A late, late strike from Nicklas Bendtner saw the Gunners take all three points at the KC Stadium yesterday afternoon and keep their title aspirations well-and-truly alive. Sometimes there are moments that turn a season - or at least seem to nudge it in the right direction. The injury to Aaron Ramsey and the resultant response by the players to go on and win the match at Stoke was one and the big Dane's winner late in injury time at Hull could turn out to be another.

Arsenal started the afternoon well enough and took the lead after 14 minutes through Andrey Arshavin. The build-up to the goal was a fantastic sweeping move that showed the best of Arsene Wenger's team. Crisp passes were inter-changed until Bendtner fizzed a final assist into Arshavin’s path. The diminutive Russian still had plenty to do but managed to fend off the attentions of two defenders before firing off a shot into the net.

From there, it looked like the Gunners might run away with it but Hull got back on terms courtesy of a highly debatable penalty. Much has been made about the fact that Vennegoor of Hesselink was offside when the through-ball was struck but the contact with Sol Campbell was also pretty minimal. Television replays seemed to show the Hull player almost throw himself across the Campbell’s path to invite contact. A coming-together was inevitable and Vennegoor was only too happy to go down. Even ignoring the failure of the linesman to flag for offside, it was a very soft decision. Jimmy Bullard converted the kick to put the Tigers level.

Hull’s George Boateng then added another twist to the match by getting himself sent off just before the break. In the first instance, he poked Nicklas Bendtner in the eye off the ball - why Bendtner also got booked following the incident was an absolute mystery. A few minutes later Boateng then inflicted the sort of challenge on Bacery Sagna that pretty much underlined everything Arsene Wenger said after the Aaron Ramsey incident. It was a disgraceful tackle - his were studs raised and contact was halfway up Sagna’s lower-leg. Fortunately, the Frenchman was in motion and did not have his foot planted otherwise a repeat of what happened to Ramsey could have been on the cards. Boateng received two yellows but both incidents could have been seen as red card moments. Either way, he could have no complaints at getting his marching orders.

Credit to Hull though, reduced to ten men they looked the more assertive team in opening period of the second half. Though they barely troubled Manuel Almunia, they certainly did not allow Arsenal to take control of the match. As the game wore on though, the Gunners’ numerical advantage finally began to count as they threw everything forward in search of a winner. Even so, Hull stood firm.

The moment that decided it came three minutes into injury-time when Denilson launched a speculative long-range shot that Boaz Myhill in the Hull goal parried straight back into the danger area. Nicklas Bendtner reacted first and fasted and tucked home the rebound. It was a massive moment and, on the back of his hat-trick against Porto, was another big step in the right direction individually for the Dane.

It might not have been the prettiest Arsenal performance but all that mattered was the three points. Once Hull went down to ten men a draw would have been a disaster but scrambling late goals has been something of a speciality for the Gunners this season. They have now scored more goals in the last ten minutes of games than any other team in the Premier League. It is a knack that won them the match at Stoke a couple of weeks ago and they repeated the trick yesterday. Though statistics can be misleading, this one does suggest that this Arsenal team keep trying to the final whistle and have made their own luck by doing so.

Bendtner’s late strike will have hurt Hull but there won’t be too many tears for Phil Brown in North London. He is one of the league’s sorest losers and his behaviour after last season’s clash at Ashburton Grove won’t be forgotten in a hurry. More importantly though, it will have boosted Arsenal’s morale and belief as the run-in to the end of the season begins in earnest.

In his post-match interview for the BBC the Dane said, “We need to win the rest of our games so we can reach our targets.” Some might view this as the usual sort of waffle that gets talked in most post-match interviews but there was something about the matter-of-fact way that he made the comment that suggested that this was more than a TV-friendly platitude. It sounded like this has now become an accepted fact amongst the Arsenal players and they are genuinely thinking in these terms - that nothing less than victory in every game will do. Every team goes out with the intention to win – at least, you would think they do - but there is a big difference between hoping for victory and accepting nothing less.

Certainly, over the past few matches there has been a palpable positive shift in the overall attitude of the team. They look focussed, full of concentration and like they really mean business. It seems that Arsene Wenger really has got their minds in the right place at this critical time of the campaign. They might not have been at their best yesterday but they refused to be denied. If they can keep that going until the end of the season, then who knows what they might achieve?

