"We know that when you go to Porto you need a solid defensive performance". So said Arsene Wenger following last week's victory over Liverpool. What we actually got was a horror show of a performance from Lukasz Fabianski that saw the Gunners go down 2-1 in a match that they really ought to have taken a result away from.
In the 24 hours since the final whistle Porto's goals have been shown innumerable times on the television and they don’t get any easier to watch with each viewing. The first saw Gael Clichy skinned on the right wing and Fabianski, with no one near him and caught in a bad position, fumble the resultant cross into the net. The second was a comedy of errors between Sol Campbell and the hapless Polish keeper, except there really wasn't anything remotely funny about it.
The incident that led to the freekick was only one half of the story. Sol Campbell may have confused the young goalkeeper by touching it back to him but if there was any doubt in his mind Fabianski should have just put his foot through the ball and cleared it. His error was then compounded by simply handing the ball back to the referee to allow Porto to take a quick freekick. A more switched-on keeper would have held the ball until his defence got back and taken a yellow card for it if necessary. It would be kind to say that his handling of the situation was naïve and inexperienced. More accurately, it was incompetent and unprofessional.

The sad thing is that one could hardly call last night’s calamities a one-off. It has been a generally held opinion on this page over the past couple years that Fabianski is a decent instinctive shot-stopper. However, the moment he has to think about his game, he is left wanting time and again. He flaps, he panics, his decision-making is usually rash and, more often than not, dreadful. Last night brought into sharp focus the flaws in his make up that seem to surface match after match after match and he fails to instil much confidence when coming in to replace Manuel Almunia.
In his post-match interview, Arsene Wenger refused to criticise his goalkeeper and instead turned his attentions to the referee for allowing the second goal to stand. Rarely though has the manager looked less authoritative in his criticism. Porto were guilty of nothing more than quick thinking and exploiting a dozing Arsenal defence. It was the sort of thing that Thierry Henry had the presence of mind to try on regular occasions in the past. There were no complaints from Arsenal quarters then and so there can be very little to moan about in this instance. At least, Cesc Fabregas had the honesty to admit that both goals were due to schoolboy errors.
In fairness to Wenger, he has always devoutly refused to censure his players in public. When he tells an interviewer that he hasn’t seen an incident, what he really means is: "I don’t want to talk about that". Similarly, one senses his slating of the match referee was more a smokescreen in order to divert attention away from Fabianski’s performance. Privately though, the manager must surely be as irritated as most fans are with the two moments of ineptitude that cost the Gunners the chance of coming away with a more creditable first-leg result.
On the brighter side though, despite the annoyance at the manner of the defeat, there is still plenty to be optimistic about for the second leg. Arsenal weren’t at their best all over the pitch last night but still looked more than a match for Porto. Take the ruinous goalkeeping errors out of the equation and the Gunners looked good value to take at least a draw, and so they can approach the return leg at Ashburton Grove with a certain amount of confidence that they will be able overturn the deficit.
To do so though, they will have to ensure they defend far better and try to control the tempo of the match a lot more effectively. Last night, the game was an end-to-end affair for virtually the entire ninety minutes. There was talk from the manager about the team taking a more conservative approach away from home in this tie but there was little evidence of that. The match was far too open. It might have been a good one for the neutrals to watch but wasn’t one for purists or Arsenal fans.
In the wake of Fabianski’s disastrous night, the debate about the goalkeeping situation at the club has heated up again. At the start of the season, there was not much talk about it being a particular weakness of the squad but as the season got underway so did the concerns about that position in the team and the discussion has not stopped since.
Manuel Almunia has taken plenty of criticism this season and his extended absence in the early part of the campaign did raise some anxieties that his head might not be in the right place to handle the task. With Fabianski then injured, Vito Mannone stepped in. He covered himself in glory with a string of important saves that helped notch a hard-fought victory at Craven Cottage against Fulham. He then systematically undid all his good work in subsequent games when errors that exposed his inexperience cost several goals. Almunia came back and has maintained his place despite worries about his form. The few appearances that Fabianski has made have shown little to suggest that he is ready to take the Spaniard’s place as first-choice keeper.
With the transfer window shut now until the summer, Arsene Wenger and Arsenal supporters are just going to have to make the best of what they have got until May. For my money, Almunia is still the best option as neither Fabianski nor Mannone inspire much confidence and lack the individual authority and composure to push themselves into the number one slot. Some might see the Spaniard as the best of a bad job but there is not much in the way of an alternative at the moment.
It will be interesting to see what the manager does do in the summer though and which of his goalkeepers he decides to keep faith with. He will, of course, have the option of buying a new recruit but there is another alternative. Wojciech Szczesny who is currently on loan at Brentford has been earning himself rave reviews and has endeared himself to the fans there. On the evidence of his performances over in West London this season, he is as entitled to the same sort of chances that have been given to Mannone and Fabianski when he returns to Arsenal.
After watching last night’s episode, it was hard not to think back to Arsenal’s run to the Champions League Final in 2006 and recall what a massive part Jens Lehmann played in getting them there. He was superb in every round and his penalty save in the semi-final against Villareal was as important as any of the goals scored en route. It was a tragedy for him that he was sent off so early in the final after being drawn into bringing down Samuel E’Eto as the last man. That did not stop him from being named goalkeeper of the tournament after not conceding a goal in over 800 minutes of football and helping the Gunners break a record for consecutive clean sheets in the Champions League.
Almunia, Fabianski and Mannone need to look to that level of performance, professionalism and, sometimes, gamesmanship to see what it takes from a goalkeeping point of view to move the club to the brink of a truly major achievement.

