Arsenal

After a disappointing exit from the FA Cup at Stoke at the weekend, Arsenal followed up with a goalless draw at Aston Villa on Wednesday night. This was the first of a run of four games that could very well determine whether the Gunners are serious challengers for the title this season.

In truth, the draw at Villa Park was probably a fair result. The home team had the single best chance of the match and the better of the first half. For their part, Arsene Wenger’s side looked more dangerous in the second period and hit the woodwork in both halves.

Though Arsenal brushed Villa aside at Ashburton Grove over Christmas, Martin O’Neill’s team are a different proposition on home turf having already beaten Chelsea there. It turned out to be a low-quality match on Wednesday night with neither team particularly deserving of all three points. That said, title-winners often win matches that they don’t deserve and these are the sort of games that the Gunners really need to start nicking if they are to make the dream of winning the Premier League a reality.

Ultimately, looking at this critical run of four matches, a draw at Villa is not a disaster and will look a much better outcome if the Gunners can beat Manchester United at home on Sunday. Disappointingly, United have begun to rediscover their form lately. Most of this seems down to Wayne Rooney’s recent individual exploits. It would be great to think that merely stopping Rooney on Sunday would be the key to three points but Alex Ferguson will have every player in his team really wound up for this match as it is as important to them as it is to us.

Both Arsenal and United have had problems defensively this season and one suspects that whichever team has the best day at the back on Sunday will prevail. The Gunners delivered a spirited performance at Old Trafford earlier in the season but the combination of a debateable penalty and a disastrous own goal by Abou Diaby meant they suffered a defeat when they deserved a lot better. We can only hope that the same misfortune does not befall us on Sunday. The players should need no motivation to win the game. Apart from this being a potential pivotal match in the title race, personal pride ought to mean that they want to right the wrongs of the away encounter back in August.

Sunday also signals the close of the mid-season transfer window. It is disappointing that, with only a few days to go, there is very little sign that Arsene Wenger is going to further add to his squad to help in the push for honours at the end of the season. As frustrating as that is, it is hardly unexpected. During January we have seen Sol Campbell be signed until the end of the season and Jack Wilshere go off to Bolton on loan. Neither of these moves will appease supporters - most of whom are crying out for the forward line to be reinforced and the defence to be bolstered.

Though Campbell has looked reasonably solid in his outings against Stoke and Villa, he is not a long-term solution. The news that Thomas Vermaelen might have broken his leg in the midweek match showed how alarming Arsenal’s defensive situation is. Fortunately, the Belgian’s injury turned out to be minor but the scare showed that it would only take one bad challenge for the Gunners to be left short in the centre of defence and reliant on a 36-year-old to last out until May.

As for Wilshere, many fans think he ought to have been given a more of chance this season. If Arsene Wenger can find the space to assimilate Aaron Ramsey into the first team, then why not Jack Wilshere? The manager seems happy to give players like Theo Walcott and Carlos Vela endless opportunities and yet this pair have been little more than passengers this season who have contributed zero to the campaign. Similarly, players like Abou Diaby get game after game when they are hopelessly out of form whilst Wilshere, who is the most exciting prospect the club has seen since Cesc Fabregas made his mark, doesn’t get a look in. The positive side of Wilshere’s move is that the young man will get some serious game-time at Bolton and acquire valuable Premier League experience to bring back with him.

So, it would seem that Arsene Wenger is ready to gamble on the players he has. If the Gunners win a trophy, the manager will feel vindicated in his decision. If the team yet again promise much and deliver nothing though, the Frenchman will feel the heat like never before. Arsenal are in a situation where they could still win the title. It is going to take a gargantuan effort and a bus-load of belief from the players to pull it off and should they fail or fall away before May, many will question Wenger’s failure to strengthen the squad when he had the chance.

My view since summer last is proved. Economics at the club (esp. the Highbury condo project) in recessionary times meant Wenger would stand pat. I did not expect January activity for Arsenal. This current squad was tipped for a trophy by their boss. The message is clear - "I've brought you here, nurtured & backed you, and now it's your time to deliver". If we fail to win something or to come within a whisker, there will be changes this summer and money will be spent. The fans are making their minds up as to which players can help Arsenal win a title. Wenger is no dummy! - he's taking names too. That being said, in the Villa-to-'Pool 4 game stretch, we need 2 wins and 2 draws. After that, the title-chasing team that can string 8 victories in a row in the last 12 matches of the season will win the 09-10 title. It can be us! Go on you Gunners - reward the belief your manager and fans have in you! P.S. are stats compiled in man-games lost to injury? Where does Arsenal sit in that table?

