They almost had us fooled didn't they? Two weeks ago the Gunners beat Bolton and went to the top of the table. At that point, even the most sceptical Arsenal fans must have dusted off that little box that all football supporters keep at the back of the cupboard marked "hope" and taken the lid off. After today's crushing defeat at the hands of Manchester United though, Arsene Wenger's team looked as far away from being genuine title contenders as they could be and that little box has been put away again for another season.
Today at Ashburton Grove, Arsenal were outclassed and out-played by their visitors and were lucky that they weren’t on the end of a heavier beating. In fact, it flattered them that Thomas Vermaelen’s late consolation effort got them on the scoresheet at all.
In fairness, there wasn’t a lot between the two teams in the early exchanges. Both had their chances but United did look the more threatening. They attacked and defended as a unit whereas the Gunners never seemed to manage to get enough numbers forward to support Andrey Arshavin who was played as a lone-striker. When the visitors struck two goals in four minutes before the break, it knocked the stuffing out of the Arsenal players and, as their heads dropped, there seemed to be no way back. It was all horribly reminiscent of Chelsea’s visit to the Grove a few months ago.
Not much changed in the second half and when Ji-Sung Park ran half the length of the pitch without so much as encountering an Arsenal defender he was left with the simple task of slotting the ball past Manuel Almunia and killing the game. He did both.
The introduction of Theo Walcott did nothing to turn the tide. The way he has been playing lately, bringing him on was like throwing a drowning man a brick. Emmanuel Eboue and Nicklas Bendtner also entered the fray but it was too little too late. Vermaelen’s deflected goal did give the home support a momentary glimmer that a draw might be attainable but any hopes of that were soon extinguished as United ran down the clock in facile style.
So, rather like the Champions League semi-final last season, United dished out a painful footballing lesson to the Gunners. They moved the ball quickly and, time and again, when they broke they did so with pace and precision. Up front for them Wayne Rooney looked strong and powerful and was never short of support. In contrast, Arsenal plodded all afternoon. In the time it took them to work the ball forward, United invariably had nine or ten men back. Too much of the home team’s play came down the middle. With a lack of width, they were easily crowded out by their visitors and, when shots on goal were chiselled out, they rarely tested Van Der Sar.
Today’s match was nothing short of disastrous for Arsenal in terms of any lingering title-winning aspirations. Next week, they have to travel to Chelsea and, even if they were to achieve a result there, it would take an incredible run from now until the end of the season to see the Premier League trophy come back to North London. The heart might say that we have to keep believing it is possible but the head looks around at this current squad and just doesn’t see them doing it.
I love Arsene Wenger. During his time as manager he has brought us trophies and has comprehensively modernised Arsenal Football Club. I respect the way he has gone about his business too. He hasn’t relied on buying success and has a great record at nurturing talent and turning up footballing uncut diamonds. It seems though that, with this current squad, he has put his faith in a number of players who just aren’t good enough and, worse still, who can’t even repay their manager’s belief in them with a show of guts and courage in a crucial match like todays. Everyone will have their own ideas as to which players come up short but the truth is that there are too few genuine match-winners in this group of players.
So, it seems that Arsenal supporters will have to resign themselves to another season of being "best of the rest". This squad can beat most teams in the Premier League but when it comes to the really big games they just do not seem to have that steely winning mentality to pull off results when it matters. It’s all a bit sad really.

This is a totally knee jerk reaction to arsenal's defeat. Arsenal have enough talented players to have won the match, and they are capable of much more. Arsenal lost the game tactically and will surely adopt a more cautious approach against Chelsea and Manchester United, if we meet them again in the champions league.
There are some players today who were not totally match fit. Clichy is not yet 100%. Nasri needs more games. Bendtner and Walcott simply have not had enough games. Denilson and Almunia were poor. The question is, with 14 games left, can Arsenal go on an unbeaten run, starting at Chelsea. ? It doesn't look good at the moment, but containment at Chelsea followed by a restoration of confidence may do the trick.

wow, what a disappointment. Clichy was terrible again, with both the first two goals coming as his expense. In goal, we should give Vito another run in the team as Almunia is not getting it done. And Arshavin has continued to be off-form, as a simple lay-off pass (or two) early on could have given us a lead, but he opted for far post efforts that were never going to happen. Sure, we have Ramsey, Diaby, Merida, and VanP all out injured, but this was a terrible setup and display from the off. Maybe next week at the Bridge we can start another run, and maybe we should bench a few off our starting XI and give some of the others a chance to impress. (A game or two on the bench could maybe improve Arshavin's attitude and play, and Almunia also.)

Last 4 seasons we have had similar situation Jan-Feb period we lose everything starting from FA cup to CL..I sit back and wonder what went wrong today.Well I got the reason "Everything" went wrong for Arsenal. Arshavin not passing the ball in the D to Nasri; terrible mistake...that could have changed the course of the game. Can't believe Russian playing for self glory...hope he got a lesson from Professor.Gale Clichy unable to contain Nani, who is a mediocre winger compared to Ronaldo...who else can you contain ??We were 10 men Arsenal against 11 Manu as Almunia again plays in opposition favor and not to forget his dreadful awful back pass to Manchester player..another player who was poor as always was Denilson....He was no where seen on the pitch...He neither defends well nor attacks the opposition..With Drogba and Co. waiting at SB, i fear worse result than today...I agree this team is good for 3rd,but we dont have match winners like Henry, Bergkamp, Rooney, Drogba to win big matches..

Cry for the Gunners! These losses to big clubs are becoming formulaic. They lose to Chelsea the same way, they lose to United the same way. They seem to leak goals quickly as well, giving up 2 to Chelsea in a few minutes and 2 to United in a few minutes. They also seem to make one or two howling mistakes in these matches (Diaby's own goal against United at Old Trafford in August, when Arsenal were outplaying United), Clichy getting eaten alive by Nani, and Almunia being Almunia and having trouble with a ball in the air.
Get a better keeper, and get rid of Walcott. Sorry, he's not panning out, he's no better now than he was 3 years ago.