Great article David and so true.I don`t expect Arsenal to take any silver this year but what I would like to see is better coordination for 90 minutes and consistant pressure playing mostly in the opponents half and being alert enough to avert a counter attack. This plus defence against sets pieces has been a problem all season and has yet to be rectified.

Misery, jokery doo daa....schoolboy mistake in the men world of football.. it is already enough sadness on the overall on field performance now it is gol keeper blunder..how long it take for Wenger to realises this ..beat me.., A good team is a blend of young and experienced player..it is simple as that...discover the weakness cover the hole...for gud sake if nescesarry buy quality player..trow out the philosophy crap...dont wait untill the ship sank..

to concentrate on the goalkeeper mistake is hiding the fact that the arsenal goal had much more attempts on it than portos; this for me is much more concern that in the last four games arsenal have not scored much at all and a lot of the time its been defenders scoring if this team wants to proceed in the CL then someone must start to get the goals because they proved this season they cannot defend. also there passing game is not working like it should to many passes going astray which porto fed on with there counter attack game also every lose ball seemed to be picked up by a porto player at one time i thought they had more players on the field.arsenal cannot rely on portos poor away form to win the next leg-they will have to score at least two more than them or i am afraid they will be knocked out at this stage.

Very true.
The big question is if Wenger decides to replace Almunia for the coming season. However, I can't see us buying a 'worldclass' keeper for a ridiculous amount of money. Looking at the goalkeepers available at the club and the comments from our manager, it looks more likely that Fabianski, Manonne and Chesney [sic!] gonna battle it out. So nothing stable there, but probably Wenger's patience and faith.
It's frustrating to see appearantly more and more individuals at our club being critized (prob. rightly so) for being not professional or even skilled enough at this level. Fabianski has now ultimately joined the rank with the likes of Walcott, Denilson, Clichy, Silvestre and Eduardo.

We are used to the chronic self-destructive defensive errors now, but despite this I felt Sol Campbell a fairly good game.
The game was so end to end because our midfield was totally open, which I suspected would be the scenario when I saw Denilson played as the defensive midfielder (It wouldn't really be fair to place all the blame on him though).
What is also a chronic weakness is this INFURIATING tendency for players to pass on the edge of the box when they can just shoot. For the love of God why didn't they shoot when they were piling on the pressure in the last 5 minutes? I almost laughed when Diaby gave that cheeky side pass when he had a clear sight of goal towards the end.
On the brighter side of things Walcott and Eboue both looked reinvigorated when they came on, particularly the former, who showed skill, speed AND defensive graft. Hopefully it's a sign of things to come.

