Arsenal

You do have to wonder at the intelligence levels of some Arsenal players. With a summer ahead in which Arsene Wenger has already stated that changes will be afoot, you would imagine that some of these guys are currently playing for their places as the season winds down. Well, there is precious little evidence of many of them seeming that bothered about that as they turned in a spineless performance at Ewood Park on Monday and got turned over by Blackburn.

Yes, there are no longer any trophies to play for, and maybe it is inevitable that there will be a natural drop in application because of that, but one point from their last four games is a pitiful return that shows a total lack of pride, passion and professionalism. The Gunners have been so feeble recently that they have now actually given themselves something to play for in the last game against Fulham having allowed Spurs within touching distance of third place following their victory at Eastlands last night.

To add to the irritation, we had to put up with Arsene Wenger claiming in his post-match interviews that Sam Allardyce’s Blackburn were over-physical, that they targeted Lukasz Fabianski and both their goals should have been disallowed. Yes, there were a few challenges that maybe crossed the line but there wasn’t much wrong with the tactics of pressurising the Pole and certainly nothing to complain about regarding the home team’s goals. The simple truth is that Arsenal allowed themselves to be pushed around and paid the price for it.

I really hate that this team is so easily bullied out of games. The manager bangs on about getting more protection from referees but he will be waiting until the end of time for that to happen. Besides which, why should the players have to rely on someone else to protect them? They should be able to stand up for themselves. Managers like Allardyce only use such tactics against the Gunners because they know they will work. In the early years of Wenger’s reign, Arsenal had players who took no prisoners and who could fight fire with fire. They picked up quite a few red cards along the way but I would rather that than suffer watching this team of lightweights with some sort of victim mentality get so easily brushed aside by opposition who are prepared to use their physical strength.

We all know that Arsene Wenger will go to extraordinary lengths to defend his players in post-match interviews to the point of going on rants that open him up to the criticism of being a moaner. It is obvious that he does this to divert attention away from the team’s short-comings and keep the media off their back. However, I wonder what he really thought of the performance against Blackburn privately and behind closed doors? Despite his protestations about the goals at least he had the good grace to admit that it was a poor performance. And it was.

Whilst I respect the manager’s policy of sticking up for his players - and sometimes arguing black is white in doing so - I do sometimes wish that he would publicly criticise them on occasion. You get the impression that too many of them are complacent about both their own ability and their place in the squad. They lead a cosseted life under a manager that seems to mollycoddle them. Now and again, it wouldn’t hurt to have the bubble some of them exist in burst. I don’t think Wenger needs to be calling individuals out by name on a weekly basis but maybe some occasional harsh words about them collectively might wake up their ideas.

There is at least a bit of positive news this week as the much vaunted transfer of Marouane Chamakh seems to be finally coming to pass. This one has been dragging on for a year now, so it is good that a conclusion appears imminent. I think it is vital that Wenger does secure a few early signings before the World Cup and this is at least a start. What none of us want is for him to be scrabbling around on deadline day trying to pass off signings like Mikael Silvestre as well-thought-out acquisitions.

Anyway, the Gunners face Fulham on Sunday in the final game of the season. The Cottagers are likely to field a weakened team with their Europa Cup Final following. Arsenal need a draw to clinch third place assuming Spurs don’t run a double-figure victory at Burnley. Ideally though, winning their valedictory match should be the goal. Losing is not an option. The idea of relinquishing third place to their fiercest rivals ought to be as unthinkable to the players as it is to the fans.

They have ninety more minutes to atone for some of the shabbiness of the last four games. Failure to do so could result in their "lap of gratitude" taking place in an empty stadium.

Spot on.

I agree that the thrust of your post. The players were playing as if they were suffering from a collective hang-over. I don't think that I have ever seen Diaby play worse.

You rightly mentioned the fact that they have something to play for with regard to the third place. But this is a worry. In the recent past whenever our players have had something to play for, they have collapsed spectacularly. As such I am full of foreboding about how they are going to fare. In these matches, I have caught myself being expectant and even jubilant only to slowly see this replaced with incredulity and shock horror.

AW inherited a strong defence from GG, well able to take care of business. He built on this with the addition of Sol. But gradually we have turned into a team of youth defence who are neither tall enough nor strong enough when the going gets hard. Anyone who knows the premier league will readily tell you that it is very physical. The question is "Why are we so evidently weak?"