Today was bad. No two ways about it. But you can't say Arsenal is totally out of cup competition. They're only five points out and after Chelsea most of the teams the rest of the way are the bottom of the table. A win at Chelsea is going to be crucial to make the run happen, but it's still a real possibility.

The Great Pretenders. It is a lesson to Arsenal, Arsene, and supporters that you cannot win title with luck alone. In the matches prior, Arsenal were lucky as the opposing teams like Bolton, had many chances to humiliate Arsenal but finished woefully. That was it. The Arsenal defence is a sham. They cannot pretend with teams like Man U and Chelsea who will not hesitate to punish the defence with sharper and hungrier attackers. With defence in shambles, it was disgusting to see Gallas and Vermaelen with brainless audacity to wander together in United's half, when 2 counter attacks were launched and resulted in 2 goals. The third goal was most humiliating. 1st goal was unbelievable. Nani, who had been clueless in Man U this year had made monkeys out of Arsenal defenders, particularly Clichy to make that cross. And who was Arsene fooling with a third rate goalkeeper in the first team. Alumnia has done his best to prove that he doesn't belong there, but when will Arsene care about gk?

The team which play the beautiful game has also a penchant to lose spectacularly. Arsenal always offer records when comes to losing. They don't just lose, but they get thrashed. I do not mind an even contest that Arsenal eventually lose. But not the way they do it. When it comes to crunch matches, they lose in a familiar fashion. Man City, Chelsea and Man U. Start the game brightly, and then when the opposing team show their mettle, our players will just drop their heads and invite a knockout punches. The games against these three teams has shown the wide gulf in class between them and Arsenal. I love to be proven wrong, but we cannot just believe in miracles. Against, Bolton, Everton and Portsmouth, it was miracles that led to the unbeaten run. It cannot go on forever. Don't bother about getting a sharp striker, a reliable goalkeeper, good defenders and it is always the same case when January comes. Look forward to getting a place in Champions League the following year.

Agree with you David. I love Arsene. But I hate him too. As you said, "he has put his faith in a number of players who just aren’t good enough". I think he should have limits to such faith. He is not running a football academy. Running a football club, he should be accountable to fans not just his players. What is he doing with Denilson? This not the first time he has "gone fishing" in a big match. Even Liam Brady would have done better playing last night. I shall not mention about Alumnia again. Why? Why was Arshavin doing what he did last night. Why can't we get a good striker. Recovery of Bentdner is never going to be the answer. Why is he doing this? Arsene used to earn his pay bringing titles to this club. Now he seems to do that by making money for the club, seemingly a better business than rearing cattles. What else can explain his obstinacy. I saw the frustration in the eyes of Fabregas last night. I adore that player, but to be fair I think he deserves a better team.

My mind is not even with Chelsea match. Based on our trend, I can't even imagine the disastrous consequences. The team need to reflect on their failures before they start preparing. Gallas and Vermaelen should focus on defending. No need to run the attacks. We can do with a rookie goalkeeper, not the ones who embarassed the goalkeeping world with their performance against Stoke and Man U. We should also galvanise the midfield to be a tighter unit. Rosicky and Nasri stray too often. Arshavin should get his shooting boots on and be a team player. We also need a leader on the ground, especially when the going gets rough. Fabregas does well to with his talking with his boots, but the good old shouting to rally the his teammates may be needed. The Manager needs to review his tactics. What does Denilson bring to this team? What does Walcott do to change things? Sagna and Clichy should learn to cross better,if not don't do it. If Bendtner is not playing, what's the point of crossing? We hope.

I have been an avid supporter of Wenger's transfer policy, given the current economic context. But it is safe to say that FOOTBALL WISE, I believe he's been taking the team in the wrong direction for the last five years or so: all flair, no grit.
We've all been moaning about Arsenal's defensive frailty, yet frailty doesn't even begin to describe it: I spotted Rooney's run before the second goal A MILE AWAY, yet no one tracked him until he was at the six yard box! The collective positioning of the team is downright AMATEURISH, and is forcing me to seriously question Wenger's tactical acumen. If the same mistakes are being made again and again, year after year, then Wenger must carry the blame for not fixing it.
The season is NOT over, but this is a MASSIVE blow to Arsenal's overall credibility. We have most hope in the CL, but I feel Wenger's reign is edging ever closer to a bitter end. Given his earlier success, this would be quite a shame.

To state the bloody obvious, the thing about Arsenal is that against world-class ruthless teams their weakness exposes them. Against Bolton, Arsenal got away with their suicidal offside trap and their woeful man marking (or lack of it) because of our superior attacking ruthlessness.
Against United, we were the better team for the first twenty minutes, but Arshavin angered EVERYONE for TWICE not passing to players in better positions (didn't Nasri mouth something like 'you don't pass the ball'?) We had United on the ropes at this point, but having failed to take our chances, the inevitable defensive collapse happened. Once our attack was stifled, there was only ever going to be one winner.

It gave me hope when it beated Bolton but within one week, it failed me again. 5points~! Losing 5points in one week and Chelsea is on top and one game on hand. What an unconsistance team like a roller coaster, up and down, did Wenger feel it is fun in EPL?
Maybe Wenger need bring up a better keeper and a tougher striker, and maybe Hunterlaar is a good option? Look at the front field, we only have player in the heigh of 170cm~175cm for recently games, opponent defenders can easily block all the cross ball as the shorties don't have any advantage in high ball. Bendtner and Eduardo are not consistance while Robbin is easily get injured even though he is skillfull. Can Arsenal only depend on Captain Cecs and Arshavin? Hope that Wenger can wake up and give us some surprise in the transfer market.