The jokebook is filled very quickly by Arsenal defenders and keepers. Although the complete focus is on the goalkeeping situation with the latest addition of Fabianski double entries, I think the entire defensive situation is one that is chaotic. Both Clichy's and Sol's role in both errors should not be discounted. Particularly, as an experienced defender, Sol should have done better in the second goal situation. Not forgetting how the entire defence was in disarray in both Man U and Chelsea games, confidence will be rock bottom following the recent events. It will be a mammoth task to return top class performances, which is essential if we hang on to any hopes of progressing further. I always feel that a solid defence can only be formed with the right talent and managerial emphasis on defence, both of which are severly lacking in the team. We do not have much choice with both. It is entirely up to the team to pick themselves up and motivate themselves, while Arsene finds new excuses.

I've doubt arsenal performance this in any tournaments. Always flip-flop performance. Wenger, please review ur team to beat a powerful team in any tournaments. Trained young player can't be a priority in same time to win any big tournament.

Experts say that a "Great" keeper is someone who forces an unfair result by his performance. But unlike Fabianski, the result favors the team that the "Great" keeper is playing for. For example, Edwin van de Sar's performance for United against Milan.
As as Arsenal fan for last 20 or so years, I can't remember a time when we won any tournament without a good keeper. Remember the names Seaman, Lehman ... ?
Great Arsene has a lot of thinking to do during the summer break I reckon. Stop gap solutions are simply not holding up under pressure these days. Its time for an overhaul Arsene.
Go Gunners.
In Arsene We Trust.

there were some positives from the game though i accept that there need to be significant overhauled in all areas, defence, midfield and upfront.
Bentner presence upfront was very noticable despite the fact that he was the only centraL Forward. Sol gave a generally decent performance. Rosicky started well but lose it afterward. Walcott seems to be getting his form and Diaby was ok except for the fact that he refused to take shots on goal.
If Mr. Wenger can acquire two to three players during the summer then we will be able to get silverware but for this season we must forget about it. we must learn from this season, make the necessary adjustment and then we will lift silverware.

I think Fabianski is still a long way to being the gunner's no. 1 goalkeeper. If Almunia don't improve, I think Arsene Wenger will have to spend a bit to get a much better goalkeeper for the next season.

Fabianski's performance has been nothing short of 'very poor',Almunia's is not even better with all his experience, while Mannone lack the experience to instill confidence. What I expect Wenger to do before the beginning of next season is to let Amunia & Fabianski go (even if for free),then buy either Jaaskelainen or Leed United goalkeeper(or both). To have one poor keeper is bad enough, not to talk of two!
As for Clichy, since his return from injury he keep making mistakes after mistakes. From the Bolton's match to Porto,he has been very poor defending, & even worse going forward. It will be fair to give Traore some playing time as he did fairly well in his last game.
I sincerely hope Weneger is watching these games objectively with a view to strenghtening these weak links by the summer, otherwise we will be going from one season to another with nothing to show.

Good stuff David.Back to the drawing board my dear prof. If you ask me, we need a goal keeper, a central defender, a defensive midfielder and a striker in addition to ensuring that Cesc stays at all cost. Gallas is aging and may not do much. I won't like to be panic about Clichy. He needs to work hard to rediscover himself.Overall, Sol had a good game against Porto. Prof should off load Denilson and Walcott for poor productivity. They have been first team players for 2 years or more, yet no improvement.
This Arsenal team cannot win anything if Wenger continues to believe in these boys. He loses the plot if that continues. Wenger should please put his thinking cap on.This heartache must stop.

Wenger is deluded to think that this crop of talented, featherweight kids will win us anything. On my watch AW's time is up. 5 yrs of mediocrity os too much for a club of Arsenal's stature. if we are indeed rebuilding, why can't we start with a manager who is more ambitious on winning on the pitch rather than balancing accounts?! The team looks clueless, we have no GKs, CBs on the edge of injury and no striker. Poor foresight by the gaffer. He needs a rest.

Mr Wenger's Team. Thats what i call it. The manager seems to forget that the club has fans and supporters that have to be rewarded after 5 years. Wenger just wants to satisfy himself and its a pity we can't do anything about it from the stands and through our TV sets.
Why has this man stubbornly insisted on not beefing this team up.
We need 2 imposing, experienced and less injury prone centre forwards, but the Prof says no, i must prove that this thin team can do something great. We need an experienced defensive midfield player but the boss says no i'll rather go with my incomplete Song and Dennilson. To me, Song is just too clumsy for Arsenal's style of play and Dennilson still needs some bone.
Defensively, Clichy and Sagna have been disasters dis season but they have to work hard. At times like this, able deputies would have been the answer before those 2 get their act right.
Ultimately, Wenger does not pay enough attention to defence and plays thesame style no matter the opposition.