Posted by Maran on 05/07/2010

The feeble performance is symptomatic of the ineptness of the team in recent years with the obvious lack of desire, failure to adapt, lack of "intelligence" and lack of maturity. This is the root cause of our dissapointment, not the obsession with trophies. I think the manager has to hold much of the responsibility. For over over-protecting his kids and letting them degenerate in the ivory tower. The much touted Arshavin,Rosicky have barely made the difference. High potentials such as Nasri and Walcott do not show any promise. The talisman Fabregas' quality not capitalised. Whis is this so? The manager allows sub-par performance go unpunished and uncorrected. To the contrary he shows blind faith in players like Denilson, Diaby,Eboue and the great Bendtner. Something needs to be done. But at this moment, they should at least not let the unthinkable happen. From once title contenders to be overtaken by North london rivals for third. I wonder whether they understand what this means.

I fully agree that Wenger has been overprotecting his players in his post-match review. He should clearly point out the under performance of his squad in the latest four games which is far below the level expected of an elite team. The results are disappointing and hurting to gunners. The need to strengthen our defence is loud and clear. Does that reach you, Arsene?

The club performans overall not bad. they play well. Have young players. they did there best. The problem for Ending the season fabrigas, arseving, gallas, ven persie, injured specially fabrigas and arservin, gallas.
camble performance is not good but vermellen did his best. Arsenal need some good players. specially 1 goal keeper, 1defence player, midfielder and forward. The problem is any department one player injured no one can replace. Last 4 matches fabiaski performance not good. Hope to buy some good player. Definetly arsen venger is the best coach in the world

Posted by wen_detta on 05/07/2010

jameel, do you ever playing football? if yes, how come you say campbell is no good? but i have to agree on gk..one is a clown..the other one is his son:D

Posted by Francis on 05/07/2010

We definitely need some reinforcements and I trust Arsene Wenger to work his magic in the transfer market. As for the current players, I think we can Fabianski and Diaby are playing as if it is the off-season already. I don't believe our players are showing enough guts in the match to make me want to cheer them on. The passion in this current squad is lacking except for a few of the players.

Posted by kenttiple on 05/07/2010

Diaby was just a nuisance to the team he should go..alot of them are like him i hope Wengy(stingy) open's he's eyes and do the right thing...Spot on David so fed up with these thier lack of rubbish...Hisssss

Posted by ifeanyi udemezue on 05/07/2010

Great post, Dave. I agree with your summation but i want to add that it would be insane for any person to complain about the tactics of Blackburn. They realised how useless Fabianski has been and simply crowded him out. Almunia, notwithstanding that he is poor as well, would not have allowed himself to be so treated. I certainly cannot remember Lehman being bullied by an opposing team when he was around. The goal area is the keeper's territory and Fabianski must realise that, though i believe that Arsene should put him out of his misery by letting him go. As stated by Dave, the players must protect themselves and should never wait for the referees. It is becoming annoying that Arsene would always compalin about physicality. Vieira was 19/20 when he joined Arsenal and settled down in no time though he took a few red cards on the way. Was Arsene complaining about physicality then? The issue is that he signed below par players in Diaby, Denilson, Silvestre etc. Even Clichy is inconsistent.

Packing the team with more strikers is senseless. First and foremost is to build a half-line and back-line with formitable, skilled players. It's sad to see the Arsenal players bullied and pushed around. Vermaelen is a great foundation to build on. Next season he'll be more acclimated to the league and I expect more assertiveness from him. Finally. we need a team enforcer in midfield. I long for the days of Veira and Bergkamp. Let's return to the beautiful game the gunners play so well with the caveat that our enforcer(s) will give tit for tat

Posted by Philip on 05/07/2010

Next year's season begins with the next game, and the next game began with the last practice.

Time to realize that and act like professionals with something (a career?) on the line. Enough of this c*&p! Play with pride and professionalism.

Arsene, Give Campbell some help and add some spine as well as talent in the summer.

Posted by Chris on 05/07/2010

Being too critical of your team!

Posted by Don on 05/07/2010

Not happy with the performance, fortunately nothing was on the line. But they have to end well on Sunday. I agree they need to step up and not get bullied around. If your opponents are going to crowd the keeper and get away with it, you need to do the same. Also not sure what is up with Arshavin. Hie comments about going to Barcelona this summer is a little concerning. He needs to focus on who is giving him his pay check. Looking forward to some new players. I just hope this player Chamakh is a finisher. We really needs someone that can take advantage of all the opportunities that this team creates. This style of play where they just pass the ball around outside the box is driving me crazy. They definitely need to find the killer instinct in front of the goal. Anyway time to start looking forward to next season.

sometimes you wonder what is the problem with arsenal

Posted by Dapo on 05/08/2010

David, you have hit the nail on its head on the right spot.Wenger and the players should understand that we 've had enough heart attack football. We simply want fantastic football + results + trophies even if it's carling cup.