I suspect Wenger is giving players such as Diaby & Vela a last chance to prove themselves as Arsenal players, if they dont make it this season, we might see a few playes heading out. Personally i would trade Walcott & Vela for Lennon. But i expect a lot of changes in the summer regardless if we win any trophies or not

When we last played you, Cesc provided the spark that was the difference between the teams. Without those moments of individual brilliance the teams looked pretty evenly matched this week. Villa took the first half and Arsenal edged the second.
I had thought that you would challenge for at least 2nd place this year but I don't think the fit members of your squad carry quite enough quality to do that.
Although I remain unconvinced by Bentdner, his introduction did bring a new dimension to your play. It enabled you to play some long ball football which started causing new problems for us and changed the balance of the game in your favour.
Despite Wenger being a bit of a tosser at times I would like to see you lot challenging at the end of the season but I fear that you will fall just short again this time.

Posted by Komesha on 01/30/2010

Arsenal need to focus on the game tomorrow and forget the past match. The squable with O'rneil does not help us. Everybody saw the long balls.
The game with manchester will be a tough one if they play in the same spirit as they did with City. We can only pull it off if the boys will be leval headed because manchester will try very hard to provoke anger and then take the game away.
A quick passing game will do the trick but we need to be worry on the couter. The long balls to Roony should not land to him at all cost. Galas can not head the ball first time and that is why we loose on the long balls. How can a proffesional player wait for the ball to baounce of the ground to be able to take control. Dont Arsen wanger teach him ball control?
Wish the team all the best this weekend. Arsenal for the title.

" During January we have seen Sol Campbell be signed until the end of the season and Jack Wilshere go off to Bolton on loan. Neither of these moves will appease supporters - most of whom are crying out for the forward line to be reinforced and the defence to be bolstered."

Sol has been a good signing. He's fitted in well, and performed well. The defence HAS been bolstered.

DY replies:

My point was that had Vermaelen's injury been worse, then we would have been relying on a 36-year-old to last until the end of the season. Sol has made a solid start but the fact they have only signed him until the summer shows that he is not the long-term answer to truly boltstering the centre of defence. He is a stop-gap

"As for Wilshere, many fans think he ought to have been given a more of chance this season....look-in."

You haven't seen many matches this season, have you? Ramsey is much, much better than Wilshere right now. He's knocking on the door to the first team, while Wilshere has been largely dissappoiting this season, if only because of the burden of expectation on him after the pre-season.

Diaby's been in great form, we really missed him against AV.

Vela and Walcott have hardly been given endless opportunities.

Wilshere is an exciting prospect, but there are lots of other equally exciting prospects.

DY replies:

And you can judge Wilshere on four first team starts this seaon - none of which have been in the Premier League? I am basing my opinion not just on this year's Emirates Cup but also on years of watching Wilshere in the youth team and reserves. There is no question that he is the best homegrown player to be produced by the Academy in a decade. However, the Premier League is the only place to judge a player and the only way to bring a young player up to standard is to give them experience in it.

Ramsey, Vela and Walcott have all been given Premier League opportunities. Ramsey looks like he has come on for them this season whereas, in my view, the jury is still out on the other two. Walcott now has four years of Premier League chances behind him and doesn't look any more of a player than when he arrived. When Thierry Henry came to Arsenal many thought he was just a speed machine without a football brain - much the same criticism that is levelled at Walcott. In his first month or two, Henry showed little to alter that view but then something clicked and he became transformed into the player we all know and love. Four years and nearly one hundred appearances on, we are still waiting for that transformation from Walcott.

Again though, you seem to miss my point. I said that Arsene Wenger ought to have been assimilating Wlishere into the first team scene - just has he has been doing with Ramsey and indeed Vela. That doesn't necessarily mean giving him first team starts. It means giving him 20 minutes as a subsitute every now and then. Giving him a taste of the action and a chance to show what he can do without totally exposing his inexperience. Ramsey is only looking like he is knocking on the first team door because Wenger has done this with him. Had you judged the Welshman solely on his first few appearances, you wouldn't have seen much in him except a load of ten-yard sideways passes. But Wenger persisted with him and it my belief he should have been doing the same with Wilshere this season.