My village team keeper and striker wuld have done better than Fabianski and Bendtner. I know so many players of lesser teams watch some of the Arsenal players n wonder how ' ladyluck' favours them
 |
Posted by Timmy Hirschel-Burns on 02/19/2010
You can't just say everyone needs to go. While missing many key players this is the same team that is 6 points off the top of the table with a very easy schedule left. Clichy is just back from injury and naturally will take him time to get back to form. If he never plays again as some suggest he will never get back to top form. There needs to be some strengthening at striker and midfield purely for depth and at keeper, but you can't expect Arsenal to spend a ton of money; they spent 400 million pounds on the stadium. Everyone thought Wenger was wrong to buy Vermaerlen but he is very good. Nobody expected Sagna to be good, he was fantastic. Song came for almost nothing and is one of the best defensive midfielders in the world. Wenger has to be trusted, he will do the right thing
 |
Posted by valenciaisthebest on 02/19/2010
I totally agree with Partho. I feel the only option is to buy another keeper. I personally think we should buy back Seamen because we should of never got rid of him in the first place and he still has years ahead of him unlike Almunia. I also feel we should buy a player like joey barton because he will really fit our style of play and he is totally underrated

the board at AFC dont seem too bothered by the fact they are robbing their own supporters, and as long as we keep paying the amount of money we pay for tickets thats exactly what they are gonner keep doing. these men dont focus on football, they focus on the money AW is making them. why would they say there is money to spend when AW says there isnt, and why would AW be so ready to let loyal supporters down season after season for the sake of a few talentless kids. the answer is they are all a bunch of lyers who make up stories to keep fans watching them, and the only way to make them listen is if we all stopped going to watch rubbish players trying to play football.

I fully agree that titles are won by being defensively solid.Remember how tony adams and co make the the famous back 5 for arsenal and how lehmann concedes the least goal in UCL on the road to the final?
Arsenal have a relatively easier fixture list than Chelsea's and Man Utd so if they are able to avoid conceding 'schoolboy' goals against lesser opponents in EPL i believe they might stand a very good chance at winning the title.
PS:Seamen's too old but i agree with buying joey barton..

But we can beat lesser teams hence a good chance of wining EPL, if chelsea and man u drop points.
yes our keepers are a liability, and we do need another forward as cover for RVP.. Dzeko would fit the bill in my opnion..
we forget we were flying at the start with RVP.. we just need depth!

Excellent article. Fine analysis. We need to get a world-class goalkeeper for number 1, or at least to spar with Manuel for the first slot. That way be have something in the mold of Van Der Sar and Kuszczak at Man U. Then we can loan off or sell Mannone and keep Fabianski for the number 3 spot. That way Arsenal will be living up to its true status. And of course, this is only about the goalkeeping department. About the same thing applies for almost every position of the team. In my opinion only about 3 or 4 field players really qualify to be in the first 11 of a team like Arsenal. Wenger now has absolutely no more excuse. We've been patient enough. He must spend, and I mean spend, or - and this is hard to say - go!

the players were there for that game. wenger should be in a school lab doing some experiments and will come with some new element.why sub rosicky for wallcot who has no idea of where the goal is . eboue is a better player than both sagna bendtner . ask wenger he will say bendtner is only 21yrs so what.we do not need bendtner in the fisrt eleven and sagna who stummers with the ball not knowing what to do all the times should be on bench.song came found sagna bendtner there look at him now.for the keepers i dont know what to say so many mistakes the all need players.fabiaski looks so confused as if he choose wrong position .alumini has scored so many goals this season than the top four keepers.clichy is mentally out.use varmaleen on left back .use gallas sol at center .anyway wenger does not read or this nonsense so for us fans we keep suffering till he goes

We are certainly not perfect yet. Yes it has been a while since the last trophy. It is easy to say buy this and buy that. However, balancing the books and the aspirations is a must unless we want to end up a Leeds or a Pompey. So what if it has been 5 years. Before AW, when how often did we win trophies, being Top 4 and consistently in CL? So, In Arsene I Continue To Trust. In regards to the keeper, I say bring Wojciech Szczesny to be No 2 next season. Give him half of the 38 games. If he display the same awesome performance as he is giving Brentford, I say lets give him a shot at becoming the next Cech. AW trust older keepers due their better ball reading. Then again, who was Fabregas compared to Viera when he won the midfield battle a few years back when Arsenal met Juventus? Speed up Szczesny. I don't know if he will be that good eventually. All I know he seems to have much more confidence than our 1st 3 choices.