Posted by bugmanaussie on 05/08/2010

My team, my heart, Arsenal.
We need heart gentleman, solid and dependable players with heart.
Arsene, stopping defending the indefensable, Fabranski is a goalkeeper, and will always be pushed around, now's the time he needs to push back! or quit the game. People tend to look back on previous squads; periods of the game and draw comparisons, unfortunately there are none, not with the current squad I'm afraid, there appears to be no heart, and that is Inexcusable.

Posted by R on 05/08/2010

PLS sell fabianski and manual almunia!!!PLS and buy hugo Lloris from lyon!!!! and put mannone as a first choice goalkeeper!!!i hope mr wenger will do that!!

Posted by seray on 05/08/2010

I wonder how many players AW will buy or replace this season? Replacing players means that, when a player is sold or left the team (such as kolo)- he then be replace with thomas valermelen. While adebayor has never been replace, maybe he's is now been replace with chamark. David please tell AW to buy no player less than 6ft tall and more than 23years. may be Aw will replace lehman this time. we never replace kelib we sold to barcelonia neither did we replace the french player that left for AC milan on a free transfer. until we replace those players, then add with 2 to 3 standard players before we can have a chanc of winning anything. If AW did not do that, there is no way we will make it to the top 4 next season, let alone win anything. Totham, man city and liverpool dont just express their intensions of buying players but they do that with actions.I hope arsenal will learn from that if they truely wants to maintan their top 4 position. tell AW to stop fooling himself with excuses.

i want arsenals to buy new players so that we can win about three or more trophy every year

Posted by Andy the Arsenal Manager in FM 2009 on 05/08/2010

Maybe Arsene, should play Football Manager. I've signed players like Vagner Love, Srna, Velso, Pandev.

I let Denilson, Diaby, Song go in first day of managing Arsenal in the game.

Drastic measures to improve the team. Those 3 clowns are just taking a paycheck and not real professional players.

And our goalkeepers, might as well be an open goal with the quality effort they put in.

Posted by timmy paul on 05/09/2010

yes i totally agree with the writer!! and wenger needs to get his act together as well! as it was he who bought these chumps!! as a die hard arsenal fan!! i'm totally guted at the moment. blazen paul, bermuda.

I think Arsenal need a better goalkeeper and a more solid defence.
I am a big fan of Arsene but I wonder what the same team would do under a manager like Mourinho

Posted by Day Nile on 05/09/2010

Well I thought we were bullied through every game of the season, by other teams.

Posted by Maran on 05/10/2010

Wenger said in interview "Overall we had a season with a good attitude and strong character..Is a lot of strengthening a number or quality?" I do not think Wenger will ever change his mind about his so-called quality players. It was evident that his players were way off the mark when comparing to Man U and Chelsea, not to mention Barca. It was a mix of luck and unexpected results in the competition this season helped Arsenal to third place. Not because of the quality and attitude he thinks. Anyone watching the last 3 games will say better about the character of the team. And yesterday, they took a stroll in the park, literally. It is evident Wenger only sees the technical abilities of these players as quality. What he must realise is that real quality is what you achieve on the field, and that requires attitude and character. There is very little hope for future with the manager not keen on making significant changes, both in the treatment of the players and the fabric of the team.

Posted by pascal Hantolo on 05/10/2010

i totally agree with the writer, but he has forgotten to mention the wenger has gotten used to failure therefore, we see lose of appetite to win trophies. the Arsenal manager needs to step out of his comfort zone and do the very things he thinks cant make this team strong. the players seem to do the opposite of what the couch wants on the pitch, this shows that they have no faith in him.
he needs new players who are hungry to lift trophies.

Posted by Boliii on 05/10/2010

Mr Wenger has forgotten the pedigree of players he had in his team, Bergkamp, Henry, Pires, Vierra. These guys had BALLS, passion and were the real gunners. At this point i CANNOT be interested in any of his excuses. We've had enuf!

