Arsenal got themselves back to winning ways at Ashburton Grove yesterday. Goals from Andrey Arshavin and Aaron Ramsey were enough to see off Stoke City and restore some of the Gunners' battered pride after a bruising seven days.
The victory was more workmanlike than it was brilliant. Stoke looked the livelier team in the early exchanges but gradually Arsenal imposed themselves on the match. In the 21st minute Cesc Fabregas missed a penalty and supporters began to wonder if it was going to be another one of those days. Five minutes later though, Andrey Arshavin freed himself from the attentions of the Stoke defence, fended off a challenge and hit a slide-rule shot into the far corner to give the Gunners the lead.
With no Eduardo yesterday, Arshavin was played as a lone striker. The diminutive Russian might not look the most obvious man to play such a role but what he lacks in height more than makes up for in movement and intelligent running. Often dropping into the hole and constantly making himself available, he gave the midfield every opportunity to find him and then was either able to turn himself or bring others into the attack. He was involved in everything and most of Arsenal’s best attacking play revolved around him. He took his goal very well indeed and was unfortunate not to have added to it.
Arshavin may not be the long-term solution as "the man up top" in the absence of Robin Van Persie but it was gratifying to see him finally turn in a display that was commensurate with his lofty reputation. Too many times this season he has flitted in and out of matches; only occasionally producing the sort of magic that fans hoped to be seeing on a weekly basis. All players go through periods where they are out of form or off colour but hopefully yesterday was a turning point for the Russian because there is no doubt that he is one of the players who needs to be regularly delivering big performances if Arsenal are to make anything of themselves this season.
Though Stoke didn’t manage to mount a sustained period of pressure in the second half to truly worry the home support, there was always the feeling that a second goal was required to kill the game off. After a couple of near misses and the crossbar being rattled by a deflected Arshavin shot, a purposeful run by substitute Aaron Ramsey in the 80th minute was finished off with a neat strike from the outside of the Welshman’s boot that saw the ball flash past Sorensen into the net and secured the victory for the home team.
It was a great relief to have bagged all three points and Chelsea losing a couple of hours later made it a pretty satisfying day all round. Arsenal still did not look anything like title contenders and, overall, the match was a pretty average spectacle but it was vital that they got themselves a win after the reverses against Sunderland and Chelsea in order to revive the spirits of both the players and the supporters.
On Wednesday, the team travels to Greece to face Olympiacos in the final match of the league phase of the Champions League. With qualification already secure, it seems likely that Wenger will field his Carling Cup team rather than risk injury to any of his more likely first picks. It has to be said that the Gunners' injury list is looking alarmingly long at the moment. With Eduardo not making the starting line-up yesterday and Eboue, Traore and Rosicky all taking knocks, the treatment room at London Colney could well resemble a scene out of MASH tomorrow morning.
Still, Wenger has been giving experience to his second string players in the Carling Cup for just this eventuality. So in the next few weeks, players like Jack Wilshere, Aaron Ramsey and Carlos Vela could finally see some big opportunities come their way - and it is up to them to take them.
After the trip to Greece, two away games in the North West follow in quick succession as the team travels to Anfield to face Liverpool on Sunday and then on Wednesday they head to Turf Moor for a clash with Burnley. The Gunners have lost three times away from home already this season and need to show a lot more resilience on the road. With a lengthy injury list and the defeat by Chelsea still smarting, these two games will be stern examinations of the squad’s resources and character but they are tests that need to be passed.

