Arsenal

In the absence of Cesc Fabregas, Arsenal swept aside Porto with a five-goal victory to advance to the quarter-finals of the Champions League. It was a wonderfully determined performance by the Gunners, the highlight of which was a hat-trick from Nicklas Bendtner who made amends for his striking horror show against Burnley at the weekend.

Samir Nasri scored the goal of the night, finishing a mazy run in the box that left Porto defenders in his wake with a rifling shot into the far corner of the net. Emmanuel Eboue also got on the scoresheet by rounding the keeper at the end of a thrilling breakaway.

You have to admire the way Bendtner bounced back. Some of the criticism he received from the media after the Burnley match was completely over the top to the extent that by yesterday morning BBC Radio Five Live reported that Arsene Wenger was keeping faith with his young striker after he had missed "six open goals" on Saturday.

I don’t know about you but my definition of an open goal is quite literal - there is no opposition player between the striker and the goal and all he has to do is place the ball into the empty net. As bad as the Dane’s misses were on Saturday to report he squandered half a dozen open-goal opportunities was a scandalous and grossly exaggerated distortion of the truth that does the player no favours at all.

As I reported in my last post, he received a rousing ovation from the Ashburton Grove fans when he was subbed off on Saturday and he repaid their faith with interest. The first goal saw him react quicker than the Porto defence to a loose ball. The second was a tap-in and the third was a late penalty. Some might argue they were “easy chances” but, being under such scrutiny and pressure, I don’t think anything was going to be completely straight-forward for him last night.

Any psychological hangover he might have had from the weekend was not in evidence though as he did the job that Arsenal needed him to do in what was a hugely important match - he got into the right positions and converted his chances as they came along. His contribution to the overall team effort was also worthy of note. He won countless headers during the evening and involved himself in plenty of link-up play.

The challenge for him now is to go on and produce performances like this time after time. He will not score hat-tricks in every match but neither will he be as profligate as he was against Burnley. His response to his weekend nightmare was swift and convincing. He now needs to move on, get his head down and concentrate on producing consistent displays.

With the captain injured, Samir Nasri also stepped up to the plate in the way that we hoped he would. He showed plenty of industry in the heart of midfield and his passing was efficient and effective. For too long Cesc has had to take the sole responsibility for making the midfield tick so it is good news that Nasri is now starting to show signs of being a more-than-able deputy. Elsewhere, the full return of Andrey Arshavin added to Arsenal’s offensive threat. Although not a scorer, he was involved in the creation of the three of the goals and troubled the Porto defence all evening.

It has to be said that the overall attacking performance was excellent last night. The team seemed to be patient, focussed and concentrated. If there had to be one criticism of the display it was that the defence did look ragged at times. Though Porto were only able to mount sporadic periods of pressure and rarely got as far as forcing a save out of Manuel Almunia, there were still a few heart-attack moments at the back and the home support could only rest easy once the fourth goal had gone in at the other end. Despite this, history will show that the team kept a clean sheet and they should be applauded for that. However, they will have to tighten things up defensively in the next round when they will inevitably be paired with stronger opposition than the Portuguese side.

Still, last night was not a night for picking holes in the performance. If you can’t sit back and enjoy a 5-0 home victory in the Champions League then you might as well give up being a football fan. The players cannot spend too long basking in their victory though as they have to prepare for a trip to Hull City on Saturday in the Premier League. It is always tricky going away to teams who are battling relegation and the Gunners’ attitude will have to be absolutely spot-on. Add to this the previous history between the two clubs concerning various incidents that have taken place both on and off the pitch and it is match where Arsene Wenger is going to have to make sure the players carry out their task with cold-blooded professionalism.

Whilst we wait and hope for Chelsea and Manchester United to drop further points, the Arsenal players have to uphold their end of the deal by continuing win games and maintain pressure at the top. The trip to Hull could be an awkward one but it is exactly the sort of match the team need to be taking the full three points from if they are going to have a realistic chance of being involved in the shake-up come May.

Great win for the boys, with Cesc out they needed to show that they could do it, even if it was only so Cesc himself knew that it was not a one man team. Arshavin was sublime, when he is given space to run at defenders he is almost unplayable. His feet are so fast and tricky, it is just a shame he didnt score!
Bendtner is improving, albeit slowly, but for a young big striker he shows massive potential. His positional sense is excellent and he works pretty hard for a big man, all he needs to do is improve his conversion rate and accuracy. With the amount of chances he gets due to his timing and positioning the goals will flow once he becomes more accurate.
Overall they looked good but as you said the defense is still a worry. The defensive midfielders still need to prevent the counter attacks and we lose possession far to much in bad positions, teams like Barca almost NEVER lose the ball at the back and we need to do the same. Otherwise bravo!

