Midweek away trips in the Champions League often lead to lacklustre performances the following weekend. Saturday lunchtime, Manchester United were humbled by Everton at Goodison Park and, later in the afternoon, the Arsenal made hard work of a somewhat easier assignment at home to Sunderland, eventually seeing off their visitors 2-0.
Though the Gunners dominated possession, it wasn't until the 27th minute that they took the lead when, after a strong run, Emmanuel Eboue danced through the Sunderland defence and presented Nicklas Bendtner with a tap-in. It was just the sort of confidence boost that the young Dane needed as he finds his feet again after a long lay off from injury but it was provided by some fine work by the Ivorian who was Arsenal’s stand-out performer yesterday.
Going into the second half, and despite their territorial advantage, the home team never looked entirely comfortable holding onto their one-goal lead. There were moments when it looked like Sunderland might find their way back into the match and the visitors did have their chances to draw level. The match was put beyond doubt just into injury-time though when Cesc Fabregas was adjudged to have been fouled in the area. The captain slotted home the resultant penalty himself and the three points were safe.

It might not have been the prettiest game to watch, and the Gunners did make heavy weather of it, but a win was a win and it was another three points banked. As much as we all like to watch the team when they are in full flow and at their scintillating best, no points are awarded for artistic interpretation and sometimes victories just have to be ground out. After the disappointment of losing in Porto, the result was just what the team, and the supporters, needed.
The real highlight of yesterday’s display was the individual performance of Emmanuel Eboue and it felt like the culmination of a year of rehabilitation for the Ivory Coast international. Fourteen months ago at Ashburton Grove he came on as a substitute against Wigan Athletic and, after what must have been one of the poorest performances of his career, found himself substituted off later in the match with a chorus of boos ringing in his ears from sections of the home crowd.
There was much debate as to whether those supporters who made their point so vocally were correct to do so, but what most of the media didn’t acknowledge was that Eboue’s performance that day was not a one-off. It was the straw that broke the camel’s back after several months of disquiet over a string of poor showings and his histrionics when going down too easily under the slightest challenge. When even your own supporters are telling you to "Get up!", you know you are fooling no one.
Following the Wigan game, there were questions raised as to whether Eboue could possibly play for Arsenal again. But, as always, Arsene Wenger backed his player and ensured he remained on the first team scene. At first, he was gently mocked by the home fans as they proclaimed to visiting supporters, "You’ve only come to see Eboue", and even stadium announcer, Paul Burrell, got in on the act, calling him "goal machine" when he netted two late goals against Blackburn last March.
A year later, the irony has largely been dropped from the Eboue chants. Much to his credit, after the nightmare of the Wigan game, the player got his head down and his act together and worked hard to redeem himself. Though his appearances have been limited this season, he has got on with his job with the minimum of fuss and without much of the stupidity and play-acting that used to blight his game.
The other reason for his resurgence is that, when he has played, Arsene Wenger has tended to use him more as a right-back than as a right-sided midfielder. He looks far more at home, focussed and effective in this position. In midfield, he was often guilty of over-playing and drifting out of position. As a defender, he knows he has responsibilities at the back but is not afraid to make striking cameo appearances when linking up with the attack - and that is how a modern-day full-back is expected to play.
The run he produced to set up Arsenal’s opener yesterday was not an isolated incident. Throughout the afternoon, he outshone most of his teammates and showed energy and flair in a match that largely lacked both. Maybe only having played a minimal part in Wednesday night's game helped, but one sensed that yesterday’s performance saw the completion of Emmanuel Eboue’s redemption after that dark day against Wigan last season.

impressive play by Emmanuel Eboue, still believe Arsenal can win the trophy......

Good comment David. I agree with all the points raised and certainly think Eboue deserves the credit. Eboue tormented the Sunderland defence all day and created the first goal. If not I would think we were headed for a repeat of the away game. He had shown the desire and energy that is required of every player in the team. He was decisive and provided cutting edge, something Sagna was not able to provide in recent games. But Eboue should continue to keep his composure and work hard as he has shown tendencies to be carried away easily. The other player who deserves mention is Song, who did a decent job in the game. It was nice to see Walcott trying, but I still he think he is way off the mark - bad passes in critical areas, bad crosses, and lack of confidence in front of goal. Bendtner is worst. Seemingly lazy and drifted way too often, the goal was an aberration. Silvestre had a torrid time, what was he doing there? Sunderland had chances to humiliate us, but Jones decided not to. Lucky

Bless him,at last he found his way back to take the ball to the byline more often and cutback, which he was good at a few seasons back, then he lost his way trying to emulate Henry every time when he got the ball near the box. Should he also backtrack and tackle more, with more dribbling experience confidence under his belt as of late,he might scale new heights yet. At last.