Knee jerk reaction my butt. We just aren't in ManU's class. I really think this is an average ManU team. Rooney is in great form, but no one else scares me. And they still soundly beat the Arsenal.
Blame has to go to Wenger. He picked this group of soft players. And refuses to acknowledge their softness. I'm sick of his philosphy. He has to change it. And to change it means he has to let some of HIS players go. Denilson- pack up. Gallas- leave. How about a true defensive midfielder that can marshall the defense? How about an emphasis on defense on occasion? We knew we wouldn't keep a clean sheet. But after two goals we played as if we had no emotion, no heart. And Wenger's sitting there pouting. He makes me sick on the bench with his whinning and post game excuses. Face it, buddy, you may not have to go spend like Madrid, but you have to pay to play. Buy some adults, and not the geriatric type.

Phil, that was the most inspiring glimmer of hope I have encountered all day. It was a stunning slap to the face considering how similar this defeat was to Chelsea, yet, it wasn't all the same. I feel that the players were a bit dismayed and couldn't find their feet. Teams like United and Chelsea won't give you the time to do so.
The soon we can take our reign on the match, the easier it will be for us to discover that flowing football.
Arshavin had a handful of chances in the opening stages but was just a touch selfish, and after Almunia's 'palm of death' it all seemed to fall apart. However, whatever happened happened and now we need to look forward to next weekend. I seriously hope for a touch of magic and brilliance next weekend. We can do it.
If Bendtner want's to prove his worth then now is the best time to do so.

What's happening in Arsenal is really sad. Losing 3-1 to Man U is a real disgrace especially when they have a makeshift defence with Rio and Vidic missing. The team is unable to score on home ground advantage against Evans and Brown goes to show the lack of communication and self believe. Its time Arsene takes a hard look at himself and the team. To have faith is onething but to be foolish in trusting that some players still got it, is another. How long is he going to play Denilson. In every game he has played, Arsenal has suffered in one way or another. From the 1st to the 3rd goal he was strolling behind all the goal scorers. Almunia is another idiot who doesnt deserve to wear the shirt. Why can't Arsene go into the market to at least loan players. David James is there, so is Benjani and other strikers who would love to come to Arsenal for the remaining season especially when we have a relatively good chance of fighting for the title.

this team isnt a title winning team even AW knows that. AS long as we have AW as manager and his policy of buying mostly 18 yrs olds, then we have to expect this similar situations every year. I will be so surprise if anyone of U wasn't expecting this coming-and I will also be so suprise if none of U wont be expecting 2 to 3 players leaving the team by the end of this season. Asene is good of displacing players in other teams indicating to buy them and then left them to languish. mr. wenger arsenal is all yours, what ever U do the board trust U as well as the fans. you can ignore every one and take this team to the ditch, or U can re-exermine your past 4 to 5 years policy and change this team again to a trophy winning team. Nor just been undefited for 14 to 16 games, or team is maturing, but wins when maters most such as yesterdays game. good luck AW, I just wonder how long you going to keep trying with this same policy. most people re evalaute their policys if D goals re not met.

agree with sumit and ja wallin...almunia, clichy and denilson had a bad game. Need a new GK to face chelsea, and honestly not Fabianski..can give the opportunity to Mannone, even he still young to face the big team. Clichy has a pace, but as defender he should better in defence, not just overlapping and make the unuseful cross ( i'm really miss how Ashley Cole play).. Denilson, again make a lot of mistakes..
Well, only 2 cup left (BPL and CL)..I can say that we can still focus on CL. For BPL, depends on Chelsea game and some miracles happen to Chelsea and Man U.
Well, I'm still trust Wenger ability..Go Gunners!!

well... lets start with man u... nani and rooney played their hearts out... van der sar put in a few good stops and SAF's tactics were spot on... he did what chelsea are going to do come sunday...hold the midfield back... with 3 players in the centre, cesc had to drop back and help song... denilson is a good player...great potential but he doesnt stand up to a physical team... arshavin was a little selfish but hey...that happens all the time with all the teams... yes he shouldve passed... but...yes...we should have a proper striker to stand in for an injured RvP, an off-from eduardo and a lacklustre bendtner... at the back...as much as i love almunia's dedication, i fear wenger puts too much stock in him... as a top 4 team and former champions, we should have a better GK... and i've always felt that clichy was vulnerable and he proved that last night... he should have attacked park...he should have done a lot more...
 |
Posted by kurt gidwani on 02/01/2010
but at the end of the day, we gotta remember one thing... we were playing against a team that almost always...almost always, not matter where they are in the table and how low their morale is... always raises their game against arsenal... and we have this problem against man u... we lose confidence when he concede a goal... you could see it in almunia's face... you could see it in out passing... it was a bad game... but the war's not over yet... i still have faith...even though i think there were a few fundamental mistakes made... i think todays the day wenger dips his hand in the transfer market...i think he should... we need to win the title... or we will have to start against from scratch next season..without cesc...

I have given Wenger my trust for seasons and i think its time to as well start to believe that this season and more to come, Arsenal and Wenger's persistance in believing in unreliable players is always going to leave the team good for 4th place.
I believe in miracles and that is where my hope is as per now but not in this squand and more to come if Wenger's attitude does not change. We had a chance in F.A he fielded a squand of veterans and a number of pretenders, Am not to question the logic of the professor but that was a let down.
Am seeing us loosing players just because they will start to yearn teams which are cup winners, Farbregas tops this list.
We shall go back into the cycle of building talent but is this the major reason of the club's existance? The club needs to plough back some of the profits in buying a few finished players to help the young ones. vermalean and Arshavin are the living examples, plz we need a finished STRIKER Van Perse and injuries are inseparable.