Agree that Bendtner was wasteful against Burnley, although he did redeem himself in the match against Porto. I'm sure it restore some confidence back not only to himself, but also to Wenger and the Arsenal fans.

Actually in my personal opinion, I do feel that if Bendtner continue to improve and of course stay away from those long term injuries, he is just what Arsenal need, which is a big central striker to put away all those chances created by his fellow teammates. I personally feel that Arsenal has been lacking this type of striker for a long time since the era of Alan Smith and Ian Wright.

Hope Bendtner continue to work hard, improve, and stay away from long term injury.

Go Gunners Go.

Personally, the three games that terrify me the most in the league are those away to Hull, Birmingham and Tottenham. If we can get wins from those we have a fantastic chance.

The one tactical question mark for me was Wenger not starting with Walcott. Was it for tactical purposes, rotation purposes, or perhaps fitness purposes? Either way, it worked, but I hope Wenger will use Walcott consistently from now till the final hurdle, he needs a good run of games to impose himself.

The defense did look somewhat ragged but Vermalean made some OUTSTANDING interceptions. We could so easily have pressed the self-destruct button early in the second half with all that sloppy passing and positioning. The team IS learning though: they're finally having players cover the posts during corners!

yesterday was a good result for the team and to all the gooner's.nasri was in sensational form.it was night to watch and just to remind all those ....... that we are really serious about silverware this season.

lastly, goodluck to my team for the rest of the game.

@ Sever,
maybe the reason AW didnt play theo is that he expected porto to sit deep and defend their one goal advantage. If a team parks the bus, players who rely on their pace cant do too much. Although as it turned out, Porto played three upfront hoping to get an away goal.

Posted by ifeanyi udemezue on 03/10/2010

A wonderful performance by Arsenal. The worrying issue is whether they will be able to find consistency. The other is their ability to keep things tight at the back. Vermaleen was excellent. So too was Campbell though he showed some signs of rustiness on some occasions when he lost possession. The game against Hull will be predictably tricky. The Arsenal boys must be ready to keep their ffet on the ground and expect a physical game. The champions and English leagues titles are within reach. They are there for the taking.

with what happened at the emirates stadium last night arsenal has once again shown that it is the master in the passing game.I duff my hat for Arsen wenger..for a manager that did not buy any big name player since the exit of Patrick vierra, kolo toure, adebayo etc but is still relevant on all major competitions is a plus to the manager...when patrick vierra left there was Fabregas and now Nasri is ready to replace fabregas...football is about development of the young and unknown players and not buying big names...I will always support Arsen wengers philosophy.CONGRATULATIONS ALL GUNNERS.

It was a fantastic game against Porto but there is need for improvement in the defence

Posted by Rona on 03/10/2010

I couldnt ask for more after the ninety minutes, having been mocked by opposition fans before kick off it was a perfect way of keeping them silent for some time.
So congs Arsenal,we need a replica of this performance up to the last match of the season.

Posted by kenttiple on 03/10/2010

Great win what more can we fans ask for...we need these boys to do this week in week out, Now away to hull..i fear this game but if we can play our normal style we will definately outclass them and scoop three maximum points...i realy feel this season belongs to Arsenal in the prem-league...in Arsen I TRUST... Go Gunners

Outstanding job by the gunners!

But no one seems to give credit to, who i thought made the difference, Andrey Arshavin. he created three of the goals. as always beautiful passes and the little Russian's twinkle toes ran the defense to ruins. I think the Russian's contribution within the mid-field made up for the loss of Cesc. And not to mention the shots he should have scored..

overall best team performance of the season IMO.

Posted by Ogera on 03/10/2010

My hope is that the win does not go into their heads, because we need their feet firmly on the ground for the next game, away to Hull. Otherwise, that was a night to remember. GO, ARSENAL GO, SCORE, ARSENAL SCORE, WIN, ARSENAL WIN.

Posted by D1V5 on 03/10/2010

The team was just outstanding during the night. I hope this win provides the players with more motivation and self-belief.

Let's just give the team our full support and no doubt they won't let us down.

ARSENAL for LIFE!!!

A season in England is longer than one Champions League match. Bendtner has been wanting in critical matches - minus injury. I fear this will go down as performance that stopped ythe need tp strengthen the swuas.