Its already a miracle we are still in the race. This injury-wrecked team deserves some divine blessings for their efforts. Just like 1989... Magic could be upon us. Only this time, with the CL double? O_O (Sol Campbell winner in the final)

Frankly, the performance had me tearing my hair out. It seemed to me the players just kept lethargically passing on the edge of the area with no ambition to shoot. To Denilson's credit he had the guts to do just that and that's what created the winner.

And Wenger continues to perplex me with not starting Walcott, despite Eboue's fine form. Although an in-form Walcott is an effective super-sub, not starting him may very well destroy all the momentum he has been gaining since the Burnley game. Perhaps he could've used Eboue in defensive midfield given how Denilson was, from my perspective at least, regularly over-powered in that area? With Song returning and all players fit, I suppose it's an either-or situation with Walcott and Eboue, unless the latter is deemed in superior form to Sagna at right-back.

Still, despite all my nitpicking the team just won a very tough fixture after a very congested week. Onwards!

Well said David.Match has been completely summarized in your article. I would like to give credit to Dane for striking a handful and much needed goals.I personally dont like Dane much as he doesn't do much with ball, slows the pace of the game with which Arsenal play, only thing I like about him is his positioning, he is always present from where goals can be scored easily.I would like to give more credit to diminutive Russian for increasing the fluidity on the left wing. if you ignore the horribles misses he has made in last few games, his game has been superb, he is composed, fast and knows what he wants to do.Now all we can do is win remaining 8 games and hope Manchester would drop points against Loserpool, Chelsea, Mancity(unlikely) and Chelsea(draw) would drop points against Villa, Loserpool, Manchester United. In short we winning silverware is possible if we win rest of our games( I know Manchit Spurs would not be easy but possible) and Loserpool get the shit out of the rest.

All that matters now is three points. Every Arsenal fan will only want that. And this win illustrates the self belief that drives the team keep trying till the last minute. However it does not hide the fact that the players have been sleeping for large period of the game. They were lethargic, completely lost focus afer the first goal and were chasing butterflies even when Hull was reduced to 10 men. Yes, there were rough tackles and they stood strong, but there were too many misplaced passes. And I do not think that leaving it late to win the match can be useful knack nor a strategy anyway. The report and many others have obviously masked the ineffective performance by Arsenal in this match. Yes, champions are those who win even on their off day. But we all know that in this crucial title run in, they cannot afford to have off days till the last match of the season. I think we were lucky and thanks to an Arsenal fan in the name of Boaz Myhill, we were spared of an embarrassing weekend.

C'mon you Gunners: we BELIEVE!

i agree it was not the best of arsenal on display but they got the right result which is all that matters. as for the title i think it will come down to two games man city and spurs if arsenal can win both then they have a good chance, not forgetting they gave a two goal lead up to west ham but this arsenal has now developed a stronger mind set i do not see them doing that again.

Dave. That Bendtner goal to me was like the hand of Esau but the voice of Jacob analogy. He may have nicked it in, yes, but I give it all to that superb Denilson shot. And it underlines what I always say on this blog. These lads have to keep shooting. They have got beautiful passes, but these shots will always create better chances especially against stubborn opponents. I see them at the top.

The team is beginning to show some grit, which is what they need at this particular time. It is better to play ugly and win than to play sexy and lose. The title is still there for the taking

Posted by kenttiple on 03/15/2010

Well said David...with Song n Fabregas back there should be more discipline in that midfield now, Denilson does well too but not as much as Song...really individually all players have thier own weak and strong points, Song will never shoot the ball the way denilson does that sometimes ends up giving us Goals and denilson cant defend or feed the attack the way Song does..also Eboue and Sagna are two diffrent peeps too...so all in all its good that everyone has an impact in the team somehow which is good for us...then to my ever funny Danish striker hes positioning is superb just like Rooneys but pls get those Goals cos sometn tels me dis season league might be decided on Goal diffrence.
I really dont thnk Eboue and walcot can play together i.e if Sagna is in the team too cos i dnt expect Eboue to displace any of the midfielders one of them should always come into the game as effective substitute...Go gunners we are behind you guys

The belief is there, but one thing that might derail Gunners title ambition is goal difference. Both Man U and Chelsea have a better goal difference, as such we need to trash teams like West Ham and Wolves. I honestly belief that Arsenal will win their remaining 8 matches. Spurs are married to us so there will be no problem defeating them away and and Man city are not good away from home. So, Gunners the ball is in your court,as you go for your first EPL title in 6 years.