I am sure that this blog site is never visited by any of the guys at Arsenal. The reason is simple, we may not be technically sound to pass tacticts to the team. Some of us watch the match on not 3D TV. That can mean we may not be having a clear view of what is happening in the field. Therefore our comments, judgements and recommendation to the team are and will always be ignored.Just after Aston vila game, i pointed out that we will be beaten by couter attack if we do not contain them. It came to pass and we are respectfully licking our wounds under the shade of shame. If one is observant enough, you will notice that arsenal can not contain high balls at the back and Galas with all his age and experience is thrown down by Roony like a small baby. The moment we have Galas out of defence and keep someone else, we may just stand a chance. At Chelse expect constant attack, since we know that in our defence no one is that fast, offside traps set by galas will make us loose the game. Viva A.

As much as we like and trust Arsene Wenger as our manager but i think his arrogance and cockiness also costs us to winning against the big 4 (Man City) included, since VP's injury we have been winning games that we can win with or without our big players and our young players simply cant rise to the occassion when it really matters. honestly we need a striker with pace and physic to convert this chances someone like Kenwin Jones or Jermain Defoe, when are we gonna spend some big money and buy a complete player rather than a rough diamond, i can tell you if we are going to keep on Grooming and selling players that we cant even replace then we are in trouble next season.. Best of luck at the Bridge.. GO GUNNERS..

Call it what you will. Steely winning mentality, fighting spirit, belief...we lacked it against ManU. I agree completely with previous comments that Arshavin played poorly and selfishly today. With RVP out and Eduardo injured, Arshavin had a big role to play today - he did not live up to it. Time and again he chose to take the more difficult shot than to pass to a better-positioned teammate, while on multiple attacks he lost the ball to opposition in a poor attempt to cross or trying to dribble through defenders. The expressions of Arshavin each time the camera was on him sums up Arsenal's attitude against ManU: dejected, defeated, and uninspired. Blame the lack of precision in passing and the general attitude of the team on fatigue from the Aston Villa draw; but Arsenal better be prepared for rough roads ahead - Chelsea, Liverpool, and the remainder of the fixtures - if they want to win that title. C'mon Arsenal!

Everything that could go wrong went wrong. The defending was terribly poor. How could Man U cut out the entire defence via counters? Why were Clichy and Denilson unable to hold Nani? I believe that Wenger is to the blame. Is it not clear that this squad cannot produce? Man U could have scored up to six considering that Almunia is always underperforming. The January window just closed and no player was bought. For me, this season ended with VP's injury and Wenger's stubborn reluctance or should i say refusal to buy a striker, at least. Arshavin for all his endeavour is not a striker and will never lead the line as well as VP does. Wenger should please be swift in buying any player he identifies. His style of haggling as though he is buying tomatoes and pepper is not helpful. In the summer window of 2009, we lost Melo to Juventus and did not tie up the Chamakh deal. Perhaps, Melo might have been able to replace the mediocre Denilson. Only last week, we lost Smalling to Man U.

when wenger is forced to play tomas rosicky at striker because eduardo and van persie are out injured it is no surprise that they were not able to finish. its funny how easily people forget the portions of first half where the red devils were back on their heals at the mercy of a 5'5" andrei arshavin. If the russian had put one of his chances in the back of the net or had dished the ball of to Nasri on his breakaway opportunity the game would have been completely different. Arsenal had more shots, more possession and more corners without there 2 of legitimate offensive threats in addition to sol campbell.
I don't say this to excuse the loss at all, Arsenal lost fair and square (unlike the match at Old Trafford) but it has never ceased to amaze me how much criticism thrown the gunner's way when they have a single bad game. theyre as talented as chelsea and man u not to mention younger and arent out of the race just yet.

What a pathetic display. I felt sorry for the fans who paid to be at the stadium. Looks like we are not buying anyone, even though we are seriously in need extra players. Alumina and Denilson are not good enough but that's not saying anything new. I can see Gibbs next season being our 1st choice LB if Clichy continue to play like that. Wenger has seriously got to stop getting Vermaelen and Gallas constantly moving forward and exposing us. The 2nd & 3rd goal for Man Utd were the result of that. If we play like this against chelski, I just hope we don't end up getting a trashing.
 |

Arsenal has proved to be a team only capable of beating teams below the top 4. the reason is simple - there isn't enough quality there to match their bigger opponents. unfortunately for us, the Professor himself easily gets carried away with some cricket beatings of weaker opponents and declares he is not buying anybody saying he is happy with the squad that he has. Apart from very few quality Players, most of the players at Arsenal are average.
As for yesterday's game, for me Arshavin was too selfish not to relay the ball to others better positioned than himself. He should learn from that. Clichy was just unfortunate-lacking match fitness. Denilson should have been substituted early on - he was'nt in there. Almunia doesn't deserve the number 1 jersey-he easily gets confused. His judgement betrays him at times.
Am now worried of the attacking power of DD at the bridge. Am still keeping the faith though.

Arsene should try Vermaelen on Song position and Sol Cambell pair with Gallas on the center back. Vermaelen header and shoot on goal was fantastic. He can replace Van Persie on the attacking therefore defensive midfielder more suit to him as he also can defend very well. For Chelsea game, better to put Eboe and Traore together with Cambell + Gallas. Traore is stronger physically compare to Clichy to fit with Chelsea striker Anelka+Dogba+Lampard (How he show on Agbonlahor during last Aston Villa match at Emirates). Arsenal can win the game. Why not ? Wigan already show the way how to beat Chelsea... Go go gunners

I have to agree with your assessment here david. As much as I'm a loyal supporter of arsenal, they just dont seemed to have match winners.True they have talented players but the only match winners i see willing to 'die' for the team and able to strike 'fear' is Gallas,Vermaelen,Fab,arshavin and rvp with arshavin very disappointing and RVP still injured.
Even with us having a good run after the chelsea game 2 months back, arsenal still doesnt look convincing for me.How can they beat chelsea away when they lose 0-3 at emirates?counting the semifinal last year against man utd,it seems they ae found lacking against the big teams and dont have a match winner like henry in the old days who can create something out of nothing, carrying the weight of the team on their shoulders.
Clichy was very disappointing.did u see how nani gets past him so easily and the mistakes he makes?
Beating chelsea would get us back in the title race, drawing would give hope and losing would def end it all.