Still, maybe Jack's time is yet to come. As much as I hate Bolton Wanderers, I hope he has a really successful few months there because he is the real deal.

Finally, Diaby has been in reasonable form - over the last month. Though you seem to think I haven't seen many games this season, in turn, I can only assume you entirely missed the first four months if you are prepared to overlook how poor he was during the first half of the campaign.

Manu miss Rio, good news. Alex song come back, good news. Just wait for goal to win, who? and someone to lock wane rooney in dead lock. Nasri is seem to be the lucky man to make goals as same as last season. I trust in Wanger and the team hunger. Prove by winning

Posted by sam on 01/30/2010

we need prayers this time....i dont think arsenal have wat it takes to win a trophy...no strikers and considering arshavins form lately, there is still a goal drought continuing.

Posted by TJ on 01/30/2010

My god settle down martin oneill! verbally attacking arsene like that, i mean is he just angry that we arseane aims for champions league and premiership glory when he can barely aim to win a league cup title.

We arent doing to badly atm but i really wish arsene would try to bring paveluchenko to the emirates it ia a greay solution he has played with arsharvin technically sound, has physical presence and much more experience than nicklas bendtner. Redknapp is so short sighted he continues to pursue other strikers whilst ignoring the quality russian in front of him.

Posted by Leonarta on 01/30/2010

I knew beforehand we do not really have good centrebacks for backups.Gallas-Vermaelan is good but why do we have to sell toure?Sanderos isnt world class but he might be an experienced and ok backup.

On to Walcott and Vela.Vela I feel is a decent player and he has only been making substitute appearances and Walcott..How old is he again?Thierry was 21-22 when he joined arsenal and Walcott is only 20-21 this year I think. When he gets to 23-24 then you can really judge him.

The prob is the strikers.Other than RVP there's just no one else.I highly regard eduardo but he hasnt been the same since he came back from his horrific injury.Bendtner has convince me yet but he is still so young so who knows.Hell I though Adebayor was crap during his first season here. But we need an immediate solution rather than wait for this players to grow up and be counted.

If u think man utd and liverpool are doing great just take a look at their debt.besides chelsea,I feel arsenal is doing ok financialy

Posted by BEGGARWENGER on 01/30/2010

ARSENAL WILL WIN NOTHING AGAIN, I GUARANTEE U.

THE KIDS ARE TAKING THEIR PLACES FOR GRANTED ALL BCOS OF MR WENGER THE IDIOTIC.
SOON OUR BEST PLAYERS WILL LEAVE AGAIN, U WILL SEE. BCOS ARSENAL IS A BUSINESS CLUB, NO AMBITION. A CLUB THAT CHEATS FANS MONEY.

Posted by Leonarta on 01/30/2010

True they operate more like a business than a football club cause at the end of the day it IS a business.

Do you think wenger would spend huge amounts of money and take a gamble, thus risking the club financially like man utd and liverpool.True it is the owner's that have the debts.Maybe Kroenke or usmanov could be the new abramovich but hopefully they dont demand success straight away and fire him if it doesnt happen.

IN WENGER WE TRUST..

Posted by makarya on 01/30/2010

I remember you being very critical of Song. But good that Wenger showed some faith in him as he has shown great improve. Why should show faith in some but not in others? I think he knows better then you which is why you do this blog and he is ARSENE WENGER. MANAGER OF ARSENAL.

I like comments here better then what you say.

Posted by Trint on 01/30/2010

I can't say I am surprised that the team hasn't been strengthened. After your clarification on comments re: Wilshere I understand the view. I agree with the assessment of Vela and Walcott as well. I still think that the weakest link in the midfield is Denilson. He was greatly improved earlier in the year and is finally moving the ball forward as opposed to sideways or backwards. But his defensive work is just awful. Often you see him jogging back while opposition are bombing past him (Stoke - Sidibe, latest example). With the style of attacking fullbacks you need adequate coverage that he is unable to provide.

Wenger always says he does great things when he comes to criticism. David, as a respected voice for Arsenal, do you see these qualities? I just see a player who is slower than the rest, not as creative as the rest and not providing the defensive qualities that could justify being in the team.

David Young replies:

I think the problem with Denilson is that no one is entirely sure what his role is and where his strengths actually lie. I am not sure that he knows either.

