unproven at centre back.

THE ARSENAL HYPE

Its yet another new season and the hype surrounding Arsenal winning the premier league continues to blossom after wins to lowly Bannet and mere Sturm Graz.

As an ardent Arsenal fan, i really wish the team can achieve something after this prolonged 5 year drought of promising. But with the unproven signings Arsene Wenger continues to make such as Laurent Koscielny, i really doubt whether our dream will come to pass.

Additionally, the unskilled talents of players such as Denilson, Bendtner, Almunia amongst others should be disposed if Arsenal football club is to achieve any success in the near future.

On the whole, the Arsenal fans have been far too passionate for a while and really deserve something to show for it rather than the constant seasonal heartbreaks we always get....almost doesnt win us cups...we need the big trophies.

All the best to Arsenal this season.

What we really need is a good goalkeeper. I feel that we could have won it if we had had a better keeper last season who didn't let him so many goals. Also, Fabregas shouldn't move. Look at Barca's line up. They already have have so many world class midfielders where is fabregas going to fit in? He's just going to end up as a bench warmer and be sold when he's old to another club.

Time is running out please Arsene try and do something about the goalkeeping side and the centre defend hurry up know you have the money to spend go ahead and do it before it is too late.

Arsenal, I will support you all the way no matter who is leaving and who is coming. Fabregas, if you tend to leave you might become like a sub players sitting off the bench and pray for xavi or iniesta to get injury.
I have taken long time to accept the fact of Henry departure; Fab, you can just leave and I won't feel sad because you don't deserve it.

Wenger, I as a supporter of Arsenal, would like to see the gunners to lift up the throphies, not looking for reasons to excuse for the empty hands. Please bring in one more defender and one def midfield and one goal keeper (Stekelenburg or Akinfeev will be fit for us).

You can choose to please your fans by winning thropies or please the Arsenal board by training and selling talent to make money. You always have a choice.

Finally, I will still go and buy an Arsenal Jersey even it looked same as last year, I will still support them like 13 years ago. Wish Arsenal Good Luck and make a tunder to everyone especially F**King Barca~

To Mr Wenger,

I really hope you read this. For what i see if Arsenal are really to win the EPL for the first time 2010/2011, they still need to sign 1 world class goalkeeper, a top defensive midfielder and probably a top class center back to provide the cover for vermalean and koscieny. I recommend uruguay lugano or germany metersacker. for a top midfielder or attacking players i recommend ozil or van der vart. Ozil can be attacking or either choose the van der vart to provide defensive cover. Please get rid of Vela, Almunia, Sol Campbell probably bendtner. Sign a good players to replace bendtner and i recommend Luis Suarez.

we obviously have a good team but my opinions on starting eleven, if anyone has any comments plz reply. This formation includes players i think arsene wenger shuld buy if possible and including current players.

4-4-2 FORMATION

Sagna Laurent Koscielny Vermaleen Eboue

Nasri/Ozil Fabregas/Gourcuff Rosiscky Arshavin

Chamakh Van Persie

I don't understand why people are constantly demanding that Arsene sign another star striker and another big name defensive midfielder. We need neither (though I won't complain if we add depth).

In front we already have RVP, Chamakh, Bendtner, and Vela. And Arshavin and Walcott can play there in a pinch. And youngsters like Simpson and Freeman are showing promise. And we only play with one centre forward anyway!

Ahead of the back four we already have a top class player in Song. Eastmond has been blooded there for the first team and looks a player. And Frimpong has looked extremely promising. And both Denilson and Diaby can fill in if necessary (though I don't rate either in that role).

With the new 25-man rule (and the U-21 exception), Arsene's prudent transfer policy and dedication to developing youth are proven even wiser. Lets just address our real needs and call it a day. Any of Stekelenberg, Akinfeev, Handanovic, or Hart would be great, as would a proven centre half.

Posted by Eddo on 07/28/2010

Let us not underestimate challenges of EPL and CL guys. Arsenal needs to buy one other good defender (to compliments with Korcieny, Vermaulen), a goalkeeper(to take no 1 jersey),another holding midfielder or a winger/passer to help Cesc, someone at level of Gourcouf or Ashley Young. They also need one good striker (if we can match asking price for Balotelli from Inter then it will be like winning jackpot), some one at level of van persie style.
The current squad is good but i don't see it to go beyond March 2011, most of them will be either tired or injured and some lost form, so Mr Wenger, please and please again, go and get good players as proposed above. The board should give you exception this year, we really need a trophy.

Posted by joseph b on 07/28/2010

Arsene is doing it again..gave us so much hope at the end of last season and now two weeks to the end of the transfer window, all he has signed is a one player and a free agent.Guys i know we are hardcore but five years without a trophy is too long.
And when the season starts,Arsenal will play some beautiful football and excite us all, raise our hopes, only to be plagued by injuries and fade when it matters most.its frustrating even before the season starts.

Posted by anderson sibanda on 07/29/2010

The waste mistake Cescs can make is to join Barca.arsenal just now need an out right striker and a defender.in mid we are ok,we have the best.always for gunners

Posted by themba on 07/30/2010

Cesc should stop playing with our hurts and just make a decision if he wants to stay or not, so that barca can stay of his back.