Posted by David Fitch on 03/11/2010

A great game arsenal going forward with lots of space there nothing better,in defense still shaky have to mention sol he may have lost his speed but not his brain hope the young arsenal defenders learn that position and reading the game are just as important as speed. they did have a poor 15 minutes after half time but apart from this Pôrto were not really in the game, the only fear now is they have no cl hangover when they go to hull as there has been in the past if they want to be in a chance of winning the title they must keep on getting the points every week.

Posted by William Senfuma on 03/11/2010

I have always wondered wether Song is better in holding rather than attacking midfield. In holding midfiled, he appears to expose the centre backs too much as if compared to Denilson. The other issue is about wether arsenal currently has a true winger. Talk of Walcott, Rosicky, Nasir, Arshavin, and you will be talking of central attacking midfielders the way i see things. Otherwise, the team seems to be progrssing well!

Posted by Chinenye on 03/11/2010

No club like Arsenal, they are just too good for my liking.

Posted by aidid on 03/11/2010

the arsenal keep on going stronger. but it all depends on several key player. if they r not on the par, then the team can't perform well... i do believe arsenal need another three good signing which is a defender, a defensive midfielder and a goalkeeper. but still overall, its still a good performance by the arsenal team. keep on the good job guys. we, the arsenal fans always behind you.

Posted by Shad on 03/11/2010

Good win, just need to keep our feet on the ground and take a game at a time.
The team looks hungry, and if they work on a few defensive lapses here and there, they should be a match for anyone.

Posted by sam on 03/11/2010

I think T. Vermalean was excellent. Sol Campbell looked sometimes out of sorts in the first half. A meeting with Man utd or Chelsea in the next round would be a real test, wouldn't mind Barca too. Overall it was a great perfomance from the lads. Hull awaits!

Go Gunners!

Posted by Godfrey on 03/11/2010

Interesting about Song. He appears more suited for attacking than holding midfielder. The control and passing of the ball in the center is excellent. Very deadly passes in the opponents box. On a negative side, his surges upfront expose the defenders.

Posted by mmoloki on 03/11/2010

a deserved win for arsenal............big ups to them. i still dont thimk they can go all the way though.

Posted by Sammy on 03/11/2010

Hull City have no option, they will have to lose this match. One way or another Arsenal must win this match even with the smallest of the margins, we have to take three points.Let us all put Porto Performance behind us, Hull City must be humbled.

Posted by SwitGunner on 03/11/2010

We need to keep Nasri in his best position. Hence we can either rotate the playmaker or have a 5-man midfieid of Arshavin or Rosicky-Nasri or Ramsey-Song-Fabregas-Walcott or Denilson. Knowing Arsene, he may even put a right footer on the left and vice-versa. Having 2 playmaker would make the team have 2 brains and 2 engines to move more intelligently and aggressively.

Quietly hoping for EPL & CL trophies going to the Emirates.

Posted by evans michael on 03/11/2010

well, a big applauds for the young stars. with that nite's game, our confidence of winning a silverware this season is back. such an outstanding performance with cesc being ruled out. well i will jst urge us to keep pressing and never relent until we achieve our goal. lay off campbell, he's best defender in epl

Posted by pius kasela on 03/13/2010

Am wishing the gunners gooluck this season,
its Pius from Tanzania

Posted by David Mubarak on 03/14/2010

Am a gunner 4 life.Although Wenger made no mid-season signings the boys are however good. But i suggest they also need to add strenght to their skills inorder to clinch at least a title this season. However, Melo of juve can bring strenght to midfield, ivanovic of chelsea can bring agility to defense and fabiano of sevilla can partner with Vanpersie to bring clinical finishes for next season.

Posted by suman on 03/20/2010

I always have a feeling that Rosicky is a great factor in Arsenal's progress. If he is in his best form he is as good as Messi. Holding midfield is the weak link.

Posted by Arshavin Cesch on 03/20/2010

There is a question wenger should answer. why is is that he can't substitute bendtner for anybody after is nasty mnisses. is that the way he is going to face FCB.

If so then thats for sure that bendtner cant score.

Posted by yau masudi on 03/20/2010

very well, arsenal and good football are inseparable, they play a football the way it should, but one thing is certain u need to fully utilize your chances in other to win champions league, the chances that N Benthner squandered can not be tolerated in champions leaque more especially now that the going into quater finals of th leaque.

Posted by gerhard hamukwaya on 05/05/2010

the oly team on my heartnis arsenal that play most favourable footbal, bt the most dissapping moment is the scorig problem. we need a striker that can score goals, not betner