Either we take it or not Eboue is the best 7 we have this season and his more active than eny body in the team in that position.

I still think Sagna is a better defender. Eboue's form should not be overplayed. He's better in midfield. Wenger should drop the one dimensional Theo who, for all it's worth, can't put in a decent delivery.

Incisive as usual David. The good thing is that we won and pocketed the three points. It is always better to play ugly and win than to play beautifully and end up losing. Examples abound Recall the two games played at Manchester last year and you will agree with my view. The other good thing is that Walcott appears to be regaining his composure. We wish him well and pray for consistency on his part.

Well said, mate! Think Arsene should put sentiments aside and play Eboue ahead of Walcott. Walcott is not troubling any defence this season.

I have said since Xmas that the 1st "top" team to string 8 wins in a row in the back half will take the title. Sunderland makes 1 win, 7 to get. I know there are only 11 matches left for the Gunners to pull it off, but at only 6 points from top, I really believe such a run would give Arsenal the title this curious season. Of course 0-for-4 against Chelsea and Man U hurts. Even if we manage the trick, a title this year cannot paper over the fact Arsenal needs to upgrade in a handful of key positions. I expect this summer several personnel decisions to go against some Gunners used to being in the senior set-up. An early vote for Arsenal MVP of the season: Andrei Arshavin. Without his contribution (out-of-position) this season, Arsenal would be well back in the desperate mixer with the likes of Liverpool, Man City, etc. And credit allowed were credit is due, an early vote for league MVP: Wayne Rooney, who has single-handedly put Man U in the frame, and can do the same for England in 2010.

i think eboue deserves to play more games he is fast in attacks coming from the back and his crosses are far better than sagna's who looks to be tired because of the many games he has played we are going all the way this season i got the belief.

Despite his poor performances and seeming to fall out of favor, it was clear to me and should have been clear to Arsenal fans that he offers energy, enthusiasm and power going forward that they are often lacking.
The schedule the rest of the way favors Arsenal, so let's hope Man U take a bite out of Chelsea and then slip themselves, allowing the Gunners to control their own destiny. And hope that Arshavin and Gallas are back and healthy

He was the most effective player in the Porto match for just the 3 minutes + stoppage time that he played. He put in two dangerous crosses in the box, one of which we should have converted, and won a free kick outside the box. He is the real comeback kid for Arsenal, because he could have asked to leave last season becuase there were teams especially in Italy that were asking. Instead he continued to work and right now is one of if not the most experienced right back/midfielder in our ranks. Definitely he is our utility man ala Flamini. Wenger needs to find a place for him EVERY match whether as a sub or starter.

No doubt, that ebue's performance was 5 star. His surging and evasive dribbling runs are his major strength. Sangna's poor crossess and his finishing at the final quater will continue to strenghten Ebue's hold to this position.

Whenever Arsene Wenger wants to go defensive, he uses Sagna. The reverse is true when he uses Eboue. However, I reckon he should start with Eboue in the return match with Porto. We need to be sharp against Porto.

Man U is jst an ordinary team except that theres something Mr fergie does to stiffen up hes boys i want wenger to do the same. Eboue is gud and solid he helps the attack and i seem to prefer him to Sagna but people say Sagna defends better how true that is i dnt know. Also Sagna doesnt deliver hes crosses well, you wont see Eboue crosing he wuld go forward to rattle the defence of the opponent so hes one better than Sagna...Fabregas wuld be suspended in the next game if im right although hes hasnt been too good in the last tow matches but well hes presence is good for us, i just hope the boys can get us the needed three points when hes absent...also good to see Almunia coming up again he made some good saves which you would expect any goalkeeper to do so not much praise for him cos thats what hes paid to do...lol Bendtner is just there to cause more trouble for any defence with his hieght if not i wuld have written him off cos hes positioning is just so bad.

Defo Eboue has grown in leaps and bounds. He was the biggest threat along the right flank and me thinks some of his forays donw the right must have sparked walcott to try equally.
He has more composure, is more focused and makes intelligent decisions unlike before. Jut needs to keep his head down.
Silvestre was a horror show & thank God Jones forgot his shooting boots in the locker.
The league is still winnable tho' we have to win ALL games. No draws.
Plus we need to be above par against Porto..we need that 2 goal cushion.
 |
Posted by jasper on 02/22/2010
we must find a clear winning formula against the teams remaining.our tactics seem to be predictable, though functional.one wonders what Eboue did for 87mins on the bench against Porto while Walcot who is hopefully coming back spent more time on the pitch. All our games are winnable but the right tactics must be applied to the games as they come.Bendtner is skillful but very casual. His presence does not scare defenders like eboue terrorised Sunderland from defence on saturday. We can win this league with the right spirit.