Arsenal undone again by TERRIBLE mistakes at the back.
First goal, great move by Nani but lets face it Almunia should have tipped that away to the side. Instead he tips it RIGHT into the goal...seems every game he has to have one moment of insanity, and this time the Gunners paid for it. Of all the talk for bringing in a target striker, what we need more is a reliable goalkeeper. Get rid of Almunia. I've watched him since he first played and he has never impressed.
Second goal...the stupidity award goes to the entire backline. 4 defenders against 2 attackers....entire defense is caught staring at the ball while WAYNE ROONEY strolls up the middle of the pitch unmarked to receive the pass that led to his goal. Seriously? 4 on 2, one of the deadliest strikers in the world is walking up the middle of the pitch, and you all decide to watch the flank?
Besides the terrible defense, poor decision making up front killed. Arshavin guilty of glory-seeking several times, Fabregas a bit too.

The idea of having vermaelen as a defensive fielder is a wonderful thought, I think he will do well there with Song as a shield for the defence. We need a five men midfield against Chelsea with Arshavin,Vermaelen,Cesc, Song and Eboe. Let Cambell and Galas be at centre of midfield and stick Bendtner at the front.

I like ARSENAL, but I bet on ManU yesterday and won some bucks. I really wish I would have lost the money. Somehow I have no faith in Arsenal when it comes to Big4. I totally agree that AW has to let go some players like walcott,Almunia, Fabianski. Fundamentally Arsenal players lack the crossing and shooting skills. And what is the point of crossing high when no one in the team is going to win in the air?
If AW is so concerned about making money for the club instead of spending them, maybe he should sell his intellectual property on how to stay at top4 nurturing a young team at lowest budget to those bottom clubs. I bet they will be eager to listen to the professor.
Buy Chelsea this weekends. It's going to be an empty season again.

We should not forget that Arsenal live within their means. Of course we have fewer big name players, but ManU Chelsea have enormous debts as they buy up the best mature player. Is this sustainable? I doubt it. Arsenal have a much more conservative policy, which will be stronger in the long run. Don't forget this team has been in the top flight since 1886.

Arsenal's problems are so obvious. This leaves me wondering what exactly Wenger is up to, or probably he's just a businessman who wants to make as much money for the club and himself to the detriment of excellent, purposeful, result-oriented football which actually results into winning trophies and money for the club. Except if I'm missing something somewhere though, because watching the match from a technical point of view makes it so glaring that Arsenal lacks a goal-scorer; we had a couple of sitters in the first half but none could be converted. Yeah, Man Utd played better at the end of the day, but what do you expect form a very experienced side, managed by a very effective and efficient coach in the person of Alex Ferguson after they got into the drivers seat? Wenger needs someone to tell him that the essence of a meaningful goal-scorer is for matches of this magnitude, so the fact that his side has been scoring against the likes of Bolton, Blackburn, etc is not what counts.

Despite the loss to ManU, I must say that i'm more than satisfied this season. It comes to no surprise that Arsenal is again the best of the rest. I can still support Mr. Wenger even if he wants to be 4th in the league in the next 2 seasons. We have to take into account the financial matters. Arsenal is one of the healthiest club without the oil magnates. They build their own empire. And for that I will always support this club.
The problem now is how to keep Fabregas. The team is built around him now and maybe, maybe in 2 seasons the players will have matured enough and the big-money signing will be done by Wenger for the title challenge. Let's keep our fingers crossed!

Yesterday was demorilizing, but not as much as last year's semifinal game. Let's face it, the quality is just not there but you do not need quality against Chelsea, ManU and Liverpool to win the EPL. Do not forget, the title is won against Stoke, Wigan, Bolton etc. I remember a couple of seasons ago when we beat ManU home and away, in Titi's final season. We barely came in fourth, because we could not beat Boro, Bolton etc. away. CL, on the other hand, is constructed in a way that you cannot hide and make up. It's not over (EPL challenge). Yet.

I do wonder if David Young is a true Arsenal Supporter or just someone pretending to be one. Of all the club correspondents on the site, he is the one with the most negative reviews of the club he claims to support. It is almost as if he is waiting for the team to slip up for him to come out guns firing.

mature arsenal players who are been deceived by AW to be mixed with 19 year olds and thinks your playing days are numbered to win trophies in the team can leave. because AW will never makes your dream comes true. henry did and then was part of the barcelona team that won up to four trophies in one year. soon ade and kolo will be in that situation too-because there are steps been taken by man city to do that. Arsenal is a business team for 19 years old only and sold when matured enough.

There is no tenacity in arsenal's play lately, quite frankly they would be better off in the spanish or italian league.. there is not enough physical and domineerin players on the team to keep up with the big boys of man u and chelsea... what was denilson doin watchin rooney run 60 yards out right into the 18 yrd box, im not takin anything away from rooney because his finish was spectacular but just a little hustle from the lazy brazilian may have taken rooney off his stride... arshavin is not big enough to handle the lone striker role..walcott ...my sister would be more effective..BENDTNER - DID YOU HAVE TO REIMBURSE ANYONE FOR BUYING YOUR JERSEY?? YOU ARE HORRID.. just watchin arsenal was definitely demorilizing,, where has the hustle and work ethic gone, did it slip away with the injury of van persie??