Sometimes a team needs to grind out results without neccesarily playing well. The team did that at Fulham and again against Stoke. With Chelsea losing at City, i believe we are right back in the mix. What the team needs now is a bit of luck, especially on the injury front and a bit of determination on the road. The game at Anfield is crucial because a win will lift extinguish the sorrows of the team. One worriying stat is that we have failed to win there since the unbeaten season. I am silently confident we can un-do that come Sunday. GOONERS 4 lyf!

wenger should try and bring up mannone he is a great keeper almunia seems not be able to catch long throws like wise mannone

Besides the Fulham game, Mannone has looked as shaky as Almunia, so Fabianski should really get a shot. I know he is comin off of injury but couldn't really be worse. And Ramsey should start because he makes things happen. If Arsenal some how gets Balotelli it will really help, but I really don't see the gunners getting a top shelf striker. They will prolly get a striker that is competent. Also they need some strength to compete with Man City, Man United, and Chelsea.

i m glad arsene finally wants to dip into the striker market. To win multiple trophies, we need to have more depth. We are a mega club, so can't be helped if the youths find it hard to break into first team. Arsene please have a big club mentality. We do need tactical players, ie we need physical players who can impose a presence. Song does not give that impact. This way we will get lesser injuries as opponents will think twice about shackling our players.

It was good to see us grind out a win against Stoke, but it was slightly alarming that it took so long to kill the game off. This easily could have been a 3-0 or 4-0 scoreline but it wasn't.
Regardless, a win is a win. The injury list is getting ridiculous; it's starting to feel like the club is cursed. Regardless, we have to work with the currently match-fit players and hope the injured return as soon as possible.
As you say, the next two league games are basically a pass/fail test. I'd say we need to collect all 6 points, but anything less than 4 will end any title hopes we still have.
David, with the long-term absence of RVP, who would you like to see us sign as a replacement? Or do you feel that someone already in the squad will step up?

Wenger should purchase an accomplished striker like huntelaar who played well for real madrid last season.Ac Milan look like they are struggling and we shld snap huntelaar up.We also need one big burly defender/defensive midfielder who will make opposition attacker shudder in fear.We also need to get good or world class keeper as almunia has often come up short this season.A suitable goalkeeper should be espanyol's Carlos Kameni.

It is more of a relief than anything else, as David sums up, "Arsenal still did not look anything like title contenders". In normal circumstances,or at least what Man U and Chelsea will do, Arsenal should have gone with guns blazing against Stoke after a horrid week. But yet again they struggled to impose that sort of dominance that would regain the confidence. Thanks to Arshavin and Ramsey. I agree with David that Arshavin needs to turn in this sort of performances every week. It is also good to note Fab is working hard to create chances. But I seriously hope we start converting more of those chances into goals. Generally, some players need to go a notch higher, particularly, Arshavin, Nasri, Rosicky, Eduardo and Sagna. I hope Ramsey gets more playtime. He is still learning, but certainly is worth taking the risk than sticking with Denilson. Good things do happen, as Chelsea dropped points. Hopefully with an addition or two in Jan, we can go full throttle and determine our own destiny

Good result though the team was not at their best. Good job by Arshavin too. They should just keep grindong ot esults. We pray that they beat Liverpool come sunday. That will certainly send a signal to the rest of the premiership clubs.
It is important that Arsene Wenger buys a good striker in January. Arshavin may not be that good in other games.

its good we have begun winning but am scared, we need not to lose any more. so arsene buy few more experienced players especially strikers and mid feilders. i have seen eduardo lose the ball just in front of the goal keeper and likes of arshavin and rosicky and nasri nolonger have shots on target. arsenal sincerarly need to improve coz it does not deserve more seasons without a trophy. it has great young players who need some support from experienced players which arsene must buy to see the clud fight off the eight point lead by chlesea.

Wenger doesn't seem to know or remember he holds the hearts of millions of Arsenals supporters all over the world, too bad he wont just be a lil flexible when we need him to. Pray he wont be faced with the worst of supporters anger at the end of this season. We'll keep praying for him and the club

While I agree that Arshavin has often not been as influential as he seemingly could be, he is a perfect example of the boost in class that Arsenal gained from dipping into the transfer market. Not every Arsenal youngster is Cesc Fabregas. From Arshavin's performance against Stoke I believe he should be used in that role until Nicklas Bendtner returns or another striker is signed in January. Eduardo was a pale reflection of a lone frontman against Sunderland and the admittedly more difficult Chelsea. Eduardo can pop up for goals but he does not have the sure dribbling, movement off the ball and low center of gravity that Arshavin brings, and he certainly doesnt have any more strength or aerial presence.
Fingers crossed that Gallas returns for the next league fixture as the defense is at bare bones. And I still believe they need more steel in the midfield, Diaby is awful (and injury prone but who isn't) and I am not convinced that Denilson brings enough to the team to be first choice.