Good comment David,
I must say I was also satisfied with his performance but again luck was on our side considering the grolious chances missed in the second half.
From now on ,one question remains; Can te team build an eleven match winning streak because apart from that, may be Arsenal will have to wait till next season for a premier leaugue title.

I was incredibly impressed with his performance and happy with how he has returned to form, despite the lack of playing time. I ma just as guilty as any gunner faithful for denouncing him because of his lack of effectiveness. I hope wenger continues his decision to play sagna away and eboue at home- this performance supports the decision.

I think ARSENAL is a great team and the dream of everyone that loves football but it still needs experience and thats where the eboues come in. They are the type that weather the storms and face the heat to take the team to the next level. Bendtner can be better but he is indeed lazy, not too skillful and inconsistence near the goal: which is bad for a striker. Cesc is a star in his peak and it will take no time for the mighty ones to pick him.
While ARSENAL is playing well, they need good attackers to finish their dead balls.
Wishing them all the luck the need...they need a trophy this year o!Atleast for their loyal fans.......

Well stated. I did not watch the game however, let's not forget that Eboue was the starting right back on our team which played in CL FINAL four long years ago! The other thing that Eboue brings is something that others still do not have (save for RVP, Gallas and Fabregas), which is guts. I guess because they are relatively young, some of our players lack certain passion and fire, like they are afraid to express themselves. I noticed the somewhat subdued celebration Diaby had after scoring the winner against Liverpool. Fellas, you make your name by caring and playing hard; thats how you get your respect and become Vieiras and/or Keans. Wallcot, Bendtner, Song (yes, Song) and even Arshavin sometime seem a bit lackadaisical, almost like they're happy just to be playing for Arsenal in big games. Maybe Im wrong but Id love to see Song just obliterate Drogba once, by accident, by elbowing him discreetly in the side or something...
 |
Posted by Maran on 02/23/2010
Filip, your comment was an interesting one although it may sound controversial,"I'd love to see Song just obliterate Drogba once.." I found it interesting because I think that it is an important aspect of the game that you had raised. The current players are too soft on the pitch. They terribly need to toughen up. They need to terrorize the opponents. Look at how Eboue single handedly struck fear in the Sunderland defence. Sometimes teams like Man U and Chelsea and even Arsenal in the early 2000 win because opposing teams fear them and accord too much respect. That way half the battle is already won at the start of the game. Skill and technical ability is the advantage our boys have, but they have to use it with steel. Charge at the defence once in a while; Shackle the players once in a while;Breathe down the necks of the strikers. Our small and dimunitive strikers should show disrespect to big defenders like Terry and Ferdinand, shove them aside with speed, terrorize them. Strike fear!

Absolutely well done Eboue, you guys may have missed the fact that his link-up was the reason for Theo's better performance. Eboue always passed the ball behind the back of the defenders so that Theo could run past them, that was not the case when Sagna was playing. I still miss the combination of Hleb & Eboue.

Well it was a good win.. as we know not all the times we can play beautiful game and win it. sometimes you will have to play it sluggishly and still win it, and that was what happened last Saturday. Arsenal were controlling the game and putting in some industrious moves but could not find the final cut to the goal. they did it in Henry's way and that was executed by Bentdner through a pass from Eboue. This is what we want to see week in week out. Go from here with victories and get the trophy by the end of the campaign. We need tenacious play in midfield to hold opponents so that they would not enter the D-BOX. Win all the matches and be a Champion..

thumps up emmy eboue, u showed really quality and ensured u can, given opportunity to always start. u reminded me alot of robert pires when he used to run full picth only to spot henry and score goals. its such a humiliation to see eboue on bench at these crucial moments wen we need to not only catch rivals in point but also hit 'em on goal difference!! old man plz style up and wisely attend to your advises for fresh thoughts. rivals are not really betther than us, but their wings are effective and thus coz so much pressure. emmy shud have revived the secret behing wining potential games. great job emmy, GUNNER 4 LIFE!

i always fancied eboue as a player, altho i think at his best, sagna is much better and my preferred right back. hats of to eboue and his performance. as for the win we pulled out, i think its a trait of a great football team. the key to winning the bpl is consistency.big teams need to get points consistently week in week out, whether or not they are playing at their best which is just what arsenal did in this match.