I think the challenge with this Arsenal for years now as been Lack of confidence. When they are in control of the game with there slick passing and finesse they do not know how kill the game off and close shop. They keep on wandering like sheep without shepherd then someone commits a mistake and they are behind this pattern as been synonymous with Arsenal's play and it happened again in the Porto game. You might blame Fabianski for the errors but this is not the first time this is happening
Arsene needs to get experienced players in each department of the team to bring confidence and stability to the team.

dont be so passionate (talking to all supporters)fans, AW is still doing a decent job. I dont think that if AW leaves and the likes of mourinho or even ferguson and ancheloti, if being arsenal club managers could guarantee top 4 spot(dont foerget MAN U are under loss and have depts of plenty of millions, that is the club is unstable.Whereas the latter had introduced himself to a complete team which in my point of view dont need even managers to secure troffies(if i get the chance to coach them , i will just tell Terry, Lampard, Ballack and probably all the team "do what you see is right and ill sit watching them only.So keep faith in AW.In Wenger we trust.

AW. Please tell these boys to SHOOT, SHOOT, SHOOT and keep SHOOTING. It's annoying why we have to keep defending our boys everytime when all they need to is imbibed a simple mindset of trying a shot whenever they get near the box. At least, it would greatly neutralize those goals our fumbling keepers keep letting in. Until they grow up. And who says they can't improve?
Then Arshavin is beginning to annoy, with professional selfish play. If Cesc isn't around him, he'd rather kick the ball to the crowd instead to passing to a Walcott or a Vela. How many goals have we missed like that? But that another story.

Good article!
You can't win titles, especially head-to-head, with minus GKs gifting clubs almost a goal a game.
As a former GK in another sport, IMHO inexperience is no excuse. The GKs job is to lead & organize the defense-you take charge because you're the last line of defense and know you can be the difference between victory and defeat. You only need a couple of games to start doing that if you show that you know what you're doing. That's why, as a pro, you spend hours after practice learning the rules, how to read shots, passes, situations etc., watching film. It's not rocket science, it's about work, composure and using your head-shot stopping is only a part of it. Experience helps, but, without the extra work and proper approach, it only goes so far.
Arsenal's 3 GKs this season haven't shown that they have what it takes. Szczesny's shown promise (Shea, too), but they need an experienced older GK-like Buffon, James, etc.-to mentor him and be a stopgap #1 until he's ready.

While I'm not a fan of Almunia but he's the best keeper we got. It's not like we had a chance to buy a new keeper. Oh wait, we did. Well, too late for that.
As for buying Joey Barton, are you guys mad?!? All our French players will riot if he ever comes to Arsenal, since Dabo, the player who was assaulted by Barton was good friends with some of our players. If we need a thug to injury opposing players on the pitch then yes, Barton is our man.
What's with all the Song bashing? He has really step up this season.

In my opinion its all down to inexperience. Fabianski needs to play more games, be it CL or in the EPL, and spend more playing time with the defence so as to develop an understanding.
What happened in Porto is a one-off. I would put it down to miscommunication. Judge him only after more playing time. And even if Arsenal needs to sign new players, the goalkeeping department is not the only one in need of change.

Arsenal needs safe hands at the back someone who stamps his authority in the box and who deal decisively with set pieces and aerial balls hoofed in his area.Someone who commands his defence well. For a striker we need a fox in the box who can put away half chances. Bendtner is a decent lad but his conversion rate is way too low. In tight games we can not afford to make so many missed calls. And please arsenal learn to shoot. Do you want to walk the ball in the net or something? Take a leaf from RVP.