Last season we beat Chelsea, Man Utd and drew with Liverpool but we ended up fourth . This season we have lost to Chelsea and Utd home and away. Why is this so? Simple. The Arsenal team is not consistent. We could not beat the lower ranked teams last sizn and now when we seem to be doing well against the lower ranked teams we slip up against the big teams. Unless we solve our consistency issues we will continue to struggle. But really our defending was absolutely INSANE, RIDICULOUS and SHAMBOLIC. I am sure Adams, Keown, Dixon and Nigel will be fuming. How can we concede the same goal twice and we did the same thing against Everton. More than anything we need a defensive coach.

i see no shame in losing to a better team and on the day man u were the better team they were more direct in front of goal and took their chances arsenal did not. arsenal have not replaced rvp his lack of pace and goals count more against the top teams you can fill in against lesser teams not against the likes of rooney in the front and a good defence who play as a unit. arsenal seem to lack pace up front prehaps a rethink of where you put walcott a more central role rather than outwide.they will have to change something before they play chelsea or they could have the same result,if their title hopes are alive or not only time will tell i have always thought it was chelseas to lose rather than other teams to win. my disappointment was the FA CUP i felt arsenal had a good chances of winning this.

This is a pretty harsh reaction to the match. The only real difference was that United were lethal and the Gunners had no cutting edge. Arshavin had his chances to give them the lead (either by finishing or actually picking out a teammate) and the flow of the play went both ways.
Besides this season's title race will be decided on consistency, not on matches against Chelsea and Man U. If they can stay healthy and recover from injury they can still make up the ground (although I have little hope of a result vs. Chelsea)
Of course there is still a lot of cause for concern. Though this is probably harsh, I thought Denilson was partially to blame for all 3 goals. He was beaten very easily by Nani and did not force him away from goal on the 1st, He failed to track Nani or Rooney on the 2nd and he gave away possession on the 3rd. He does not stand any comparison to Darren Fletcher in a similar role for United.

Demoralizing is definitely the sentiment. Was absolutely disgusted by the time Looney netted the 2nd. And it was made all the worse having stayed up past midnite to catch the game in Asia.
I know many of us have been clamoring for strikers to be added to squad, but I really feel it should start at the back. To me, Almunia doesnt inspire the confidence at all. I dont want to just judge him based on the 1st (own) goal, but we definitely miss the surehandedness of Seaman and even Lehman (and his occasional lemons). But do our 2nd and 3rd choice 'keepers up the confidence levels at the back? We can only wait and see.

It was very difficult to watch Arsenal get trashed by Man U, the team fell apart under the persistent pressure from the opposing team. Dinelson was on a walk about most of the time, Arshaven going for the glory. AW has limited financial resources to work with, so no matter what he'll be forced to wait out the return of Diaby & VanP. That said it was painful to watch the total demolition of Arsnel

It is pleasing to read all these comments. What a briliant support base.Only if the technical side or the players who are computer illitrate could access it. We can win against chealse only if we shoot as soon as we are on 18 to 25 yards from goal. they will not give you any chance to get closser. Anything can happen with a powerfully drilled shot at a lower angle. A deflection, a conner, a hand ball or a rebound. The crosses should be drilled chest high because RVP is not avilable and Betner is a sub.
If this tactic is not used, i can bet every coin that chealse are going to use it effectively. We meet here next week and i won my bet.
Most of our players are verry talentd but lack the physical strength.they have to learn how to make a tackle look like a foul. if they jut go down on the slightest push without resisting, no Ref will give a foul for that.
Footbal is not just kicking the ball around but using the servival instics as well.they have to be able to pre-empt the opponet.

aw has to learn that putting the same ineffective players in the same postion hoping for a different outcome is insane. the gk must go,along with denilson and the other diminutive midfielders like rosicky, nasri who are always being pushed around by the opposition midfield. the time to buy a striker has come and gone and we fail to add some mature players to the youth movement. I'm really losing faith in aw

i think the real issue here is wether the players believe in themselves and the club as much as AW or the fans do. If burnley could beat man utd in their own backyard then why couldnt we do it.I for 1 am tired of making excuses 4 this team. we were horribly exposed by a man utd team that doesnt really have what you would call giant players. Take Rooney 4 instance, a player who shows that its not about the size of the dog in the fight but the size of fight in the dog. either show courage or leave b4 we go another 5 years without a trophy.

wow i am surprised by the harsh comments on the arsenal team.. did you guys watch the match or not? Even how disappointed I am in the game with arsenal i would could still see some positives... You look at the run up of the games arsenal had it s definitely taxing on them bolton back to back , then aston villa then man u then chelsea then liverpool? This defeat doesnt mean the end for arsenal. If they can bounce back and start a winning run it will be beneficial to them as the rest of the teams will meet each other but arsenal have completed the big matches. Only counting tough games with spurs and city as the remaining left. About the game the stats say it all they had more possession more shots more corners but just tat the ball wont go in... Tough luck i would say. One bad point i can see in the game is denilson he becoming a weak link in team as he keeps losing possession and too slow to recover (2 goals were mistakes by him). So keep the faith in the team they will come good..

A lot of problems that have shown themselves before - not just in this one match versus United. (1) The team defence is terrible. The lack of communication between Clichy and Nasri on the first goal for example. (2) The lack of commitment and purpose in tracking back for example on the Rooney and Park goals. Rooney ran past several players including Denilson - you teach 12 year olds to pick up a player and get behind the ball. (3) Our fullbacks have been poor all season. In our end they've been easily beaten. In the other end their crosses have been laughable. But then again who are they crossing the ball to? (4) Almunia never has been and never will be the world class keeper that a team aspiring to greatness requires. Period. full stop.

i watched the match, so i dun blame arshavin. he tried to be finishing striker, but he did not finish at the end (not selfish). i dun blame denilson & clichy, they are not fitted to play (mentally). rosicky & nasri, they had tried to play their soul out, but they were limited by their body (psychically). vermaelen & gallas, dun blame them also, they tried to help in attacking as goalless by the front (forgot to defend). sagna & song were normal (normal on their level). cesc was the 1 who was thinking when to leave arsenal after 1st goal by almunia & 2nd goal by rooney (what am i doing here?). aw was thinking how to sell cesc to make more money to the club after 3rd goal by korean (show me the money). m.u. were not outstanding, they won because opponent was oddly weak. good luck, arsenal.