Arshavin is an exceptional player anyday. like all other players of the ball, there are bad days and good days. i am surprised at the summation that January is not always a time to buy good players. Arshavin came in January, Adebayor came in January then. what we need is to identify the striker and go for him. A Van Nisteroy, Huntelaar can be bought out of his contract with Ac Millan, Lius Fabiano from Sevilla, Carlton Cole from west ham, Maroune Chamakh , evn Diego Forlan. all this strikers will cost between 6-15 million. which is not too bad. we do have the resouces, it is left for wenger to splash it.
the nations cup will take Chelsea's main threats to opposing teams away for three weeks. it should be an oppurtunity to gain ground and more points. we need a physical, fast, pacy striker. i would personally prefer a carlton cole. he has improved his game, been in england all his life, and wants to make an impression on Capello. what other way then with arsenal the most creative team

there is all this talk of this is the year than arsene's boys become men. obviously thats not the case. how can u compete with a side with such dominating figures such as deco, drogba, the 2 coles, terry, lampard, u could name them all. the fact is they are all dominant in their positons. how can the likes of song, fabregas, walcott and rosicky dominate an opposition of deco, essien, lamperd, kalou. there is no way this team is ready . we need to think sensibly. we all love arsene but its time he decide to splash out a couple buys of 20 million and get arsenal back to the days of pires, viera, ljunberg, parlour, bergkamp and of course the master goal scorer henry. i dont think balotelli is the answer,he is not a team player, why not do the unthinkable and take a couple from a top club, the likes of iaquinta from juve or even higuain from real or an italian to dominate the midfield. we need help and we need it now.

i dont have much to say again about the team and the coach, but i just want mr wenger to open his eyes wide open in this january transfer open and buy world class players.arsenal team is not a complete team,in the absent of rvp arsenal have no replacement in the attarcking force, now we are going to lose song during the african nations cup,who is going to hold and mark the ball like him in that possition?what if fabregas have injury, that means we cant even qualify for europa league next season.please mr wenger all eyes are on you now change your policy now or

Actually we really, really have 2 fine another striker & buy more experience players mixing wit d boys, so dat is dis season 'll be urs....gunner's 4 lyf.

Arshavin is best player .if he play wthBarcelona he will best like messi. when Henry return to Arsenal he will beat Giggs. I suggest Wenger to buy Chamakh,Balotelli,Diego Forlan,Govou,Stephen Appiah and Luca toni..they are cheap but they are better than eduardo and vela.
Posted by Iykeno on 12/12/2009
Its time 4 a change 2 come, either wenger brings quality to the emirates or he faces EXIT...its either he spends bigtime in january or he gives way 4 an extravagant coach 2 come in. long seasons without trophies is gradually taking peoples lifes..he keeps giving us heart failures, emotional deaths & doll moments. wat a nonesense club & personal policy 2 sustain. We need names; we need david villa & chamakh on dat attack, we need viera & siena alongside fabregas on dat midfield, same goes 2 dat week defense of his. If we must pik trophies...then those who have ears, let them hear!!!!!

About
Sam Limbert: My retirement as a football player came at the age of 14 due to being rubbish, it's fair to say I was more Kaba Diawara than Thierry Henry, so I turned my focus to writing about the game. I'm a lifelong Arsenal fan and have been lucky enough to watch the team across England and Europe. My favourite Gunner of all time is Dennis Bergkamp, and the 2004 Invincibles is the greatest side I've ever seen in English football. I try to be positive about the Arsenal as it's the hope that keeps us going! Follow me on twitter @SamsMatchReport.