Posted by AndyE on 03/15/2010

Sure it wasn't the best display, but the ref and the sending off really saw to that. Hull were gifted a goal, and the penalty was their only shot on goal. After the sending off they just packed everyone back to defend the draw.

If the penalty was never awarded, with Boateng sent off Hull would've had to open up.

Plus we had two legitimate penalty decisions turned down. The Boys did well

Posted by ArsenalRulz on 03/15/2010

The end justifies the means .... 3 points are all that matter at this juncture. I would gladly celebrate a win if the opposition scored an own goal and we didn't have a single shot on target and we were camped in our own box for 95% of the game. Now granted this is as unlikely as Phil Brown saying something intelligent but you get the point ....

GO GUNNERS!!!
New mantra: One game at a time. Next stop: West Spam

Posted by tinashe on 03/15/2010

I think we just got thru a very difficult period we lacked Song and fabregas who are our midfield mainstays tell me of a team that can still win without its first choice defensive and offensive midfielder we must also remember we are missing Robin and Gallas. When I consider the quality of those that were missing the result is brilliant.

One thing that was impressive was the ability of the team to produce result( three points)despite failing to play well thats how league championships are won!!Last year this team lost playing well now when it plays well it wins and when it plays bad as well.

Posted by Danny Duberstein on 03/15/2010

Please, please, please get Sol Campbell off the pitch. He is a huge liability in the back and even made old man Jan Vennegoor look crafty. There is no doubt that Campbell's presence will ruin our Champions' League dream. Perhaps Nasri Or Diaby could step on his foot during training or something to get him onto the injury list.

Posted by Fritz Alfred on 03/15/2010

The penalty should never have been due to the off sides. If you play Eboue againt the weaker teams, it should be at right back instead of Sagna with Theo since Hull were never going to create any chances anyway. Then Arsene subs Nasri out for Eduardo despite the fact that Arshavin was in horrible form. kudo's to the Gunners for not giving up and on to Glory!

Posted by titansgunner12thman on 03/15/2010

Eboue has been in fine form lately. He needs more games. He has more effect on the game than either Sagna or Walcott. As far as Walcott goes, Wenger is using him just right- for his speed. He has no other dimension to his game. He is not an Arsenal starter. I would place Nasri, Rosicky and Eboue in front of him. Untill he adds to his game, he is no more than the starting RW backup.
Bendtner is still pretty much garbage, although his goals are making me take notice. If scores a few more consistently I can give him credit, but 2 weeks of good play is certainly not enough considering how long we have waited for him to show up and knowing he has had periods in his play like this before. I applaud him for his recent form but still reserve judgement.
Hopefully Cesc comes back and helps us play a little more fluidly from the center of the park. Our defense is still a worry, although Campbell is big and strong and gives a physical presence we haven't had.

After the Liverpool game, I predicted that if Arsenal managed 8 consecutive wins from that point, we would be champions. Hull City makes in 4 on the trot. Go Gunners! I want to circle back to the club's 6-month financial results. I posted last fall that blowing big money chasing "stars" in an inflated transfer market would only mortgage the future to Arsenal's detriment. The 6-month profit is a key outcome. Pressures are building on the financial administration of the G14 especially. FIFA and UEFA will ring in changes. Sound financial management at Arsenal continues to put us at an excellent medium-term competitive advantage, which must be the objective of the stewards of this great club. Want to buy short-term gain? - go join the Pompey fan club! So I think the most significant development of this season has been Stan Kroenke's moves. Is this in club's best long-term interest? I don't know. I invite Mr. Young to write an article here and start a debate crucial to all Gunner fans.

This performance can be described as shear determination to win. Despite some simple mistakes with the passing, the team was one and everyone of them performed with their heart in the pitch.Keep it up boys. I would rather note that as much as Sol's precence is good for defence, he still lacks confidance. He can misplace a pass without any preasure on him. I thought we got the problem of first balls but sol is begining to let the ball bounce as the oponent pounces on the loose ball.
winning the BPL is possible if we keep on suprissing the opponet as Danielson did. It resulted is the keeper parrying the ball since he expected Dan to pass. Whenever Theo is in the pitch and racing accross, someone should just race towards goal as the crosses are so sweet but no one to tap them in. I will be happy with Arsenal getting all the 8 games in the bag.
Arsen is the best coach given his situation with the team injuries. Furgie keep on buying games. Fullham played like drunkards.