Greetings from an Arsenal fan in Colombia, from what I see on TV, I think Arsenal needs a strong character, I don't see any player with the attitude to take his mates to the next level, the level needed in this big games, you would think that Fab has what its needed, but, you see, in this kind of games, well, he's alone in the park, but he doesn't have neither that kind of attitude I'm talking about.... so I'm talking about some mercurial player like Henry, Vieira, even Campbell in his good days, someone who inspires his teammates in this kind of games... next game Chelsea? well, we better start praying...

Yes, match winners! This is really what we are missing now. Seriously, somehow whatever thing happens to arsenal this season I could not care less. I have somehow resigned myself in believing that they can win the premier league this season. My worst fear is that, all these defeats, lack of ''like-minded, able'' players around fabregas can really make him demotivated to stay with us any more. I am saying that he is not faithful to us, but if this continues, for someone who is as ambitious as fab, he would definitely love to win more in his career. Will arsenal provide him to achieve all that?
Arsene, please get 1 good gk, 1 good striker to partner rvp when he is back....

The time has come for some players to be offloaded.
Denilson - Missing during prime time
Walcott - Too much speed & no direction, should be a sprinter
Almunia - Butter fingers
Betner - Sub, injury prone
Diaby - Injury prone, too weak as a midfielder
Fabianski - Butter fingers II
Did i miss anyone?
Im sure with the sale we can get a 3 or 4 decent guys.

i just cannot believe the score. All the Arsenal fans was expecting a great game 4rm Arsenal as it was a home game. That was an advantage but the players destroyed it.Almunia did a huge mistake at old trafford by giving away a penalty & his done it again.I just cannot understand why arsene wenger does not want to buy a striker like Cole,Zamora who will have a presence. He cannot always hope 4 Van persie who is always going to out of injury while bentner is not a world class striker.Arsene should give a chance to vito who dont great in his game againts Fulham. The fans r waiting 4 a trophy 4 5 years now.Wenger must really think about doing something special at Stamford Brige.

I find most these comments a little far fetched. David's analysis is spot on, as usual. There is no point seeing through rose-coloured glasses. Call it like it is.
For me, all 3 goals were Denilson's fault.
1. Yes, Clichy and Nasri were beaten but Nani took a heavy touch. Denilson was covering and got caught in two minds. In the end Nani easily beat him.
2. The break is on. Vermaelen covers Park on the left, Clichy was too far behind Rooney, Rooney overtook Denilson by at least 30 yards and went to the spot. Clinical finish but on corners, Denilson is the man back.
3. Pressure was mounting, Gallas & Vermaelen were forward. Denilson's heavy touch directly to Carrick gifted the goal. Knock it out, knock it forward but do something.
Clichy criticisms? He works his heart out. He was coming back on the 2nd, only man back on the 3rd and he will get back to his best.
And Arshavin? Missing chances means you created chances. One of them goes in and he is the hero.

Like every Arsenal Supporter I disappointed that Manchester Beat Arsenal in a manner they did.
I have observed that whenever Arsenal Come up against Man U , Arsenal Players simply lose confidence and start making errors ( some are comical ). Just look back at all the Man U victories, i can not remember any win for Man U that was won with a lot of effort by Man U.
Even the 1st Match this season , an own goal that handed all 3 points to Man U on a silver plate.
Remember the Champions league last season ; defensive slips - and Man U progressed at Arsenal's expense.
The list is long ; however when the players play with out panic and confidence the wins against Man U have been emphatic and deserved.
Lately Chelsea has now joined Man U ion the List.
Liverpool will soon join.
I don't think it all to about signing players, these are the same players who have been beating every team.It is a Psychological issue that Mr Wenger has to address with his players.

love arsenal, love arsene. I think we do seem to lack a bit of muscle or mongrel - a Keown, Adams or Viera to take no shit and dish out a bit of rough stuff when needed but cesc has shown the skill and leadership to be such a player. other players do need to have a think about their role and position at Arsenal though. the man u game was a disaster but stats showed it wasn't as one-sided as score suggests, luck maybe? I think so but that is football. confidence is important especially in a young team and that is the biggest issue for this team, they lack confidence against top 4 teams. chelsea away is a severe test of character for arsene's kids and after a loss at home this sort of game is what will sort those that have gunner spirit and those that don't. all is not lost but we might go another year without a trophy. I think if that is the case arsene will have his answers as to who to get rid off and who measures up to the arsenal standard and he will act in the off season

Arsene Wenger & team owe the entire fans an apology not because of this defeat but for the way he give false hope time & again to the Arsenal supporters. I think that is the least he could do.
My thought; let Arsene, Almuia, Rociky & Walcott go, put faith in Vito & go purchase someone better in defence & attack.