Some think he is a Cesc-like player - more creative than defensive. However, he has never shown enough creativity to truly warrant this tag. Others see him as more of a holding player. But as you rightly point out, the defensive side of his game is weak.

I don't really know what the answer is with him. It is hard to make a case for a player when you can't exactly pinpoint what he brings to the party - but then you could say that about a few players in this squad.

I just don't know what to think anymore. Man United and Chelsea find ways to win "bad games" like the one we had at Villa. Even though we didn't necessarily deserve the 3 points, we needed to find a way to steal the spoils.

I admire the way Wenger runs the club and I've always admired it, but I do not understand why NO ONE has been signed. If AW really wanted to, we could have gotten Huntelaar on loan from Milan. That would have made a great signing to help us close out this campaign. We were being linked with Victor Moses, why did that disintegrate?? Moses is everything Wenger likes: young, skilled, quick, good technical ability. Oh by the way, he's ENGLISH!! This club could use more English players (since currently none feature in the starting XI on a regular basis). And how the **** did we miss out on Smalling? It's all so frustrating.

I'm holding out hope we claim the title this year, but I just don't know what to expect. Prove me wrong Gunners!

Posted by seray on 01/30/2010

they will never fire Aw. Wenger is making the money D the owners are looking for-thats bussiness. Arsenal have not won nothing for D past 4 to 5 yrs, yet there yearly income is almost or more compared to chelsea/manu -who are winning most trophies yearly out. this income is mostly from the tickets sales made by fans with the hope AW and D management will buy competitative players that will made them happy by D end of the season. D other reason is b/C of AW reluctant to buy competitative players, instead bought 18 yrs old's @ lesser amount and sold again when reaches their prime time to play at a higher amount. This courses D management to make money. so trophy no trophy they dont care. fellow fans, henry, kolo toaure and ade left b/c they wants to win trophys instead been mix with a bounch of 18s yrs old who cant compete when really maters. AW is good of unsettling players without buying them such as chamark. stop buying tickets so the board will notice. no new players in D summer?

In response to BEGGERWENGER, where were we before Arsene? Middle of the table, mediocre @ best? After Arsene's arrival, we did start to win but if you want to keep winning you have one of 2 options, get into debt like Man U or build your team like Arsenal. It is tough watching them coming so close. But I have all the faith in Arsene. Without him we still would have been in the middle of the table & still @ Hibury.

Posted by the people on 01/31/2010

i suggest arsenal not to sell cesc fabregas cause he is a high potential footballer and he will help arsenal to win the title.i hope wenger not to sell anyone cause all the arsenal player have their own special ability and potential.at last,i hope those people who are doesn't like arsenal pls keep their mouth shut and don say bad thing about arsenal!we trust u wenger!

Posted by Ronald on 01/31/2010

A draw against Villa wasnt adisaster but we want more than that against Chelsea and Man U.
gOOD LUCK GOONERS

Posted by bobbys on 01/31/2010

ok this loss against manchester is truely hard to take but we have to regroup and very quickly if we beat chelsea we are still in it, however there are definet changes to be made almunia is have a horrible season and to be honest it is time to give someone else a chance personally i am more impressed wth vito but fabi can get a chance as well, i also think we do not need to stat denilson with song back i think we should go with ramsey or ebouie the attacking formation works better this way denilson needs to put on some upper body strength during the off season he gets taken off the ball to easy.
all in all we just had one of those days today when nothing would go our way but we were in the game all the way

Posted by Mukiibi Godfrey Kampala on 02/07/2010

I am a die-hard Arsenal supporter and to be sincere, Arsenal is purely lucking a serious GK I assure you the goals conceded from Drogba would not be scored against Peter Cec, why? Any curious GK would come forward to punch the ball away why does Almunia have to wait all the time at the line? If all the three goal Keepers are Arsenal’s players why on earth Manone does not showcase his ability? We should accept that Almuinia’s confidence is very low and the way he executes his decisions is warring. Now come to Sagna vs Ebuoe. My God, Eboue has not done any wrong to AW in fact I do not understand why Eboue is second to Sagna! Sagna fumbles so much, his crossings are aimless at many times. I am not happy with the way AW is treating Eboue. I think AW wants us to believe that Eboue in not better that Sagna yet he know inside his heart that Eboue is better than Sagna so that he sells him highly at the guise of confusing the supporters. OK.