To all those who wants to kick AW out --> How many titles did Arsenal win before AW showed up?
Do you ever think of that? Be realistic people. Arsene Wenger is a prized possesion who keeps faithful to AFC. If let go, Real Madrid or some other big club would snatch him in a flash. Does that tell you something about his worth?
Too many people playing too much PSP where they can just buy/swap any player they want from any league. Just cause you bought the "Perfect" player in a certain position doesn't gurantee that he will perform to his potential. If you ever played "Real" football in your lifetime, you should know that.
Get Real folks. Being a supporter means you don't point fingers the moment you lose a match or your manager doesn't buy your fantasy player.
Go Gunners.

After reading some of the comments from all these so called "fans" of Arsenal, i am lost for words. They all know the solution.
1. Kick Arsene Wenger out
2. Buy new players
Gully, why didn't anyone think of that?
Well don't worry folks. There is a very good chance that Arsene will be leaving for Real Madrid after this season. Go read the ESPNSTAR report. Arsene also makes the number one choice for a few Italian giants as well. Hope you guys sleep well now.
Ok, so how many trophies did you guys win before Arsene Wenger showed up at Arsenal?
Secondly, everyone wants to buy the perfect player who will wave his magic wand and win all the trophies. Well, one question, what makes you think they would want to join a team like Arsenal? Cause after you kick out AW, Arsenal will be just another mid table sitter with all your Cesc and RVPs leaving with Arsene.
Life is beyond your PSP fantasy league. Wake up else quit calling yourself a gooner.

My God!
Another week of "high" hope is on for us again. We have closed the gap between us and MAN.U and just six points behind CHELSEA.
How i pray that this does not end up to be the many hope filled seasons we have had in the past God knows.
Its now eleven matches to go and its time to show true character of champions not pretenders. The queston now is " CAN WE WIN THE REMAINING MATCHES?" If we can nothing can stop us from becoming champions. Unfortunately we are entering into a gamble at this crucial moment of the championship. Slyvestre jus reminds me of Pascal Cygan and if he is to be at the back, am expecting a goal by him into his own net, if not he will give "assists" to our opponents to score against us.
OH GOD WHAT WENT WRONG WITH OUR TEAM. Its hope and hope and unending hope. Its the price we are paying for loving the beauty of football displays as taught by the proffesor to the young lads. It hurts to build hope and keep to live seeing that hope dying in you all time

I am effing sick of hearing so much complaining about Almunia. Where are his major mistakes? He hardly makes them! And he gets to saves that few keepers do.
On a deeper level, he is a nice guy, and I suspect people sense a softness about him. That said, I don't think it's a softness that prevents him from excelling at the highest level (though it might have kept him in the Spanish second league for longer than most EPL keepers would have stayed there. That said, he learned to overcome it. He's the type of player who takes longer to mature). This softness is in him, and I think people sniff it out like dogs, and they pounce.
But truth be told, he's an excellent keeper. I hope he stays and proves everyone wrong in the coming weeks with some glorious saves. Mark my words. He really just might.
That said, his softness might allow all this criticism to eat away at him, regardless of the fact that it was unwarranted in the first place.
Wishing the best for him,

Hi JT.... Almunia performance in doubt... yes, he is good GK but his current performance not helping the team... in fact, it will destroy the team if we still want to depend on him... we need to give space to Fabinski because he got potential to be in 1st eleven. Almunia's era is over (like Lehman also). At one time he hit his best performance and was suggested to be England GK but not now.
We want him to "come back" to his best and then only we can count on him. GK is our last defence and we need to someone that we can rely on.
I bet for Fabianski / Manone because I think they got potential.

as we expect fabianski is young and maybe he nervous for first game at CL....fight with porto..2 bad mistake that a GK should never do..by the way..that may open fabianski eyes..how hard to be a great GK...no way arsenal can get somebody can play like david seaman or lehnman....but vito manone is new young and freash can be tboth of them..cheers for arsenal...

About
Sam Limbert: My retirement as a football player came at the age of 14 due to being rubbish, it's fair to say I was more Kaba Diawara than Thierry Henry, so I turned my focus to writing about the game. I'm a lifelong Arsenal fan and have been lucky enough to watch the team across England and Europe. My favourite Gunner of all time is Dennis Bergkamp, and the 2004 Invincibles is the greatest side I've ever seen in English football. I try to be positive about the Arsenal as it's the hope that keeps us going! Follow me on twitter @SamsMatchReport.