I am an Arsenal fan. Arsenal is playing the best football in EPL in terms of beauty. But they are lacking a quality goalkeeper, a quality striker and a quality left back. Arsenal should buy some good players like Chamakh,Marco Storari of AC Milan etc

When the going gets tougher the best will be knew eboue is a different player 4rm Thoe, one has speed the other is more experienced, they are both useful on their days, What we need now is Big luck, injury free team, good officiating, not like the crazy 1 in porto. Stoke will determine our fate because for long we have not won @ stoke even when the big boys were around but tins changes lets, hope and hope for the best and see what happens to the rest of the so called untouchables like chelsea and Manu.He who laughs last laughs best let see what the God of soccer has for us. I will sugest we hair an incompetent refeer, so that we will also rob porto when they come visiting since it is allowed to cheat in football now adays or guys what do you think? Win is win even it means pulling the keeper away so that the striker can score a goal Iam sure we not going into play off this session but where we will be at the end fate will tell best of luck to you fellow Gunners and lover of the game.

i was impressed with the win...eboue seems ontop of his game...he put in a solid performance...i still believe wenger should cash in on an experienced striker or a more prolific one cuz Bentner at his best can only be a super sub...now we need consistency and concentration...avoiding silly mistakes in the back an be more assertive and aggressive in the midfield...we need strikers i m sorry to say that can play a little dirty cuz its a tough world out there in the premiership...roses n gentleness will get us no where.
So i am hoping we capitalize on saturday's win and maintain the good streak!
good game lads... we have every hope of winning it this time around...the other top teams seem to have some crisis of their own... lets capitalize on this..we have already played all the teams that can cause us problems so realistically, we can pull off wins from our nxt 11 games...!

we dont need to experiment we need to win all the way wallcot bendtner are no where near eboue in passing attacking and defending start eboue all the remaining games.defence we need gallas sol vermaleen can even play left back so that clichy can rest but for sure we need a good keeper.ramsy wants to do it alone the pass from eboue should have been passed to rosicky and was going to be a goal .ramsy should come in when we win. bendtner needs time to play arsenal game if he will ever im not sure just exited for nothing .song is fighter and plays better than diaby who loses the ball more than any body else

I've always thought eboue to be the better Rb than Sagna.More skillful, better crosser of the ball & OVERALL a more intelligent player in it shows when on the pith.Even as a right winger he owns that position.iMO HE IS BETTER THAN THE PLAYERS WE HAVE PLAYING IN THAT POSITION.(Walcott).Why theo was not sold two seasons ago is beyond me.Utterly useless,no skill no passing/crossing ability, poor decision making.& no finishing a waste of time & eboue must be wondering what he has to do to get a start for this team.

Good article - I think we still have a good chance of finishing amongst the top 2 of the EPL and making it the semifinals of the Champions' League.
Our main obstacle this year has been injuries - Chelsea, man united nor any other top 2 or 3 club in their respective european league has had to shuffle their lineups as much as we have had or lost their key striker.
Each time players have returned from injury, they get hurt again 2 games upon returning thus preventing key players like Theo, B52, ed9 and vela from establishing any rhythm.
if our boys can play a month of consecutive games without injury everything else will fall into place.
i think arsenal still has the best team in all of europe, just not the best 11...

I think that walcoot should be given more credit although he didnt trouble the defence. hes still young. eboue performed well too because he performed as a modern day defender. i can see that he has about learnt from sagna the style of crossing well into the box and running up front in a good time and in appropriate manner, not straying up too much left. i think bendtner should be playing more often because of long injuries to arshavin and van persie. he can be lazy at times but he is a vry good player with the right mind. hes tall and very good as a central forward for heading

It's important to know that whatever has happened to Emmanuel Eboue CAN happen to the other boys. They should and must consistently try to improve despite the odds. Theo, Clichy and Bendtner should learn a thing or two from the EBOUE TRANSFORMATION.
As for Sylvester, I need a nap.

I'm extremely Arsenal supporter. Dear all Chelsea and MU supporters. All fans sure support their favourite club and hope their club can win the premier league. Arsenal gonna to win the chmapion this season. Let's do some simple statistic.
Arsenal have tough game remaining against MC and Tottenham only......but gap with chelsea 6 point and MU 2 point only
Chelsea have to face remaining tough game against Aston villa, MC, MU, Liverpool and Tottenham
MU have to face remaining tough game against Aston villa, MC, Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham
So, the possibility who will win the champion? Even i assume, Chelsea have draw result with all five teams, leading arsenal just 1 point only.
while MU have draw result with all five teams, Arsenal leading MU 3 points. Let be realistic all soccer lover...
I Support u, ARSENAL

eboue did a fantastic job that nyt and he need to continue his brilliant perfomance angaint the rest of the game especially at emirate next week against porto.
berthner on the other hand is good but not careful when it cames to finishing the dead balls.u can imagine a team with good midfilders like arsenal when they are in good form like that he just used one chance.
walcot and fab are kind of boys we want to have at arsenal with pressure the the manager put in them we can display a fantastic games.