Arsenal go till the final whistle of the season
OYEEEEEEEEE

A great show of grit and determination. We will run the table and fix that goal difference. Looking for Pool to show some heart and take some points off those scrubs ahead of us. AV took 4 points from United, why not from Chelsea too. City beat Chelsea at the Bridge why not ManU at Old Trafford, as well. And Chelsea&ManU still have to play each other too! It all adds up to a Gunner title! Come on you Gunners!

arsenal continues to win these grind it out type of games, the last few years these were the ones we would lose and not show that mental toughness. they have really grown up this year and will only get better.

Posted by Partho Rahman on 03/16/2010

It hurts me to see my GUNNERS play ugly.

It shakes up the very basic pillar of supporting Arsenal, the whole philosophy of playing the beautiful game in the Arsenal way.

But hey, at this point in the season where we are breathing down the necks of Merchandiser Knitwits and the Pensioners -- I WILL TAKE IT. :)

IN ARSENE WE TRUST [The "thugs" from a city called Madrid, are really after him after losing in CL, and no matter what everyone says, these "thugs" seem to have a way of getting what they want(CR9 Anyone?). So watch out, this just might be Arsene's last season with us]

GO GUNNERS

Posted by JK on 03/16/2010

It will be easier for us to win now. im hoping for a draw between united and chelsea. if that happens and our good friends in the table help us, we could be on course for a famous title win. I also could see arsenal set for a huge rivalry with chelsea in the futture. manu's debts, along with liver pool are, if im accurate, 1 billion euros. if the economy takes a plunge, these 2 clubs might end up like portsmouth.

Posted by Kevin on 03/16/2010

Was a great win.... sloppy but definately great. It would be an amazing turn to win 13 games straight and take the title away after being written off 3 different times this season. Does anyone know what the record is for consecutive wins in a season? West Ham is next. One game at a time! For Aaron! For Arsenal!!!!

Posted by laoanywhere on 03/17/2010

I hope Asernal do better on clashing with Westham. Just focus on next game, fogot the passed game. Sure, ManU and Pool will share one point or Pool could take clear 3 for Fourth place.

Posted by Steven Chong on 03/19/2010

Boatang's sending off actually makes it tougher for Arsenal to score the second goal. As the Hull defence actually practically pinned themselves in front of goal.

The breakthrough only came when Walcott came on mid way through the second half. The increasing minutes had a telling effect on the Hull players to keep up with Arsenal.

In the past, Arsenal could easily had lost 2 points but this season the team is begining to show the maturity required to win titles.

Hopefully, with the relatively easier fixtures ahead, Arsenal should be capable of winning the Premier League Title.

I expect both Chelsea and Manchester United to drop points in their remaining fixtures (4-6 points) but Arsenal cannot afford to lose any of their remaining games and must at least win 7 of their remaining 8 games. Arsenal must also catch up with the goal difference. An emphactic win over West Ham this weekend will only help their course.

To David Young,

I have observed that Arsenal fraternity is taking seriously what fans say in this blog. It has been paying dividends as the team keeps on correcting the mistakes we point out and improves tremendously.
May be you can initiate a discussion on the Arsenal Baca game so that the fans can make comments which i trust can really inspire our players.
But we still trust in AW that he will be able to make the right game plan to beat Baca however good they are.

Take care all Arsenal fans as we wait to celebrate at the end of the season.

Long live Arsenal, long live Arsen.

Posted by Perry S on 03/20/2010

Have to agree with Danny up there about Sol. I think he should be playing off the bench to provide strength when we need it, but otherwise he seems to be a liability. AW really has put some faith in him, he needs to prove himself on the pitch now. He looks tired and fatigued all too often (can't blame him with his age), but with that said, that should be a warning for Arsene to sit him maybe every other match? It worries me to a large extent that he may play in against Barca in the near future...

I am happy that Arsenal are finding ways to win, but I am still concerned that they over complicate things in front of goal. It’s clear they have an abundance of chances, yet seem to put away a fraction of them. I am happy Bendtner is beginning to score, but against stiffer competition, chances in front of goal will be scarce; so you can’t afford to have 5-6 sitters & not capitalise. Arsenal still do not finish off teams early. They have a great chance this year of doing something special. Arsenal were mauled home & away against the big two & my expectations were reduced after those defeats. They don’t match up well against Chelsea & Man. Utd. When you reflect on the performance Lescott (Man. City) put in twice against Drogba, it just makes you realise what Arsenal are lacking, & how opponents will continue to take advantage. Maybe Sol Campbell’s experience & physical presence can make up for it. Alvira Khan, Florida Atlantic University, FAU Boca Raton Alumna.