WOW. It seems every Bob, Harry and Jimmy who claims to support Arsenal has got an opinion as to what AW needs to do to win. And somehow they all fall in 2 categories
1. Point finger - let be it AW, Denilson, doesn't matter - Just pick and shoot
2. Scream "Buy" - doesn't matter whether the player fits our style of play or not, just measure his height and say "Hey we need someone like that"
- So what we lost a game or perhaps didn't win anything in last few years? We are still Arsenal, we still have our own philosophy about how the game should be played or how the club should be run.
- If Winning a Silverware is all you care about, why don't you go support Chelsea or ManU for that matter? I am sure nobody would mind.
- Liverpool spent a whole lot more money than Arsenal can and look at them now. I don't quite see them chasing any silverware. Do you ever think of that?
- C'mon folks, Through darkness and light, you SUPPORT the team, YOUR TEAM, YOUR ARSENAL.
-GO GUNNERS

I think there is nothing wrong with David's comment nor the torrid blogs that followed. The strongest suppporters can be the harshest of critics. This can only be attributed to passion. Some go a step too far to suggest players and tactics. Notwithstanding that, I think this is the response from David and the rest are not way off the mark. Losing patience with the team is one, not showing support is another. It is pointless to relate these two.

Come on people. It's quiet normal for the games, some win some loss. Just you are not good enough in the day you meet ManU, last year Nasri goaled twice because ManU's not good enough. I still love the way Arsenal play (not last clash with ManU), I wakeup in late night just to watch the entertain game, either win or loss, but sure, win should be better. I will wake up for Chelsea clash, even I spare in mind Arsenal will loose. But I don't think so ManU can get through Portsmouth easily, they are struggling at bottom.
Happy with the game or try to find favor in the game, do not be serious.

I remembered once few years back where Harry Redknapp says Arsene buys players who are damn tall and run damn fast.. Since then came in: Flamini, Hleb, Almunia, Cesc, Nasri, Walcott, Arshavin, Vermaelen, Eduardo, Wilshire, Ramsey. And non of them is beyond 179cm.
But i'd like to see Song and Vermaelen in Midfield. And get a taller and stronger DC. And a fairly good goalie with height. The way i see it, the prob is predominantly defence.
Go gunners.

it's ok to lose. more impt is how we deal with it. arsenal really hv some mental block with the big teams; they start off the match like some practice session. clearly they need another player on the field with experience, winning mentality preferably in age 27-29. Fab, rosicky and arshavin alone are not enough to drive the team, especially when one or 2 or them not in form. AW, success cannot be bought but it may come at a small price.
 |
Posted by Anonymous on 02/05/2010
Arsene wenger goes into the tranfer market expecting to buy someone at the exact value their worth, where in the world do you buy something at its exact value? And because of this he would rather rely on a few players comming back from injury who at their best will turn in an average performance. I thought that the reason Arsenal moved to a bigger ground was so that they would be able to contend a bit better against the likes of man uwhen it came to buying new players, but there seems to be less spending now than five years ago. Five years ago wenger told everyone that they would witness the true potential of his youngsters, and since then cole, flammini, hleb, tauray, adabayor have left and eventually senderos will have gone to. thats more then half the team of five years ago. everyone loves an exiting new signing almost as much as winning silverwear. unfortunatly neither of them are happening at Arsenal.

Where are the world beaters Arsene wenger promised us his team would become five years ago? Why is it Arsenal seem to have less money now then five years ago when they were still at highbury? Whats so special about a bunch of younsters who dont win anything and are always getting injured? Since when did it start becoming policy for Arsenal to sell high profile players at the end of each season without replacing them?
The people who run A.F.C remind me of the government, they would rather lie by dishing out false hope for the future in order to justify the extortionate matchday ticket prices. Arsenal are far from being in a stable situation right now, as it will only take either cesc fabregas and/or van persie to leave and then there is nothing.
Forgive me if im wrong but spending too much money on new players is just as bad not spending money to replace players who just are not good enough.

Posted by thie li on 02/06/2010
If Arsenal players continue to leave for richer clubs like Barcelona, Chelsea and Manchester City with Wenger continuing not to buy experienced players, Arsenal will not win any trophies. Arsenal will be the top youth academy in England. A club with no trophies to boost of is what most fans will not desire.

there is no sence crying over spilt milk that performance was way below our standard and to be fair we had our chances but didnt take them.
lets deal with chelsea and team formation going forward.
first dennilson is a dench player theres no way he should be in the starting 11 of such a good squad.
baring injury this is my starting 11 for chelsea
in goal VITO alumnia has to be benched he is terribly out of form
glichy is also out of form but we have no one better at the moment so he can retain his spot so the back four can remain the same.
in the middle song,diaby,fabregas
in front of them nasri rosiky and arshavin
walcott and benthner are the obvious attacking subs if we are in the game but we cant score i would bring on bendthner early in the second half i think his height will help us in this game.
but before the game starts if i was the3 coach i would tell the guys as talented as they might be if they dont learn to be men instead of boys they cant win the big games

Arsene wenger, what are you trying to prove. are you a buisness man or a football manager? cos at the moment you seem more concerned with keeping money in the pockets of your bosses then anything else. i think arsene has lost it to be honest, and now the so called football manager of AFC is too stuborn to even admit to himself that his team havent actually moved on at all in the last five years. how can they develop when players keep being sold and not being replaced by anyone other then a kid who is 2 or 3 years behind behind the guy he is replacing.
On a lighter note though, at least i dont have to buy another ticket until the start of next season cos if anyone didnt already know, they are the most expensive in the league.

Gallas is an amazing defender but it seems like he is physically and mentally moving on. May be its time to make a move for Micheal Dawson. He is Arsenal quality.

Sam Limbert: My retirement as a football player came at the age of 14 due to being rubbish, it's fair to say I was more Kaba Diawara than Thierry Henry, so I turned my focus to writing about the game. I'm a lifelong Arsenal fan and have been lucky enough to watch the team across England and Europe. My favourite Gunner of all time is Dennis Bergkamp, and the 2004 Invincibles is the greatest side I've ever seen in English football. I try to be positive about the Arsenal as it's the hope that keeps us going! Follow me on twitter @SamsMatchReport.