Posted by David on 05/10/2010

Excellent posts here for the most part. I've been a fan since 1996 and I am in full agreement with some of the other bloggers of the lack of physical dominance by this current crop of Arsenal players. What I can't understand is why Arsene Wenger refuses to acknowledge two or of the most obvious shortcomings - defence, especially from set pieces, and lack of physical presence in the midfield. Why doesn't he address this? It's true that we have skilled midfielders but the fact is some of them have no heart, passion or physical strength. It's like knocking over a little boy in midfield. I agree with Dave Chow - I am disappointed with Arsenal not because they are not winning trophies but the gutless and pitifull way they are surrendering in some games. There is no burning desire or compunction to win. It was evident from the second half against Barca. And sorry Arsene, but if you're reading this, how can you use the Barca loss as an excuse for the poor subsequent performance?

Posted by David on 05/10/2010

And just to continue my rant - the game after Barca was Tottenham with the title possibility still on the line! That should have been all the motivation they needed but instead they were inexcusably poor! Silvestre - this feeble excuse for a player has got to go. His time came, passed and collected dust. Campbell - fit for the bench, although once great. Bendtner - nobody get me started on this guy. Vermealen (excuse spelling) was a good signing... Fabianski - waste of oxygen. How does Wenger pick him over Mannone? I remember an era when Arsenal always fought to the bitter end. Teams would go through hell to battle guys like Adams, Bergkamp, Viera, Henry, Pires, Parlour and Petit. A win over Arsenal was actually an achievement. People criticize the likes of Real Madrid for buying every player and their grandmother, but I think it's high time that Arsenal made a couple big purchases. Why can't we be the team to buy an available Fernando Torres or Carlos Tevez?

Posted by charvakan on 05/10/2010

I can't believe someone was asking AW to get rid of Song--he's one of our most valuable players, and the main reason Vermaelen and Gallas were comfortable back there when they were both healthy. AW seems to want to make a CD out of Song, but if he does, he needs a strong skillful holding MF to replace him. I'd rather we buy a big tough back, though, as Gallas is getting hurt a lot and neither Silvestre nor Campbell is someone we can rely on for low-error defending. I never thought I'd be sorry we dealt Senderos away!

Chamakh is a wonderful addition. Assuming RVP is healthy most of the season, we're in good shape up front and should probably sell Bendtner while his stock is high. Rosicky needs to be let go--he's not got the quality anymore. Abu Diaby could be loaned out, but he's very talented and will get better. We need to pull Wilshere back from Bolton and hope Ramsay heals quickly.

Finally, AW was trying to give Fabianski a chance to increase his value. He'll sell him.

Posted by charvakan on 05/10/2010

Wenger is a manager who understands that football is a business. He's not a great tactician or a motivator. But he has a fine eye for young talent and has produced a solid foundation for the future: on-the-field success, beautiful crowd-pleasing football, and a healthy bottom line for the club. If you want a full trophy case, find a rich investor and blow the bank on Jose Mourinho and a stable of players in their prime. But don't come crying back here when it all goes sour in three or four years. Arsenal is top four and Champions' League every year. Ask Liverpool fans if they'd trade our next five years for theirs. The trophies will come, and in the meantime, we get to watch some of the most exciting football in the world. Not bad.

Posted by Filip on 05/10/2010

I don't know exactly what to add. We do need BALLS, but those are the kind of players which are the hardest to get because you loathe spending money on intangibles. It would be awesome if Diaby will turn into an enforcer, being rather imposing on the pitch, but he likes to play more further up...and he's not good enough for that. Is Coquelin that type of player? Is there anybody in the academy that seems like not backing down from a fight (other then Eboue), so next time Essien and Ballack show their muscles, our guys don't twat out. I hated this season. There was not a single game I'll remember. Wait, no, there will be one - the first game against Everton...See ya next August everyone...!

Posted by Maran on 05/11/2010

David,
We all thought Arshavin will bring the extra bit of quality to the side alongside Fabregas. But somehow as the season went on, there were indications that Arshavin has been straying off course on a few ocassions. Firstly he had comments about getting star players in the squad, especially at a time where his performance was well below par. Secondly he had riduculous misses when he had a more front role in the team. Recently I noticed his heart was not in the game.

Do you think he has grown disillusioned with the team? Particlarly in the match against Fulham, he was a little selfish - was ok so long he scored. But his body language on some occassions was a little less than desirable.

I cannot pin it, but think something is not right. Is anything brewing?
